Great video. It would also be interesting to explore Apollonian and Dionysian forces as concomitant phenomena in Nietzsche's philosophy:
'But what if pleasure and pain should be so closely connected that he who wants the greatest possible amount of the one must also have the greatest possible amount of the other,-that he who wants to experience the "heavenly high jubilation" must also be ready to be "sorrowful unto death"?' Fantastically well done! The work of Iain McGilchrist comes to mind.
I personally find it funny how we are so often shocked that the Ancient Greeks had such a grasp on psychology. I found a very similar conclusion in my study of Apollo and Daphne, where the Apollonian tendency toward ordering everything metaphorically strangles a beauty which must be wild and free. The same forces ha e been at work in our minds forever, regardless of whether we used a scientific vocabulary or not.

If people were interested in a dialogue of the variability in N's writings, becuade perhaps they wish to go beyond N and use his works perscriptively, that is to seek action through his critical notion of our 'Alexandrian' culture, then there isn't anything wrong with that. In fact, to suggest that wishing to have a dialouge and challenge N's thoughts would be somehow slavish is telling towards a culture around N as such, rather than a culture around his critical assertions of society. Basically, you can drop the pony show with claiming to be holier-than-thou in the church of N. Peace.

The fact that you value other’s interpretations(even Nietzsche’s) over your own, shows that you are still begging for a savior to elucidate you on “truth”. They hold that little carrot over your head and control you with their ideals. The Overman transcends all of this, and becomes a Creator of his own values, and thus, liberates himself from his ancestors and their various cultural ideations.

Great video for those not already familiar with the topic, however I found that it was more focused towards the Dionysian then suggesting to find a balance between the two opposites. Balance is key when it comes to Apollonian and the Dionysian. Both serve a purpose and harmony between the two is the real struggle.
Ending the vid with the Turin horse and suggesting to lose yourself within the right brain for the upcoming 10 years(11 would be the right number) is not exactly good advice. Nietzsche was so opposing to the Apollonian structures that dominated his time that he succumbed himself more profoundly in the Dionysian. That path made him slowly descend into madness that culminated in the Turin horse incident. Subsequently he would write psychotic letters signing them off as Dionysus or alternatively The Crucified(Christ). Two extreme opposites. Dionysus I get but the Christ, the other extreme which he criticized and opposed firmly against imo shows that at that point he couldnt distinguish the two from eachother and more likely saw them as the same, or this was his attempt to renconcile one with the other and find a homogenus middle ground. We may never know for sure what happened but the man was mad.
Order and chaos, the light and dark, Batman and the Joker basically the yin and yang... One cannot exist without the other and needs the balance between the two always. These forces are complementary, interconnected and interdependant. Too much of one is rarely good news on the long run.
For artistic intent I will argue that its imperative to go ahead and lose yourself within the Dionysian, even if it takes a long while but dont get stranded there, you need to find a way back to the Apollonian for your own sanity.

I recently loved Ether Perel's talk 'The Erotic Is In Antidote To Death', which doesn't mention philosophy at all and is more focused on wellbeing/the everyday as opposed to scholarly thought, but is (I think) underpinned by similar ideas to this at its core.. it reminded me of the Dionysian in the sense that she proposes that we need to honour the mysterious, the earthly, and allow ourselves to play and create things or we essentially feel dead and stuck in life. she actually calls relationships the theatre and drama of life which seems very relevant and very greek... I just thought I'd mention this talk in case it interested anyone else to listen to as a sort of modern, accessible (lovely to listen to tbh), interpersonal-level take on a very old idea.

This has proven incredibly odd for me. I was reading The Birth of Tragedy and recalled some things said by Iain McGilchrist about the asymmetrical nature of the brain. I then started watching videos involving these Dionysian and Apollonian ideas to see if it matched as well as I thought. Before long I stumbled onto this video that offered great confirmation. I especially enjoyed the way the right brain was related back to boxing and combat sports. I've been boxing for two years and I always find that I do better when I think less. These flow states are like low degree ego dissolution. They're embodied and yet simultaneously out of body with reason detaching itself completely in the most extreme moments. Thanks for making a video that almost seems directly for me.

The article that you presumably got this from, 'The Anatomy of The Ego' (Tinnin, Psychiatry : Vol 52, No 4, 1989) is a speculation article proposing the left hemisphere the seat of the Freud's concept of ego function and self. Since then we have discovered that the brain is much more lateralized that we thought, and that left/right hemisphere distictions are not as important as we originally thought.

The cult of appollo had actually quite a deep connection to the unknown and thus the right hemisphere, in that most greek oracles were apollonian oracles, like the oracle of delphi. The sun was always the symbol of clairvoyance and seeing through the veil. The sun always represents perception, as it was regarded as an eye in the sky.
On the other hand, dionysus, or phanes as he was called by the orphic schools was actually originally a deity of light (phanes the bringer of dawn and light), and had also solar attributes. Phanes being actually a form of vishnu, as all the orphic schools (and thus anything dionysian) was associated strongly with hinduism. This can not only be seen by the idea that dionysus went to india, but the whole iconography of phanes with the worldegg, the serpent, and the creation of the creator (ouranos/brahma) from him, is clearly a reference to puranic view on creation. As phanes, dionysus seems to have more fiery attributes, and seems more an amalgamate of both the solar deity and lunar deity. Phanes is also called eros (the primordial eros, not the olympion reincarnation of the roman pantheon).
The sun of course has its association with both thought, ego, knowledge and breath (prana/pneuma), and dionysus having attributes of a lunar deity, also due to his association with vegetation, drinking and excess. I would define the 2 drives as the logos-drive (left brain) and the eros-drive (right brain). This is what is lacking for me in deities such as Jesus, where the eros-drive seems to be entirely ommitted. The true absolute deity has both logos- and eros drive in balance. Instead of an eros-drive, the thanatos drive is built into the christian deity, thanatos being the brother of eros. Selfsacrifice, ascetism and abstinence are thus equally right-brained as the indulgent dionysian drive.. Nietzsche would probably associate these with the appollonian drive, but iconography and lore says otherwise.. Both the cultivation and starvation of emotion are both right-hemispheric. Acquiring knowledge via either thought or perception are left-hemispheric. What i do like about the appollonian-dionysian system is that it does not reduce the lunar to the female and the solar to the masculine principle. This sexual dualism is problematic, and in many polytheistic/monistic cultures like greece and india, we can see there are masculine and feminine deities of both sides.
    left right middle
    lunar solar mixed
    dionysus appollo hermes
    eros logos phanes
    shiva brahma vishnu
    pradyumna (kama) sankarsana (ananta)vasudeva
    soma surya indra
    feeling thought willpower
    body mind spirit spark
    sal sulfur mercury
    religion philosophy magic
    and female deities
    tiamat/ereshkigal nammu inanna/ishtar
    kaos sophia barbelo
    artemis athena aphrodite
    diana minerva venus
    kali sarasvati lakshmi
    durga savitri radha
Some of these overlap in functions, some of them are barely correlated - venus as the mixed deity would represent aphrodite urania, the "higher" aphrodite. In many cases minerva is much closer for example to lakshmi (both have an owl) as aphrodite, who also shares lakshmis qualities of being born from the sea.
With shiva its a bit complicated because shiva is actually an ascetic, and although he consumes ganja, he lives a strict life, and goes against the eros drive, which would be right-hemispheric. Anyway, there is an overlap in all of these, and the tendencies should not be so much separated as they both cover the same mysteries with different approaches. The appollonian mysteries used "dionysian" methods to prophesize and become clairvoyant, as the idea of clairvoyancy is always associated with the sun. One could make a case for clairaudience as being more lunar, or that the more psychedelic ecstasy associated with certain drugs could be called dionysian, but again that overlaps directly with appollos allseeing ability. Shiva, often associated with dionysus has a lunar crescent in his hair, but he represents also the thanatos drive and destruction, ascetism and renunciation, as most shaivaite sects are strict ascetic sects. The excesses of the dionysian cult did not produce as much art and prophesy as the appollonian cult did, which had oracles all over the place.
The overlaps are interesting, because for example the followers of shiva are either ascetics or ecstatic tantrics, whereas the followers of vishnu are either magicians or devotees (of a rather dionysian approach of bhakti or agape).
Since both eros and shiva are lunar in the strictest of senses, we can for example see that both the eros-drive and its opposite (thanatos-drive) constitute the right hemisphere. The thanatos drive here being the destructive polarity of the lunar power. This makes sense because eros and thanatos were primordial brothers. The burning of kamadeva (eros) by lord shiva is again displaying an interplay in solely right hemispheric domains - shiva, meditating on the welfare of the cosmos, got hit by the flower-arrow of kamadeva/eros, and enraged by this, opens his third eye, which burns eros to ashes. Henceforth, the indian eros became limbless, and thus an unseen force, the lifedrive itself. Shiva had a son due to this flowerarrow of cupids. The disembodied deity of love was then reincarnated as the primary son of krishna, the 8th avatar of vishnu (basically all deities became sons or grandsons of krishna, shiva became sambha, a grandson of keshava), but the symbolism behind this story is that lord ananga, the bodyless cupid, is formless and allencompassing, allcreating.
Eros is the primordial force of life, and thus the positive aspect of the lunar deity. Shiva represents the destructive aspect of the same, or rather the ascetism, but also the dionysian aspect of ecstasy via drugs.
The first deity of the orphic tradition, phanes, is also called dionysus AND eros, yet he has the mythical torch of knowledge and staff associated with the solar deity. So like all dualities, the 2 forces together bring back the original deity, phanes or vishnu, who is the complete balance, the force, the allseeing allcreating and alldevouring supreme, who is both transcendent and immanent.
All dualities are bridged by bringing in a third element, which reconciles the creative and destructive forces. I tend to use the terms logos-drive (lefthemispheric, right hand path) and eros-drive (righthemispheric, lefthand path) for these groups, because the overlap is much smaller and thus the categories more clear.

This is amazing. You have studied your correspondences well, friend. Though, some of them are wrong if you attempt to map them on the Qabalistic Tree Of Life.

@@ihazmethodz7806 I do not take the tree of life as a basic template, i am primarily a hindu monist and as such do have a bit of a different worldview as the qabbalists. As such these are not in an order which would explain creation, i did not sort the list in this way ;D sun and moon in the tree of life are in the middle pillar.. But anyway, the 3rd row would be archetypes or aspects of the middle pillar.
The reason im not using it much anymore has to do with the doctrine of sin. It seems to be the PRIMORDIAL TAINT ITSELF (knowledge of the sin is the sin). So its a catch 22. I dont like that. The doctrine of sin, or flaw, and the necessity for some kind of transcending ones state, is kinda offensive to me. Nothing needs to be transcended, it already is both immanent and transcendent.
There are similarities between the upanishadic and qabalistic system (sefira), but the overall numbers in the eastern system are quite different than the phoenician qabalah: especially in regard to numbers and planetary spheres
      number dharma qabala
      1 sun (rama) kether (uranos)
      2 moon (krishna) hochmah (neptune)
      3 mars (narasimha) binah (saturn)
      4 mercury (buddha) hesed (jove)
      5 jupiter (vamana) geburah (mars)
      6 venus (parshurama) tifereth (sun)
      7 saturn (kurma) netzach (venus)
      8 rahu (varaha) hod (mercury)
      9 ketu (matsya) yesod (moon)
      10 earth (kalki) earth (malkuth)
As you can see the vedic system uses the same sequence as our week days, starting with the sun and ending in saturn.
This is one of the main differences in the numerical application of spheres or sefira. In the vedic system they are arranged differently and there is no treelike structure.
The deeper keys of the numbers, or rather their explanation, is actually missing in most western system, due to the loss of knowledge (which india did not expirience). Very few have actually understood the kabalah - Franz Bardon is the primary man to go to understand its application in terms of using the tetrapolar word (tetragram) to speak in the universal language. That is what the sepher yetzirah would explain, although it only hints at it. In india the same art is part of the tantras, which explain how to combine visualization, somatic feeling and sound/speech together into one universal expression.
Any mantra, should actually be expressed tetrapolar - visual, somatic, accoustic and conscious. Expressing a letter in this way causes changes in the micro- or macroscopic world, from the causative plane down to astral and physical plane. This is not explained by any scholars, actually it has been lost, and Frantisek Bardon restored it via his indepth knowledge of the indian tantras...
In this way the adept in india is being taught how to express letters, and whole mantra garlands, by expressing every letter visual with colors, somatic with feelings, accoustic and so on. This is why all the indian deities have this intricate allegorical iconography - every arm, weapon, crown and bodily color explains how the adept has to express the mantram or seed syllable. So the secret of the tetragram is actually how to express letters, syllables and divine names via this tetrapolar system. If one has trained visual and somatic visualization, then this becomes extremely powerful. Visualization is the adepts magic wand after all.. So for the number 3 names or syllables like "JAH", "AUM," "AIM", and so on apply. For number 4 for example the seed mantras "HRIM", "KLIM", "DRAM" and so on. Each of those syllables expresses different universal qualities and energies. Every number represents a key to apply letters - for example nr 1 is single letters, nr 2 is syllables, nr 3 is 3-letter-syllables and so on.
The tetrapolar nature of both the qabalistic and tantric systems applies the same principle to express the divine names - of which ever culture - according to the amount of letters in the key. This is what the tarot is for - the 22 pathways between the sephira - these represent letters, and each of them has archetypical images to visualize. Different sets of colors and so on, because they represent the 4 elements, 7 planets and 12 zodiacal signs. The quaternar system of four principles is universal here and there. It basically represents the 4 elements, the four psychic entities (subconscious, ego, intelligence and psyche), the four causal powers (feeling, willing, knowing and acting) and the 4 states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, sleep and the selfreference as the fourth). In their active expression they represent of course visual, accoustic, somatic and ontological expression (meaning).
It is said the goddess of speech (vak, sarasvati, sophia) has 4 arms, and in each arm she holds a different object (goad, vedas, instrument and a mudra). Every arm of hers represents one of the 4 poles of the quaternio - fire (visual), air (accoustic), water (somatic) earth (ego consciousness). The adepts know three of these, but man knows only the fourth (speech), as the upanishads say. So to know all four limbs of speech means to apply the universal power of creation - to create out of nothing. Simply speaking "AUM" does not actually do that much - therefore the upanishads explain how all 4 principles are engaged - visual (iconography), somatic (elementary feeling - heavy, light, hot and cold), accoustic, and the fourth aspect is all 3together. These tantras have to be explained by a preceptor or adept to the student, as he knows how to express and identify with the deity of the mantra. To map the indian system on the tree of life would be difficult, the theosophs tried it, but they did not actually get really initiated in to one of the sampradaya, so their correspondences are off...
In india, the creator (brahma) is actually more of a minor deity, and nobody worships him. So while in the west the epitet of creator is the primary attribute of god, in hinduism it is not at all. Basically all the orphic deities (kaos, ouroboros, phanes, eros, aethyr,...) of the greeks are all forms of vishnu. Different forms of the one. Shiva is basically a transformation of vishnu - he is also the one god.. But the same cannot be said about the devas, like indra, agni and so on. They would be on the level of olympians, and not primordial, infinite and transcendent. The basically form the functions of mind, body and senses - which the upanishads map out clearly - indra is the hands, sun the ego, moon psyche, fire the mouth, wind the chest, and so on - this concept of the pneumatic anthropos (gnostic) or the vedic purusha/vishnu, is resembled in the qabbalah in the adam kadmon, which is basically the manifestation of the immanent aspect of narayana, and is called vishnu. Vishnu of course being the self here. All images of self are vishnu, for the shaivaite shiva - vishnu and shiva are technically the same being.
So the ayn soph aur, or supreme godhead in qabbalah, could be represented as brahman. Brahman is unknown, unknowable, absolute, transcendent and undivided. From it came all other things. Brahman is a term for narayana (vishnu) and not for brahma the creator architect.
Brahma is not opposed to vishnu, as the demiurge is to logos. The vedic system has no dualism in itself, brahma and shiva are technically aspects of vishnu. Vishnu would basically cover the whole middle pillar of the tree of life, as well as the infinite above kether. There he is called narayana, not vishnu, who is immanent and descends into the cosmos, not unlike the logos (see vedic concept of purusha).
The all-one supreme, parabrahman, para-siva, krishna or however the different schools call it, has an immanent aspect (saguna brahman, god with attributes) and a transcendent aspect (god without attributes, unknowable, the witness). God exists in both states at the same time, but we recognize usually first the immanent aspect (god is great, has thousands of names, weapons, attributes, infinite qualities - saguna brahman or narayana) and then there is the immanent aspect (where we can not say anything definite about him - nirguna brahman or vasudeva). Both nirguna and saguna are infinite and absolute, omnipotent, omniscient etc. But the world is generated out of the immanent aspect of god.
Out of narayana (saguna brahman) emerge different entities - first the worldsoul vishnu(gods presence in the universe, paramatma), as macrocosmic soul, and psychopomp, as a secondary force the individual soul (atma, spirit spark). These 2 constist both of brahman, but one is unlimited, the other limited. You are both of these. Then time also emerges out of the lord, as well as nature as an abstract principle called prakriti (we could call this the matrix).. The matrix exists in three separate principles, or three alchemystic primes, which some would call object-subject-senses... Or body, mind and senses. These three are material, and the individual soul is seated within these three, just as a hand is inside different gloves. When the soul realizes that it is also the worldsoul then it achieves its original nature - brahman.
The combination of the worldsoul, soul, time and nature create what we call the cosmos - these divisions are eternal yet at the highest plance the self goes back right to the absolute vasudeva, who is the essence of the syllable aum. So the creation of matter (time and nature) and the creation of consciousness (self and the worldsoul) are 2 distinct creations.
Anyway, its all about the self and its archetypes.. Jung did a lot to restore this in the west.
Vasudeva sarvam iti - everyone is vasudeva, lord of pneuma

An attepmt to map the indian system to the tree of life would be :
      para-brahman (krishna/sadashiva)
      nirguna brahman (transcendent, vasudeva)
      saguna brahman (immanent, narayana)
      .
      .
      .
      2- shiva 1-vishnu 3-durga
      4- brahma 6-ananta/surya 5- rudra/skanda
      7- lakshmi 9-kama/eros 8- ganesha
      10-gaia
More importantly, number 1 is all monistic religions, nr 2 everything dual (zoroastrianism, gnosticism), nr 3 trinitarian systems (father-son-spirit, brahma-vishnu-shiva [dont correlate these 2 ternars, brahma is far below shiva and vishnu), nr 4 the four elements, 4 forms of vishnu, tetragram and so on... So every number gives how many letters a key has, what they mean. So the 10 numbers represent all philosophical systems from the highest (most potent) to number 10, which represents humility and the physical plane.

The left brain controls the right part of the body, while the right brain the left one. That is to say that in our body the left part is considered the Dyonisus domain. For Example in esoterism, the"left hand path" is the spiritual way of consciousness evolution through sciamanism, tantrism, and witchcraft

    I. Prelude
When our weary world was young
The struggle of the ancients first began
The gods of love and reason
Sought alone to rule the fate of man
    They battled through the ages
But still neither force would yield
    The people were divided
    Every soul a battlefield
    Every soul a battlefield
    II. Apollo: Bringer Of Wisdom
    "I bring truth and understanding
I bring wit and wisdom fair
    Precious gifts beyond compare
We can build a world of wonder
I can make you all aware
I will find you food and shelter
Show you fire to keep you warm
    Through the endless winter storm
You can live in grace and comfort
In the world that you transform"
    The people were delighted
Coming forth to claim their prize
They ran to build their cities
    And converse among the wise
But one day the streets fell silent
Yet they knew not what was wrong
The urge to build these fine things
Seemed not to be so strong
    The wise men were consulted
And the Bridge of Death was crossed
    In quest of Dionysus
To find out what they had lost
    III. Dionysus: Bringer Of Love
"I bring love to give you solace
In the darkness of the night
    In the Heart's eternal light
You need only trust your feelings
Only love can steer you right
I bring laughter, I bring music
I bring joy and I bring tears
I will soothe your primal fears
Throw off those chains of reason
    And your prison disappears"
    The cities were abandoned
    And the forests echoed song
They danced and lived as brothers
They knew love could not be wrong
Food and wine they had aplenty
And they slept beneath the stars
    The people were contented
And the gods watched from afar
But the winter fell upon them
    And it caught them unprepared
    Bringing wolves and cold starvation
And the hearts of men despaired
IV. Armageddon: The Battle Of Heart and Mind
    The universe divided
As the heart and mind collided
    With the people left unguided
    For so many troubled years
In a cloud of doubts and fears
Their world was torn asunder into hollow
    Hemispheres
Some fought themselves, some fought each other
    Most just followed one another
Lost and aimless like their brothers
For their hearts were so unclear
And the truth could not appear
Their spirits were divided into blinded
    Hemispheres
    Some who did not fight
Brought tales of old to light
    'My Rocinante sailed by night
    On her final flight'
To the heart of Cygnus' fearsome force
    We set our course
    Spiralled through that timeless space
    To this immortal place
    V. Cygnus: Bringer Of Balance
    I have memory and awareness
But I have no shape or form
    As a disembodied spirit
I am dead and yet unborn
    I have passed into Olympus
As was told in tales of old
    To the city of Immortals
    Marble white and purest gold
I see the gods in battle rage on high
    Thunderbolts across the sky
I cannot move, I cannot hide
I feel a silent scream begin inside
Then all at once the chaos ceased
A stillness fell, a sudden peace
The warriors felt my silent cry
    And stayed their struggle, mystified
    Apollo was astonished
    Dionysus thought me mad
But they heard my story further
And they wondered and were sad
    Looking down from Olympus
On a world of doubt and fear
    Its surface splintered into
    Sorry Hemispheres
They sat a while in silence
Then they turned at last to me
    'We will call you Cygnus
The god of Balance you shall be'
VI. The Sphere: A Kind Of Dream
We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim
Let the truth of love be lighted
Let the love of truth shine clear
Sensibility, armed with sense and liberty
With the heart and mind united in a single perfect sphere
    - Neil Peart

The right brain/left brain dichotomy doesn't overlay the Apollonian/Dionysian dichotomy very well, actually, because Apollo is the god of both music and the plastic arts (sculpture & painting), which are right brain activities.

    • @fohnjucker6900
      @fohnjucker6900 Год назад

Apollo is not the god of unconventional, excessive or schocking art, though. His art is focused on structure, order and intellectual communication (just like neoclassical art). I agree that visual arts involve a great deal of creativity and free-flowing organic hand movements, but there's a lot of left brained functions associated with the creation of symmetrical and proportional art forms.

The whole Left Brain and Right Brain stuff isn't even accurate. This misconception came about when we discovered that Logical heavy cognitive tasks like Maths were slightly handled more by the Left side of the brain, and Creative heavy or Imagination heavy tasks were handled more by the right side of the Brain.
You can't be a Left brained or Right brained individual, u just use different sides more sometimes depending on what you are doing.

Another right-brain thing that is Apollonian is hollistic thinking. Understanding interconnectedness and contextual perspective is an intelligent way to approach systems. The Apollonian is not excessive. Hyperfocus and hypofocus are both Dionysian.

Iain McGilchrist’s work on this is mind blowing. Between him, Peterson, and Peterson’s favorite thinkers (like Jung and Nietzsche), duality is taking on a whole new light that is philosophically slept on.

This is why I think it's such a shame that Peterson has gotten bogged down in fighting ideological battles. His thinking was far more interesting to me when his focus was intellectual, rather than political. His fixation on the "postmodern threat" has closed him off to avenues to deeper analysis. Such is my opinion, at least. I know many would disagree.

Very interesting subject as our society is very polarized, and I think (personal opinion) is due to the polarization of the two hemispheres (lateralization of brain function facilitated by the inhibitory neurons in the Corpus Callosum). It appears... that radical Conservatives tend to be left brainers and radical Liberals tend to be right brainers...and we need both hemispheres working together. A lot good food for though and reflection. Thank you.

According to social science research, another interpretation suggests itself. Conservative-mindedness increases polarization in general (dualism, black/white, us/them, etc). And so we might speculate this applies also to polarization of the hemispheres. Whereas liberal-mindedness decreases polarization. The flow state seems to describe liberal-mindedness at it's greatest extreme of high 'openness to experience'.

I would personally consider every intense emotional response as coming from the Dionysian side of our personalities, especially one that is rooted in feelings of insecurity and posessiveness. However, as any emotion, jealousy can contribute to self-reflection, identification of values and personal growth, which are more associated with the Apollonian approach to human nature.

I really would be careful when trying to describe lust as a primal instinct, because many people easily mistake their fetishization of some person they've deified in their head (some person they are viewing as an object) as lust, and usually this happens coz people want (NEED) the validation. Most common that I see is people going for people to equivocate themselves to them. The kind of people that *always* get their SOs in their Igram stories etc n never themselves.
I'd say a far better primal instinct is probably something like hunger or alarm.
