I'm currently reading and almost finished "a quantum life" by hakeem. What an amazing book. I can relate on many different levels except a few, and It is now a dream of mine to one day have a conversation with him. He is truly so inspiring to me ❤ I too also read most of it yesterday (on and off yesterday with a busy toddler, I feel faster than any book I have read because I was just soooo into it). I have about 100 pages left and I know it'll only take about 45 minutes to finish it and I can't wait to do that today when I have some free time. I don't wanna spoil it, but his story is quite unlikely. The way he acquired his knowledge is extremely unlikely for most children who are in poverty and experience multiple high toxic stress throughout their childhood. I know a few people who have similar stories who could've gone one way but instead went another and vice versa
Chuck is one of the most intelligent comedians you'll ever meet. He always knows what he's talking about, even if the others don't think so. A self-deprecating genius at comedy.
Listen. This book is definitely epic. Like Chuck, I couldn’t put it down. Read the whole book & epilogue in two sittings. Was happy to see Star Talk was featuring it too! For those of us who have lives that seem like perpetual wrestling matches, this book is so refreshing and transformative. You never want others to know your traumas, but when you find out others share your diary, you are strangely happy to not be alone. Dr. Oluseyi gives me hope.
That segment with the 4 big bangs was the most interesting part of this interview, and a great look into the deeper level theoretical QFT, and Niel just laughed it off. Very disappointed that they didn't let him talk more about something that he obviously loves so much. Where can I find more of him talking about these Inflaton fields and multiple big bangs?
These two astrophysicists just get one thing to my mind: how is it humanly possible to be so courageous?! I just love how their personalities differ: Hakeem will talk about anything you want any way he wants and will readily embrace and portray any aspect of life, society and science all at once, while Neil is certainly laid-back and enthusiastic, but he's always concerned with how he delivers his expositions to help people filter out their prejudices while pondering the subjects he opens. I wish I could truely understand the meaning of the title of Hakeem's book; I get that state superposition sounds really cool; throw Heisenberg and probability theory into that and it probably becomes a mind feast!
I really enjoy this story. A story often untold. Smart people are often buried simply because they don’t know as teens anything about college, prestigious schools, career tracking, and little to no guidance.

But the only way I actually got through high school was actually paying attention in class. I hated doing the assignments and homework and basically didn't do any of it but I paid attention in class and did well on the tests and got through that way. I'd do it differently now lol.

Having grown up in the inner city of Detroit during theb1960s and 1970s, I enjoyed Hakeem's story immensely. I particularly liked the part about obsessive behaviors and patterns. I too have several of those little obsessions. One in particular happened during this show. Yesterday, I decided to listen to one of my favorite songs from Jane's Addiction: Summertime Rolls. At some point the lyrics mention "whose fingernails are made of mother's pearl". Curious, I looked up the definition of Mother's Pearl: the shiny iridescent part of the inside of a clam shell. Then, this morning, I was reading about the new supercomputer at NERSC (my career was in supercomputing at various DoE labs working with, among other things, computational astrophysics). The new computer's name at NERSC is Perlmutter. Curious about the meaning of that name, I looked it up and it is the German word for Mother's Pearl. However, the machine was actually named in honor of Saul Perlmutter because he did much of the work that led to his Nobel Prize at NERSC. And now, I listened to your show and Hakeem mentions Saul Perlmutter! I have lived 63 years without ever hearing about Mother's Pearl or Perlmutter [in either sense] and now I come across it three times in three completely different contexts in two days. I don't hold any significance to that sort of coincidence but I do find it amusingly weird. Have a great summer all y'alls!

Sorry guys I'm halfway through the episode and he attends tougoloo college which is in Jackon MS which also happens to have the highest crime rate and poverty rate in the US. I had only watched a 4th of the episode when I paused it to let you guys and everyone here who has and whom will watch this how remarkable his back story thus far and I'm only half way through seeing this for the first time. Keep in mind it's June 2021 as I sit here writing this in Jackson MS. I'm extremely well educated now and I lead my profession being amongst the top to end up being in the one percentile within the US as a Certidied Residential Real Estate Appraiser which had become a huge part of my identity that I still today love and have a passion for it that lead to me becoming multi state certified as a Certified Residential Appraiser and its hard enough and also state mandated that you are required to know the market intimately and 100 percent competently to practice and certify to an appraised value of a home or land tract just within your target marketed area of said state that you held a certification within and I ended up becoming certified in Birmingham AL and went there and within 6 to 7 months I studied and researched that market day and night and became just as fully competent there in 6 months time that I moved my practice there but knew both Alabama and Mississippi equally and as if I had appraised in Alabama and had lived there my entire life that would have or should have taken at least two years to stand before the board and certify to your competency level or degree and then convince the board consisting of 7 members or rather back up every word you spoke and it nearly killed me but I ate it, I rarely slept and I breathed the market and not just market value but the market as a whole and while I've never in my life taken a economics class neither in high school or college, I taught it and real estate courses at Hinds Community College at night for 7 years on the side and was allowed due to my professional achievements and accomplishments at such a young age within my profession and I had a blast. I went on to bring on and train from no experience at all all the way up to have become my level state sertifed Residential appraisers which if every FDIC mortgage loan whether you refinance or are buying requires a state certified appraisal be done with a exact value, market value if you will performed and only signed by a state certified Appraiser that federal lending institutions used to loan up to or no more than the appraised value said there in the appraisal report. I love his backstory thus far because I say again. Neither of you have any idea what it's like not to visit this state but to live it and and endure it day in day out. It's nothing short of a horrible life
Maybe it's my unfamiliarity with Physics resumes and the community, but it really surprises me that NDT and this guy didn't cross paths more meaningfully before given his amazing background.

In regards to the interview, I think Neil's questions would have been better and more insightful if he had read the book before hand. Other than that, loved the episode.
Great interview 👏👏👏👏👏
This is a excellent show. And Hakeem is a great.
Great interview! I'm going to buy the autobiography and recommend it; great story!
Chuck is the salt that brings the dish together
I love these guys; Hakeem Oluseyi and Neil Tyson
It's nothing short of a horrible life
This might be the best Vid ever!
Maybe it's my unfamiliarity with Physics resumes and the community, but it really surprises me that NDT and this guy didn't cross paths more meaningfully before given his amazing background.
Such an inspiring man! Great episode!!
Hakeem is awesome, I’ve seen him several times on the net, always wanted to see him discuss science with NDT. 😁🥰👍🏽🤘🏽💪🏽🍻
I love this program.
Hakeem, I consider your "mind games" to be a blessing. I play similar games with myself. Keeps things interesting!
