    This reminds me of the conversations I've seen where people point out how people are still not normal about mental health, that they still actively ignore why it is an illness and it will keep affecting people. It's chronic, chronic mental health illnesses never go away. So Shane is realistic in that he's still not like 100% cured of depression.

    • @sodorart
      @sodorart  3 месяца назад +17

      It's like we're all more open and comfortable TALKING about mental illness but not accepting the reality of it: That it's going to be a daily struggle (most of the time) and there's no magic cure, even w/ therapy and/or meds, etc.

      I feel like it would be a better (in-game) portrayal of Shane would be showing him having periods of abstaining and periods of relapsing. It's hard for people to recover, and sometimes they never do, but the fact that they're trying to overcome their addiction is so important.

    something most people don't know is that with severe alcoholism, your body becomes so dependent on alcohol that going cold turkey can literally kill you. recovering from alcoholism can sometimes require you to continue drinking. obviously at lesser amounts until you can ween yourself off, but a recovering alcoholic having a drink is extremely normal.
    personally, it's not that i don't empathize and feel for shane. that kind of overt negativity makes me feel really icky and it's something i generally try to avoid, especially in virtual settings where i'm allowed to do so without consequence. due to my upbringing i just can't deal with people like shane and i do feel bad about that, but his entire character just rubs me the wrong way. compound with the fact that his heart events are triggering and upsetting to me, he's normally the last person i get full hearts with. sometimes you just dont gel with people, and that is OK too!

    i’m not someone who would consider myself partial to shane (don’t want to ever romance him but he’s definitely one of my first friends) but i have never understood the hate as soon as i actually saw his storyline. maybe it’s because i’ve dealt with my own problems but his personality really makes sense. as i get older and have more friends with similar life experiences to him i do find myself getting more and more annoyed by the community memes. he deserves to be loved and respected as someone who struggles but at the end of the day he still tries. he’s a great great character

    I also agree with the hate comes from people who seem to assume sparkling water is an instant cure for alcoholism and only one therapy session magically fixes depression.
    As for Shane still drinking after marriage, I think those dialogues appear on the "bad" days.
    As for people who say he's alcoholic, I don't think that's actually true. Borderline, maybe, but maybe not completely true. I'm thinking this because the game doesn't shy away from making it clear Pam is an alcoholic and these same people either never bring her up, or get angry when someone else does bring her up.
    I have noticed one thing in common with a lot of people who don't like Shane, though. If you show them a picture of what he looks like in real life, the first question is usually "Is he single?"
    I'm also wondering if maybe Shane had Jas live with Marnie for a little while before he moved to Pelican Town. There is a secret note with a picture of Marnie and Jas, and Marnie says Shane has lived with her for the past few months, not Shane and Jas. If this is true, this could have been because Shane was going through a lot with grief and likely the start of depression, and knew he wouldn't be able to care for Jas that well.

      He absolutely is an alcoholic. Source: Known several alcoholics. He literally gets blackout drunk every night, keeps beer in his room, you find him drunk and suicidal at the cliffs, he makes several comments about his liver, he wishes to die when lying in a pool of his own vomit at Marnie's (and Jas overhears him)....he's a hardcore alcoholic. Also, I suffer from chronic depression (controlled via medication) and I refuse to drink, take recreational drugs, or smoke, in order to deal. Because I know how it affects people.
      I apologize; I am not overriding your opinion. This is just my take on the matter.

    I think that one of the reasons why Shane gets that much of dislikes (I still wouldn't call it hate) is how people are viewing Stardew Valley in general - as a form of escapism. I don't think that many players play it for realism. We want to grow aesteticly pleasing looking crops, pet cute animals and kill serpents in the mines. We want to be a hero who saves the town from Joja and changes peoples lifes for better. Shane's story up to marriage is extremally rewarding with each cut scene showing grow and leading to happy ending (and blue chickens!). In this situation his post marriage stuff, and especially his dirty spouse room, feels a bit anticlimactic. It gives this uneasy feeling: "but I saved him, right? He should be happy, right? I'm a hero, right?". We, the players, are not used to situations were scars remain and not everything can be fixed by us. This is true that SV shows more realistic approach to depression and alcoholism, but when you're playing it for the whimsy and fantasy, this realism leaves bitter taste in the mouth.
    I love Shane's character arc and all his scenes, but I'm usually not marring him. One of the reason is of course his filfhy room - it is hard to make cute decor with THAT in the corner. But also I like sweeter spouses, who are telling you a lot of cute things (yeah, I'm guilty of being Elliott stan). However, Shane's marriage dialouge also has gems in it, with my favorite going something like this: "If I say something bad, it is not about you. You're imporant for me and I value you, but sometimes I still have worse days". I found it very sweet, since he is not very openly showing attachment.
    I think for the same reason, the need of escapism and fantasy, Harvey looses as spouse. In real life I would love to have a husband like him: dependable, inteligent, reliable, good looking, mature, etc. However, in fantasy world, when I have a chance to roommate a cute shadow monster from the severs... I'm going farm these 200 void essence.

    Very good first episode! I was drawing while listening to it and I would love to see more, I loved the rambles.
    I fully agree, I'm partial to Shane, when I first started playing last year, I was very compelled by his story, and I still am, he just doesnt grab my attention much/I'm not too interested in romancing him, but I like having him as a friend
    The memefication point really hits home. I unfortunately also have seen that a lot in my fandoms, and its honestly quite exhausting, especially in stardew, and especially when my favorite bachelor (elliott) gets the really rude memefication that completely mischaracterizes him because people judge him by what they assume he does rather than what he does, usually because of the bad faith memefication (when i started playing, i saw so much elliott hate that i thought he would be a jerk, and i wanted to befriend him out of spite and to see it for myself, and i ended up falling in love with him)
    (plus, on tumblr I've been looking more at the sdv confessions blogs and one submission really added another good point of how kinda gross it is that some people romance shane to "fix him" and I think it slots pretty snug on the other issues with how people talk and treat about him. And obviously fiction isnt reality, but I think its very telling how some people act about real world things by how they react to it in fiction)

    • @sodorart
      @sodorart  3 месяца назад +3

      I agree wholeheartedly. The memeification is so bad and it makes people literally accept certain things as fact about characters and it just makes no sense. It feels like their lore ends up being rewritten and characters are just labeled as "creep" or "weirdo" for no reason.

    Some people grew up with abusive alcoholics in their lives, so their reaction to Shane is bound to be seen through that prism - despite the fact that Shane, in fact, is not at all abusive.
    Personally, I think of Shane as a depressive who self-medicates with alcohol - not as an alcoholic per se. He does indeed improve - even if he doesn't go cold turkey. Cutting back is a good thing.
    As a spouse, I'm not going to infantilize my partner. He's a grown man who can decide whether he wants a brewski or three watching the Tunnellers lose. He's in bed by 10 pm every night and he isn't contemplating the existential void by the cliffs anymore - so I'll take that as a win.
    Also, I've gotta say - for a dismissive curmudgeon, he's remarkably easy to please. Play your cards right, and he'll dance with you at the first Flower Dance - and it isn't hard to do at all.

    I think there's some pretty privilege too. Shane is 30+ implied, shorter, and has holes in his shirt. He doesn't have Sebastian's chiselled features or Abigail's luscious locks so when he's being nerdy about games it doesn't hit the same for most people. And Hayley is a gorgeous blonde so when she's mean it's expected and doted on whereas someone's like Shane would just be seen as creepy or aggressive even though Hayley and Sebastian arguably are even MORE rude than Shane.
    Plus the word alcoholism is heavily stigmatised. Many people say "Shane isn't alcoholic. He's just coping with the bottle due to trauma" as if there's a difference. Som3 people straight up think Shane is abusive to Farmer + their children just because he's alcoholic.
    So my 2 cents. Loved your deep dive.

    People complain a lot about his spouse room, but even if you don't marry him his room at Marnie's stays the same, and also to me, the spouse room is supposed to be a space for them, not that you can't enter or anything but it's not like he's stinking up YOUR living quarters. And yeah the stains are gross even if they are just soda stains, but it's not like he's disrespecting you or neglecting himself, he probably takes care of the rest of the house; he's just a messy person (also there's a catalogue that allows you to be even grosser with your decorations lol)
    it's unfair to call it a "regression", he's just bringing a part of him, one that you might not love but that he's at least nice enough to keep in his dedicated room. And that's probably just who he is, with or without the alcoholism, he's a messy cave goblin and a lot of us can identify with that. Just don't marry him if you can't relate! ^^

    When you marry Shane it is also implied that he's a fat person, with the dialogue "I think I've lost a little bit of weight since I moved in with you" (or something along these lines), and even tho I'm not certain how that kind of bigotry translates to Pelican Town and its residents, (we know at least one person in town is kinda bigoted AKA George) since Shane came from outside Pelican Town, maybe back then he'd be bullied or ignored romantically or platonically, which would also be something that could've made him feel depressed and isolated and, as a coping mechanism, he'd start putting up walls to keep people out.

When we married him he still had relapses and that's normal, it's not because of the marriage. He likes life on the farm and raising his chickens, plus we saved him from Joja, who he hated, and he likes it when he becomes a father. I completely agree with what you're saying at the end of the video. It's one of the reasons I don't get involved in fandoms very often.
    Like, back it the day I used to follow a bunch of Skyrims pages and at some point it got to where just about every meme was the same joke being retold over and over again with no nuisance. Just how many memes about another hand touching the beacon or the frost troll do we need to see before people get bored?
    It was the first time that sort of thing really started to bother me and I just kept seeing it again and again in other fandoms too.
    I think Encanto is a good example, the amount of hot takes and and just some of the dumbest interpretations I have ever seen.
    And then there were the comedy skits. It seemed like they were everywhere for a while, I just could not escape them. And they are all essentially the same type of humor, let's portray all the characters in this movie as over the top a-holes.
    Personally I just think too many people spoil things. Because if there are too many people in the conversation then everything needs to be simplified and slowed down so everybody can keep up.
    And far too many people on the internet, they're just too quick to treat their preferences like their objective facts rather than just opinions.
    I can't even tell you how many times I've been called uncultured swine in the anime community because I don't watch whatever's popular right now. Or not a real anime fan. The number of anime I've watched is in the triple digits but sure I'm totally not a real anime fan 😒
    Fandoms just aren't fun anymore. I'd rather just enjoy something on my own than be bogged down by weird customs of a subculture.

      So the cheap "Must've been the wind" comment ends up burying the replies that are contributing to the conversation. Less visibility, less people responding to them and continuing the discussion. This continues and it's just the same 4 convos that stay on the surface level.

    As a Penny fan, I hear you about people criticizing Shane too early. I think people take first impressions a little too hard.
    I like the way you put not always needing to share everything as 'boundaries'. As a kid, I hated needing to share my crayons with the kid that has to grind them onto the paper with his fist instead of just holding it between two fingers. Yes, I'll share, but I also paid money for these and don't want them gone in a week. Same thing with playing with friends. If I'm playing with my friend right now, I don't want to need to play with three other people (who I would be happy to play with later) at the same time.
    That aside, you hit the nail on the head about Shane's likely feelings on the farmer. He may have nothing against the farmer, but seeing them may just remind him of his own life situation, and that would sting.
    As for the alcoholism discussion, why is it perfectly fine for me to enjoy a drink now and then, but not a recovering alcoholic? Sure, some people will "fall off" after one drink, but not everyone is like that. I think people are overly critical of anyone who has shown any kind of public weakness, and it does not help the recovery process.
    "Meme Culture" has definitely caused a lot of issues culturally and socially. (I'm not saying all memes are bad, just that not everything should be a meme or viewed through that kind of lens.)
    I love this relaxed format for the podcast. It opens up a lot of discussions and also lets us hear your interpretations of the characters more in-depth, and it's always great to hear other earnest interpretations of the same characters and events.
    On the topic of events, here's a podcast/video idea for you: if we were the farmer, there was no top-down camera, and no game limitations, how do you think some of these events would look like? How would you experience them? For larger events, if you didn't have time to experience it all in one year, what would one year's visit possibly be like for you? I think that might be a fun topic to consider.

    I love Shane too, and always marry him in game at every save.
    I agree and disagree with some things u said, I just want to have a discussion and explain things 😄
    For some context - I have dealt with alcoholism myself, not addicted, just a short term phase alcoholism, and also a loved one was an alcoholic, and if anyone heard their story, they would understand why they started drinking and got addicted to alcohol. they are in recovery phase for 10 years, so I do understand how the recovery works, that it's not one linear, I absolutely agree with that.
    Personally I feel like, with all of Shane's heart events and post marriage events and dialogues, I feel like, CA have done an amazing job with Shane's first 8 hearts, it felt like progression and it open Shane up to us more and more. Then when CA asked who do we want to add in as another marriage candidate, so we voted for Shane and Emily, then CA made new heart events for 10 hearts event, and 12 heart event, so I felt like, he didn't carry the momentum from the first 8 hearts with Shane, cus there was a pause in between 8 hearts, to 10 hearts, to 12 hearts. I want to look at this objectively as a gamer of Stardew Valley. Most of the other marriage candidates, their story arc and then we completed their story with marriage and 12 hearts event. Haley went from spoilt brat to a most lovely and thoughtful person. Alex went from a jock to a smart guy, for example. Because when u want to continue playing the game to reach perfection, however long it take you, it's unrealistic in Stardew, that Shane would be still dealing with his recovery for 10-70 years in-game trying to reach Perfection (I've seen some videos of some people showcasing their farm after reached perfection after 70 years so yes, 70 years is there lol) so with in mind of other characters having completed their arc at 12 hearts, I feel like Shane's story HAD to be linear and completed for us to enjoy being married to Shane until we reach Perfection. I know it's not realistic and I know that recovery is not linear, believe me, I've already explained the context and backstory of my experience, it is definitely not linear, but for Stardew Valley, where u spent years and years trying to reach perfection, and want to enjoy Shane as a husband and having completed his story arc, if that make sense?
    Also more backstory - the loved one stopped going to bar or pubs because as an addict, it's REALLY hard to see all those alcohol being served to other people and u can't have it, mentally, so I feel like it's unrealistic that Shane continues to go to saloon every single day for sparkling water. I know Stardew doesn't have much, but he could go to library and read a book, or look to buy a book for Jas, for example. Caroline, Harvey, Abigail and Penny goes to the library for reading. Or go for a stroll up to the mountain and just enjoy the nature. We have Haley and Penny who never stepped a foot in the saloon, Shane doesn't need to be at the saloon when he's in recovery arc, so I feel like that is realistic next step for Shane in his recovery arc, to be anywhere else but the saloon. Add in his schedule after the bus is repaired, is to go to watch the gridball game every Saturday as something to do for him when he is not at work.
    Hence why I'm using Immersive Shane mod because I'm not overall satisfied with how CA have finished Shane's arc, after his brilliant first 8 hearts, and the date 10 hearts was cute and we learnt that Shane like watching the gridball game. But I feel like, personally, 12 hearts event could be improved on and to really finish his story arc and have happier Shane.
    Also what you said about Shane in early days, doesn't want to talk to us, etc, and the way u explained it, is perfect and it's very possible and it is a deep lore of Shane, and for people who want shorter lore or simpler explaination - Shane deals with depression and anxiety as well, and is just trying to push us away, doesn't want to grow close to us. It's up to us to keep trying to befriend him so he know he's not alone, as he said in post 6 hearts event, when he talked to Marnie, that he know he have people that cares about him.
    Does this make sense? I just want to share my opinion. Sorry it's a very long comment LMAO!
    But I appreciate that u're also a Shane enjoyer and Shane defender! We need more Shane defenders!

    • @sodorart
      @sodorart  3 месяца назад +2

      I completely see what you mean with wanting his arc to be a little more fleshed out and polished, that's completely valid !!
      You're right, it would have been nice to see Shane pick up another hobby like reading or fishing or something like that, to get him out of the Saloon, OR, he could have started playing billiards in the saloon more, at least to be more away from the drinking. (He does play the arcade machines I think once a week but still). It does seem like his hobbies don't really flourish after he quits drinking and we know he likes video games, gridball and tending to the chickens.
      Oh wow, I'm going to have to look into this Immersive Shane mod, it sounds fantastic !! I'm actually wanting to do some modded Stardew videos, I'll add that to the list of mods to get!!
      Thank you for listening and sharing your thoughts !!!

      @@sodorart Imagine if Shane could take Charlie the chicken out for a walk, it'd be so damn wholesome! 😂 I would cry of happiness if I ever see that.
      Yesss, Immersive Shane, it keeps the vanilla Heart events but his schedule changes a little as the heart event progresses, like, after 6 hearts he doesn't always go to the saloon, and I think there was one day when Shane was nowhere to be seen on the map then I came to the bus and saw Shane walked out of the bus and talked to him and he said he just got back from counselling in Zuzu city so I thought that was a nice extra detail in his schedule. The mod kept his story lore friendly to the vanilla, just, better 12 hearts event, and some schedule changes as he goes in recovery so I'm loving the mod so far.
      There's also another Shane mod, called Shane Event Expansion, I think, it's very deep and his heart events all changed, not the same as vanilla events but its interesting.
      There was a mod that no longer works on 1.5 and 1.6, where Shane would start working at Pierre's after Joja closed down if u go on CC route, so least Shane would still have a job and have a wage, wish that mod would get updated to 1.6 but the author no longer updating it, sadly. There are some good Shane mods in Nexus, definitely check it out 😁

    Sorry, I commented on your recent Shane video asking for a video about post-marriage Shane before finding this! I'm about half way through, just want to share a couple of thoughts so far 😅 So 1 - Shane literally is not mean. He's abrasive, but I agree with everything you said. Haley on the other hand... is literally so mean dude 😭 like saying you would be attractive if it wasn't for your ugly clothes - like is this highschool and you're the prom queen? wtf dude. everyone laps it up though, it's fine for haley but not shane? who isn't even nearly as bad?? annoying. 2 - just to clarify my position on post-marriage Shane. I am totally fine with his depression not going away. I have pretty severe mental illnesses (have been hospitalised 3 times etc...) and I have made peace with the fact that they will never go away. They just need to be managed like any other chronic condition (taking medication, managing lifestyle like exercise etc... same as diabetes for example) and there will be ups and downs. My concern with Shane is that he shows so much progress with his journey to sobriety before marriage, but seems to totally give up after marriage. It's not framed as him slipping up now and then, it's framed as an ongoing thing where he regularly talks about drinking beer or cider, having hangovers, etc... He stops talking about drinking sparkling water and trying his best. I just find it very sad. It would be more palatable to me if 80% of the time he was going strong, and his dialogue reflected that, but every now and then he slipped up and drank. And if your relationship is bad, maybe that ratio flips. I also wish Jazzy bee moved in. To make game mechanics easier, maybe she could be the older child, so basically you only have one baby with Shane. That way very little would change in the code. I feel like kids need an overhaul regardless, and should grow up and go to school with Jas and Vincent anyway, so in my ideal world it would be the same (having dialogue, leaving the farm) as the kids with other spouses. Like Shane is her literal guardian. And he just leaves her with his aunt who Jas met for the first time a few months back...

    • @sodorart
      @sodorart  Месяц назад +1

      I agree wholeheartedly; I'm wondering if ConcernedApe made some slipups when doing the mechanics for what Shane does after marriage? Or if it was intentional? Cuz it really seems like not that much progress is made, and of course, progress isn't linear, but his 14 heart event should not have been THAT

Imagine if it was having a really deep heart to heart about his journey (pt 1), maybe going to the graves of his friends and learning more about his past (pt 2), having a special event with jas where he promises to do his best by her and that he sees her as his own daughter (pt 3) BEFORE SHE MOVES IN PLSSSS. I truly believed the regular 'hmmm beer or cider' and dialogue like that was a bug, but now that 1.6 came out and it hasn't been patched... I guess not? 🥲
