    At last I have found my squeeze box and thank you Daddy Long Les for making the explanation so easy. I bought mine in brand new condition compete with case for $25, in a curiosity store in Redlands Ca. I love the sound and want to get to play some old Tyrolean folk music. This is the first site that has really opened it up for me.

    I absolutely enjoyed your reviews and demos. You're great at this. Thank you so much honestly. Mine fell apart and need to buy a new one but I have no idea these days. Again, much appreciated.

    Great video. I mainly play guitar, but years ago I picked up a concertina in a music shop on a whim. Lately I've gotten into stuff like the Clancy Brothers and sea music so I've been wanting to learn how to play. This will help me out a lot. Thanks!

    Very helpful and pleasant to watch! I play fiddle, recorders, and harp, and was just wondering about trying concertina. This was informative. Thank you.

    That one looks a lot like my East German concertina, which I bought in 1970.

    I'd picked up an identical Homer (a lot cheaper by the way) and I've long put off learning anything about it.

    Thanks for the blog! The first shown looks like a Scholer Concertina, produced in the former GDR (East Germany). Perhaps it is sold in GB using another name? I also have a Scholer in G/D tuning, but it's not the same model. Now I try to learn playing...

    Great video(s)! I recently learnd how to play diatonic melodeon, but I don't own one, and as unemployed, I really can't afford one. Anyway even the smallest classic button melodeon is too large to carry to the nature over the campfire, so I decided to buy any small concertina (I love the size, I love the hexagonial shape, and of Course, I love the sound). Also I found a cheap wooden concertina for approx. $200 USD which I will soon be able to afford (it's real instrument, no toy, but I'm not sure of quality - never mind, I am a beginner, I will upgrade later).
    Last thought - blog it would be if you'd write an article. The video version of blog is always called VLOG theese days.

    Thank you for posting this video! I just got a 2nd hand concertina for my son, he absolutely wanted it for Christmas (??) but I could not figure out how this is supposed to be played. It's a Hohner, very similar to the one you are presenting... Too bad it only has 20 buttons but I suppose it's ok for a beginner.

    I love my little 20-button C/G 'tina.I keep her in serviceable shape, and she always sings for me. She lacks a lot of the notes people seem to think are absolutely essential for some tunes, but I've found that a chord that blends in will usually smooth over a jarring lack of a note, similar to the same kind of trick that one does on a harmonica. I've been able to jam and in some cases even perform on tunes in A, C, G,, and often rather (admittedly) truncated versions of B and D, though the latter tends to be a bit limited.
    A 30 button Lachenal or Wheatstone woudl be epic! But I doubt I'll ever have the funds for such, so I'll keep honking along with my 20...

    • @daddylongles
      @daddylongles  3 года назад

      Part of the fun with the 20 button is coaxing stuff out of it that it really shouldn't be able to produce and fudging those missing notes.

    Hi, I was recently gifted an Anglo concertina, and I don't really understand the different notes that play when you pull and push and the strange key layout (I'm used to seeing a standard C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C on instruments). How should I start learning, and is there order in the madness that is the key layout?

    I am left-handed, so have a challenging time learning instruments. Can you play the melody with the left hand on a duet concertina, since button notes on both sides are identical?

    • @daddylongles
      @daddylongles  4 года назад

      I think that the left hand side of a duet is an octave lower than the right and therefore more suited to bass accompaniment. You'd have to try one first!

    Thank you so much! I am a girl with very small hands and I wanted to play the squeezebox. do you think my small hands can get in the way of playing. I am very petite and I have trouble playing the piano when it's more than an octave in notes. Do you think that this instrument could work with my small hands?

    So there ARE repeating notes on adjacent buttons! I thought my cheap concertina was defective for a bit.

    • @googleuser3163
      @googleuser3163 3 года назад

      Yes it's intentional, some notes appear on both push and pull scales.

    Ive been looking around trying to see if I can find a similarly priced anglo concertina to learn to play. Unfortunately I don't have much of a budget right now and the only ones I can find for sale are upwards of $150. If anyone knows where I can find a concertina cheap I would be very grateful for the help.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Hello! I downloaded the tab sheet for "go tell aunt rhody" from your awesome website and there it says "notes in capitals are on the c row and those in lower case are g row" but the notes are all written in Capitals? It's a little bit confusing how you wrote it down :(

      Stagi concertinas can be ok if you get a good one. Make sure you try before you buy if you possibly can! The Hohner D40 in my video is a perfectly acceptable beginner's concertina.

    I like this gentlman,s approach to teaching, but he made the same mistake I did when I started playing Anglo 40 years ago, getting a cheap 2row. He has got a few bob, so should have bought a 3row from the start. I as a very old man am having great diffuclty applying myself to a 3 row.🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐

      Hi John,
      Good point. If you follow my videos through you will see that I had a decent three row just a few weeks after this!

    • @daddylongles
      @daddylongles  4 года назад +2

      If you hear two notes at the same time on the push or on the pull yes, you have a problem. If you hear one note on the pull and another on the pull that's correct.

    Hi there, I have bought a very similar concertina to the rossetti rambler, but it's horribly out of tune, like yourself I paid about 30 quid for it, was just wondering if you knew (could recommend) anyone who might be able to repair it, and indeed if it is worth repairing it?
