    UCI has to do more in regards to route design and crowd control. This years TdF had more crashes due to the stupidity of both the public and road furniture placement. Very sad to see Tony retire but glad he has the common sense to see his life is more important than any race

      The UCI😂😂😂😂are you for real you twit, they forced riders to be injected with an experimental load of junk in a syringe and then send them on their way riding a bike at 40mph.

    He’s someone who has direct experience of what he’s talking about and it would be a tragedy if the UCI did not learn from his experience. But they know crashes get clicks and clicks get investment so can we expect meaningful change.

    See Tony's approch is a Dutch civil engineer way, prevent problem by redesign landscape. Like narrow the lane so driver will slow down, not posting a speed sign while leave the road wide open. But because race course is temperarorily set up there is a standard requirement for the road structure to be built.

      There is still a mix in the race, some use rim and some use disc.

    1:58 "you can't tell the riders to brake earlier, then it's more safe, that's because you will always have guys that brake later, so you also have to play the game"
    In motorsports this is very common so there will always be cars touching during races and both drivers, and the rest, can get away with it to the finish safely.
    In the compact peloton, getting safely away with it is close to impossible.
    How then can road conditions avoid this? Is it right to blame the road conditions?..... I don't think so IMO.

      First off, rider in a peloton touch all the time, the elbow jostling sprinters do to get on the right wheel before a bunch sprint is quite entertaining. The point he makes here, is that the races don't have to go through dangerous roads and that thing like a raise middle part in the road (like a crosswalk) are highlighted better, so that riders in the back don't get surprised by people suddenly swerving in front of them

      @@jestag2 The smoothest tarmac can be so much more dangerous than the cobbles if someone in the middle of the peloton can't avoid a traffic island and takes everyone else behind with them.
      There are many more serious crashes on tarmac, especially on narrow winding roads, full of traffic furniture, close to a sprint finish, than on the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix.

      @@andrasszabo1570 I understand specially at high speed descents. The point I am taking is that just because the riders brake differently, the road should be altered to make races a 'walk in the park' for the riders. Otherwise, they should just be racing in the dessert or at the Salt Lake in Utah.
      Danger is part of the sport and it is up to the riders to compete safely.

      As a racer I can say he meant the human factor not the debris factor. The movement of people and their arm is not predictable so they had to be limited to a degree that is less destructive.

    cyclist hate watching crashes but the majority of people like watching crashes making it exciting for organizers.

      On top of that, how hard it is do see all your work go to hell in one second, all that everyday training that you hated, all the months away from the family and friends, all the hours in cold and darkness done in winter become useless because you touched someone's wheel in a tensioned high speed turn
