    Welcome to our 30 day off-grid build for October of 2023! We’re assembling sustainable, affordable, off-grid systems to provide for the 5 basic physiological needs for 2-4 humans: Creative shelter, fresh water, green sanitation, clean energy, and local food are things that make the world truly better and more enjoyable. Beyond having fun building all of this and sharing it with you, one big goal for this project is to clearly illustrate how creative & sustainable solutions can solve our housing affordability crisis and free young people to avoid working paycheck to paycheck to survive in our modern economy. We need a fresh vision for living well! Many people are seeking a closer connection to nature, a slower pace of life, an affordable lifestyle, a sustainable lifestyle, and freedom from being indentured to our modern economic system. Mostly though, we just love building off-grid systems!

    Well wood that is energy dense and seasoned (you need to season it so it smoke way less) cost good money/labour/storage but on other side it's good to have also this consideration.
    Coal is also interesting source of heat but wrongly burn can turn street into great war trenches XD

    Great video. The horizontal extension is trouble. It will need to be disassembled each year to clean and inspect. The vertical has a clean out but the build up in the horizontal will be a hazard If i may also offer, Durarock board behind or in place of the metal on the wall. A double layer will be fire proof and provides a heat battery to help the free wood fire when burned down, to release more heat through the night and into the cold mornings. Thanks for the great video and an idea for a video i need to do on the homestead furnace. Heat 3000 sqft with 4 logs all night. Tune in to check it out in a couple days 🤠

    How feasible is it to use some of the residual heat that's in the smoke? For example to heat water for tea or showering?

    • @liamsouthwell27
      @liamsouthwell27 2 месяца назад

      I would guess not very feasible, As a general rule, gases are less dense than liquids so not efficient to transfer heat from gas -> liquid than liquid -> gas. But it can still be done. The other problem with your suggestion is that chimney exhaust needs to follow a direct route to outside so you can't really snake it for long distances in order to set up a heat exchanger. Also, the fact that you're using smoke would mean that all those pipes would need to be cleaned regularly to prevent build-up. What would work best for your suggestion are some solar water heaters on the roof maybe?

    Silly to not go through the roof. The more chimney pipe you have indoors, the less heat you're blowing out. Think pf every foot of stove pipe like it was a 1000w heater. That's a lot of wasted heat. Plus just cleaner and looks less crappy.

    • @acornlandlabs

      We hope that others learn from our experience :) We'll test a few approaches, and perhaps end up going through the roof in the end. Logs can be free -- you just need access to land or to have land. Oil is never free. Where do you live? We get logs from our property, but if you don’t own any land, ask around! If it was possible to run the methane harvester in the winter, that would be great.
