Yes, you may have seen an open hatch. Jet engines used in fighters when flying at low-speed need auxiliary air intakes because there is not enough air flow from the main intakes. All jet fighters therefore have auxiliary air intakes that are opened automatically, often trivially by feeling the depression that is created internally when not enough air enters. For example, the MiG-29 has the auxiliary vents above the main ones. If you watch my video ruclips.net/video/FeWOTAoa-m4/видео.html in some places you see them open and close.
