  • Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pen Review, Demo & Comparison By now you have probably heard about these fabulous markers that have been taking the crafting word by storm (OK I could probably say that about 10 different brands right now LOL!) but what makes these different are the fact that they have real brush bristles rather than a felt brush nib. Is this important to you? For some this will be an awesome feature and for others it may not be. I got my markers from Hallmark Scrapbook: hallmarkscrapbo...
    *Please note, these are affiliate links, if you make a purchase of anything at Hallmark Scrapbook after one of these links I receive a small portion of the sale. Please do not feel obligated to:) My mission is to give an honest review of the product so you can spend your craft dollars wisely.
    Products I use or mention:
    Kuretake Clean color real brush pens 24 pack (best for those who want precision coloring and watercolor effects, easy to use, not the best for journaling or inking up a stamp): hallmarkscrapbo...
    Real Brush Pen 12 pack (per pen cost this is a better deal!): hallmarkscrapbo...
    Spectrum Aqua Markers, a steal of a deal (better for stampers and scrapbookers who want a journaling tip and also want to be able to ink up a stamp wtih the marker, felt brush tips will fray with repeated use though) hallmarkscrapbo...
    Bristol paper for use with watercolor marker pens: hallmarkscrapbo...

    In case any wants another opinion, I have owned these for 3-4 years and they are still juicy and colorful and blend wonderfully! I have stored them every which way and have had no leakage or drying out issues. They are truly unique and I love them. I agree with you Lindsay on the Distress Markers, I bought the whole set and they stink. They are dry and they grab the paper and won't blend at all unless I scribble them into a block or something first. I am NOT happy with them at all.

      +Colour Crazy honestly I don't use them everyday. I certainly use them monthly, but I truly enjoy using Copics, colored pencils and other markers and pens, so I don't use these constantly. I hope that helps. 😉

    I really admire your motherly skills. Moms definitely do not get enough credit, and you can hear how polite she was in the background, apologizing for interrupting. It must be difficult trying to film around a multiple children family, not to mention twin girls! oi! Happy belated mother's day, but that should be everyday!

    Hi Lindsay. I have a little feedback for you on this review. I own all the markers you discussed except the WN. The best feature of the Zig is that you can paint into a wet area whether it is wet with clean water or a different color. You cant really do that with any of the nib type markers because they absorb the liquid back into the nib. I'm not sure if that is clear but I hope you know what I mean. These also work extreemely well with the tip to tip method as well as laying down pigment and the placing water just at the edge to bleed into it. I dont feel like they really fall in the same class as the nib watercolor products because the brush takes them to a hole new category. You reviewed them as if they were a water soluable marker. I wish you would have reviewed them like you did the Gansai Tambi, using watercolor techniques because that is what really makes them stand out. Oh, and about getting the other colors. Yes, yes, yes. There are some really lovely soft pale colors that you don't always see in other sets as well as some nice vibrant colors that really do make it look like you copic colored your image. I request that you do a watercolor video using these colors as if they were just coming from your pan. Thanks for the review. I know some people think you should just make things. I personally buy many items based on yours and other peoples reviews.

      Tammy Mohr thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Yep, doing tip-to-tip blending is one of my favorite aspects to these pens over others. It really works beautifully with these pens! I also like putting the inks from these pens down on an acrylic block and mixing them with water to soften them before putting them to paper. That really extends the palette with more pale options than are available in my set. Even diluted with water and being more pale, they are still just as beautifully vibrant as when using them full strength. Can you tell I LOVE these pens?! LOL

      @tammyvid 9 лет назад +5

      TheDailyMel thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich its so cool to put blue down on a block and pick up with say a yellow marker. You can actually see the green in the bristles and it lays down a perfect gradient from green to yellow. These are truely awesome.

      north shore thanks for this comment!!😀 I bought mine about 16 months ago, (when I discovered RUclips?! Lol 😂 I guess I’m a little behind in the times!! 52 yrs old!) I only used them once!! Unfortunately/fortunately I’ve become more addicted to art tutorials, than actually Doing actual art so far?!😳 I first found Lindsey❤️, Steve from “ The Mind of Watercolor” and Carrie from “The Watercolor Misfit” they are my true inspirations!!❤️ BUT somewhere in this wonderful journey of learning on RUclips, I also found card making!! ( I CANT believe how much more “STUFF/product” is out there now, compared to my scrapbooking days in the 90s?!!) So I’ve been on a spending spree ( PLEASE don’t think I’m bragging!! I’m not! I’m a huge bargain shopper, I totally live paycheck to paycheck!) buying what I think I need for painting, cardmaking and resin projects!! Crazy right??!! I know I have to stop, I have major organizing to do, so I can get going!! ( if I had just stuck with watercolor/acrylics, and really listened to Lindsey❤️ about being frugal, and that we “DON’T NEED EVERYTHING!” I probably wouldn’t be feeling so overwhelmed!🥺 My next DREAM TUTORIAL💗😇 would be LINDSEY DOING A SPRING CLEANING OF HER CRAFT ROOM (NOT that it needs it!! But she has TONS of “stuff” she’s acquired over the years, and I love the fact it’s not a fancy craft room with all built in Cabinets, and so on!!) AND SEEING STEP by STEP HOW😀 SHE DOES IT??? MAYBE Lindsey will think about this?? Who knows?? But HOW nice would it be, to watch a step by step clean out/ bring back it all back in and organize it, with the same storage solutions you already have??? Sorry to have blabbered on for so long, but while I was writing this to u, more things kept popping up in my head?! Liz Cape Cod Massachusetts 😊💗

      Reporting back as I was able to test both.
      Well, the “real brush” as the name implies, has real bristles and it’s softer and less structured than the typical felt brush tip.
      The “felt tip” is more akin to a tombow, though the tip is shorter. For a non-beginner or someone wanting to do lettering, the felt tip will feel more comfortable.

    Very interesting ! But that is hard to choose from. I definitely need to by some water based markers but don't know which one to pick. Maybe the Spectrum noir, because of the price and the easy lifting. But I also like the brush of these, gosh I don"t know.!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 лет назад +1

      StylHarmony if you are going to want to write AND ink up stamps go for the Spectrum Aquas, if you wnat to color detailed images and have a fine brush feel go for the Zig Kuretake, you can get by with a smaller pack of the zigs too for coloring.

      SORRY, I was just being funny. Or I thought I was being funny... maybe not?! I am loving the videos. I did buy some Daniel Smith Watercolors and a Prima set on sale, with 10% off and free shipping. And a Meijelo palette at 65% off. Now I am in search of the right brush and paper for me and I will be all set. I made my nieces travel sets in Altoid tins, with inexpensive paint, mini ice cube trays and white appliance paint. I found small boards for 50 cents each, added a clip, and we are all enjoying watercolor painting. (I added glycerine to the paint just as you suggested. They worked out great. Thanks for that tip)

    Hi Lindsay
    I love ALL of your videos so THANKS for taking the time to make them!! I made 2 bookmarks on 140lb watercolor paper. I used the hot pink and red for my background. In about 6 weeks they faded to almost nothing. Have you had this problem? I also sealed it with a Prismacolor sealer for watercolors so I am not sure if that was the problem. Thx

    Lindsay I just wanted to let you know that there is another company that makes these brush markers they are called Akashiya Sia and they are very similar but I would like you to look into them and see if you can tell a difference between the two. I do know one big difference is that the Zig has 80 colors (up to 60 in a pack and the last 20 individually) and the Akashiya only has 20 colors that I have been able to find. I have noticed a huge difference between the Zig and the Aqua from Spectrum markers. I'm not sure if it's my paper or what but I can't get them to blend out without seeing the line in the paper. Speaking of paper, have you done a review on watercolor paper??? If not have you thought of maybe doing one? I am having some serious issues trying to find a good watercolor paper that doesn't shred on me.

    • @krisnm22
      @krisnm22 9 лет назад +2

      Try using Fluid water color paper: the easy block. Made by global art materials. I tried using the Tim Holtz paper which was okay but it would shred if I went over the paper too much.

      Thanks I guess I will try that too. I just feel like a watercolor paper store right now with all the different ones I have bought and tried. Seriously I have like 6 different types, nope make that 7! LOL CRAZY right?!?! I am so tired of buying so many and not knowing what to look for. That is why I was asking thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich to see if she could do one if she has a selection of her own.

    Lindsay great reviews on the various markers. I find that I like the water markers much better to work with and Spectrum and now the Zig Clean Color are my favorites. I was wondering if the Zig are refillable? Or if its just the Alcohol markers need refilling? I also found Maureen Hayes comments very helpful as I'm just starting to use the water markers.

      +CraftyPaws now that I have had these a while I would like to have more colors so I would say get the bigger set if you can swing it. I think if you are choosing between and the Gansai Tambi watercolors (refering to the comment you left on that video) I'd go with the markers because you can get comparable watercolors at a much lower price than the gansi tambis:)

    Lindsay, first off, thank you so much for this comparison & review! I have seen reviews of the Clean Color pens, but never a side-by-side comparison of them and other markers. One thing about the Spectrum Aqua markers that is different, is you can apparently not buy them individually, like you can with the Clean Color. I've been debating between the 2, but the Clean Color pens are winning out there, just for that reason. If one marker/pen runs out of ink, I don't want to have to buy 12 just to replace that one! Again, thanks. Now I just have to be able to afford the darn things! LOL

And yes keep checking Hallmark for items that sold out I got a stamp set that was out the last time I looked. Thanks so much I had never heard of Hallmark Scrapbook until I watched your Video. As for these markers they are on sale right now. I'd like to get them but holding out for now, gotta start using what I've got. Susan Wareham Yes. mix equal parts water and glycerin and add it to the pen barrell, you might be able to pull off the fine tip end and use an eyedropper to drop the fluid in. I've done it with all of my old waterbased markers.. I am so glad you like Hallmark Scrapbook too!

The Zig Clean Color Brush Pen markers are superior to most other watercolor markers. wow, you got a crazy good deal on amazon! You have to keep your eyes out because Amazon prices fluctuate to get people to buy then when the item ranks high they jack the price back up. Small sellers can't take the losses that Amazon can and sometime the manufactures undercut their wholesalers. I stand behind Hallmark Scrapbook, I usually find them to have the best price for the items they carry. Sorry for your trouble though:(

    I like the Spectrum Aqua markers - but I only purchased the colours I use. No point in overbuying or over-stocking... Spectrum Aquas can be used on Shrink plastic , but dilute them first in a plastic tile or similar. I found I could use the Kuretake Wink of Stella brush markers on Shrink plastic. Fun stuff! I have some Chameleon markers (alcohol) and the ever-popular Promarkers which are also effective on shrink plastic and Centura pearl. Need to test on Neenah Solar (forgot I had some!) now...!!!!

    I have Whispers and Papermania, from years ago. I have always believed them to be the same product, but I could be wrong, they seem identical. Papermania are still available from Docrafts, but I don't know if they are the same as 15 (ish) years ago. I have been searching for a modern alternative to these pens, but so far none have come anywhere near the quality of these old pens, which are still working, none have dried up, lost their tip quality etc. The only ones I haven't tried so far, are the Tombows. I have order some really cheap ones...60 for £20. These have such excellent reviews I though it could be fun....or funny. Or just plain sad.

    A few questions, if I may:
    The Zig pens (I'm particularly interested in) - I take it that they are not maker pens/felt tip... the tip is actually a brush very much like the water pens for watercolour (as you also use in the video)?
    What is inside the barrel? Is it a liquid filling like the water in the water pen barrel or is it ink/colour in sponge like inside a "normal" felt tip pen?
    If you just want to use them like a felt tip pen, without any after-work blending or water, will they do OK?
    I noticed that you blended colours with the one pen - how does it.. and how well does it, get rid of the picked-up colour.
    I do notice that you keep colouring with the "contaminated" pen and it returns to its own colour quickly - are they all that good or does one risk cross-coloured "nibs" (maybe with darker purple and a pale yellow)?

    Hi Lindsay, love your reviews! I am trying to decide on an inexpensive watercolor marker. These markers seem to be the best choice but they are not so affordable. I ran across the Docrafts Artiste or the Santoro set and they seem to be affordable, have you used them at all?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  7 лет назад

      I have not but they like like a felt tip pen similar to tombow. There are a couple brush end pens out now, check amazon, Mozart has a nice set, there is only 20 colors but since they blend well you don't need a lot, same with these zigs, since they blend you don't have to have many. I would look for reviews or tutorials with the docraft ones and ask the owners how much they have used them and if they are still juicy.

    Thanks for a great video. I was all ready to order these new zig markers because everyone who has used these markers has raved about them but I already have a complete set of aquamarkers, complete Tim Holtz Distress markers and

    Hi Lindsay,
    I am just starting out and currently have no water based markers... I have big mark its but find I am struggling with these when it comes to blending and them reacting to the ink.... I would be using them to colour and do water colour cards... I am a mum of a 2,4 and 6 year old so water colour painting can be interrupted. Was wondering if these would be better than the spectrums for this... If I am going to invest I want to invest wisely. 😊. I don't own rubber stamps at the minute so would not really be using these on the stamp more on the images after. Thanks for the review.
    Cheers Jade

    Hi Lindsay, quick question... Do you know if these Kuretake Clean Color Real Brush pens are lightfast? Most of the watercolor cards and small works I do are gifts and I'd hate to give them to someone... they frame it or sit it out on a desk and after a year, the colors have all faded. I searched the Internet before coming back to ask you this question and couldn't find a good answer. I was horrified to discover some tin cans I'd used with alcohol inks (and sprayed with Krylon Triple Thick Clear Varnish) had all faded after people sat them out on display... would hate to spend time doing projects with these pens and have the same thing happen (even though I'd be using them on watercolor paper or Bristol vellum; not tins). Maybe these are good for journaling and cards... not things that will be displayed out in the open... Your thoughts, please. :-)

    LOL Grateful Dead t-shirt!! Thanks so much for this review! Long time subscriber, since your first craft room tour! I learn so much from you!
    ~About the Distress Markers, I've had them since they came out (I got the whole collection for half off, this was before the seasonal marker release) but I would have not bought them at full price. They have not dried out on me, but I store them on their sides. One thing to be mindful of is the kind of paper you use, of course watercolor paper is the best. I use Strathmore Smooth Bristol 300 series for like 95% of what I do, and it does kind of wash out, it's not the best when it comes to keeping their vibrancy. Something I discovered was that the Distress Makers can be really great skin tones, like tattered rose for example. I prefer the seasonal colors of the Distress Markers when I use them; I do not use the markers like I thought I would though. I'm an art/craft supply junkie, but I would have not bought the seasonal markers if the regular release sucked for me. Just sharing my experience!

      thefrugalcrafter Lindsay we were using Strathmore imperial WC paper. The colors did blend if you got them super wet but takes a long time and leaves a noticeable line. No where near the instant blend you were getting or the company’s demo video. Is there a difference using a water pen VS just a brush and water (that’s what we used)

    I am curious to know if either the Specturm Aqua or these Zig Real Brush pens are refillable? (or plan on releasing refills) or if the nibs can be changed out if, like in the instance of your Aqua being frayed b/c of using on rubber stamps?

    • @path6741

      Grace Roberts Copics are kind of the best professional permanent markers that have been around for years. They have replaceable tips, refill ink is available for them, they come in every color you can think of and the cost is quite high. Since they are so good any other marker gets compared to them. They are alcohol based as lismr40 said, so they can't be blended with water but have a blender pen that uses alcohol to blend somewhat. Lindsay has some videos on how to blend them.
