Even though these two episodes were literally made with mostly sketches, stills and reused footages, I can still appreciate them. Especially the part where in a parallel universe Shinji is still living a normal and happy life with his family and friends. I can't help but thinking this is where the inspiration for the rebuild movies came from.

    • @Di-Sapien
      @Di-Sapien 7 месяцев назад +1

I feel like the reused stuff boosts it. Since they're in Human Instrumentality, they no longer experience reality, so the only way to experience it is through memories which can't be altered, so it uses the footage from them.

Just to clarify. The next movie, The end of Evangelion, is basically episodes 25 and 26 all over again. In fact the story picks up right after what happened in episode 24.
Episode 25 and 26 in the anime basically show what's happening in the protagonists' heads due to the non-existent budget of the show at that time, that's why we don't see "real events", but the psychology of each character with barely any animation. In the movie you'll get a more conventional continuation to the events, just like the first 24 episodes of the show.
The Rebuilds movies are like a reboot of the franchise, but not exactly, you'll get it eventually. Just don't expect the characters to be as complex and deep as they were in neon genesis evangelion, the rebuilds in certain parts feel like a light version of the original show, or just style over substance in others, it's better to treat them as their own thing since they are still fun, they are just a really different experience compared to the original eva, especially after the first rebuild movie

I really like that immediately your first words were in acknowledgement that the angels, evas, none of it even matters, it's just a means to an end. It's really cool how the contents of the show were just a means for Anno to capture and reach late 90s shut-in Otaku, and desperately warn them of the growing disconnection in our society, told through the lens of his own depression. You can actually analyze the storyboard and figure out what really happened, but there is intentionally nothing to give you confirmation. This made the story feel more personalized to each individual watching it. Though, Otaku hammered Anno with death threats for this ending. People wanted enough to confirm their nerdy theories and continue getting lost in lore/entertainment. I think you'll find the ending movie even more interesting. Congratulations! 👏👏👏

This is a myth created and spread by Amanda Winn Lee (Rei's VA). The letters shown in the End of Evangelion are mostly supportive, and were actually written by the studio staff - they are not fan mail. There only known "hate mail" type incident that happened was some christians vandalizing the studio wall with graffiti.

The original English dub of the alternate universe section is SPECTACULAR - you get Shinji and Asuka in the background arguing about Shinji morning wood, you get Gendo and Yui planning to have a quickie before work, you get Rei uttering the immortal line “Who are you and why are you defending him? Are you riding his baloney pony???”

Beautiful reaction as always guys, Thankyou and Congratulations 👏.
I’m so glad that Josh and Mehgan get the heart of Eva. Especially Josh as a first time watcher. Can’t wait for the End of Evangelion.
It was brought up in a previous react episode but Evangelion is a messenger of God, in contrast to the Angels that do his will.
I watch Eva in Australia when I was 15 with my mum (it was the first anime apart from the mainstream shows of Pokémon, digimon, DBZ, sailor moon etc that we had watched, more like the first true anime) on a channel called SBS, that showed a lot of Anime, world movies and shows. When I originally watched it I really didn’t understand what was going on, it took me watching the movies to truely understand its soul.
It remains the best series of all time for its ability to understand and show true human reactions and emotions, and the symbology and synchronicities of our own world and society are truer than any other, even in a fictional universe that only parallels our own.
Anno, the creator of the story/show really did his homework, no other story/show has come close to the depth of his knowledge.

This is the true ending and he is exactly right. It is essentially a psychological exploration of coming of age for adolescents children in a Japanese school. The self imposed sufferings and imagination of psychologically troubled children, which many people can identify with. Sexuality, depression, death, life, abuse, trauma, family tragedies and dysfunction, existential crisis, anxiety and so on. All of the details of this fictional world are essentially meaningless and its futile to create a consistent narrative for the lore as that was never the purpose. The following movies are just fan service, or rather, a fuck you to the fans for not appreciating this ending and a money grab for the studio. I don't want to say its all an allegory but it's definitely all open to metaphorical applicability to nature of human existence.

We hope that children, the audience, will see the "reality in a dream" of this project and animation, and feel what it means to "live by one's own will. We also hope that when they grow up and become adults, they will consider "justice and love in reality" with their own "reason.

I have never in my life enjoyed watching someone's reactions like yours! Guys, thank you very much! Thanks to you, I experienced all the emotions again, as for the first time. Speaking of the psychological aspect of these episodes, I happened to be almost a complete copy of Shinji mentally, and when I finished watching this anime for the first time, I signed up for a psychotherapist and began my journey of fighting depression, which I did not dare to do for several years. This anime really had an incredible impact on me. No matter how hard it is to watch, it makes you really think about all the shit that you are doing to yourself, building walls and protecting yourself from people and even from yourself. A brilliant masterpiece, and I'm incredibly glad that I remembered everything in detail thanks to you. You are the best!
P.S. I caught some crash on Josh, while I was watching all your reactions, lol. The course of thoughts and emotions is very exciting, it's always nice to see such people ❤

This first season of EVA is essentially Anno’s critique of his adolescent audience as well as himself. That’s why Shinji’s character defies so many anime protagonist tropes. It’s almost this tough love approach to get anime fans out of their own self indulgent heads. Lots of autobiographical stuff regarding Anno & his relationship with his own father can be found in the characterization of Shinji & Gendo as well.

  • @tonberry2670

This is basically happening alongside EoE. Now imagine seeing this first WITHOUT being aware that EoE was going to be made.
There's a reason that everything is centering Shinji. That will be explained in EoE. There's a lot that's going on. Also, budget and time constraints really fucked the final two episodes.
Granted, EoE isn't exactly better in terms of how clear things are.
Imagine looking back at all the things you've endured throughout your life. All the experiences. The people you've met. What the interactions you've had with these people have done to you.
These things have all play a huge role in defining the "you" that exists today.
But what if things were so different? What if you didn't have all these experiences?
    Would you still be you?
Would you still "exist as yourself"?
Here's what NGE says to answer that.
    Absolutely.
Reality is what you make it. The Slice of Life Shinji is the Shinji who had everything that the Shinji we all know could have wanted. That Shinji could have potentially existed just as much as the Shinji we all know. That Shinji is just as real. At the very end, the Shinji that we recognize is the Shinji that exists.
It's not the approval of others. It's not your tangible use to others that define your existence.
Your existence defines your existence. And the fact that you exist gives you your self-worth regardless of what your perception of the world around you says.
We all help each other make sense of our existence. We all influence each other and help us to make sense of the crazy world around us. But we can find our own truth.
Know our true selves. Know our limitless possibilities and step forward.
That's what Shinji learned. Learn to acknowledge himself and his own value and he'll be strong enough to overcome all the pain that he'll face in the future.
What happened in the grand scheme of things will be explained.

Some important production context (no spoilers) : End of Evangelion is basically the original plan for the last two episodes that they had started working on. For a few different reasons they came to the conclusion that they couldn't air that plot when it was supposed to and decided to finish it later (first the plan was to release those episodes straight to video, but ultimatly they got put togheter as a film). Instead they resurrected a bunch of more abstract ideas they had really wanted to explore in Episode 26 spesifically, but either couldn't work out a way to fit into the structure of the plot well or didn't have enought time for.
Earlier the plan was to have most of the plot wrapped up in episode 25 and have the abstract stuff in 26. End of Evangelion is where the plot went, while the last two TV episodes is, as I said, where a lot of the more abstract stuff they couldn't fit in the original plan for the final two episodes went.
Therefore I personally tend to recommend watching EoE before the last two episodes, but other people think it's better to give people closer to the same experience as when the show first aired. Either way both versions of the ending complement eachother.

These two episodes definitely evoke a ton of emotion and were presented in a rather unique, abstract way.
One thing that always kinda bothered me about this ending, however, was seeing Gendo standing there, applauding alongside everyone else, pretending as though he wasn't the cause of just about everyone's problems for the previous 24 episodes.
I remember thinking to myself, "Really? Who the heck invited this guy, and more importantly, when are they gonna start hurling rotten tomatoes at him, or something?"
I dunno. Just seemed like the entire cast conveniently forgot about all of the horrible stuff he did.

I understand the sentiment because it would appear throughout the series that Gendo is a horrible person. However look at it from his perspective. He understood before yui went into unit 1 that the goal of Gerhin and later Nerv was to guide and bring about human instrumentality the dissolving of the AT fields and the merging of everyones hearts. Not just everyone alive but everyone who had ever lived. This means that any death or atrocity commited to reach this end would ultimately be meaningless as everyone would basically have a full understanding of each other and everyone would be reunited with everyone who had died. Of course Gendo eventually learned SEELE's true agenda to use the eva series to become Gods retaining their AT fields and living forever as all powerful beings while everyone else languished in the chamber of guf. So he devised his own plan after yui was absorbed to be with her by causing instrumentality before SEELE and thus reuniting himself with her in unit 1 so they could be together forever. To him any sacrifice or awful deed was worth this. However Yui had her own plan to be absorbed by unit 1 then give instrumentality to Shinji instead of Gendo because she loved Shinji more than anything even Gendo and she also knew that ultimately Rei would reject Gendo's selfish desire and that shinji would be capable of chosing the right thing by ending instrumentality and ushering a new age of understanding through the power of the heart. How she knew these things is not explained but I call it womanly intuition. So Gendo appearing in the end is exactly, ironically, what both Gendo and Yui wanted because ultimately every human are all connected through the soul of lilith because they all derive their AT field or unique conscious expression of identity through lilith. Also ultimate forgiveness happens at the end because every human is fully exposed. The walls that seperate their hearts are gone and all them understand and ultimately, because of shinjis choice to embrace being human and end instrumentality, accept each other unconditionally. Then it was given to all humans the choice to re-enter the earth and assume their human form with a AT field or to stay merged with liliths soul in the chamber of guf but at peace rather than tormented because they had all of their hearts merged. Alternatively if SEELE had gotten their way everyone except SEELE would have lived in agony unable to percieve each others hearts because instrumentality aould have only been partial as the members of SEELE wouldn't have merged thus leaving the loop open because they would have the AT fields still. So actually Gendo was not the monster or the evil man that it would seem as his plan did involve him merging with yius soul in unit 1 (I know that sounds the same as SEELE's plan but bear with me) the difference is that he wanted to bring everyone's soul with him to have instrumentality happen in unit 1 making everyone into the God. However Shinji's was a better solution to lonelinesa becauze the chamber of guf would have been empty and no one would ever be able to have an AT field or assume a form other than being in the eva. In conclusion Shinji's instrumentality was the best one for humanity because it gave everyone the oppotunity to become seperate to experience love in the fullest rather than being just a collection of memories, stagnant, unable to truly experience each other. Even more alone than the loneliness of being human. This is what rei sees when she stops Gendo from starting the third impact and why she decided that Shinji would chose correctly to experience the pain of seperation to be truly loved.

End of Evangelion is more torment than this. Ep 25-26 like that because of rejection from TV station. That why real ending go to Movie Theater which less regulate.
But rebuild will give your life back. Since the director solve his own mind and find happiness in his life so he end rebuild with his new perspective.

let me explain something, the Rei toast scene is what made the trope, however it's actually not the 1st time it's done, it was 1st done in an older manga except the girl has a dinner roll instead of toast

I'm probably one of the very few people who agree with you. I thought the quasi-Michael Bay levels of CGI, especially during the last two films became pretty insufferable. It probably wouldn't have bothered me as much if the characters somehow managed to feel like the same ones I grew to care about from the tv series (but unfortunately, they just don't).

Welcome to Introduction to Psychology 101: Eva Edition
A lot has been said about the Netflix dub, and early on it was unquestionably rough, but i for one think that by the end here and in the movie they knocked it out of the park.
I do miss Spike Spencer's little adlib through the credits in episode 26 though. Gutbusting.

Considering the show ran out of budget for these episodes and they had to LIMIT to the extremes the actual animation int he episode... the Stylistic choice they made to compensate for it was amazing... Instead of actually having the full team of animators doing all the drawing work under money and time pressure they went for lost of still images paning, zooming and rotating as well as "filtered" photos that get you into a state of mind that allows you to follow the psychological aspect of the story...

I watched this when it first came out, and still consider it the best TV show ever made. Because of what happened with the fans afterwards, no one is going to make another show of this caliber again any time soon. So it will remain alone at first place for at least the next 50 years.

In 25 and 26 episodes complimentation (Human Instrumentality project) happened and Shinji didn't turn it down. He overcame his complex like Asuka and Misato did. Complimentation of humanity is about overcoming all human individuals bad sides in creating collective unified soul. In TV series at the end it happened and we see what happened at the end when Shinji could begin to love himself and everyone became a single soul without bad sides of individuals
In movie complimentation never happened as Shinji refused it and prefered return to mortal body from primordal LCL ocean like Asuka did too
25 and 26 episodes and EoE are different outcomes
