    I love these stories. It reminds me of my grandpa that built a Model T out of parts when they were relatively easy and cheap to find. We used to drive it in the local parades. It could be an arm breaker to start though in the hot summer heat.

    There’s a shop near me that does industrial babbit bearings. Massive things, sometimes 2’ in diameter. They get in these massive pillow block or thrust bearings for power plants, old machinery and steam plants. They use a massive torch to melt out the old babbit and pour press material in its place. I hear all kinds of stories from friends that have worked there over the years.

    First ship in Coast Guard had babbit bearing for drive motors. Boat had been docked for 10 years, had to redo bearings, had big electric soldering iron, roll of babbit material ( 1/4" ) and hand draw knifes to shave, used Prussian blue to find high spots to be shaved. Took long time.

    My dad told stories of stopping beside the road dropping oil pan and adjusting shims on engine bearings on his old coal truck several times. I couldn’t imagine the hardships older generations went through just to drive a few miles.

    I have been making custom babbitt bearings for industrial applications for almost 15 years. There is no other type of work that will teach you more about the machining trade than the industrial segment of babbitt bearings. We are the best in the business, Babbitting Service Inc.

He might think his stories aren’t interesting but I love to hear them and he’s got such a poker face I have to look carefully at him and think about what he says because if it’s a joke I certainly don’t want to tell people what I learned and find out ohh that must have been Ed joking 😂😂😀🇨🇦

    The last babbit rods were used by chevrolet in 1953 in the standard shift model it had inserts in the mains. The rods were Babette had dipper hooks dipped into little trays in the oil.pan oil pump fed the mains approx 15 to 20 oil pressure the powerglide model had inserts mains and rods higher oil pressure little more horsepower they were still slower than the stick shift. The shop I worked at we rebuilt 216 chevys we always had the rids rebabbited the boss felt pulling shims was a temporary fix. Stories of people actually using bacon rind. The old babbit rod chevys the more they knocked the better they ran

    Old guy told me story of moving hi family from Idaho to Oregon to work in the shipyards. Bad crank Babbitt on the road . Would drain the oil pull the rod put a piece of bacon rind in for a few miles and do it again. They made it somehow.

    A 96 year old fella I know said a raw hide glove worked the best. Cut the middle finger off. Stick it around the crank and bolt the rod cap back on. Screw the pan on and away you go. I believe that was on a model A ford.

    I'm coming across different information as to the Ford flathead starting at the '32 year which I would like to be clarified please? How many years after '32 did these V-8 castings have "babbitt" poured into them(casted) and was it the 1936 year when "insert" bearings were offered as the new upgraded design? Maybe it was halfway into the 1936 year that "inserts" were offered?

      😊I'm sure you miss him. Lost my father 4 years ago. He could repair anything himself. I saw a guy on RFDTV do babbitt bearings on an axle on one of those early prairie tractors. Mike's brother Rob on Amer Pkrs talked about the babbitt in the 216 Chevy. We can never know everything. Wish I absorbed everything my dad knew (I ran around playing sports often instead, but I did learn some of his knowledge)

    Fireball was Buick I forgot what olds called their straight 8 but fireball was the Buick overhead valve straight 8 fyi

    • @BarryTsGarage
      @BarryTsGarage  5 месяцев назад

      That is correct. Check out my 1937 Buick videos for more on that!

  • @russwabuda1556

    fireball engine was buick. those had babbitt bearings into the early 1950's. only the very last of the straight 8s had inserts. olds engines were particularly well designed. the connecting rods were rifle-bored to send oil to the wrist-pin. buick was the only gm brand to have overhead valve straight eight. however the first generation of cadillac V 16 was largely two buick 8s side by side. the second cadillac V 16 was more or less two cadillac V 8 end to end.

    I didn't know that the flathead V8 engines ever had babbitt bearings. Wasn't chevrolet using babbitt much later in the years after ford had abandoned that type bearing?

    • @BarryTsGarage
      @BarryTsGarage  6 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, it seems Chevrolet stayed with Babbitt quite a bit longer than Ford. when the small block 265 appeared in 1955 they very suddenly caught up.

    Ok so no more hemi in the dodges anymore. They are going to a straight 6 twin turbo I’ve always said I never liked ANY v8 platform diesel. All brands including the Nissan Titan v8 Cummins or the maxes or the strokers or Mack or Detroit (although cool) or cat. I just don’t like a v8 platform diesel. So ford comes out with eco boost v6. I was like WTF really?? I said right then they should have brought back the 300 straight six and turbo it. I figured if it works for diesel why not gas. And fast forward and BANG dodge is coming out with turbo straight 6!!!! What’s Ed’s thought on this????

    • @BarryTsGarage
      @BarryTsGarage  6 месяцев назад

      Great question, I will ask Ed… As a sidenote, the Australian Barra straight six has been pretty legendary if someone cares to dig into that!
