  • In this video I'm hoping to fix a vibration problem. I've tried a few different things to fix this problem like balancing the wheels, changing the lug nuts and even switching to a different set of tires but nothing has worked so far. I think the vibrations are coming from the front of the car so in this video I'm going to replace the front brake rotors and pads. I don't know how long ago this has been done to the car so it's a good thing to replace them anyway and hopefully this will also fix my vibration problem.
    Things you will need:
    » Gloves (optional)
    » Breaker bar (optional)
    » Socket wrench
    » Socket extension (optional)
    » 21mm socket (for lug nuts)
    » Jack
    » Jack stand
    » Penetrating oil
    » 14mm socket
    » Flat head screwdriver
    » Bungee cord or zip tie
    » Brake cleaner
    » Paper towels
    » Old rag
    » Hammer (if the rotor is stuck)
    » Front rotors and brake pads set (goo.gl/efjQrg)
    » Wire brush
    » High temperature grease (goo.gl/K41wPg)
    » Torque wrench set to 40 lbf-ft / 55 Nm
    » C-clamp with enough leverage/grip
    » Spring tensioners and brake caliper clips set (goo.gl/KbCYAB)
    » Pincer

    I eventually did find the problem, but I took a new set of rims to get rid of it. I switched wheels with a friend of mine who had the same setup (15x8 et25) and after that I had no more fibrations.. all this time it was just my stupid ass rims who were causing the problem. I eventually switched tires but kept the same rims and it made somewhat of a difference but I know for sure my rims are the problem but I just don't want to buy a new set of rims... maybe later, but not now haha!

    In my experience the shaking almost always is caused by an unbalanced wheel, or damaged wheel/tire, sometimes alignment. Wheel bearings almost always make enough noise to make it easy to diagnose and ball joints/tie rods usually have other signs as well.
    PS: Great how to video for doing front brakes!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад +5

      The wheels were balanced a couple of times and rims and tires are brand new so an alignment is probably a good idea! I will do that in the near future. Thanks for the advice!

    The 55kmh/110kmh shake is something which all Miata's/MX5 get when they start to get older. It's an accumilation of a whole lot of tiny things (worn out bushes, some chassis flex and more) Installing my hard dog rollbar got rid of 90% of the shake, i now really need to focus on the steeringwheel to feel it. So stiffen up that chassis! ;)
    prima kanaaltje trouwens, ga zo door :)

      Thanks man! Ik wil graag een rollbar en het is een fijn idee dat dat het hopelijk het probleem een stuk minder maakt. Ik merk het ook als ik mijn hardtop erop heb zitten, meteen minder trillingen!
      Hoe ben je trouwens aan een HD rollbar gekomen als ik vragen mag? In NL rijden de meeste met TR Lane maar ik zou ook wel een HD rollbar willen! Net even wat exclusiever!

    • @Roy.Visser
      @Roy.Visser 7 лет назад +1

      Ik heb de HardDog rollbar via ILmotorsport gehaald. Ze hebben regelmatig 10% korting en dat scheelde aanzienlijk, hij is een behoorlijk stukje duurder als de TRLane namelijk :) Wel veel en veel dikker doordat hij een stuk breder is (op mijn kanaal is hij wel te zien in DRNL Tour de la Tourette 2016). Echt heel erg blij mee en ik merkte na 100 meter al verschil kwa rijgedrag. Erg benieuwd of de ARB en Framerails die ik nog moet installeren ook zo een groot merkbaar verschil geven :)

    I experience some vibrations at the speeds you described, as well as a quick bouncing back and forth from the brake pedal mainly when braking from high speeds, do you think replacing the brake rotors would solve it? it's a 97 miata

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  6 лет назад

      It's really difficult to figure out what is causing the problem, but brake rotors are pretty cheap so I would replace the rotors if I were you. If it fixes the problem great, if not, you got a nice new set of rotors.

    Hi I have 1990 Miata. I see that your front brake pads has the V Clips (brake hardware) on them. Do you know if stock NA Miatas come with the clips? Or did you install that yourself as an upgrade? I ordered new front brake rotors and pads but the kit did not come with the V Clips. I’m under the impression that stock NA Miatas did not have the V Clips in front brakes and they were added later on to lessen the wear and tear on the brakes. Can you confirm this?

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  3 года назад +1

      As far as I know they are OEM clips but if you order a break ‘set’ they do not always supply these clips and you need to buy them separately. Some aftermarket pads don’t even have the necessary holes in which you can insert the clips. You can run without these clips no problem but your pads might rattle a bit. The clips are pretty cheap and if your pads have the necessary holes I would spend the extra money and buy the clips. Good luck!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  2 года назад

      So you save yourself the hassle of pushing back the brake piston? I don't think that's possible but you could always try and if it doesn't work, just disassemble the whole brake assembly.

    What is the torque spec for the top slider pin? The bigger one. You only covered the bottom one. I removed them both to paint the body and am now reassembling. I am finding it difficult to find a definitive torque spec. Thanks!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  3 месяца назад

      I'm finding some conflicting answers as well. Looks like the upper one (that’s the one that is normally attached to the caliper) has a lower torque spec than the bottom one. I would suggest that you set your torque wrench to 40 lbf-ft / 55 Nm for the upper one as well

    If the vibration happens when you were off the brakes, it wasn't the brakes! I'd balance the wheels first, but my guess is that you have a slightly bent wheel. When I replaced my stock wheels-one of which was probably bent/tweaked-with nice aftermarket Konigs, everything smoothed out nicely. A neat way to diagnose a loose wheel bearing is to see if the vibration goes away when you drag the brakes a bit. The brakes will straighten out the wheel, taking load off the bearing. If the vibration lessens with the brakes dragging, the wheel bearing is probably loose

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Год назад

      You are correct Dexter, the rims are the problem! That is indeed a good idea! This video is 6 years old and so are my rims but I finally have a new set of rims (proper ones!) and I'm really curious if that will fix the problem. That will be covered in an upcoming video!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  2 года назад

      It's pretty much the same process but be careful with two things; the hand brake line and the allen key at the back of the caliper. Don't push the piston back into the caliper with a C-clamp but use the allen key instead. Just Google 'Miata caliper allen key' and you will find all the info you need. Good luck!

    I have this same issue. I have read all over that you need to be really picky about getting the tires balanced. You need to find a shop that can do Roadforce balance and get the number below 15 lbs per wheel. The machine automatically passes the tire at 20 so you need a shop that is willing to pick in the extra effort. I have a shake at around 65-70mph and haven't gotten around to finding a reputable shop to balance my tires. I also feel like waiting until this tires need to be replaced.

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the response dude! It sucks you got the same problem.. I found that same piece of info as well but as far as I know no shop in my country has the "Road Force" balancing machine.. I have to cross over into Germany to find one 😓 I've tried a different set of tires and the new tires have a less aggressive pattern but that didn't fix the problem either.. 😭

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад +2

      @Jacob Tuley: I've checked and I think I'm missing 2 weights right now but the wheels have been balanced 3 times before and immediately after the wheels were mounted I still had the vibrations, so I don't think that missing weights are the problem. Thanks for the reply tho!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад

      @Thomas Andersen: Haven't tried a wheel alignment (want to install coilovers first) so that could be it. How can I check if my ball joints are worn out?

    • @kolopiom_og
      @kolopiom_og 7 лет назад +5

      I'd check the alignment as well, also check your lower ball joints and steering end-links. My car used to have some pretty noticeable vibration at around 100kph because of these. I changed the lower ball joint and steering end links, got an alignment, and now the car tracks true with no shaking.

    • @nknasi
      @nknasi 7 лет назад +2

      it's really weird on my car. a few weeks ago i installed coilovers and new wheels and tires, then went and got an alignment. The 60mph shimmy is now worse on my car than it was before! the car had a lot more negative camber before, that's the only thing I can think of that could be why it didn't do it as much. But the camber was causing uneven tire wear and looked bad so I'd rather have the shimmy than that.

    Hi, i see that you have japan racing wheels jr-11 on your car. What rim size and tire dimensions are you running? I am thinking of buying the same wheels for my Miata but haven't decided on size yet :)

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад +1

      I have 15 inch 8J et25 with 195x50 R15 and I absolutely love them! The tires are stretched a little bit so the rim edges are exposed to the curbs, that's the only problem. Before this I had 205x50 R15 and with that tire size the rims are protected.. My next set will definitely by a 205 set. You do need to roll your fenders a bit.. how-to video on that is coming soon 😉

    • @LiPoMannen
      @LiPoMannen 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the reply! :) I was thinking of 15x7 or 15x8 so i'm glad you have one of these sets. Is your car running stock height and you had to roll the fenders? Any other rubbing issues? I am running H&R 40mm lowering spring on mine and i am looking for a non rubbing setup without rolling the fender to much :P

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад

      My car is indeed on stock shocks and springs and the only rubbing I had was at my left front wheel but if I lower my car I will definitely have some rubbing. If you want a non rubbing setup you will be fine with 7J but personally I really like the look of having the tires 'filling up' the wheel well. It's looks so much better! I would really consider going for 8J and rolling your fenders a bit! It's not that hard and it will look so much better, trust me!

    • @Xdpuch
      @Xdpuch 7 лет назад +1

      MiataMods when lowering you car you will get negative camber and the wheels shouldn't rub. I had 8j et20 and 40mm lowering spring without rolling my fenders

    • @LiPoMannen
      @LiPoMannen 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the answers both of you. Will probably go for 8j with a dash of camber. Only running zero degrees at the front and half a degree in the rear.

    in 13:10, you've mentioned to tighten the bolt to 40 foot pounds. the miata spec sheet said 58- 65 foot pounds. am i reading it wrong? www.miata.net/garage/torque.html

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад +1

      No you are not reading it wrong ☺️ but it also says "Note: Some have reported stripping bolts" so I did some research on that and decided it would be better to tighten the bolt a little less then that.. I would hate to have my viewers following my instructions and strip a bolt.. • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  7 лет назад

      Yes it's pretty much the same. I think the only difference is that the caliper is hold on by two bolts instead of 1 bolt and a slider-pin, but I'm not sure about that. My how-to video should be sufficient for doing this job on a NB. Good luck!

      NBFL with 1.8/1.9L engines and 270/276mm brakes will be a bit different since the caliper is a bit different...but the process itself is pretty much the same...brakes in general are pretty much straight forward you shouldnt have any problems..

      I know you asked this 9 months ago so you most likely have solved your issue but I will respond in case someone else needs the info in the future. When you press the brake pedal, a piston comes out of the caliper which pushes your brake pads against the rotor, causing the friction that stops the car. When you remove your old pads, the piston is still protruding out of the caliper, and because your new pads are thicker than your old pads, the piston will prevent the caliper from fitting over the new pads. You need to push the piston back into the caliper by using your old pad as a backer and a c clamp to physically push the piston back into the caliper.

  • @myshots101
    @myshots101 5 лет назад +2

    I know this is a year old, and since I read most of the comments, you should definitely take a look at your drive shaft. Since it's at speed, check the joints. Those can go bad over time and they will cause something like what you're describing. You don't need to stiffen up anything, that's nonsense since you're not racing the car at a track or anything like that. But if it's at the front of the car which I can't remember if you said it was, then it may not be that. I think I helped my dad fix a drive shaft that had something similar way back. Just lift the car, put the car in neutral, make sure it's off obviously and turn the shaft manually. You can actually push/pull on it to see if the joints are bad and do the visual inspection. One more thing, put a darn pan where you work so you don't make a mess like that unless you like cleaning up all the time. One more thing, brake dust is bad for your lungs, try not to breath that if you can help it. And don't put w40 on your rubber like that. Just wipe that with a paper towel. I just thought I mention it.

      Have you ever had your driveshaft off? If you didn't mark it before removing it it could be 180 out, if so remove it rotate 180 degrees and reinstall, if not sounds like a shock absorber or strut, also jack each wheel up and slowly rotate, look for bent rim.. hope this helps
