Regarding the epidendrum: a lot of light (can tolerate direct sunlight), feed and water well, let the media approach dryness, use mainly bark because it needs good air circulation at the roots (you can add some moss if you find it difficult to keep up with the watering), don't let the media be bone-dry and it grows all year round so no need for a dormant period or any form of rest.
And regarding the "maxillaria", from what I see it is in fact a cymbidium orchid. That said it is a terrestrial orchid that needs a well draining mix (mostly bark though - a combination of bark and sphagnum moss 50-50 or 70-30 should do the trick), can tolerate direct sun and it is advised to give it lots of light, needs a cooldown in temperatures in autumn and winter (as low as 10-15 degrees, not lower) in order to bloom as well as a difference between day and night temperatures, feed and water well, media should be always moist but not soggy, they like to be root bound in the pot (from what I gather it promotes blooming) and don't pot the base of the plant to deep in the media as it promotes rot; go 1 cm above from where the roots grow and it should do fine. Other than that both of these orchids grow like weeds so enjoy! :D

Left it in water for 3 weeks after washing all nursery soil off, it produced 2 new gorgeous leaves. Regarding the Algaonema, I recently purchased a valentine Chinese evergreen and I had the exact same situation, good light, perfect moisture, but it lost approximately 5 lower leaves, I was a bit worried because I had read it's supposed to be one of the easiest plants to grow but I'm happy to hear that other people have experienced the same thing and that the plant thrives afterwards!

Bring on Aglaonema Chocolate...gorgeous plant and would be so much easier to care for than another Calathea. I acquired a Cissus Discolor this summer and it thrived in an outdoor area with only a few hours of morning sun, but was it a thirsty plant. I brought it in for the fall and up potted it. Its been miserable and I will be surprised if it doesn't die. I may try making a bunch of propagations for a full basket or pot with trellis next summer. Then again my go to nursery has it literally growing up the walls. So if I fail I can try, try again. Thanks for showing us all your lovely plants Nick. Happy Growing!

My Epidendrums (reed orchids) grow outside in Florida, in a mixture of soil and bark. Unlike other orchids, I keep them moist. I got a Ficus Triangularis on the clearance rank. Half of its leaves were gone. It is on the edge of a tree line, in a pot, so it receives some sun, a little dappled at times. It loves humidity and I keep it moist, but not wet. It seems to prefer moisture, which I find with various ficus. I moved all of my calathea outside, into the ground. They hated being inside, even in a room with lots of humidity. They are thriving outside. The Mosaica is the only one that does fine for me in the house, and is growing. The discolor is another high humidity plant and it doesn't want to dry out. These have been my personal experiences.

Off I took it back outside to my plant graveyard 🤣🤣🤣 left it on my lanai . Probably a week later I walk outside and see a little new growth poking out ..... it had 3/4 about 3ft vines before. It’s not back to that yet but o have it on a hoop just like yours and it’s wrapped all the way around on each side . So there’s hope!!! Even when you think it’s dead😂

Orchids are my fav! It’s mostly what I have. I definitely prefer a mix of moss and bark. Bark doesn’t hold enough water but adds great airflow so mixing it is the key! I bought a Aglaonema Chocolate about four months ago. It’s in a north facing window which is all I have to offer this beauty. Fingers crossed. I’ve lost a few lower leaves but the plant looks healthy, so I think it was the adjustment period. So far so good. I have several Aglaonema and they seem to like it here so I’m hopeful. I’m just trying to be careful about not over watering. I wish you luck, I love them all, but this one is just a little special.

for orchids in orchid bark, soak them in water for about 24 hours about once a week. only fertilize them when they aren't blooming and soak them less often (about once every two weeks) when they're in bloom to make the blooms last longer. orchids are pretty chill though, if you forget to soak them for a week or accidentally leave them soaking for an extra 12 hours, they're fine

    • @Anna-BoBanna

FWIW, I've had a couple of orchids blooming for the last 5 months, and I've kept them on the same watering and fertilizing schedule as my orchids that are in their growth phase. One is sending up another flower spike while still in bloom. I only cut back on their fertilizing in the winter, where I continue to fertilize but at a lower dose.

Great video. I remember when the Musaica first became available at the local garden store and it was expensive! So funny (not really) to see these previously so hard to find plants showing up at home stores and even as you said, grocery stores! Out of all the fussy/difficult Calatheas, this is the one that is still going after many months.
Cissus Discolour (LOVE), I think recently you showed yours and mentioned how the first one died and that day I clipped some leaves to propagate because I too lost my first one. It looked amazing and I missed watering it by a few days and it was like, over. I tried again and kept it outside at the end of summer when it was still hot but raining a lot and it grew amazingly. Then I brought it in and it's been in my mini greenhouse with other tropicals and growing too fast, sending climbers everywhere. Now I want to move it out of the greenhouse but I'm nervous to do so...I'll keep spraying it often because it does like humidity.

Aglaonema is so easy to grow that many sellers put them in the lowest budget soil-mud with sand, garden soil with broken clay pieces, etc. and they don’t care about pot size either. If lower leaf is under muddy soil, it will rot. I’m new in houseplants hobby but Chinese ever green is such a classic plants in our hometown. It’s better repot them with better soil when we get home and let it start up from darker area. 40% -60% humidity is very decent, don’t need mist.

By far the easiest and fool proof way to water orchids:
Check roots; if green ignore, if silvery white proceed with watering
Fill orchid container with water up to the base of the plant. (Avoid getting water in the crown (base of the leaves))
Leave to soak for fifteen minutes.
    Pour off excess water.
That's it! This method fully hydrates the normally hydrophobic growing medium (moss or orchid bark) and roots without the risk of drowning. This method obviously works best if your orchid is in the standard grocery store plastic orchid pot / cachpot combo, but you could easily do it in a ventilated pot by submerging the whole pot in a large bowl of water.

And of course, this does not apply to terrestrial orchids in potting soil. But this is how I water all of my epiphytic plants growing on a plank or in orchid bark.

Your maxillaria orchid the coconut Orchid you did the the right thing by putting it in bark it should not been potted in soil.. both of your orchids just highlight. Let it the roots soak in the water for about the days you said like 10 days. in the winter you can water less and then the summer you would need to water more, so they don't dehydrate. I love me some orchids.. Your Maxillaria orchid is massive I love it..

I've wanted an aglaonema chocolate for a little while now but they are indeed harder to find and more expensive than some other kinds! One day

Hi Nick.. with that coconut orchid.. I would do 50 %bark and 50% spagnum moss .That terrcotta pot will really suck up the moisture. I wouldn’t let it dry out for 10 days. Those pseudo bulbs need to be plump. That’s your watering gage. 💕

It's just really stange how price of plants can change, I bought last year my network for about 6$ and now I see smaller ones for 15$, the same with raven, got mine on sale in big box store for 3$ and first they were for 20$.

Where do your aglaonemas sit? They really hate too bright of a place, even if it's indirect light in my experience.

The ficus trianglularis is known for dropping all of its leaves and growing them back so don’t throw it out it’s not dead😂
