We always sang this song When we were children so sad to grow up and learn what the song is really about God bless tipperary and the men Who fought for liberty;
They're great men in their day. Many more great men if only we had them today like East Tyrone. Time will tell 🙏 Ireland is still unfree how sad hunger strikers bless them.
Great young men and women did rally again. Against all odds. And we're betrayed by their leadership. Again. Road signs in two languages...is that why they died?
My Great Uncle Francie Chambers was a part of the West Mayo Flying Column, and my grandfather was from Tipperary…I have a pic of Francie with the boys and their rifles…Oh how I miss them all…
Great men and women of Ireland pity we don't have them anymore our people are ruled by Europe and by our banks that we own God bless our brave volunteers rip
The bravest of the brave those lads. Now to see how this EU situation plays out, but we’ll not have lads like these again. We could all live for their names
Oh my good god!! I’m learning my heritage I’ve just come across my gt granduncle his name was Dinny Lacey all of sudden this thing hit me straight through my soul and I feel this strange feeling inside me of sadness love and rage! Oh my god. I was born and live in New Zealand, hello there my name is Jamie de Lacey-Parkes and thankyou for preserving them
My grandfather, Joseph O’Sullivan, was in the early days circa 1917 of the flying column out of Cork. He died young after 5 children from my grandmother from Donegal. She, an O’Donnell, lost most of her brothers to the Brits near Derry that were IRA. She raised me after coming to America w 5 children. There always was a sadness that could never be spoken of, but as thick as syrup. We hung on to our faith that kept us going, which is sad to see, that Ireland has largely abandoned, after all the sacrifices made by these brave men & their strong women of faith.
@@maureencastillo6278 yeah my relatives have a similar story. Only my family refuses to talk about it. But the Brits hung a lot of my family for treason and rebellion, so they were involved in the fenian uprising and the RA likely
@@maureencastillo6278 faith in god is it u speak about. Yes sadly I see in this generation it barely exists, children aren't even thought about it in schools but rather thought that it's ok to change from a man into a woman etc. Strong faith can become a threat to governments therefore this is no coincidence.
Very informative. As an American, I wonder if any of my countrymen and women would be as dedicated as the Irish Patriots who fought for their ideals, freedom and country. Probably not.Anyway, Thanks for posting this Very enlightening
Hi Paul I would suggest the book "Guerilla Day's in Ireland" by Tom Barry. He served with the Royal Artillery in the British Army during WW1 and when he came back home he joined the IRA and would become the most successful guerilla commander in the field at the tender age of 22. I would also recommend the movies "The Wind that Shakes the Barley", "Michael Collins", "A Nightingale Falls", "Shake Hands with the Devil", "The Last September". They all have an Irish War of Independence theme. At it's height the Crown Force presence in Ireland was estimated at 75,000 to 80,000. This was almost 60,000 regular troops,almost 16,000 police,added to Royal Marines,RAF personnel and Royal Navy personnel. The IRA could only put into the field at it's height only 2,500 to 3,000 riflemen. The IRA tactics would be copied and expanded upon by later freedom fighters that were involved in anti colonial and anti imperial conflicts. Ho Chi Minh admired the IRA and the British paid them the highest compliment by forming the SOE and commandos on similar lines.
@@johnroche7541 great stuff john..apparently che Guevara chose tom Barry's book to train his men with and Barry's tactics in crossbarry is thaught as standard practice by military's all over the world now. He was an incredible commander
@@joesoap1960 Thank you for your comment. In the list of movies with an Irish War of Independence theme I forgot to mention "Fools Of Fortune". It is from the 1990's and stars a young Ian Glen(Game of Thrones). No doubt you have read Meda Ryan's superb biography of Tom Barry titled "Tom Barry- Irish Freedom Fighter". The Irish TV Channel TG 4 made a documentary about Tom Barry,Ernie O'Malley and Dan Breen. They are made in the native Irish language but have English subtitles. Tom Barry gave a very interesting interview with the Irish Independent newspaper in the 1970's giving his opinion of what would have happened if there was no 11th July 1921 Truce. He states what the IRA would have done. It is very interesting. Stay safe in these challenging times.
I had the pleasure of meeting General Tom Barry and on that encounter proved to me the honorable man he still was many years after his Flying Column days .The meeting was accidental and for reasons that might be embarrassing for some of the persons involved I shall refrain from naming and shaming them .Let it be said that they did not portray themselves in glory.However Barry in his own way put the principle offender in my view in his box and showed him up for the Kow tow shoneen he was. At this time he was living over Woodford Bournes on the corner of Patrick St .
Met him also in Fitzgerald s park Cork ,and Tom Kelleher in Derry as an old man at Easter Sunday still guests and anti good Friday agreement commemoration
Emotionally yes....but really? Read Ernie O'Malley, " On another man's wound". They suffered. How they suffered. Remarkable people, men and women. Never a thought for themselves. Unlike leaders now.
Isn't history unreal these brave men badly equiped and hunted like dogs day and night called terriosts but only wanted freedom from an empire and won their freedom by giving their lives just goes to show you stand up and fight for what's right
And sadly this song tells the story that they were hunted by their own in the end the free state army who were with these men in the Ira before the treaty but these men rebelled against the treaty that's the saddest part of this story. The free state army executed founding members of the Ira who were part of the first revolution against the British empire.
