It is a story of tragedy, of loss, of bravery and guile, and ultimate victory. We follow the exploits of the F...
Look at Ireland now ... God help the next generation... God save Ireland long live our falling heroes
Typical Malthusian right winger. Logically being as right wing as you are, you fully support British policy in Ireland between 1845-1853. That's the thicko logic of neo-nazi policy regards Ireland, you must support the policies of the Great Hunger. The policy you support today is the exact same as British policy in 1845-53, that of "there's far too many feckless scroungers living off the state, the blight is nothing more than God's justice on evil".
I am an English Unionist Protestant and all that that means. Dublin will shit themselves if they ever take control of the 6 counties . They couldn’t cope with the backlash . They don’t want it
Alot of people should read the history of Ireland. The pope made the English king or Queen over lord of Ireland. That's why the English were there
Brilliant great men and women what ever happened to Ireland may they rest in peace
I suspect they might return yet, the way things are going !!!
Crowns are a Dime a Dozen these days for what thier worth.///As All Evidence Presents.
Think i Can't? YES I CAN!!!....Bullys Go Home!!!
Try Actually taking Good Care of your own peoples Britian...For the First Time Ever!
Britian can't keep its own house in order...and has No Business Attempting to Deny The Rightful Independance of Any Nation Beyond its own Borders
Great 🇮🇪👍
"Others" who founded the Abbey Theatre include Lady Augusta Gregory! Not included because she was a woman?
What a fantastic piece of history. Has anyone got a copy that isn't skipping? Thanks for uploading!!
Brilliant documentary! Well done to everyone involved!
Keep Britain Irish
It’s great to see something produced in modern Ireland that isn’t childishly anti-Catholic. Those running RTE etc should take a leaf from this balanced approach.
Incredible to watch this. A whole nation arises to fight for freedom. So many heroes. I am ashamed to admit this, as an Irish American--I had no idea the fight for freedom was so widespread and shared by so many. This is a must-watch video for those related to anyone experiencing 800 years of slavery to the British. This history must be shouted out.
Do you have any connections with Chicago, I have a family connection, but have lost the address, her name was Helen married to a West mayo man My grandmother's cousin
Wow , Thank you , this is informative & fascinating, John Quinn my old neighbour & truely lovely gentleman from Castlebar St finally got his day in the Sun , He loved to give a tour of his collection & at the time perhaps I didn't realise the great significance. Well done everyone involved in this Wonderful Production.
Thank you for a very fine documentary. I e-mailed my brothers and sister about it.
My grandad was born in Killavally in 1905. This documentary couldn't be more relevant. 💪💚🤍🧡 ps my great grandad was John Gibbons but he'd have been 55 in 1921 so I doubt it's the same lad as in the column.
The IRA man with proficient markmanship skills was James Flagherty who had served with the Connaught Rangers in WW1. Some sources state it was him who shot and killed DI Stevenson who was driving the first Crossley Tender therefore stoppong it in the KZ(Kill Zone). Also some state he also shot the 3 members of the Crown Forces who tried to get the Lewis machine gun into action. It was him who also opened up with the captured Lewis on the roof of the cottage where the surviving members of the Crown Forces had taken refuge forcing them to surrender.
Wasn't Redmond an awful fool.....great documentary. Loved it
And so today we continue to revive our language, our sports, our music and our deep appreciation for the men and women who suffered and gave their lives willingly for future generations of Irish people to live in peace. I am deeply grateful for their sacrifices. I am a free Irish man today
Years ago a friend of the English ‘persuasion’ mentioned ‘the Irish problem’. I told him there would not have been a problem had the English not invaded. The conversation quickly ended.
I think "Flying Column" is IRA-speak for "bushwackers".
They were first rate light Infantry units that followed principles of military doctrine. 1) They would travel on foot to and from POC(points of contact) with the enemy. 2) Engage in CQB(Close Quarter Battle) with the enemy. 3)Organise sound KZ(Kill Zones) against enemy forces. 4) Conduct competent E & E (escape and evasion) manoeuvres.
Superb! Does justice to a story of justice. But then I'm biased. My father was Brendan Geraghty, son of Michael Geraghty and Anne Derrig of Westport.
Excellent
The only way you could become a member of a flying column,is to be named pat tom or mikey, they were very strict about this, thats why tom barry led the west cork flying column, sure they had to do something, boredom was a killer.
Wonder if wood have been friends we've the Germans if won the war
Mick drivel.
They would turn in their graves if they saw what has become of the country they fought and died for. A post modern dystopia. With sinn fein leading the way with its cultural marksist idoligy.
Thank You, Brilliant.
I wonder would those great people, think of our country now, with the plantation that makes the Ulster plantation look like a tea party, it's sad to see our country inviting in migrants to replace our native people, and no one is shouting stop
They would turn in their graves if they could see what is happening to Mayo today as the native population and culture being replaced by hoards of foreigners in a mass plantation with the help of our own government and politicians selling our country to the highest bidder for profit.
50 million people born outside Ireland who are eligible for Irish citizenship on behalf of a grandparent born in Ireland. Would you refer to those 50 million as "hoards of foreigners"? If it weren't for those immigrants of years past, the IRA would never have gained a foothold in America or any money for guns. You'd still be British if it weren't for Irish immigrants feeling a strong affinity with Ireland.
27:25 jesus christ. Were these women the ones risking death in the war? These things always have to have women shoehorned into them. Give me a break.
I'm an English fellow, though not living in the UK at the time. Perhaps some some 35 years ago I was offered. by what I can only describe now in later years as an Irish patriot, it was a paperback edition of Thomas Flanagan's exquisite depiction of the 1798 upraising in Mayo: "The Year of The French" Many many years later, some thirty perhaps from first reading, I traced down a hardback copy of this previous masterpiece of Irish literature. How times change; tough I now live in the Republic, my proffering of this book, to not unintelligent friends, seems to fall unappreciated, for reasons I can't imagine. I despair, of Ireland or my circle of friends, I know not what? Perhaps I should ask, modern day Ireland? Or perhaps my circle of friends?
As someone once said ‘romantic Ireland is dead and gone’..very true! And modern Ireland is hardly recognizable as Ireland at all..thanks for sharing the title of the 1798 rising book, I’ll try to track one down ✊🇮🇪
@@rupowell2821 Yes do try, it would be well worth the effort. The hardback wasn't particularly cheap, at all at all.
Nowadays the truth, scares people, in my experience they become aggressive when offered proof of Irish history. @@teddyshepherd2854
Did'nt RTE(Irish TV) make a TV series based on the book "The Year of The French" back in the 1980's?
That's Mayo, Ballina, where my ancestors came from. ✊🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮❤️🇨🇺🇻🇳🇻🇪🇵🇸🇿🇦❤️
Hon the Na .
I would to know how you guys feel right know, with how our country and culture is being decimated???
What is the legacy of these patriots? Soon, very soon the Irish will be a minority in Ireland. Young girls having their breasts removed in the name of cultural Marxism. Shut up your racist if you open your mouth…..Drag queens reading for children in your local library. If these patriots could see what is happening in Ireland today they would curse the nationalist of today who are letting it happen without lifting a finger to stop it.
One of tht most in depth accounts of this time in mayo well done to the man
Thank you for this excellent film.
Very well done. Historical time for Ireland. Proud of grandfather Johnnie Duffy and his brother Paddy and all who fought for our freedom
Hi Ruari, I'm John O'Grady and my Mom is Mary Duffy, one of Johnnie Duffy's daughters. He was a real hero. I'd always pester him about the wartime and what was it like and finally he told me this: You'll be laying out in a field all night in the cold rain so bring newspapers to wrap around your arms and legs and that will help you keep warm. Some war story, huh? I love him and respect him even more for this. No derring-do, no adventure, just a really unpleasant experience out in the cold and dark, and deadly dangerous as well. He did time in prison for being a Drill Instructor but once Ireland got its freedom he got out and beat his swords into ploughshares, then built a beautiful house in Knockrooskey and built a great family too. I will always love him and Grandmother. BTW, Have you ever seen photos of them when they were young and courting? A beautiful couple and so obviously in love with each other. Sharp dressers too! Also, if you go to 21:20 you will see Grandfather, bottom row, 3rd from left. You can see his face in this photo. His face used to be hidden in shadow but some digital magic happened and there he is! They even talk about the photo at 1:02:53 . A question: At 29:26 , is that the top of Altamount Street where the railroad track used to go over Altamount? Because that is where we lived, next to Mrs. Reidy. It's off-camera to the left. I don't remember it being called the Red Bridge, maybe it got that name later? Thank you for posting Ruari. Small world!
Hi @@ivanvanogre-nd1sw Nice to hear from you and best wishes to Aunty Mary and all the Chicago relations.
@@ruairiduffy5488Thank you and best wishes to you and yours as well, John.
Very interesting. Thanks. My own family left Castlebar in 1849. But , as I say, still interesting to see what happened in Mayo in later years. Never understood why England just doesn't get the hell out of Ireland. So many years of needless bloodshed and tragedy .
Just learned through DNA, Mayo is my ancestry. So impressive. I hope to see Ireland someday. 💚🤍🧡
Great men and women 🙋♂️🇮🇪 Look what is on control today, Russian has banned Michael Martin and the long fellow with the glasses, a terrible pity we could not ban them from this island also. "Up The Rebels"
Fantastic documentary thank you
God save a united 🇮🇪 ireland
O’Duffy at 16:10 rather than Mulcahy as mentioned
No, that's Mulcahy, and he was appointed IRA Chief of Staff, 1918
Thank you Joe and Tommy without your time and input to this Fantastic Documentary history would be lost for ever. Keep up the good work. " IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN.
