Great video series. It makes me wish I still had my 1992 Ford Explorer Sport, or my 95 Jeep Cherokee XJ. The Explorer would have really been a fun vehicle with this engine in it!

Brittany, I love watching the high visibility Repower swaps in Jeeps, Land Cruisers, and light trucks. Is anyone replacing the gas engines in small motorhomes with Cummins support? It seems to me to be a very practical application, since these vehicles need the low rev torque that gassers do not supply.

great series.... I've been thinking of putting this in my 93 f150 4x4.... but I am afraid it would be underpowered....

    Hi Brittany
I have one of these engines in another manufacturers vehicle here in Australia. Its standard fitment to these vehicles.
I have had an issue the dealer can not fix. They say it's a Cummins ECU software problem. The problem is when I take off from standstill the engine has a very bad hesitation and when it does take off I get a big puff of black smoke out the exhaust.
I have worked around this by blanking the EGR off and that fixes the problem. Completely different and better vehicle to drive now.
I feel this hesitation is caused from the exhaust gas in the intake and the ECU not knowing what to do until it gets good fresh air. I know the blanking off changes the emissions but how can the engine be Euro 4 complient when it blows smoke and soot out the exhaust?
Is Cummins aware of this hesitation and is there an ECU update that fixes this?
The dealer here in Perth Western Australia is aware of the problem but has no answers and just says "live with it".
Your comment and help would be great my appreciated

Don't ever expect Cummins (especially U.S) to get involved in Foton issues. BTW, I have the same hesitation problems.

I think a great thing would be to do a collaboration with iamjake on his 50 state road trip so he can really put it to the test long term. @iamjake

he has had problems in the past with his jeep and I don't want his engine to go out but if it does this should be his replacement engine.

Has there been any testing with veggie oil or waste veggie oil?

    • @dlmetzger
      @dlmetzger 6 лет назад +1

For fuel or engine oil use? Don't use vegetable oil for engine. It will not meet the requirements for the engine. For fuel, the straight veggie oil is too thick and may clog the fuel filter.

dlmetzger, thank you. I was considering using the veggie oil as a fuel: add a small extra tank designated for veggie oil only and outfitting that tank with a heat exchanger. Additionally, implementing a designated water/fuel separator for only the veggie oil, then a separate fuel line and separate the two fuels with a simple manual valve. Also, I wonder if I could find a certain ratio of #2 diesel, filtered and cleaned used engine oil and finally a bit of clean veggie oil. That way I could effectively ‘cut’ my fuel costs.
Btw, I love bouncing ideas back and forth, thanks for the response!

Hi, Charles. All Cummins engines are certified to be able to use up to B20 Biodiesel blend, but we do not perform any testing with vegetable oil.
