Would love to see a video about the daily maintenance needed to keep the wood stove up and running, what total wood is needed to heat the home and how long it takes to prep. Great video as always!
@@philipwest4338 Absolutely! 2024 will be more focused on living with the systems, rather than designing the overall blueprint (the main goal for 2023)
Awesome job! I want to bump this in the algorithm but also to encourage anyone reading this to PLEASE try and change your local zoning ordinances to allow for stuff like this! It's a long process (I'm working on it now) but nothing will change if no one does anything.
love these updates!! Also would love to see a daily chores video. Also interesting if there is a per person number to the data. Like for enough eggs for 2 people you'll need 4 chickens or something like that. For 2 people you should have 2 sq yards of raised garden beds or something.
Might have missed the video where you discussed this, but it needs to be pointed out that in a lot of places, this wouldn't be allowed. We're building off-grid, but are having to do a lot of work arounds to stay within regulations. A THOW because if it's on wheels in our county, it's not regulated. A shed wouldn't be legal because it's not big enough. Some counties don't allow water collection/have regulations for it. Some counties/states require you to be tied into the grid, even on solar. We're pretty sure our THOW exempts us in our state, but its a very grey area. Some counties no longer allow wood stoves/highly regulate the stoves. The composting toilet may not be allowed in some counties. And you may have to get permission to allow shower/sink water to drain onto your property (grey water system). Also, chickens (usually roosters) may not be allowed in your area. All this to say, I *HIGHLY* encourage people to do this! But, know the law, and choose your property wisely. Don't think you can go onto just any property and do this set up. Do your homework so you won't be heartbroken by over regulation. BUT, of you're fully informed, you'll rock your off-grid lifestyle.
They've mentioned this before in other media, the big solution is to actively try to make change in the county you want to live in so that it IS allowed! I've started doing this myself, and I've found that this is really a non-partisan issue. If you can figure out how to write a proposal in a way that appeals to whomever is in charge of your county's zoning, then there's a higher likelihood for change. Also getting community support is huge in this area too!
Another regulation could be that the land is not allowed to built a house on, even one that could be removed with ease. These are sometimes also tied to law that you have to have a regular address that is registered.
You should look into a rocket mass heater for a wood stove, also I wouldn’t recommend going through the ceiling. It’s harder to air seal and water can penetrate it easier as well.
So badass. I would love to see you guys do one up in the northeast or in colder environments. It would be awesome to see what you guys come up with. I love the mini home idea, I’ve been thinking about this for awhile
Thanks for sharing and my opinion about "Join and/or Patreon" in today's society everyone wants in your back pocket for a subscription "why" if I mis content because I'm not subscribed, then I think to myself, its not worth it, there are plenty of copy cats to choose from, but that is my opinion. there way too many ads now, rather its google or internal, seems like we have lost sight why we became content providers in the first place, its just like corporate greed, thanks for listening to my rant, have a great day!
We have one! The Delta Ecoflow. We use it for the tent :) GREAT all in one setup. Only downside is that if something breaks, it's harder to repair or upgrade.
If you want warm water any time you should buy a big stove.. one thats convertabile to a water heating device My neighbours have smt like that It has lots and pipes and stuff Not supet pretty maybe you guys can hide some stuff make it better but it does provee boiling hot water for anything you might to connect these copper pipes to
Seems more like a hunting camp than a home. For the price, it seems like a used fifth wheel RV would be more functional & cozy. Is one of you going to live there or is this just for social media?
You talk a lot about efficiency but why not install the solar panels on the roof? Make a nice floating alu frame mounted on the sides of the roof so you don't have to worry screws leaking water in, the main reason is that DC power doesn't travel that well, so with shorter DC wires fewer losses, also the solar power keeps the heat away from the roof, you hear less rain splatter on the tin roof because the solar panels are the first to get hit with rain and the panels cool easier having less wind resistance somewhere off the ground.
Depends where you're looking. Generally in a lower population area you're gonna spend like $6k-$10k/acre but you can find some lots of like 40+ acres for 60k. It's all over the place really
Not everyone has land, and for the ones that do. Hoa can be a pain in your rear.I’ve been trying to come up with a rain water and solar sys to put on say balconies for the ones that do have them. I know everyone doesn’t and I’m thinking of something for them. Solar binds for window. I know they sell them but not good ones. Yet not ever window faces south anymore. So nothing is 100 right but the ideas of help give others the idea. Maybe they can find a solution for their situation, right?!. It’s easy to start from scratch and have a design, yet hard for structures that have been here for decades if not centuries!
I would love to add a biodigester to my housing systems, but living in super cold temps would render it useless for half the year. How much more helpful is the greenhouse, and could I hook the pod up to a grill instead of a stove?
then its a question of size and insulation. mind that you have some pressure and need either an outlet or some kind of flexible walls(like in this video). You can also try to build it partially underground, if thats allowed in your area.
A Berkeley water filter is NOT a purifier. If you're reading this please do your research before consuming pathogens and only use these filters with testing well or municipal water supplies.
A sensible plan to be healthy, warm, dry and safe. But the obstacle, the people that run things would rather. You live in a tent on the sidewalk and poop in the gutter. Than let you be free to help yourselves. Even Hooverville was better and safer than living in a tent or under a tarp on the sidewalk.
First, why not an actual mini fridge, second why not an actual bed. I don’t know maybe it’s just the ascetic they were going for but it feels like a little cabin where you can work from. In my opinion it’s missing the functionality of an actual off grid cabin like I feel like I would only be able to stay a few days like you don’t even have any blankets or pillows for your futon I don’t know maybe I’m over analyzing but it doesn’t seem very practical or appealing
I love the ideas and demo property. It is, unfortunately, just that, a demo and not sustainable. There is a reason the "Three Little Pigs" was a propaganda by the US gov to prep. Why not try a split unit for heating and air? They're used often in Europe.

How do you keep the ibc tanks from freezing in winter ??

Are you guys planning on trying your process and systems in other climates specifically somewhere you get a ton of snow low temps high winds
Not anytime soon. That would cost of a ton of money we don’t have currently. We’re using land we own locally for these projects.
Paul Wheaton is the go to guy for those very cold climates.
Can you post a video but adding a yurt also you should try adding more homestead animals

Do you plan on living in it full time?
My only question is bathing and oersonal hygine???
We’re working on an offgrid bathhouse! Compost toilet, rainwater shower, hot water from solar heater or biogas heater
What brand of little wood heater is that you're using in your shed?
When's a new video coming out ?
Would you use the wood stove as a cooktop?
Yes, we will once we reconfigure the stove pipe to exit the rear of the stove and leave through the chimney.
