I know that it's bit late, but might as well post a bit of history: The term Jääkäri comes from the German term Jaeger/Jäger for light infantry during the First World War, where Finnish volunteers fought for Germany in the 27th Jäger Battalion, gaining training and experience. Germany hoped in 1915 that the Jääkäris would in future weaken Imperial Russia, while the volunteers were motivated by attempted Russification and nationalist feelings of the late 19th and early 20th century. The Jääkäriliike (Jaeger Movement) then fought during the Finnish Civil War, forming the trained core of the White Finns against the Reds during the Civil War of 1918, and by the Winter War of 1939-1940, many jääkäris were in command positions, including large number of the Generals. These days, the most basic rank of Finnish infantry man is Jääkäri, though this is a more recent change in the 2000's. Finnish paratroopers for example are called Laskuvarjojääkäri, literally Parachute Jaeger.

this knife is a users knife no show no gimmicks just hard camp or bushcraft work!! they dont issue it for nothing!! to finnish reserves or army the skandi mil gets to often choose what they carry as everyone in scandinavia grows up with a knife much like you guys carry guns! so they leave it often to personal preference when you out in the field and if it dont work for you its your own lookout or fault yer neck on the line the mil doesnt dictate to you! what you must carry regards knives like ours does! they are liked by those that hard use them!
I did buy this knife but I got the 140 only because they were sold out of the 110's. I just finished about 3 hours of carving with it, and the scandi grind doesn't mess around. Very sharp and looks like a perfect grind. This is a carving beast!

It came out WAAAY before the Garberg and is basically the smaller bro/companion to the big Skrama bush blade. On a 100mm blade I think something like the Marttiini Lumberjack is nice.. Traditional wood rat tang handle, traditional molded leather sheath, and a really great carbon steel scandi blade for fine detail work. I opted for the 140mm version of the Jaakarripuukko.. My reasoning was the heavy duty 4mm spine matched up better with the longer blade and is the perfect survival knife. And the longer blade allows it to make easy work of battening larger dia logs, food prep, and even light chopping. Also, part of "Surviving" is having a weapon, and the 140mm strikes a an almost perfect balance between tool and weapon. If was going off to war, or off into the wilderness, its the one knife i would take without any reservation. It's not the perfect tool for any particular job, however its better at doing everything than any other knife i have that's task specific.
You make fantastic points with your reasoning on choosing the 140. I tend to agree with you. I don’t take the 110 much, despite still loving the blade. The 140 is just a bit more capable and a better fit for a knife this robust.
@@MichaelTravis12c27 They now have version with 85mm blade as well. Personally I think 110mm blade has better balance as something that is tool for more precise woodcraft and chopping firewood as well. 140mm is better for working firewood and such, it starting to get into territory where it isn't good anything requiring more fine control of the blade.

Sadly in most companies there is the marketing wank to pay for and the willingness of people to pay way more than they should. I guess if they pay more they think they are getting more for their money. People can get a lot of work done with cheap knives but they don't have high priced sex appeal. I doubt anyone stuck in the woods in a bad situation would turn down a knife from M-tek. You can beat them forever and they don't break. Just an example. Fantastic review. I am awaiting delivery on my Terava 140. Cannot wait to get in my hands 😫

My 110 came yesterday and I really like the knife. I wasn't able to buy it with the leather sheath and the plastic sleeve does not secure to the knife. They secure it during shipping with a paper band and a really nice bit of packaging. I also bought the Skrama which arrived in the same box and that knife's plastic sleeve does attach to the knife. Love the Skrama too... WOW, what an awesome tool! I'll be buying several more of these for friends. I'm going to see if I can buy the leather sheath from Varusteleka for the 110 and I'll probably go with the same sheath you chose for the Skrama. For the $9.99 shipping they were trackable and well (though remarkably minimally) packaged. Thank you for the recommendations on them both.
+J Guengerich the leather sheath for the 110 is worth getting. It's very well done. I've been waiting forever to get the brown leather sheath for the Skrama. The Skrama has become my go-to large blade. I love that thing.
Varusteleka's site says that the spine is beveled that way intentionally in order to expose the harder inner area. Great review. I've got the 110 on the way, will be getting the Skrama 240 as well... And probably the 200, as well as the jpuukko 140.
I like the thinner blade of the Garberg over the Jaakarripuukko. The SS Garberg has excellent edge retention. I'm wanting the JP too. A guy can't have too many bushcraft knives! Thanks!

I absolutely love this knife !! Whatever you do...get the leather sheath, together they make a great outdoor package. My knife took about six weeks to arrive. It was purchased in the middle of December 2016....got to the US in two days and stayed in customs for the six weeks. Perhaps it was just bad luck. It was worth the wait. First thing I thought was I should have bought at least three.

I got the 140 carbon version - And I must say I love this knife ! - I don't mind spending 200$ on a knife or any piece of kit if i have my eyes on something specific, so I didn't buy this knife as a budget knife. I had seen some great reviews of the knife and I loved the overall design of it. For the last couple of years I've mainly used my mora knives - I'm still a big fan of mora, and will most likely still bring a stainless companion for food prep - But as for a primary camp knife, my search is over... Mine holds an edge very well, and even though I baton, split, de-bark and do light chopping, I have yet to sharpen it on a stone. I give it a quick touch up with a leather strop and some polishing cream after every trip, and its still razor sharp. I'm generally not a big fan of those kinda rubber materials the handle is made of, but again the handle fits me so well and its so comfortable that I almost forget about my love of linen micarta and wood handles :D On the sheath part I also think you get a lot for the money - Yeah there are better looking and higher quality custom sheaths out there - But often they will set you back 100$+... The only thing I didn't really like was the belt loop, the material is a bit thin for my taste, so I cut that off and had a "custom" one made. Varusteleka also offers great customer service. the first knife I received was pretty poorly ground - I emailed them a couple of pictures, and they totally agreed that I't did not live up to the standards - a week later I received a new knife plus leather sheath free of charge (they could just have sent me the knife with plastic liner), they didn't even want me to return the first one :-) Thanks for the great review Blue Mountain ;-)

I find that preference wise, for myself personally, that if the blade is too thick for me I won't carry it and it is difficult to do finer tasks. I don't really go into the woods to chop and baton. If I ever need to do that I usually go for an axe and saw. I like my belt knives to be light. That's just me though, everyone else may be looking for this knife. Your video really help in the decision making process when purchasing the ideal blade.

Yeah I have to agree. I picked up a set of 110,140, and a Skrama about 4 months ago and really liked them right out of the box. Then in December I decided to get another set while they became available again (and with a discount code). Awesome. And the merino wool stuff is awesome also.
Thanks for this very helpful review. I have the 140cm. bladed version, which, if you are ordering from Scotland, where I live, is exactly the same price as the 110cm. I am very pleased with it, and would certainly recommend these knives, and the Company.
Do you find any problems with the rubber handle? It seems with the thin strait tang it would eventually come loose and pull off out the back. Also with heavy use and twisting i think i would accelerate this problem. Do you feel the handle twist or pull? I think if that was solved with a more grip contoured and spiked tang it would make it unrippable.
Say Heah, I really like your intro logo. Infact I had my 3V Skookum Bush Tool brought up for me by my friend. She also brought another one of my knives to use for herself, She was our Master Cook. She used my Fox Pro Hunter which is actually similar to the knives you compared. My 3V Skookum Bush Tool is worth its weight in gold. It's prolly my all time Fav. Whittler and then some. I also neck carry it, because its a solodly robust made knife. And you have it on your intro logo.But my Fox Pro Hunter in the hands of a excellent cook. She made manic using it on food prep. The trip was supposed to be our Memorial Weekend Bush Craft Trip. I guess it was with what everybody brought with themselves. But more eating was done than anything else. But the Fox Pro Hunter defenetly should of been in this video. It's a N690Co. Bohler Stainless and its a good one.,,.
Wow. This knife is thicker than even the Mora heavy duty knife (3.2mm). Full tang and the loop on the end will be nice for paracord. I was originally planning on a $20 heavy duty Mora but now I'm going to try this 110 out instead! :) The leather sheath is optional, so one can still go with the cheaper price of around $30!
How does handles compare to That mora bushcraft? I have bushcraft Force and frickin love that handle, something that rest of the mora line lacks. is it similar to bushcraft series?
I received a 140 and have to say it is a beast! The only problem I got is that the bevel is not even. The first inch of the blade tip was very dull. The blade edge is a slight hollow grind and not a true Scandi grind. It also has a secondary edge bevel.

A very good review of a great knife. I have the Terava Skrama that I reviewed some time ago; equally impressive (and I have used it hard). The choice of the 80CRV2 steel is very good in these days of 'super steels'.
Have you had any issues with chipping or rolling of the edge? Looking for a good utility knife that I can use as a camp knife, but also take hunting to process deer. This knife seems to have nearly everything I am looking for, but worried about that thin edge against bone.

Wow i got this knife (long version) a few months ago i love mine, what a blade took to the woods & it did great. The sheath alone was worth the 64.00 bucks . Leather sheath is perfect.
Very happy to see this video. Mora is out of line with the cost on the Garberg. I would never buy one based on that alone. There are better options in that price range. Here in Canada the Garberg is well over the $100 mark after shipping and taxes. Great review. Thank you for your time.
Great video review Mike! I think that you are right about this being a Mora Garberg killer! I initially looked at the Garberg, and was excited due to the full tang construction, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment, due to the cost. I really have never seen the need to purchase a knife that costs more than $75.00. There are so many great knives out there that will perform as well as the $100+, or do I dare say the $200+ priced knives, that are now being pushed by the Reality show, and RUclips newbie celebrity knife designers, and the RUclips bushcraft gear promoters. Anyway, I noticed that the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 Carbon Steel was in stock, and the 140 Carbon Steel was out of stock, but did notice that Varustaleka also makes a stainless 110 version. One knife that you may also want to look at is the Terava Skrama, as I have seen it reviewed, and it looks like a great large knife option, for again under $75.00. I already own a Mora Buscraft Black, HD Companion, and the Light My Fire knives, so the Varustaleka knives are going on my wish list. Thanks!
I am a sucker for a good knife, whether it be a $200 custom or a quality budget blade. Honestly, I would never have any need for much more than this knife as a bushcraft blade. I'm sure that won't stop me from trying new ones though. LOL I purchased a Skrama along with this one and will be doing a video on it shortly. I think I'm even more impressed with that blade than I am with this one!

Nice review! Terävä Jääkäripukko means: Sharp soldiers Knife, jääkäri being a german title Jaeger, pronounced in finnish. Maybe the company is has been able to produce these knifes for lesser costa s they have a main guaranteed customer, namely the finnish armed forces, so with the guaranteed bulk the production costs will come down. Have not handled this knife myself, but thanks to your review, I'll probably get one for myself. One to last me a lifetime. Also Puukko, is a finnish word for a traditional style of knife where the tang will travel the entire lenght of the wood or horn handle and be secured in the pommel by a rivet or a bend in the tang hammered on by the handle maker.
and the Sissipuukko is hard to get and more expensive...The hole in the handle can be fitted with a colorful string for to find it if dropped in deep snow or greenery, or a black one for that matter but then it will not be easy to find in the dark. It is Finnish hence good quality, I am Swedish myself and own two Finnish knives and some Moras too of course of which my favorite is the smallest in the Classic line...I would really like to have a Puukko with Birch bark handle though, but i suppose I will have to get a blank and make the handle myself.
Actually Terävä is the brand of the knife, it is the name that's been given by Varusteleka to it's own line of knives. As far as I know, the knife isn't being produced for the Finnish military, but the simplicity of the design allows for a reasonable pricing.

These will be of high carbon steel, so the blade is protected from rust by leaving the larger surface unpolished. There is also knifes with damascus folds, but for a short blade that is a bit of overkill. Send me a message if you need help to find a resonably priced craft puukko.
I have one with just the plastic sleeve. The sleeve does NOT secure itself around the knife AT ALL! Also, according to the website, the secondary bevel is on purpose
First time I have heard about this knife. Looks like a full tang Mora Bushcraft Black. Although I suspect it isn't technically a full tang. Sure, it is a full length tang but most likely no wider than a Mora's tang. Not the full width of the handle in other words. It is still probably stronger in the end. Great price/deal if the steel is as good as a Mora Bushcraft Black or Garberg. You didn't mention whether it was a carbon steel blade or stainless. (maybe I missed it) I presume by looking at the blade that it is carbon steel. My preferred choice anyway. I'm going to check out the link that you provided but I am from Canada & with the exchange rate & the import tariffs & duty my country imposes, this knife will probably hit $100 with the sheath by the time it gets to my door. (the basic Mora Bushcraft Black without the ferro rod & sharpener is about $90 up here) Thanks for the upload & info on this knife. Cheers. *Edit: Just looked at the web site. Yep, this knife delivered to Canada is $86. By the time I pay duty, it will be $100. It may still be a good deal. I will give it some thought. Hey Mike, I just got my knife 20 minutes ago. Right out of the box, sharp as a razor, edge and spine. This is one sweet knife.
I’ve been using my Teravva for 6 months daily and relentlessly. It’s one of the toughest knives I’ve ever had. Highly recommend them.

Also, part of "Surviving" is having a weapon, and the 140mm strikes a an almost perfect balance between tool and weapon. If was going off to war, or off into the wilderness, its the one knife i would take without any reservation. It's not the perfect tool for any particular job, however its better at doing everything than any other knife i have that's task specific.
You make fantastic points with your reasoning on choosing the 140. I tend to agree with you. I don’t take the 110 much, despite still loving the blade. The 140 is just a bit more capable and a better fit for a knife this robust.
@@MichaelTravis12c27 They now have version with 85mm blade as well. Personally I think 110mm blade has better balance as something that is tool for more precise woodcraft and chopping firewood as well. 140mm is better for working firewood and such, it starting to get into territory where it isn't good anything requiring more fine control of the blade.

Sadly in most companies there is the marketing wank to pay for and the willingness of people to pay way more than they should. I guess if they pay more they think they are getting more for their money. People can get a lot of work done with cheap knives but they don't have high priced sex appeal. I doubt anyone stuck in the woods in a bad situation would turn down a knife from M-tek. You can beat them forever and they don't break. Just an example. Fantastic review. I am awaiting delivery on my Terava 140. Cannot wait to get in my hands 😫

My 110 came yesterday and I really like the knife. I wasn't able to buy it with the leather sheath and the plastic sleeve does not secure to the knife. They secure it during shipping with a paper band and a really nice bit of packaging. I also bought the Skrama which arrived in the same box and that knife's plastic sleeve does attach to the knife. Love the Skrama too... WOW, what an awesome tool!
I'll be buying several more of these for friends. I'm going to see if I can buy the leather sheath from Varusteleka for the 110 and I'll probably go with the same sheath you chose for the Skrama.
For the $9.99 shipping they were trackable and well (though remarkably minimally) packaged.

+J Guengerich the leather sheath for the 110 is worth getting. It's very well done. I've been waiting forever to get the brown leather sheath for the Skrama. The Skrama has become my go-to large blade. I love that thing.
Its amazing how quickly they sell out. I hesitated one day too long to order the knives with the sheaths.
Varusteleka's site says that the spine is beveled that way intentionally in order to expose the harder inner area.

I like the thinner blade of the Garberg over the Jaakarripuukko. The SS Garberg has excellent edge retention. I'm wanting the JP too. A guy can't have too many bushcraft knives! Thanks!

I absolutely love this knife !! Whatever you do...get the leather sheath, together they make a great outdoor package. My knife took about six weeks to arrive. It was purchased in the middle of December 2016....got to the US in two days and stayed in customs for the six weeks. Perhaps it was just bad luck. It was worth the wait. First thing I thought was I should have bought at least three.

I got the 140 carbon version - And I must say I love this knife ! - I don't mind spending 200$ on a knife or any piece of kit if i have my eyes on something specific, so I didn't buy this knife as a budget knife. I had seen some great reviews of the knife and I loved the overall design of it. For the last couple of years I've mainly used my mora knives - I'm still a big fan of mora, and will most likely still bring a stainless companion for food prep - But as for a primary camp knife, my search is over...
Mine holds an edge very well, and even though I baton, split, de-bark and do light chopping, I have yet to sharpen it on a stone. I give it a quick touch up with a leather strop and some polishing cream after every trip, and its still razor sharp.
I'm generally not a big fan of those kinda rubber materials the handle is made of, but again the handle fits me so well and its so comfortable that I almost forget about my love of linen micarta and wood handles :D
On the sheath part I also think you get a lot for the money - Yeah there are better looking and higher quality custom sheaths out there - But often they will set you back 100$+... The only thing I didn't really like was the belt loop, the material is a bit thin for my taste, so I cut that off and had a "custom" one made.
Varusteleka also offers great customer service. the first knife I received was pretty poorly ground - I emailed them a couple of pictures, and they totally agreed that I't did not live up to the standards - a week later I received a new knife plus leather sheath free of charge (they could just have sent me the knife with plastic liner), they didn't even want me to return the first one :-)

I find that preference wise, for myself personally, that if the blade is too thick for me I won't carry it and it is difficult to do finer tasks. I don't really go into the woods to chop and baton. If I ever need to do that I usually go for an axe and saw. I like my belt knives to be light. That's just me though, everyone else may be looking for this knife. Your video really help in the decision making process when purchasing the ideal blade.

Yeah I have to agree. I picked up a set of 110,140, and a Skrama about 4 months ago and really liked them right out of the box. Then in December I decided to get another set while they became available again (and with a discount code). Awesome. And the merino wool stuff is awesome also.

Do you find any problems with the rubber handle? It seems with the thin strait tang it would eventually come loose and pull off out the back. Also with heavy use and twisting i think i would accelerate this problem. Do you feel the handle twist or pull? I think if that was solved with a more grip contoured and spiked tang it would make it unrippable.

Say Heah, I really like your intro logo. Infact I had my 3V Skookum Bush Tool brought up for me by my friend. She also brought another one of my knives to use for herself, She was our Master Cook. She used my Fox Pro Hunter which is actually similar to the knives you compared. My 3V Skookum Bush Tool is worth its weight in gold. It's prolly my all time Fav. Whittler and then some. I also neck carry it, because its a solodly robust made knife. And you have it on your intro logo.But my Fox Pro Hunter in the hands of a excellent cook. She made manic using it on food prep. The trip was supposed to be our Memorial Weekend Bush Craft Trip. I guess it was with what everybody brought with themselves. But more eating was done than anything else. But the Fox Pro Hunter defenetly should of been in this video. It's a N690Co. Bohler Stainless and its a good one.,,.

Wow. This knife is thicker than even the Mora heavy duty knife (3.2mm). Full tang and the loop on the end will be nice for paracord. I was originally planning on a $20 heavy duty Mora but now I'm going to try this 110 out instead! :)
The leather sheath is optional, so one can still go with the cheaper price of around $30!

Liberty and Justice remember if you elect no leather sheath you get the plastic insert. It is not a working sheath. You will need to build buy one.

Has the sheath retention relaxed at all? The sheath is a great deal but

I received a 140 and have to say it is a beast! The only problem I got is that the bevel is not even. The first inch of the blade tip was very dull. The blade edge is a slight hollow grind and not a true Scandi grind. It also has a secondary edge bevel.

A very good review of a great knife. I have the Terava Skrama that I reviewed some time ago; equally impressive (and I have used it hard). The choice of the 80CRV2 steel is very good in these days of 'super steels'.

Have you had any issues with chipping or rolling of the edge? Looking for a good utility knife that I can use as a camp knife, but also take hunting to process deer. This knife seems to have nearly everything I am looking for, but worried about that thin edge against bone.
No issues so far.

I think that you are right about this being a Mora Garberg killer!
I initially looked at the Garberg, and was excited due to the full tang construction, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment, due to the cost.
I really have never seen the need to purchase a knife that costs more than $75.00.
There are so many great knives out there that will perform as well as the $100+, or do I dare say the $200+ priced knives, that are now being pushed by the Reality show, and RUclips newbie celebrity knife designers, and the RUclips bushcraft gear promoters.
Anyway, I noticed that the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 Carbon Steel was in stock, and the 140 Carbon Steel was out of stock, but did notice that Varustaleka also makes a stainless 110 version.
One knife that you may also want to look at is the Terava Skrama, as I have seen it reviewed, and it looks like a great large knife option, for again under $75.00.
I already own a Mora Buscraft Black, HD Companion, and the Light My Fire knives, so the Varustaleka knives are going on my wish list.

I am a sucker for a good knife, whether it be a $200 custom or a quality budget blade. Honestly, I would never have any need for much more than this knife as a bushcraft blade. I'm sure that won't stop me from trying new ones though. LOL I purchased a Skrama along with this one and will be doing a video on it shortly. I think I'm even more impressed with that blade than I am with this one!
Wish they had a lefty option for that leather sheath, it looks great. I guess I'll have to get Gary/C2GFab to make me a kydex sheath if I end up getting one of these beauties in the future ;). Lol great video as always, Mike!

Nice review! Terävä Jääkäripukko means: Sharp soldiers Knife, jääkäri being a german title Jaeger, pronounced in finnish. Maybe the company is has been able to produce these knifes for lesser costa s they have a main guaranteed customer, namely the finnish armed forces, so with the guaranteed bulk the production costs will come down.
Have not handled this knife myself, but thanks to your review, I'll probably get one for myself. One to last me a lifetime. Also Puukko, is a finnish word for a traditional style of knife where the tang will travel the entire lenght of the wood or horn handle and be secured in the pommel by a rivet or a bend in the tang hammered on by the handle maker.
and the Sissipuukko is hard to get and more expensive...The hole in the handle can be fitted with a colorful string for to find it if dropped in deep snow or greenery, or a black one for that matter but then it will not be easy to find in the dark. It is Finnish hence good quality, I am Swedish myself and own two Finnish knives and some Moras too of course of which my favorite is the smallest in the Classic line...I would really like to have a Puukko with Birch bark handle though, but i suppose I will have to get a blank and make the handle myself.
Actually Terävä is the brand of the knife, it is the name that's been given by Varusteleka to it's own line of knives. As far as I know, the knife isn't being produced for the Finnish military, but the simplicity of the design allows for a reasonable pricing.

I also know a few semi proffessional knife makers whom might sell their products. These will be of high carbon steel, so the blade is protected from rust by leaving the larger surface unpolished. There is also knifes with damascus folds, but for a short blade that is a bit of overkill. Send me a message if you need help to find a resonably priced craft puukko.
I have one with just the plastic sleeve. The sleeve does NOT secure itself around the knife AT ALL! Also, according to the website, the secondary bevel is on purpose

First time I have heard about this knife. Looks like a full tang Mora Bushcraft Black. Although I suspect it isn't technically a full tang. Sure, it is a full length tang but most likely no wider than a Mora's tang. Not the full width of the handle in other words. It is still probably stronger in the end.
Great price/deal if the steel is as good as a Mora Bushcraft Black or Garberg. You didn't mention whether it was a carbon steel blade or stainless. (maybe I missed it) I presume by looking at the blade that it is carbon steel. My preferred choice anyway.
I'm going to check out the link that you provided but I am from Canada & with the exchange rate & the import tariffs & duty my country imposes, this knife will probably hit $100 with the sheath by the time it gets to my door. (the basic Mora Bushcraft Black without the ferro rod & sharpener is about $90 up here)
