Superb views and very rare to nail such conditions in Scotland. Looks like an anticyclone to the west bringing down a clear Arctic air mass and a subsidence inversion around 700-800m. I've only experienced conditions like that once when hiking to the summit of Tom a Choinich in glen Affric on what was forecast to be high pressure but started off very dreich with patchy drizzle. As I ascended through the cloud from the bealach the brightness increased then I was suddenly in clear blue skies surrounded by a sea of white with islands all around.
What a day! I climbed those 3 after camping in the northern corrie of Moaile Lunndaidh, was in cloud and pouring rain all day and was probably the wettest I've ever been on a hill. Tried to dry out at Bearnais both in vain. So glad you had a perfect day on them, and to see what I missed! Thank you
It was a fantastic trip Dave, Moaile Lunndaidh would be a great hill for a wildcamp. Shame about the conditions you got, definitely one to return for the views! Cheers, James
Hey, Again nice video from you. I hope I come to Edinburgh in September, so I can finally hike again in Scotland. Cheers my friend and greetings from the alps
Alas when I bagged these three (0ver two days) the weather was not the best! Your video showed me clearly what I had missed. Excellent video so keep up the good work.
What a fantastic day out in perfect conditions. The views were superb. 👍 Your timelapse while having a bite to eat was really impressive. Mountain days like this are never forgotten. I revisited Ben Dorian on 26th Feb after being inspired by your film a few weeks before. Got lucky with clear blue skies, need to finish editing my wee film. ATB Derek
I watched the Charlie vid of him doing cheesecake from there as well , i did the three that you did but clockwise then back in again and did Moruisg the next day, brilliant sunshine one day and pouring rain the next
What a hike, beautiful views on a stunning day. I've spent so much time in the Highlands, particularly west, with my wife, family and friends. Watching this, I just want to be there right now. New subscriber!
Wow, incredible views and conditions indeed. Cloud inversion! The only time I've ever experienced that in Scotland was when I did Beinn Fhada and A'Ghlas-bheinn in August 2021. Scotland is truly the best country in the world. I did these three and Moruisg at the start of last month over 2 days from Achnashellach train station, no bike and stayed overnight in the Glenuaig shelter. I went anticlockwise though starting up to the Bealach Bearnais from Pollan Buidhe. Bit of a last-minute decision to go for the big trip as had initially been thinking just Moruisg on its own, or Ruadh-Stac Mor on Beinn Eighe from Coire MhicFhearchair in the days leading up to it. Started off stunning and got the views from Choinnich & Coraichain (not quite as far as the Cairngorms, mind you, but could see out to the small isles, skye and knoydart and over to torridon and the fannaichs). Weather then closed in on the plateau at Creag Toll a'Choin (which you correctly mention is the resurveyed Munro summit!) and Maoile Lunndaidh (I too went to both just in case, as well!) very wet and poor vis and required a compass to navigate off. Down to camp then did Glenuaig to Glencarron over Moruisg and walked the 9k along the road back to Achnashellach station. Same wet conditions and poor vis on plateau but was good vis up to ~750m so decided to go for it. Sadly I sprained my ring finger badly slipping on the descent and out of action for a while. You do a great job on these vlogs, James! Very comprehensive, immersive and inspiring videos, and very expertly edited and produced. Keep up the great work. Euan
The second cairn you were at is I believe the actual Munro on Maoille Lunndaidh. The top on the other side of the plateau is higher but is the Munro top rather than the Munro. Thus making it the least prominent Munro with just 10.5m prominence and the only Munro that isn’t a Murdo.
Thank you for this It brings back Munro memories, especially when I had a base in Strathcarron and these hills were my local playground....though I don’t think I ever had weather as good as this. Best wishes for the remainder of your round. Munroist 4050.
I think your best video yet James. Spectacular day in those conditions. Love the timelapse of the mist rolling into the glen on the route up to your final munro. Well done.
Thanks Kenneth, a day I will remember for a long time! Didn’t notice the mist when I was there as it was so slow, was a great surprise to watch it back on video 😂 Cheers, James
Thanks for a great video. Could watch these dreamy conditions for ages. Especially loved the time-lapse of the cloud moving up the Glen when you were sitting.
Good stuff James. Lovely cloud inversion. Great to see the views from the last two, I was in cloud for those, i'll have to revisit them sometime. That wave of cloud creeping in as you had lunch was beautiful. Cheers, Andy.
WELL WORTH THE WAIT fantastic video and it looked amazing. Loved the fog creeping in on time lapse and the red light on your bicycle just in case somebody came up behind you :) .. Nice of Charlie to help you out with a route, he's a legend and you are sure on your way... can't say better it was just Fantastic James..thks M
Cheers Merky 😁 haha think I left the red light on whilst I was hiking too 😂 Charlie is a legend, this was a tough route though, proves how amazing he is at these long days! Atb, James
What a great day for it James. These are some fantastic mountains, did them in two trips instead of your epic day. Legs must have felt it but bet you enjoyed the ride back down to the car.
It was a great trip Jon, the legs were feeling it coming off the 3rd Munro 😂 but the freewheel out the glen made pushing the bike in worth it 😁 Cheers, James
Clear 10/10. Really enjoyable. I think your videography is marvelous. You frame things beautifully and tell your story like a pro. Nice to see you acknowledge C McCartney - another great mountain communicator.
Interestingly as far as I can gather Maoile Lunndaidh is still officially the Munro as the SMC stubbornly won'y accept theclear evidence that Creag Toll a' Choin is in fact the highest point at 1005.3m compared with ML's height of 1004.9m. I am interested to know where you got the idea that CTaC is in fact the Munro from. Unless the SMC have had a very recent conversion the official Munro is not the highest point. Anyway you did them both. I look back on these hills with amazement - I did them without a bike before I ran a step in my teenage years, but I carried on over Beinn Tarsuinn, Bidean a' Choire Sheasgaich and Lurg Mhor, obviously in summer with long days. I really was knackered dropping down to Loch Monar and back up over Bealach Bearnais.
Not 100% sure Eddie but glad I went to both tops, a long way to go back if I missed it 😂 that sounds like an epic day you had.. I was absolutely knackered after these 3.. Cheers, James
Another great video jame’s class music quality editing breathtaking views and footage this has to go on my list for sooner and not later well done to you man
Absolutely stunning video James! Are you sure you weren't in Heaven? Certainly looked that way! 😊 i'm in awe of the hikes you do and Charlie McC too! You guys are hardcore! Take care out there James Theresa 😊
I had the same weather on Gairich with views to Ben Nevis and across to the Cuillins, that looks like a cracking bike a hike and i am looking forward to getting up there , grate camera work and much appreciation of the time and effort that goes into making these vids👍
Beyond compare is this trip, you couldn't make it up and a well deserved 10/10. Had you spent the night up there and if there was no Moon the skies would have been a jewelled spectacle to be remembered for a long time. Thank you for sharing and take care on the mountains. I trust your nearest and dearest know exactly your intended routes etc?
It was fantastic Glen, I would have loved to have spent the night there. I ended up cycling out in the dark after enjoying most of the sunset 😂 Yes I leave my full route with my partner & also a time to be expected home etc, I will be investing in a Garmin Inreach soon so I can contact home from remote areas.. Cheers, James
Superb video James - you, Charlie M and Steaming Boots lead the way for these! Takes me from my front room in Blackpool back into the hills, love it! One question, I have these to do; you used a bike - how far did you go on it and taking the uphill pushes into account, do you think it was worth it? My knackered 67 year old knees need all the help they can get! Cheers.
Thanks Peter, I would say the bike was worth it.. you have to push for around 1 mile through the woods but then its slightly downhill into the Glen. I left it around 3-4 miles in.. but was really glad of it on the way out! Enjoy when you come to so them, amazing day 😁 Cheers, James
Nice looking outing .. a long way, but stonking conditions . Noting your big camera .. you must have caught a fair few images as well as your video ... do you post them anywhere?
Hi there enjoy your videos very much, especially this last one. ..stunning views. I also enjoyed the soundtrack, can you tell me who the singer / group is…sounds very Scottish , thanks Drew
Great video again, wondering what mount you are using to attach your SLR to your backpack? Had mine out last few weekends and just using the shoulder strap and amazing the amount of times it gets it the way. 😀
Hi James, can I please ask a question and sorry if this is really daft/obvious!! When you do those shots when you pan around 180 (like at 15:58 on here) so that the camera goes from facing you to looking straight ahead... are you just turning a Go-Pro around in your hand, or are you using some sort of selfie stick with a rotate setting, or like a 360 degree camera or something? It just seems so very smooth, but maybe that's just the image stabilisation feature (and/or a steady hand!)? Am planning to start making some videos of my days out on the munros, and looking for tips/inspiration. Thanks!, Duncan
Hi Duncan, No problem, its just my GoPro Hero 7 Black, the GoPros have great stabilisation so its just me turning the camera 😁 I did have an Insta360 at one point but don’t have it anymore, you might see clips from it in other videos 😁 Cheers, James
Hi James, You cracked it... Well done, great effort and many thanks for the shoutout its much appreciated. Cheers, Charlie
Thanks Charlie & thanks again for the inspiration on the route 😁
