  • A 3D Connexion SpaceMouse 3D mouse can provide more control over your camera while 3D modeling. While it's not something I use actively while modeling, I love using it to explore my model and find perspectives not easily obtained using a traditional mouse.
If you're interested in purchasing one, the SpaceMouse Compact is an updated version of the one shown in this video. Same functionality, sleeker design. Support my channel by using my affiliate link - amzn.to/2TTkMSI

Finally! A RUclips tutorial even I can follow! I'm a highly functional (retired lawyer) autistic who needs very clear explanations. If you leave out a single detail or step, I get lost imagining all the possible details or steps that might fit in there. I find most RUclips tutorials impossible to follow. This tutorial walked me right through all the baby-steps I need to make sense of my new 3D mouse. Thank you so-much Matt.

This is definitely the best 3d mouse review I've watched! I've only been using one for about 5 months and I really like it. I use a logitech G602 gaming mouse and have the 8 buttons on that set up for my main keyboard commands. Still a lot of switching between 3d mouse and keyboard though as I do use it as my primary camera controls while modeling. The enterprise is probably in my future.

I've used one of these for years and find it indispensable. I first tried it because I was getting such bad mouse elbow pain while modeling my right arm. This helped divide up the load and I've never gone back.
    A couple of observations, though
With large models it can get erratic and exhibits a lag when first starting to orbit around. With the same model, this doesn't occur with the typical SU orbit or pan tool. I have found that holding down the middle mouse button (orbit) seems to help with the reaction of the space mouse, making it work a little smoother. Once I do get the SM orbiting fine, it works fine until the next time I pause to model.
Another issue I've noticed, and this all seems to be in the driver software, is that occasionally it will simply stop behaving predictably. One moment it's working fine - orbiting, panning, zooming - and the next I just can't seem to get it to orbit or move the camera as I intend. Generally, I'll unplug then plug back in the SM (I use a cordless one but keep it plugged in to the USB port) and it returns to expected behavior. I do have the latest driver, so not sure how or why this occurs.
Still, a quality made product that is an integral part of my workflow.

To get past the keyboard shortcut problems with the Spacemouse Pro is using a Logitech G600 12 button programmable mouse. It actually allows you to set up your number pad with operators on the first 12, then use the pinky shift key to have 12 more shortcuts available on the same keys. Plus the mouse has 3 storage settings to allow you to program 24 shortcuts and switch between them with a different key near the scroll wheel, and they are color coded on the top and side buttons to show you which preset you're in. It works wonders in this setup.

  • @thcyprus

I got one a decade ago and I always use it when modeling. I don't mind moving my hand from the space mouse (or the regular mouse) to the keyboard for shortcuts. Personally I think this is a must have for 3D modeling. Just play with the settings to find something that feels intuitive and then use it for a week to get used to it and you will not want to go back to the old ways.

I was a Structural designer that used SolidWorks and all the designers & engineers got the enterprise ( mac daddy ) version puck. Almost nobody used theirs except me because i thought 3d spatial or whatever 3D in my head. I'd make people dizzy watching my monitor zooming in and out, flipping, rotating etc.. If you do anything 3D related you need one of these. The mac daddy one has a ton of programmable shortcut buttons so you barely need to move your hands. I worked 10/12 hour days for weeks and if not for this type of 3D puck mouse and a ergonomic keypad id have massive carpal tunnel. I doubt anyone read this far.. this mouse is worth every penny i hope you get one you will never regret it.

  • @mkteku

There is also the option of getting a gaming mouse with 12 or so programmable buttons. Having the buttons on the mouse (where we are changing the tools actually) leaves the 3D mouse just for the flyin cam.
    Good review!

Great review Matt. This is the review I wanted to see a couple years ago when I was close to purchasing one of these. Still... now having seen it, I feel I would've stuck with my decision to forego the 3D mouse. Although the Enterprise 3D mouse you last got could be a workable solution, I think the ultimate solution lies in a right hand 3D mouse that with a button click switching you between 3D and working like a trackball mouse, where you move the cursor via the puck.

I just found out about these while looking at the Logitech Cyberman 2 which was a 6DOF puck game controller that was developed in association with NASA for the robot arms on the space shuttles. The home versions came with one of the "Decent" games, a 6DOF combat sim. Could you demonstrate how well it works in 6DOF games like the Descent Series, Orverload, or Everspace? Most 6DOF games are space combat flight sims.

Great review!. I'm a SketchUp user I own a space mouse and I rearly use it when modeling. I do however when presenting the model to a client because of the smooth navigation. I've considered purchasing a SpaceMouse Enterprise, however I think it has a major flaw. If the whole purpose of the device is to avoid having to go back an forth between the navigator and a keyboard to activate commands via shortcuts, how do you input a dimension or angle of rotation or anything that requires typing numbers from the device? Or put it in another way, what is the point of having one device to trigger a command by pressing a button and having to move your hand to another device (the keyboard) to type the numbers require for the specific command. So unless I'm missing something this is not really useful.

I disregarded 3D mice for years.
I didn't even really understand what they did. Subconsciously I put them in the same category as tilted ergo-mice and trackball-mice. But then I got to try a real 3D mouse at a professional office and it was amazing. The freedom I had at my fingertips felt next-fucking-level, and it took me almost no time at all to get it (probably because I'm already very used to doing weird shit in 3D and VR), I spent a solid first half hour playing with it, much of that being at the most sensitive settings flinging the model around barely in control.
I settled on about 60-70% sensitivity and it's so damn fast and smooth now.
I can look at whatever part of the model I want with a minute little suggestion. I sometimes move it a little wrong and have to readjust, but it's not a problem. I wouldn't wanna go down in sensitivity and when I have to use a mouse for CAD on another setup, I really dislike it. Feels like such a downgrade.
I do think 3D Connexion needs competition though, I wish patents didn't last so long. Maybe granting licensing should not be voluntary, and any product utilizing a patent should pay some fixed rate around 10-5% to the patent holders, divided if among multiple patent holders.
Anyways, if anyone wants to check out the patent I think I found it here: patents.google.com/patent/USD728571S1/en
    Anticipated expiration is 2029-05-05

I think one of the best ways to use it - keyframing camera motion as if it was steadycam or drone. It looks and sounds like an extremely cool thing, but you can't get away from typing numbers or using shortcuts so yeah. Altho you probably could get used to it. It could give a totally different perspective on your model if you just rotate and move around it like that.
However blender does have a walk/fly mode for the camera so it makes this mouse almost useless imho. That mode feels literally like playing a game. WASD to move and mouse to rotate and zoom. The only downside is wheel spinning in steps meaning no smooth zooming in. But you can keyframe it on top of the "recorded" camera motion...
I'd love to check it in games tho. Just to see what kind of experience would that be :D

where are these "advanced settings" for sketchup ("helicopter mode" ect...) I don't have an "advanced" in my 3DConnexion ?

    • @Mastersketchup

In your taskbar tray, open up the 3D Connexion properties. The properties will change depending on which window you last had active. So make sure you bring SketchUp into focus, then go back to the properties panel. From there, you should see a button for Advanced Settings.

Seems like a cool concept, but at $120, it seems unnecessary, especially if you are already accustomed to the keyboard commands. If they made more of a starter one ($30-$50) i would be more likely to try it.

What about having the 3D mouse besides your 2D mouse. That way you can navigate with the 3D and model with the 2D. Try it.

    • @Mastersketchup
      @Mastersketchup  4 года назад

I have tried that. The problem is the 3D mouse can't control the cursor, therefore it can't control any of your tools. So you really need to have a hand on the 2D mouse in order to do anything in SketchUp. That's why I use the 3D mouse with the left hand, so I can still use the 2D mouse for the right hand.
