KIA Sorento Attempts Hell's Gate in Moab

  • This is the new 2019 Kia Sorento SX Limited and I was lucky enough to be a part of an awesome production crew challenged by the engineers of this vehicle to tackle one of the most intimidating trails in Moab Utah... Hell's Revenge.
    The only modifications we made to this brand new Kia Sorento was to mount up a set of BFGoodrich KO2 all terrain tires on the stock wheels, put a skid plate under the oil pan and on the hardest part of the trail... the climb up Hell's Gate... we disconnected the sway bars. That's it!
    We also enlisted the help of one of the most experienced off-roaders in the area Dan Mick to do the spotting and his son Richard did the driving.
    Yes, this is a "fish out of water" type of scenario and the Sorento wasn't designed for this type of off road use, but the engineers were so confident in the build quality of the drive-train that they gave us the keys and said GO FOR IT! And while I've never owned a Kia before, I totally respect this type of product torture test. Other than the back bumper cover being pulled loose on that one corner, there was no other serious damage to this thing.
    This is my first commercial as a host and I had an absolute blast doing it.
    Please help support my efforts to do more of this type of thing by liking and sharing this video for me!

    The Pre 2010 models were even better off road. Body on frame solid rear axle.. with low range transfer case.. 07-09 was best.. 3.8L V6. That they still use in the Genesis.
    But even the next generation is pretty good. Certainly one of the better FWD AWD options.. you can lock the center diff, and with the limited slip stuff it can go places... Small lift added and they are quite capable.
    Also.. 2010 and up are built in the USA in West Point Georgia, just south of Atlanta.

      Why? Do they still make the older model body on frame in Korea? Also a plant in Russia made them.
      Don't discount the new unibody model. It's pretty decent.. certainly the best of the newer FWD/AWD larger SUV's.
      They can go places 99.9% of people will never take them.

      5cylcoupe
      I've got a timing chain tensioners replacement video on my RUclips page. If your interested.
      That is one coming fail on both the 3.3 and 3.8
      A rattle at startup.. don't let that continue for too long.
      The timing chain tensioners are oil pressure fed. And they have a ratchet mechanism that is supposed to prevent them from backing off too much. That fails.. and they relax completely. He chains then flop around beating up the platic guids on the tensioners until oil pressure pumps them back up.
      Eventually the plasit guids getting worn down and now your wearing the metal off the tensioners... Putting powedered metal into your oil... Then.. BOOM.
      It's not a difficult job.. everything came apart easily. But there are a lot of steps involved.
      And get a good quality replacement kit from Korea. Not a cheap Chinese part.
      It's too much labor to deal with.. that.
      And the good one I got was even that expensive..
      Other than that.. I loved the car.
      Was like a Korean Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee..

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 6 лет назад +1

      5cylcoupe
      It will get pretty loud when they get really worn.
      If it does it consistent when cold.
      Ok listen with a door open or window.
      From inside the car it's sounds much quieter..
      Just keep tabs on it..
      These engines are very robust.. 4 bolt main bearings.. very stout bottom end.
      They still use this basic design and are pushing much much more power out of it.
      But you contaminate the oil.with metal.. any engine is going to go boom.
      Good luck.. enjoy your car.

I'd love that X3

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 лет назад +7

      Super happy to hear that you like it. I can promise that this is legit! The Kia engineers admit that this vehicle wasn't design for this extreme use but wanted to show off how durable the vehicle would be for advanced family adventures.

    • @jordanyang3066
      @jordanyang3066 6 лет назад +15

      This was actually very dangerous as the Kia has no wheel travel or articulation. That is a recipe for a rollover and not to mention he was gassing it which is even more dangerous as you beat the crap out of your rig.
      Please don t try this unless you have a fully capable rig.

    • @jordanyang3066
      @jordanyang3066 6 лет назад +7

      autoedit
      I think it's a mistake to promote this for "advanced family adventures". I would never take a stock crossover with my family on something like hells gate. I actually care about their well being, and this is very dangerous off roading.
      This reminds me of the people who think there invincible in the wet and snow cause they have AWD.

    • @inqufox1750
      @inqufox1750 6 лет назад +14

      Jordan Yang, Yo calm down man its just a video, anyone that sees this and thinks "yeah i'm gonna go out buy that crossover and try hell's gate" is a moron. This also isn't some super lifted, super horsepower V8 thing that's already threatening to roll over just going around turns at 3mph people who buy crossovers aren't anything like those that buy jeeps and trucks to actually go off roading, 99% of the people that see this looking to buy the crossover will most likely be like. "Why?" I mean at the end they basically tear the bumper off, no-one is going to want to take a BRAND NEW crossover up this simply because of the damage it will cause, yeah it can do it, that doesn't mean its a good idea.
      I mean it made it so obviously its capable, though a lot of vehicles are capable in the right hands.
