There isa reason why we say that Canadians are polite and nice people. This guy is a great example! Thanks for all the awesome tips! :D Great shirt btw! Brazil! :P
Only a few RUclips presenters can communicate with those of us on the distant side of a camera effectively and with a bit of fun thrown in. It helps to have a fine videographer like Max too. Jeff Thorman does instructional DYI video so very well. Once again...thank you from Utah.
Nice work. My only suggestion is before you install your top decking is to actually fill in amd tamp around the concrete blocking for your posts. Even completely assembled you could see some moving and twisting. Also I would double or tripple the depth of your lime stone screenings before it is ramped down. I used to use crushed stone mixed with alot of stone dust. The best part of using crushed stone is its ability to lock against each other after being compressed to tamped down from the tamper. Get it all levels and squared into place then come up the sides of the block 2 inches and tamp into place with a piece of 2x4. Keeps it all from twisting. Used this system for instaling large stone work and block work where people wouldnt pay for poured concrete. I just went with more depth of crushed stone and heavy tamping and compression. Mixed with the stone dust it would set up like concrete over time.
I think you are amazing, I like to do most of my home repairs. You have taught me a lot! I’m a woman, so people don’t think I’m capable! My husband calls me the man of the house! Because I love to do woodwork! What’s funny is that my Career is nowhere near all the stuff I do! I’m a nurse by trade! Thank you so much for all these great videos! Because of these I was able to renovate my bathroom, plumbing and all. Sheetrock tricks. You are great!
So I watched a ton of your basement finishing videos, and just finished sanding the drywall mud down here. Sitting on my plastic covered couch. Watching this because I’m building somthing sinilar as next years project! Lol. Thanks for the content.
I just started watching this guy's videos while I am stuck at home during this pandemic. I love his humor, easy way of explaining things, and his practicality. He gives the right details that I need. He makes me think that I can actually do it my self (now if he could convince my wife). I also like that his circular saw has that same feature on its cord, and in exactly the same place, as mine. What are the odds.
Being Brazilian, I just love it! I have finished my kids bedroom. Next step is the deck. I should you the video and we want to see where we can fin a block. We are just doing the front small deck
I have watched so so many "how to" build a deck videos and got absolutely nothing out of them but intimidation and confusion. Its like they really do want to show you "how to" You are the Best man!.. Im ready to do this! Thank You!!! .. I'll be writing you in the comments if I have any questions.. I watched your other video 1st. building a ground level deck.. and I'm in at 32:14 on this one. Most Informative, Straight to the point, No B.S. Thanks again and I'm a Subscriber for life.. Keep up the Great work.
Hey that Advantage Lumber place is in Sarasota, FL right down the way from us... I had never heard of them until a Canadian RUclipsr puts a banner up with that location listed haha go figure... I'm about to build a floating deck as a home for a new hot tub and this is perfect, we're gonna have to check them out this weekend!
When I worked for another company we rebuildt a deck over a rolled rubber roof. The new exotic lumber was Ipe and none of us knew anything about Ipe! We attached the deckingwith stainless steel screws and hidden fasteners, and within a couple of screws it became apparent we needed to pre drill every hole as the SS screws were just snapping! The wood was so hard the drill bits were junk after about 20 holes. We also got a qt. of liquid wax which we had no idea what it was for! We found that out soon as the first few boards installed, within 2 days were badly checking and cracking. The wax was for any fresh end cuts! The deck took us about 3weeks longer because of all the drilling and multiple other issues! We also had to make all the railings out of Ipe! We both ended up fired because we took too long!
Love the chick who was using her hands to put dirt into the shovel. I sometimes forget that many people spend their life without having ever done manual labor.
Love this channel and it's videos. Have watched so many and learned so much. I HATE to be the safety equipment guy when I know it gets made fun of here. I admire the safety glasses when using the grinder. But holy shit guys, ear plugs! Even with the battery hand held DeWalt drill, cumulatively that sound will ruin your hearing. The grinder, the circular saw, over and over....bye bye ears. I'm a sticker for hearing protection. I love music and don't ever want to lose that ability. Those watching at home, but a cheap pair of over ear muffs and it's all good. No need to go overly expensive.
Ear protection is so damn important.. I used a handheld air compressor for about 15 minutes while doing car detailing and didn't wear ear plugs. I've had permanent tinnitus for over 2 years now and regret it every day. Please wear ear protection.. having a constant ringing in your ears will drive you insane.
@@CrackaSource sorry man. I also have tinnitus from military exposure to loud engines. You just don’t think I’m the moment “hey I’ll have trouble hearing later I’m life from this direct moment....”
I love the video, I have a deck project in the near future. My only criticism would be the sun sail post anchorage being a little too close to the edge of the slab, especially the corner that broke off and was adhesive'd back on - I sure hope that doesn't fail in the future
Make 2 frames , decide height and screw a piece of wood between corners of frame and ground with off cuts. You can use folding wedges to make adjustments to the 2nd frame on the uneven slab. Screw frames together and then you know where all the fixings go. Saves time and you have your measurements.
Did you use screws or bolts to attach the inside corner stabilizers? size and length of screws/bolts? What size and length of drill bit did you use to drill the holes on those inside corner stabilizers? Thanks for your great teaching/instruction. Your techniques have helped me in so many projects I almost lose track.
How do you know when to to use a concrete mix around your post and when can you use just the hole and a concrete block? I am looking to build a floating deck and purgola, but I am unsure of how to begin. Thank you!
How is the dude from Gold River in the traveling videos I watched too get some pointers before traveling too South America also in the DIY videos I watch to build a deck???? mind blown...... can't remember your name sir but you keep making content for me to watch hahaha
Jeff, question here: Why would you ever choose to use "no contact" lumber for a floating deck? Is it stronger or something? If the price is comparable, it seems like buying "no contact" would be a no brainer with its obvious benefits.
Most likely because most ground contact treated lumber is AC2 which is an ugly green color. The pressure treated lumber matches his nice hardwood panels. Also he’s not technically contacting the ground so he is probably fine here
Our home is currently being built (we take possession between January and March) and will come with a tiny deck (think Blue Collar Comedy Tour skit). Instead of paying the builder $6k to build it, it'll be more fun for me to build it and videos like this help. :D
the saw at the end doesn't turn on faster by design. Most motors like that pull more then the stated amps at full startup. its designed not to flip a 15 amp house breaker. I have the same saw and its great!
Thank you for the informative video but it would help me a lot to know the name of all the products and tools used for this project as English is my second language
Hi Jeff. Great video as always. Planning to tackle a ground level deck here in Eastern Ontario in the spring. In this video, was there a reason you opted for box beams instead of directly point-loading the beams on the 4x4 posts? I used the "deck block on limestone screenings" approach 3 years ago when building a fire wood crib (based on your shed building video.) It handles the freeze/thaw cycles of our winters very well. Structure remains solid, plumb, and level, even with the weight of a cord of wood. Cheers.
simplicity more than anything else. I can adjust the box beam but once you cut a post the only direction you can fix a problem is lower to the ground. I find the box is just perfect for diyer's
Hello. I’m new here. I’m Brazilian and my company sells brazilian plastic lumber for decks in the USA. I love the decking business since I’m started 12 years ago. Could you tell me what's the blade model?

Great to see Samuel & Audrey, your guys Vietnam/Sapa video was the catalyst for our 4 week tour a few years ago, cheers!
Absolutely LOVE Togo!! Beautiful dog, and so cute to see him observing you guys..
Didn't like you when the video started but ended up hating that guy you helped out and loving you great video thank you! Your a boss
You are John Wick of carpentry. What a pro! Love the work.

Yep totally agree, a Brazilian always looks nice.
Usually like this guys simple explanation on jobs, but he really made a simple job look difficult here!
yup i noticed that too
Love the bit about the weather on 56 minutes. Welcome to our world (the UK)! We play the weather lottery every day!
WOW! Not only did that deck and pergola come out beautiful. But, that GS dog was just as beautiful! Great job guys!

I think we can all agree the true MVP is the dog.
Wasn't paying attention to intro and had to do a double take when I saw Samuel and Audrey! Didn't know you guys collaborated. lol
I have learn so much watching your videos
Cheers Maria, Happy to help!
That product placement was so smooth that I might have to go out and buy that saw
I love how you say it’s not time to cut corners while painting a cut corner;) 1:05:00ish
LOl, odd isn't it!
Enjoy watching your video , you make work fun ! And love the " Laugh"
Absolutely spot on,,,thank you for taking the time to actually show us. ..thank you
Deck looks fantastic! I love that German shepherd.

Canadians are a different breed of creature... 😁
I know the intent was to keep it simple with everyday tooling, but a laser level makes it so much easier to set your heights and worth the investment.
Or you can just get a clear flexible tube and fill it with water.
@@alexfromoz laser levels are cheap nowdays and very useful in pretty much ever project. It is a good investment.
Jeff makes me want to move to Canada! I don’t care which Province or territory!
I like the cord on his circular saw. I've got the same one.
Hands down my fav channel. Cheers brother✌️
Cheers Chris!
Amazing work as usual. You should think about narrating audio books - you have a perfect voice for it...

Totally agree...I give that structure 2 yrs tops.
lol, first time enjoyed watching the embedded commercial. :D
Luv your vids, learned so much over last 5 yrs 😊,great ideas, great personality

@32:00 did you ever tie the joists to the bottom beams? Anyone can push the deck from the side and it's moved.
A true Foreman coffee in hand and shovel to the helper😎
I love your choice of woods you use in decking...I am SOOOO in love with the Cedar more than anything!!!! :D
You would love our place. Exposed cedar beams everywhere.
Great deck and pergola but I hope those sails were temporary. A bit like hanging a bedsheet up as a curtain.
Hey Jeff, I may have missed the link, just looking for that handy looking crescent wrench/ratchet tool from Crystal tools
I don't see it either
that's a huge deck. I can't wait to sit on it.
I remember seeing that couple on a travel video!
Genus. You are so good at everything!
Just finished it. Pretty good. The sails look tacky. But still a decent look
You make it look so easy. I am planning on building my own deck this summer hopefully lol. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
how did it go?
I so want to build a deck now!
Hi Jeff, love your videos. Is it possible to do a video on how to and options to DIY sunrooms? Thanks
shoulda added a 3$ string line level great video! loved it
Gotta love a Brazilian
Safety glasses are a must when using power tools
Jeff knows his DIY videos are my favorite!!!🥳
28:26 "Let's get going" - Jeff imitating Matt Risinger made me laugh far too hard
Incredible project and the way you bring out the details it makes it easy to follow.
Did you use screws or bolts to attach the inside corner stabilizers? size and length of screws/bolts? What size and length of drill bit did you use to drill the holes on those inside corner stabilizers? Thanks for your great teaching/instruction. How much weed did that new helper smoke this morning Jeff.. Lol
hello, I always watch Samuel & Audrey videos. I will do my own pergola.
Go for it!
How do you know when to to use a concrete mix around your post and when can you use just the hole and a concrete block?
I am looking to build a floating deck and purgola, but I am unsure of how to begin. Thank you!
Does the deck move a bit since it is not anchored to the ground?
I love the long coat Gsd!
This was awesome! The dog was too cute!
Nice Dulux mixing stick!
Excellent Show/ I watch everyday can never get enough enlightenment & inspiration
Great video w a lot of comedy. Good job.
Big Quest. Do you use regular screw or Torque screw T25 for all that wood.
Production first for sure, this man is working!

How were the joists in the floating deck attached to the box beam?

So does the black plastic things attach to the concrete with a fastener? What keeps the wood pallet squares attached to the black things? Thanks!
In a 16x12 floating deck, how many cement blocks would you need?

What would be the application difference between using blocks or not?
