Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer vs Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive - Battle of the Screamers

- They are 2 of the most used pedals of the last 40 years, so are they the same, or different? The Ibanez Tube Screamer series is an institution in guitar playing as is the giant that is Boss. If you are looking to buy one and can't decide or you're just interested, I hope that you will find this video informative. All excerpts played using a Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb RI. I used my Deluxe Stratocaster for Rounds 1 & 2 and my Cort M600 for Round 3.
FYI, the Boss knobs on the TS9 don't affect the tone. I checked...... online!

They both suck compared to the 808! Nobody ever used the 9! From Gary Richrath to Stevie Ray used the 808! I know they and even Stevie said he used the Ts9! But that was taking out of context as he had to use it once!
They come out with the 808 about every decade! Get yourself the real deal!
@@jamesjewkiller1630 Wrong. They're practically identical. Watch the Video on Brian Wampler's channel. Great explanation.
Also Stevie Ray used the TS model that was available at the time. So he also played the TS9 and later also the TS10.
The 808 is the "original" one, but it is definitely overhyped, since the TS9 is basically the same.
@@jamesjewkiller1630 I saw a vid where Stevie was using a ts9
@@jamesjewkiller1630 SRV actually used a TS10. It was a super cheap pedal back in the day and quite a piece of crap. EVERYONE thought SRV was using the 808 or 9... When his tech finally revealed it was a TS10, the price of the pedals shot way up. It was nuts and I remember it well
Having owned several overdrive and distortion pedals and a couple modified Marshall heads prior to my first Tube Screamer, I remember the sustain and smooth gain that made the leads cut thru. That was my initial impression and it became my main pedal for many years. Over the last 25 years amps have evolved in so many ways and it is now time to factor the Tube Screamer back in.
TS9= Smooth Peanut Butter
SD1= Chunky Peanut Butter
(Both are delicious, just depends on the mood your in)
Same thing I was thinking. Have both. =)
@@triclone123 that is the perfect analogy.
What peadal would you recommend for creamy crunchy peanut butter?
Combine the 2 or is there a different pedal ?
@@keithclark486 I'd say try a few diff pedals and find what resonates with you. I myself don't split hairs over tone anymore. I just want a good tube amp tone(warmth, sustain & harmonics).
Not to preach but my advice would be to spend ur time becoming a better player & songwriter.
Too many players these days are overly concerned with sonics. Yet EVERYONE would rather hear a great song recorded with a so-so sound than hear a so-so song with a great sound. Just get a good tone and get on with being creative. Your personality will come thru in your playing no matter what. Cheers Keith!

THis format, with the retro fighting game stuff is amazing. Great Work!
I've done a few more videos like this.
The TS9 sounds a little greener to me but the SD-1 really nails that yellow tone.
Kidding aside, I own both and find that they have very different tones but I like them both equally. The TS9 is a little brighter to me and the SD-1 sounds more like an overdriven tube amp. They also both pair up nicely with a Big Muff.
haha...yeah that yellow and green sound...
Do you use them with the gain on the amped cranked or is it too much distortion?
@@mickkenny5412 I like to keep my amp pretty clean without the pedals.

which did you pick? :D
@@rubielcadena4912 the Boss is so much distorsioned for what i wanted, i finally chose TS9 for sure 😊
History lesson: the Ibanez Tube Screamer was made as a direct competitor to the Boss OD-1 and is a fairly close clone of that circuit, but with symmetrical clipping (Boss had a patent on asymmetrical clipping at the time) and a tone knob. It proved to be so popular that Boss added a tone knob to the OD-1 circuit and called it the Super Overdrive, which is the SD-1 we all know today. Both the SD-1 and the TS share a lineage of essentially being modifications to the design of the original Boss OD-1.
Personally, I’m a big fan of the SD-1, both by itself and stacking. Also, loads of pros have used and continue to use the SD-1 too (Johnny Greenwood, Mike Ness, John 5, Kirk Hammet, EVH), but none were as totally linked to the pedal as SRV was to the TS, so between the SRV connection and the cooler name, the TS will always win the popularity contests. I’m firmly in camp SD-1 though. It’s way too good of a pedal for just $50, everyone should have one.
It's interesting how different manufacturers were influenced by each other. Same thing happens in music.
@@JasonAyalaSpare The first "clones" were name brands. Slight variations but reaching for the same sound.
how is it the OD-1 does sound nothing alike the SD-1 ? OD-1 is very mid-scooped, nasal, hollow.
Cool video man and great tones. Love your choice of riffs too
Appreciated. As I'm just beginning on my Pedal Trek, what you re-emphasized for me, having literally just watched and listened to Pete Thorn prior, was just how subjective the choice really and truly is. Having spent innumerable hours, days even, on my Trek, you both have made it so much clearer to me and your impartiality was assuring. It is the difference between "Smooth or Chunky". Thanks mate.
I'm glad this was helpful, and yes it is totally subjective.

Great review. Had both. I used the SD1 for solo boosts too to throw my sound forward rather than louder. I like the TS pedals set low gain for cleaner sounds. Thanks fir rhe review. Nice details.
Thanks
Thanks for this well done review. Set at Gain 9 to 12 the SD-1 is warmer than TS-9. That's why I like it better also for stacking. For more aggressive leads the TS9 is punchier. I have both.
Appreciate this demo between these two classic effect pedals.
Thanks 👍
I got them both. They both sound great. I use the SD-1 for screaming leads and I use the TS-9 for Thick saturated rhythm playing.
Very cool demo, thanks!
What a great compairison. I am a Fender Pre bass player and have been for over 50 years. However I always liked to crank up a guitar once in a while. So I got me a Fender Tele some years ago. Looked around and I just picked up the Ibanez TS9. My other buds in bands always had the Boss SD1. I like both equaly well. I will see what I can do with the green guy. Thanks for this.
No problem. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for this.I never really gelled with a TS because I like stacking two Boss pedals or EHX drives.I'm glad I kept the TS now !
Thanks! I was in the last stages about making my mind up about an overdrive to upgrade from Berhinger's Ibanez clone. Glad you throw in the part about stacking. My overdrive is normally going through my DoD distortion, so that was the last thing I needed to know.
Glad it was helpful
Good comparison. For my pocketbook the SD-1 wins hands down because it costs half what the TS-9 costs. There just aren’t many pedals left on the market that can open up the tonal options of your rig like it can for $50 anymore.
There are some subtle differences but I’d have to get a deal on a used TS-9 to add it to my collection.
I’ve always been a TS9 guy, but the SD1 is really impressing me right now
I, know huh?
Nice one mate! Thanks.
Excellent review
Great Video. I have learned that every amp, guitar, and pedal colors and changes the sound/tone and volume. There is no greatest but I will say, once we are hooked on a sound or tone that's what we go with.
I have so many 60's tube amp's pedals that were not really needed for me that much. However; I am beginning to get into the pedal thing and now there are hundreds of makers and thousands of pedals so what a world for any guitarist to be living. It's tone heaven in the 21st Century.
Thanks for your insights. I agree there is no best, there's what you like and what you don't like. It's like food, it depends on the person's tastes.
Awesome!! I used to use Boss dirty pedals. But now I use Ibanez and Maxson something like TS9 and TS10. I wish I could have used them earlier.
I did this same comparison many years ago and I found that I liked the SD-1 best with my Les Paul humbuckers going into my Twin Reverb and I liked the TS9 best with my American Standard Strat single coils going into the same amp.
i fully concur the conclusion. SD1 is highly recommended to be used together with any high gain amp or before a dist pedal. SD 1 is meant to push a bit more sustain and smooth out the metal tone.
I love the Street Fighter II sounds
I gain stack my Nutube screamer with a Zakk Wylde overdrive MXR. I know a lot of people are not impressed with the Nutube, but I think you really have to spend some time with it , it's a great pedal!
Just wanted to say thank you for not talking about specs and transistors. I'm sold on the boss. I'm partial to boss. Thanks again!
Thanks, to be honest I don't know enough about the circuitry to make any informed comment. I just play the thing and give my opinion.
This guy is an excellent guitar player. I find both pedals sound close enough that it wouldn't make a difference which one you use.
The SD 1 is great if you have a bassy sounding amp or muddy sounding pups....because it does a nice low cut to the signal....tightens it up.
Perfect Jason....i have some Blackstar amps and they are bassy amps, some dark....and my SD1 is perfect to take more clarity to the sound....i use it for play in low volume too , bedroom volume that you need more clarity .
@@otaviofenderstrat4220 Blackstar also makes their own LT-Drive which works even better as a boost than the TS-9 and SD-1.
Great tone on all of them!! I want a ts9 though...
Stacking is what I've always used the TS for. Works great with a Turbo Rat. Never had a Boss SD-1, but I'd like to have one.

Very helpful Video for me THX.
Thank you!
Good comparison. Thanks!
I got a sd1 straight up. I love it. Nice transition from clean to dirty.
For me, the TS9 takes off a little too much top end in all of these clips. The really interesting thing is how much louder the SD-1 is. It really makes a case for using it as a boost.
I’ve actually found it to be the opposite. I have one of each pedal, both manufactured in 1994, and the TS9 is much louder than the SD-1.
@@davidonguitar cool to see both perpectives between you and the original poster
great comparison! I would prefer Boss pedal, less low booming, more authenthic and ordinary I would say. Thanks!
Fantastic comparison. Much depends on the amplification you use for the pedal. TS9 was fantastic with an old Marshall JMP 50 head w/el34s, but nowhere near as effective with Mesa 6l6 clean channel amp with lots headroom and low end. It was frustrating, until my band's other guitar player let me borrow his SD-1. Put them both on the board and the SD-1 was just better in every way with that amp. Yes, the Boss ads a more gritty character to the signal no matter where the drive is set (which is good sometimes), but it also eliminates the sometimes annoying low end when you stomp on it without having to mess with the amp's eq. That low end sounds great by itself but also can get you lost in a band mix, which is a reason why Marshall-sounding amps are so good in band settings; they cut through the mix.
This guy knows.
Let me settle this... I think that you'll all agree. They're both great pedals , sound different and everyone
should own both...
Jamie Morgan
True!
Jamie Morgan Why? They both do the exact same thing
Agreed. I own multiples of each.
I own both. I prefer the TS-9 but still break out the SD-1 from time to time.
I have both and use the TS9 to boost the SD-1. Sounds awesome
I own both. Ts9 for single coils and the Sd1 for humbuckers.
interesting, I had the exact same opinion :)
Why? I'm interested in choosing one of these for my jaguar, I play soft distortion settings (like in the middle drive position)
that has sense to me.. it is more instersting to play the ts9 with single coild because of its scooped sound and it cuts the high frecuencies of single coil pickup. And it is more playable the sd1 with humbuckers because it adds that middle and high range that humbuckers sometimes lack. It is what i believe, i have no proofs but neither doubts. xD
@@JohnyToGoodForSchool123 thankks it helped me hahah
Same thing I do
SD1 sound is mire compact, stable and easier to control. TS9 has more deepnes and wideness. Both are great.
Maybe that's the reason why Stratocaster is better with TS9 while humbucker equipped guitars are better off with SD1.
Great to see a scientific approach (the EQ analyzer at the end) given to shootouts
Thanks
I had OD-1 long ago but didn't like its sound. 20 years later or so, I begun to play the guitar again, and I've had & used several famous pedals as landgraff DOD, Zenkudo, Boiling Point, Angry Charlie, Soul Food, etc, but suddenly I wanted to try SD-1 which has almost the same tone as OD-1 I hated before.
Then I found SD-1 is the best overdrive pedal ever! My taste might have been changed in these 20 years, but it's really very excellent booster pedal. Especially I like its evenly change tone control that can be set just what I want to.
It's so cheap, but really nice & awesome one. I love it.
Every time I put it back on the board I'm always surprised how good it is.
I have a TS Mini and an SD-1 on my board. They work well together and the combined price is still less than what a boutique drive pedal will cost.
I also have a TS mini which I bought for my Affordable TS Alternatives video. I fell in love with it and sold my TS9.
I've always been partial to the SD-1, but the TS-9 works well and sounds good. They're both good, cheap, reliable, and available everywhere. I have both but mostly reach for the SD-1 because I like the way the gain sounds a little better and it really tightens up a flabby bottom end like you can get from a Big Muff or compressor, both of which I use a lot. The SD-1 is "cut in a box".
Swiss Army Knight the ts9 isnt cheap at all
Nice review, cheers!
Thanks for watching!
I have a Boss Overdrive Distortion OS2 , not sure how different is from the SD1 but it does not function with earphones from the output while the TS9 does, but a Boss GE7 EQ pedal will also function independently, or in in combination with the TS9 and earphones ? , .
I'm not sure, I've never used earphones straight out of a pedal before.
Tbh, this guy does the best pedal shootouts. Doesn’t get enough credit! Thanks for these.
Thanks 🎸
Nice vid!
I like both. Ts1 for distorted leads and tube screamer for rythem and cleaner leads. But then again i have multiple overdrive pedals on my board. I play tons of covers so i need lots of different sounds. Both great pedals in my opinion.
I will choose sd1. Because its more clarity when we combine with the other stompbox, and for other reason i can choose the tube scream when it combine with some effect stompbox.. Its up to you guys.. Anything is about the perception of ours... We can make it smooth, we can make it clarity by combine with the other stompbox.. Thanks. :)

@@JasonAyalaSpare lmao
I think the Ibanez sounds more natural, I used one for years thru a '70's 50watt Marshall, didn't change the sound of the amp, just gave it more sustain.
I've had both pedals since the 80's and I still can't choose a favorite between them.
I know what you mean, great point !!!
Because both pedal are really nice tone...
I've used both and I can say that the Tube Screamer serves me the best as a rhythm guitarist although the Boss works well in the mix for the other guitarist in the band.
I have both. The Ibenez pedal has more bite to the high end and adds more mid range which is great for metal, whereas the Boss tends to be better for rock.
awesome playing
The drive & volume circuits are functionally identical. The only difference is in the tone knob circuits. So choose obe or both based on the EQ you prefer
I never use any kind of overdrive pedal through a clean amp. I love the drive tone of my amp. So I prefer using my SD-1 as a solo boost. Much like what you say here only you used a distortion pedal for your dirty tone. I also have a TS-9 and used it as a boost for years and think it sounds great. But once I tried the SD-1, I liked it just a bit more. But I always ha e the Drive all the way down and the Level maxed. Cool comparison video!
Thanks, I also use TS style pedals as a solo boost. The are great for tightening and focusing your sound.
TS9 wins the drive round and SD1 wins the tone round. I believe every guitarist should own both of them and by the way, stacking these two (I prefer the SD1 into the TS10 actually) is drive heaven!
The boss katana came with an inbuilt Super Overdrive which I was able to access using the boss tone studio and use it as a gain booster for the crunch tone!! And it sounds incredible, but I'd love to try the same tone atleast with the TS9
I thought they were the same thing in different boxes, they're not.
The built in ODs are really good. I think it does the Blues Driver justice, as the response is unreal for build in effects. I think the Katana is good for letting you feel out the pedals and picking which ones you want to buy for your board. And it has a ton of headroom that goes great with your pedalboard, too. I have a theory that the Boss Katana 50 is so cheap because it' serves as a promotional item that encourages players to buy their effects!
Both are fantastics ♥️
I like ts9,, its like a growl in throath..
Thats rocks!!!
Joyo tube screamer better than ts9

Great video and comparison. Only suggestion, and I would say this for any "comparison type" analysis would be to use some sort of loop track and then A/B switch between the two. I think this could maybe yield a more controlled evaluation for dynamics and such. Just my opinion.
I own both, have bought and own many OD's and even built a few of my own creations. I can tell you that there are very few differences between the two pedals circuit wise but the subtle differences are pretty much what most people seem to hear in the sonic results. Mainly the clipping stage. SD-1 uses 3 diodes in an asymmetrical configuration and the TS-9 (and variants) use 2 diodes in symmetrical config. However, the TS-__ has a small value "smoothing cap" in parallel with the diodes which seems to result in chopping off some of the ultra high nasties.
quoting from Electrosmash.com analysis:
1.4.4 Low Pass Filter in the Feedback Loop.
The small 51pF C4 capacitor across the diodes works as a low pass filter, softening the corners of the clipped waveform and mellowing out the high end of the distortion.
My guess is that Boss may have chose to use 3 diode asymmetrical over the 2 diode version of Ibanez to get a similar result while avoiding patent infringement??? I dunno, just a hunch. I use them both along with the OD-3 (great underrated OD) and BD-2. Mix and match according to song / gig.
But yeah, TS-___ and SD-1 are sorta like cousins from opposing sides of the railroad tracks.
I've been thinking about getting a loop switcher.
@@JasonAyalaSpare I have one or two and always have it along with a bunch of other disaster gear in my "back-up bag". I forgot to mention in my original reply that I have 2 SD-1's and both are black label MIJ versions and I also have 3 MIJ DS-1's of the latter one is a silver screw s/n 300. I can tell you (and Brian Wampler even did a video on this I think) that even with the same pedals built with the same exact components etc., there can be variances in how they sound simply from the +/- tolerances of components. My SD-1's sound slightly different from each other as do the DS-1's but after playing any of them for a few minutes and making some tweaks I can get what I need from any of them. Additionally, I've had newer off the shelf versions of these pedals and while they too sound different, it's not enough to where I can't tweak them into the sweet spot. FWIW, I live not far from Andy Timmons and Tommy Katona. I've seen these guys many times and have talked shop with them. Andy used stock TS-9's for the longest time in front of his Laney's and Marshall's. Same with Tommy. Always has (even now) a TS-___ on his board. Ok, totally random and OT but I purchased an MXR Custom Badass Overdrive (the gold brick pedal) on a whim for next to nothing and have to say it really surprised me. I don't really use it that much but at the same time I can't bring myself to sell it. For as cheap as they are I would recommend anyone with some spare change to pick one up used and check it out. They definitely hit on something good with that one.
great video comparison .... been running that SD-1 for over a decade since I found out EVH used it... it def helps the sound a lot .... seeing that eq curve was super interesting though.... for long term use -i'm willing to bet the sd-1 is better -also cheaper.... if the tube screamer is built anything like my Ibanez AD9 -it will fall apart quickly. Out of all my pedals -the only one that fell apart was ibanez branded
Which one of these pedals would be more suited for adding mids and tightness in front of a big muff?
The SD-1 sounds way grittier with much more mid and high freq output! Our guitarist have been using the SD-1 for around 10 years now! Really very solid pedal!
I agree, works well in a mix.
In the demo, it looks like you've got the SD-1 running into the TS9 with a patch cord. If this is the case, keep in mind that the SD-1 has a buffered circuit (not true bypass), which affects the signal level (a bit hotter) & tone feeding into the TS9. A/B would've been the best way to compare these two pedals, side-by-side.. Just my personal opinion...
I seriously doubt it makes a difference enough for us to tell
@@alexmurphy5289 It would make a difference if there wasn't true bypass. That's the whole reason true bypass exists.

The Boss SD-1 is my all-time favourite pedal (stock) even though mine is Keeley modded. I recently bought an Ibanez TS Mini and I love that too. Never quite loved the TS9 as much...
I bought a TS mini for my Affordable Tube Sreamers video and loved it. I sold my TS9.
I'd have to say that the SD-1 is my fave too, been using it for over 2 decades! I found that I really liked the touch sensitivity on it more than the TS-9. Lots of sustain as well. So versatile and it came in handy for dialing up distorted tones in small clubs where the owners were constantly bitching about volume. They do sound pretty close in this vid but I've never owned an Ibanez, played the Boss and never looked back!
I have both, I think that each have their own use, TS-9 is smother, conmfy gain and it feel warm. SD-1 have more voume, more power, feel almost like a distortion. I think that TS-9 is ideal for solos with feeling or give some smoth sensation to rhytmics, SD-1 is more for fast and agresive rhytmics or for powerfull and fast solos. Nice vídeo :)
I absolutely agree.
Is it good to have both? I switch between blues and heavy metal a lot. I have TS9 clone.
@@ermonski , I have both for the exact same reason. I switch between blues/classic rock and metal alot. Having both enables me to effectively toggle between those three styles. The SD-1 filters out muddy lows and boosts high mids, narrowing your sound a bit. This makes for a very tight fast tracking tone that's not wooly sounding, especially when cranking up the tone to around three o'clock position. Tube screamer style almost feels like it's opposite. Boosting low mids and sizzle, compressing alot more. Great for blues especially on single coil or P90. Another good way to use both is to set SD-1 for tight clear rhythm tone, then layering the TS for a smooth saturated lead tone. Much like the video.
Both sound excellent...picked the most budget friendly SD-1 as the one for me...
I own quite a few od/ds pedals, some are copies but don't have the ts9. My favourites are EHX od glove, Boss Blues driver and mooer turbo.
Love the 80's style vid. I'm just a novice guitar player, and not sure if I have got this right, but holy cow, so that's ironic then that the Ibanez Tube Screamer is better on it's own (i.e on a clean amp), as opposed to being used with gain on the amp (which is actually the correct way to use an overdrive). So, dare I say the Boss SD-1 got it more right then, as this pedal works better with gain on the amp! Great video, thanks.
Thanks, thinking on buying an old sd-1
You can get them pretty cheap.
I found using both together works really well👍
In which order?
i used the Tube screamer pushing a OCD OR BBP im going to try the SD1 see how its feels thks.
i have the opposite setup as you. I have an OCD pushing a TS9.
No vs, love them both!
I've been happy with the Boss a long long time I got mine for 20 bucks..Money is good to stack as well
I have gone through so many OD pedals in the past 20 years. Something new comes out, I have to try it. But, in the end... the SD-1 comes out as the most versatile and best sounding of them all.
Hello.great video.👏👏👏
Thank you
The real test is to compare the 2 pedals on different amps, with different level of gain. I have both of them, and I have played them for years in front of Vox, Marshall, Orange, Fender. Few examples? Try the SD1 on a JCM 800 with an humbucker and you will find "the hard rock sound". Ts9 on the Fender with a Strat as well, is really "recognizable".
Bon vidéo man
Thanks
I had the tube screamer and my friend had the sd-1 and we would switch all the time. Even tho in this video they sound probably much identical, they feel completely different. The tube screamer did feel chewy and the sd-1 did feel nice, it feels more sloppy and growly in a good way. I now have the sudden urge to get an sd-1
As for someone who own both who use it mostly for heavy gain amp.
Both is useful and create a different type of tone depends on your music.
Both are awesome
Which one if you have a DSL40CR and want the 80s hair metal sound?
SD1 as soon as you modify it with an easy operation, you can get a very nice flexible overdrive, getting more bass and loosing the hiss. without the mod it's still nice and cheap but with flat expression. TS9 is more compressed and mid centered, and then the best use is as a mid boost to add gorgeous richness on your overdriven tone. I use SD1 by itself to get a standard versatile strong creamy OD sound on fenders, and I use the TS to add crisp and juice to solos , nice on any guitar, best on LP!
what a mod?
Can't beat a simple setup, overdrive and a valve amp. I use the Mxr wylde overdrive (old one) and it's phenomenal.
That's based on the SD-1 isn't it?
Both are great
Is it bad that I don't like the Tubescreamer because of its super dim LED? Used one as a solo boost at a jam recently and was struggling all night to see if it was on or off on a dimly lit stage. My $30 Joyo TS clone doesn't have this issue and I walked away disappointed with the original 😅
I was surprised at how dim the LED was too. At first I thought it was broken.
I need to know which will make my 80s metal tone sound mote vocal and have a cocked wah almost vibe , thinking akira takasaki of loudnes, icons first album, michael schenker, or ronnie le tekro or tnt
Nice comparison. Have a TS9,now need a SD1 😀
Jason I need sustain like Gary Moore what can I get. PRS custom, 2101 dig. Not cutting it. Fender bronko like sound to small. Need something for recording board thanks God bless

When I need more sustain from a low gain pedal, I put a compressor in front of it.

Hi.what pedal is better for ramones sound: the Ibanez or the boss ? Thanks.
Probably the Boss, because it has more gain and is a bit edgier.
Can someone make a video on how to get full amp tones using guitar pedals into a bedroom level amp, and please use a DB meter!
