    The biggest problem with the student loan debt crisis is that there are no checks and balances. The schools can charge whatever they want and the lenders will lend it without any research on the earnings potential of the degree they are lending the funds for! If you want to get a business loan, you have to have a business plan that shows projected revenue based on market research. If you want to get a loan to buy a house or car, the bank appraises the value of the asset they are loaning money against......... but when it comes to education, we let naive kids borrow $200,000 for a bachelors degree in history and women's studies!! It's a scam from the beginning.

    • @King-dp7cm
      @King-dp7cm 11 месяцев назад +65

      A scam!!! Absolutely predatory and it’s disgusting how this country allows for kids to be taken advantage of like this. Thanks for this comment.

    • @joshuaarseneau5891
      @joshuaarseneau5891 11 месяцев назад +28

      That’s because republicans and Democrats both decided they wanted to “help” people to go to college by backing these loans. Because like you said why would a bank give money to a child who has no record of being able to pay it back. When the government approved these loans being backed tuition went up 60% because all the colleges starting competing to get this money by adding all these non essential things to colleges. When government says they want to help we need to say “No thank you!”

    • @maxine2564
      @maxine2564 11 месяцев назад +26

      @kylia2009, I see your point but isn’t ultimately OUR responsibility to ensure we can make a living from the education we obtain? Furthermore, although few probably give it the attention it deserves but loan entrance counseling talks about these issues. 🙂✌🏾 IMHO, the real issue is the cost of college. Calculus is the same whether you learn it at a community college or a private university.

    • @kylia2009
      @kylia2009 11 месяцев назад +30

      @@maxine2564 yes it's true that college cost way too much. The schools don't have any real incentive to lower their prices. IMO, If banks and the fed start refusing to loan over a certain amount for a degree, schools will get motivated fast!
      Also, I don't think the average person knows loan counseling is even available. I'm all about taking accountability.. I just think we need to be realistic about the fact that everyone does not start off with the same resources and circumstances in life. A lot teens are coming from homes with parents who have very little financial education. Also the emotion behind going to college and getting a degree is the same emotion that causes people to buy houses they can't afford.... it's a perfect storm for teens and young adults to be exploited.

    • @King-dp7cm
      @King-dp7cm 11 месяцев назад

      @@maxine2564 if you can find a teenager that knows about loan counseling than I could see you point. Many of these teens are first generation students who are figuring out college on their own. It’s predatory. No way to spin it. I own that I have student loans and take responsibility for it. But no one ever explained toe the impact it would have on my life all these years later. Even when I was paying $600 a month, it was only enough to cover interest.

      @amyyleighanne if you work for the federal government, have 120 qualifying payments & have federally back loans, they get forgiven once you have been paying them consecutively (COVID-19 break counted towards my forgiveness). I completed a form, had my manager sign it, and submitted it. Then I got a refund check from Dept of Education for a couple hundred dollars & a letter saying my student loan account was closed & no balance due. Then it dropped off my credit report. Seniors who go back to school should get a break. I was told to go back to college at 59yrs of age to enhance my 25 yrs of experience in the workplace. Well, the recruiter failed to tell me the gamble, corporations don't hire seniors at the rate of pay for a young college student. Thus, that degree has yet to pay for itself, pushing retirement into my mid-80's to pay the thing off.

    What I always tell students, having borrowed student loans from 4 different colleges over my career, is these income based driven payment plans are great as a foundation. Continue to apply for one through the entire duration of paying your student loan. However, you are not paying that minimum amount. You are still attacking your loans aggressively. What you are going to use that program for is a safety net if some emergency should happen, you are only obligated to pay a small amount.
    For example, when I was bringing home roughly $64,000 a year, my income based plan required me to pay $343 per month. I was paying $2,000-$2200 per month. So that $343 was my safety net if something crazy happened and I couldn't pay $2,000.

    @anthonyoneal I agree with parents not taking out loans for their children, but the government uses the student’s parent’s income until they are 24 years old. If a student wants to go to school on their own merit, they have to wait until after 24 (or one of the other qualifying events to be considered a independent student). Or they have to get private loans. Even if they pick a cheap school, an 18 year old doesn’t have $5000 to put towards college every year. Most parents of these current college kids have students loans of their own so they don’t have extra money to put towards their child’s college. The system is fundamentally flawed.

    If this is the case for repayment, then they should limit the amount of aid that you recieve from the government based on the projected earnings of the field that you major in. That would be equally as risky for the borrower, but the responsibility falls on them to finish the program and follow through. We need to disincentivize people from taking out loans for fields that don't earn enough to even get started on paying back the debt.

My college is a healthcare graduate school, PA program is about 35k/year, nursing 25k/yr, PT 30k/year my program is pharmacy and tuition is 51k/yr. For these programs it’s not easy to work and go to school when you spend over 40 hours /wk either in class or on clinical rounds. I worked on and off but I took out more like 72k/yr to cover rent and car insurance and my job covered luxuries. This would be a good thing to do but the schools are charging that much because the government makes it available. Colleges are simply a business who raises their price to gain profit for their product and service because the government is handing out any amount of money to 18 year olds. So the government just needs to put a cap on themselves, but their purpose for this is to get as many young people in debt because people who are in debt are more likely to be controllable. That is why the government is the only lender in the world who will not only offer a payment plan that does not even cover the monthly interest, they will actually recommend that payment plan.
      They want people in debt, and they don't want people paying their debt off.
      My idea would be what you said, and to pass a law that restricts all student loans to be under 2%. This will make them much more manageable and the lender can still make some money.

I took care of an elderly gentleman that had an outstanding student loan, they garnished his Social Security and he was forced to work to make his living expenses. He had to work despite the fact that he was a brittle diabetic (they found him passed out at work more than once), plus he’d had a couple strokes, was in end stage kidney failure on hemodialysis. He’d had his doctor, kidney unit etc ( numerous people) write letters to say he was too sick to pay rhe student loans and that he needed his Social Security, but they ignored all the letters. Now that’s slavery they chase you to the grave.

    Ok I’m calling them tomorrow. My FL rent is astronomical bcz of uncontrolled increases.
    To your knowledge, can I send in my lease to prove there’s nothing left over to give them anything? After my living expenses? I am single no dependents.
    Thanks for your video!

      If you make over $100k, couldn't you just pay the entire $12k this yr, at $1k-2k per month?

    Payed all my unsubsidized off ($6k) with a 0% Apr business credit card for first 18month (that doesn’t report to personal credit bureaus). Payed 4K cash. And put the remaining 10k on save plan. About to get a house soon so I had to knock a good amount off my personal credit report and improved score

    In 2020 I had 70k in student loans. Between now and then my health took a turn and I was diagnosed with MS. Yet, today I have 17.8k left to pay. I am going to pay it off next year. I am being super aggressive. I am also on the SAVE plan. My payment is 10.64 a month.

      Look into the total disability forgiveness program. You may qualify to have them forgiven. My aunt has MS and had hers forgiven.

    You didn’t mention that if your loans are graduate only, that the SAVE program repayment timeline until forgiveness is 25 years, not 20. So those of us with graduate loans who have already been in repayment for 8, 10, etc + years MAY not actually save by switching from the PAYE program. Any additional details how to calculate this out? Thoughts?

    If my wife and I just graduated college should we apply for the SAVE plan? We made about 40k during the last tax year when we were in school. We have about 30k in loans. I’m thinking that we could have zero interest then knock out the principal quickly in the following year.
    Hoping to get a response today. I’m going to be looking more into this after work

    There is a cap on what you can borrow. They over charge forcing you to borrow more.

    I have loans from Grad S hool...I've been trying for 2 weeks to speak with my loan processor. I've just been on "hold" (no music/recording to emphasize that I am on hold) for 15 / 20/45mins. We can only call during business hours, I call during my 1 hr lunch, I'm just trying to speak with the company that took over my student loans. This will be my first time paying on a student loan.

    Does the interest stop on the SAVE plan or continue to accrue. If so, you may as well do the regular student loan deferment?? Any thoughts

      Questioning the same

    • @jonathanwilliams3240
      @jonathanwilliams3240 11 месяцев назад +6

      DO NOT DO DEFERMENT!!!! The interest does not accrue under SAVE. They got rid of negative amortization. Any interest beyond your required payment each month gets forgiven. If your required payment is zero, all interest gets forgiven. Great for if you're in a rough spot for one year, trying to up your income and get to a point where you can pay it back. You can also make an extra payment toward principle instead of the interest after the interest forgiveness is applied each month to pay it off quicker. You can also take advantage of a high yield savings account and make your payments into that while qualifying for a 0 payment year, and gain interest instead of lose interest, then apply all of that to principle after the final interest forgiveness is applied in a year when you make more than the limits to qualify for 0 payment. I agree with the video's take on it, sign up for the program, take advantage of the rules, but still be aggressive about repaying.

    • @leslielewis40
      @leslielewis40 11 месяцев назад +1

      You can only do a deferment if you’re in school or have some type of hardship and hardship deferments are only short term. So that’s really not an option.

      Mine was automatically converted to the SAVE from REPAYE and there is no additional interest with $0 payments. Two more years and mine will be forgiven.

    Parents with parents plus loans can enroll in the save plan but they have to consolidate their loans and then they can apply to the save program.
