    Hi Teoh, Thanks for the video. I love the kuretake Zig.I just want to add two things. The biggest case of this brush pens is 80. Also, the best paper to work with them is Bristol Smooth paper. Since the paper do not absorb the ink fast, it allows to flow when you us your water brush. You should try it.

      Can this be used for calligraphy? I find the brush very difficult to control

      @@tnchv-a I have seen people using those for caligraphy, I never have using for that. But I recomend you if you use those for calligraphy do it in a really smoth paper.

      Bristol Smooth is absolutely the best paper for these, but you can also use them on watercolor paper if you use them exactly like you would watercolors (as in not applying them directly with the brush tip, but putting them on a palette and picking them up with a wet brush)

    I'm surprised they didn't bleed through the paper before you applied water over them. Most water based inks as in fineliners and water based markers will bleed through unless it's thick watercolor paper. On some papers if I just draw and don't go over the lines a second time they won't bleed through. Those are nice brush pens. Thanks for the review and demo Teoh. ^_^

      +James Barton These should work fine on normal drawing paper. It's not that wet although I won't use it on paper that is less than 100gsm. But if not drawing on both sides it's fine.

    I’m loving that there are so many more options of self-contained brushes that have actual bristles, now. I’ve been curious about these and, difficulties aside, you’ve got me wanting to try them even more! Aaah!

    I find the best results colouring only a small area and applying water whilst the ink is still wet, or scribbling on something resistant and using a brush is the best method for me. By the way they are also sold in sets of 80 where I live.

      I was happy to see this review on the brush pens. I see they're not waterproof . But I'm still interested in them. Thanks Teoh.

    Like all watercolor pens they like cold press watercolor paper if you want to use them instead of a classic watercolor palette, then they dissolve nicely and leave hardly any stain. But like all watercolor pens they are extremely picky when it comes to the watercolor paper. Mostly they stain the paper and you have to work with the line marks they make. I checked them on a bunch of watercolor paper. If I hadn't tried them myself I wouldn't have purchased them after your review.
    I didn't have that dry brush effect as much as you did, but then I didn't pay to much attention to it I will look into it, once I purchased the watercolor paper from yet another brand, so when I publish my final opinion on watercolor pens I don't get lopsided like the last time.
    I love to use watercolor pens in combination with liquid watercolors from Talens or Dr Ph Martin.

    I have them. For coloring I think its better to put the ink over a surface like a pallet or glass or acrylic and use then with another brush.

    I own the 24 pack and love using them on my little doodles. I bought them for the portability. Was going to go on my first real vacation and wanted to try to doodle and was too chicken to take my portable watercolors. Bought the Kuretake Zig Clean brush pen, thinking I would take it but ended up leaving it at home. LOL Love the video! :)

    the only downside with actual brushes pens is that they are so dry but there are times where the ink is too much

      You need to dip it on water just take control because it depends on the water it absorbs.(sorry for my wrong grammar beacause i am a filipino)

    Sorry second note: Arteza makes a waterbrush pen set at a fraction of the cost. I have the gouache from arteza and its pretty good. Especially if you add honey to the mix to keep it in your palette. But anyway it seems like a great student level grade company for certain mediums before jumping in the 150 to 300 price ranges for artist grade supplies.

    Thanks for this review it came at the right time I was thinking of purchasing these pens but the colors aren't deep and dark enough for my liking. I do like the zig black color and I'll probably purchase a few more of those cuz I like how it looks once you add water to it. By the way I like the sounds of the birds in the background

    I find something like book paper, cardstock, or bristol to work well with inks and markers like this. Great video as always Teoh!

    I kept looking at these pens, but never bought them because I didn't know if they were actual brushes or the nibs like Tombow or others like it use. I can't seem to work with Tombow and brushes like it, so I was kind of scared to order these as I hadn't seen them in stores yet. I love the Pentel ones and I've also got some other ones with brush ends, but they tend to not have as many different colours available. Thank you so much for this review, it made me actually want to buy a pack to try them out!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад

      I prefer the Pentel ones. I like larger bristles in general. And the Pentel ones are refillable.

    • @KiaZiShiru
      @KiaZiShiru 7 лет назад

      Yeah, I like the larger bristles too. But to easily have a large range of colours, I like that these are actual bristle brushes, which are really hard to find around here. Even the Pentel ones are really hard to find outside of like... 4 or so colours around here. So knowing that I can use these really helps.

    I bought some last year, and enjoyed taking them out in the winter to sketch with. They’re not lightfast, but it was fun to be able to add a bit of colour to quick sketches. But I was actually hoping to refill them with some Ecoline colours that I have. Unfortunately I couldn’t out how to open them - they’re well very sealed.

      You might have to open the from the front. I can't see any opening from the back.

    I really like that you can dip the tip on the water and go from light too dark. But I had a hard time when I first got them because I had to go over all the papers I had until I learned on wich ones they performed their best. But once I found, they are pretty nice to work with. I bought them thinking about using them for character design work, not bigger than A4 size page. I'm not sure how would they perform on a bigger scale work. Thanks for your reviews Theo!

    This blending (red into orange, blue into red) is a very common technic in using markers or magic-pen.

    I like your review, but you are not using them in the best way, as others have mentioned. That makes your conclusion not the best it could have been. Pens like these are very good if you use them as intended on the correct paper and with a different approach :-) In this case the pens not working as intended isn't the fault of the pens ;-)
