Oh my gosh... My grandfather was from Islandeady, John Moran, had a couple of forges in Co Mayo where he worked as a blacksmith & farrier. He got a service medal "for services rendered" - the rumour in the family was he ran guns from Glasgow at one point, and had IRA soldiers billeted on his property. I'm told he left under a black cloud in 1924 having married his older brother Frank's sweetheart, Brigid Morrison. She used the threaten him when he'd get out of hand, saying "I'll tell them what you did!" He was not a nice guy, his kids knew his wrath well, so the thought of what he might have done is the source of quite some speculation.
@@Skiamakhos John Moran married Bridget Morrison, 23 Feb 1927, Islandeady parish church. Not sure about your “black cloud” theory as Best Man at the wedding was John’s brother, Frank Moran. Hi Ruari, I'm John O'Grady and my Mom is Mary Duffy, one of Johnnie Duffy's daughters. He was a real hero. I'd always pester him about the wartime and what was it like and finally he told me this: You'll be laying out in a field all night in the cold rain so bring newspapers to wrap around your arms and legs and that will help you keep warm. Some war story, huh? I love him and respect him even more for this. No derring-do, no adventure, just a really unpleasant experience out in the cold and dark, and deadly dangerous as well. He did time in prison for being a Drill Instructor but once Ireland got its freedom he got out and beat his swords into ploughshares, then built a beautiful house in Knockrooskey and built a great family too. I will always love him and Grandmother. BTW, Have you ever seen photos of them when they were young and courting? A beautiful couple and so obviously in love with each other. Sharp dressers too! Also, if you go to 21:20 you will see Grandfather, bottom row, 3rd from left. You can see his face in this photo. His face used to be hidden in shadow but some digital magic happened and there he is! They even talk about the photo at 1:02:53 . A question: At 29:26 , is that the top of Altamount Street where the railroad track used to go over Altamount? Because that is where we lived, next to Mrs. Reidy. It's off-camera to the left. I don't remember it being called the Red Bridge, maybe it got that name later? Thank you for posting Ruari. Excellent doco that gives good details of the sacrifices made in just one part of Ireland for Irish freedom. In 1905, Norway was ruled by Sweden. Norway decided they wanted out. Sweden had a short think about it and yeah, okay. No one died! And Sweden didn't keep northern Norway. In 1916, Ireland says it wants out, the Brits had a think and nah, lets have a years long war instead. Much like China with Tibet and Russia with Ukraine. Canada however has organised an entire constitutional process to peacefully deal with the day that Quebec ever votes to leave Canada. Oddly enough, unlike some people, they're not planning to choose violence and death as their solution..

Very interesting. Thanks. My own family left Castlebar in 1849. But , as I say, still interesting to see what happened in Mayo in later years. Never understood why England just doesn't get the hell out of Ireland. So many years of needless bloodshed and tragedy .
Ireland, a country of gentle and kindly people yet it is a country that suffered from invasions, savage attacks and brutal treatment from its nearest neighbor Britain for 800 years. The powers that be in Britain had the deepest hatred of the Irish yet when they came to Ireland they loved the country better than their own lands. The British establishment committed genocide in Ireland by stealing the people's homes, their lands and food stocks which they shipped over to Britain to feed its o and helped to cause millions of people to suffer and die from starvation, I wonder how those people explained themselves to God on their day of judgment.
It's a good thing that such judgment need not tax our minds, then. That way we can all spend our lives in compassionate conciliation which fuels both understanding and peace. ☘️🇮🇪☘️✌🏼
Is Genocide the murder of many people ?.The Ira had many ruthless murderers they commited genocide on protestants in the South and in area's like South Armagh. In the border counties many protestants were assassinated by coward's who hid as these men went about day's of work the assasins will be judged in time .
@@blueneptune825 What word "Genocide"because that's been commited on protestant's for hundreds of year's in Ireland and in Europe. The famine of the mid 1840s was a potato blight all over Europe not just ireland so many think the British murdered people intentionally that's just not true.
You been up North james in some of the rougher estates the people you saw behind a terrorist's coffin are NOT kind and gentle people i dare say you saw the two british army corporal's horrific murders and what led to that a madman throwing grenades and shooting people in the Milltown cemetery attack.Ireland has lot's of kind gentle people but the North had been subjected to some of the worst violence and Murders of over 3000 soul's many innocent human beings and many who were always going to end up dead.
Guys this is an historical documentary told from a certain viewpoint but interesting and informative just the same. It should not be looked at as an IRA Recruiting Video and some of the comments made by certain folk on this forum both pro and anti makes me sad. Remember two traditions not one in Ireland particularly in the North. Parity of esteem. Most of the prods like me are proud Celts just as much as any other Irishman.
Most of the prods are proud celts!? Are you drunk or insane? You should take a trip up the Shankill in Belfast and go into one of the pubs there and tell the lads that. They will literally take your life!
I agree. The thing you might not know is early on in the video the narrator states that the whole independence movement had its roots in the young irelanders all the founding members of that organisation were predominantly protestant. He also mentions the 1798 rebellion, most of the leaders back then were prodestent. Not so much in mayo mabey but definitely in antrim where they rose.
Also, Charles Stuart parnell, wolfe tone, and many more Irish heroes were protestant. None of this matters anyway after a couple of decades after the war of independence we betrayed these men and gave it away to join a bigger union where we have even less power and are ruled over by unelected dictators.
That’s a strange stance to take. IRA Recruiting video? It’s more like History for history sake. Our history. It happened throughout the country & it’s important to remember. Good documentary 👍🏻🇮🇪
Will watch this later on good history lesson we love Ireland and people. We all need to know our history especially Ireland it’s important that we learn. We’re not Irish but respect the Irish and Ireland and peace may it last for my life time. You’ll always have bad people in every Nation but Ireland is the best in the world 🌎 and people music love it.GodBless.🎼🎼🇮🇪🌈🌈🌈🌈☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️
Funny thing is that = = It was military training that many of them had in the British army that made them so effective. Great Irish Freedom Fighters = = We will see their like again.

@@eugenemcgovern9703I sometimes wonder what the fighters for Irish independence would think of Ireland having to vote twice on the Lisbon treaty because they hadn't voted right first time.

We may thank Diarmuid MacMurchada for fleeing Ireland and seeking the assistance of king HenryII in France, . He opened the door to Strongbow , and the rest is history . Indeed the Roman Catholic church , also commanded Henry to basically quash the barbarians upon the island of Ireland. So when one looks back , we were betrayed by an Irish man , and the established church. So we have been under the tyranny of many , and during the purges of the Elizabethan rule , the Duke of Ormond an Irishman also, sent as a way of his pledge to the empire, the heads of many Irish men, women and children. Ireland has been ruled by much and alas the Irish themselves betrayed one another , the Spanish can account for the failed rebellion , owing to Irish betraying Irish. Is our island any different today. Politicians filling their pockets, whilst thousands are homeless . As they say, it is what it is.
Yes go ahead and gripe and whinge and carry on - these are other stories of brave men and brave women and you have to jump in with your sour grievances. I’m sure the men of the flying column would have been enthralled with your knowledge and suggested you join them, such a patriot! Why not go up to Gavarghy road and hector them?
@@beyondnatural9155 If you had read my reply , it was not griping or whining. Dont assume you know anything about me or my desp understanding of the history of Ireland. So empty vessels make much noise . Noli propter contumeliam, qui te devorabit intellectualiter.
The Pope was English at the time who gave Henry the green light which likely has a lot to do with how this all got started. Without his blessing it is hard to see how this went ahead full force.
It’s great to see something produced in modern Ireland that isn’t childishly anti-Catholic. Those running RTE etc should take a leaf from this balanced approach.
The IRA man with proficient markmanship skills was James Flagherty who had served with the Connaught Rangers in WW1. Some sources state it was him who shot and killed DI Stevenson who was driving the first Crossley Tender therefore stoppong it in the KZ(Kill Zone). Also some state he also shot the 3 members of the Crown Forces who tried to get the Lewis machine gun into action. It was him who also opened up with the captured Lewis on the roof of the cottage where the surviving members of the Crown Forces had taken refuge forcing them to surrender.

Forced exile by the f.s.
Many Irish hid on USA using Scottish identity
They probably had to with the All the Anti Irish and Anti Catholic Discrimination there.
British still there that is a fact as to be said
Very interesting.
@@LeggieGlasgow you may want to understand the gravity and weight of such a word before applying it in a discourse.
Aye we are all Irish.
We are nothing special, people are people the world over
Brilliant great men and women what ever happened to Ireland may they rest in peace
Wonderful video.
Funny thing is that = = It was military training that many of them had in the British army that made them so effective.
Great Irish Freedom Fighters = = We will see their like again.
Now if mayo could only win the Sam maguire lol
"To Win Just Once..."
True
We need them now
Anyone know the song playing at the 5 minute mark?
Mise Éire : Muscailt by Seán Ó Ríada

Meanwhile our present politicians are saying “sovereignty is outdated” Martin, Irish Taoiseach and who is accepting being ruled by the EU who are working for an unelected totalitarian cabal, the WEF.
Yes and the South under eu rule
@@eugenemcgovern9703I sometimes wonder what the fighters for Irish independence would think of Ireland having to vote twice on the Lisbon treaty because they hadn't voted right first time.
Welcome to Nwo.
The only way you could become a member of a flying column,is to be named pat tom or mikey, they were very strict about this, thats why tom barry led the west cork flying column, sure they had to do something, boredom was a killer.
I will soon have my Irish passport.
Now look at us I’m sure our leaders would’ve stayed in bed if they seen
Ireland 🇮🇪 today.
And don’t get me started on the GAA.
Well, we can't say we haven't been given ample opportunity to forgive ourselves and others. And what a powerful weapon forgiveness is.☘️🇮🇪💚🇮🇪☘️
Yes go ahead and gripe and whinge and carry on - these are other stories of brave men and brave women and you have to jump in with your sour grievances.
I’m sure the men of the flying column would have been enthralled with your knowledge and suggested you join them, such a patriot!
Why not go up to Gavarghy road and hector them?

If you had read my reply , it was not griping or whining.
I thought Thomas Meagher designed the Irish Tri colour 🤔 later than 1848 ?

Sadly true

No, that's Mulcahy, and he was appointed IRA Chief of Staff, 1918
And look at our country 100 years later , its hardly irish anymore,

Yes Joe and the most talented people of Ireland, where have they gone to?
Alot of people should read the history of Ireland. The pope made the English king or Queen over lord of Ireland. That's why the English were there
