    I’ll be honest: I kind of assumed it was illegal to punt twice, but without actually knowing the rule, I would never have said that.
    Also, even if it had been a penalty, I would have called it a smart play, because the other team would basically have to either accept the outcome of the play in order to enforce the penalty, or have them rekick. It prevented a disastrous play where the Rams get the ball in scoring range.

    • @zanti4132
      @zanti4132 9 месяцев назад +5

      Considering the punt was downed at the 10, accepting the penalty is the obvious choice, but you make a good point. The punter intentionally taking the penalty gives his team a second chance to get the play right, and the other team doesn't take over 25 yards from the endzone. (That's assuming the second punt was even illegal, and apparently the rule book does not preclude it.)

    • @danielhoang289
      @danielhoang289 9 месяцев назад +16

      Not quite. In your hypothetical scenario had it been illegal, penalty would be 5 yards AND loss of down. Which would be a turnover on downs, so no rekick. The "loss of down" is there on "illegal forward pass" or "intentional grounding" penalties to prevent the qb from intentionally taking a penalty to get another play. So you wouldn't be able to re-kick.
      That said, it's legal so this is moot

    The 2nd punt is called a checkside kick or snap kick in Australia. Used to get a U shape bend in flight. A skill needed for AFL because of the oval dimensions of the field

    • @dampaul13
      @dampaul13 Год назад +5

      Not a checkside kick, champ.
      And a checkside and snap are the complete opposite things.

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 9 месяцев назад

      A snap kick is usually off the inner portion of the top of the boot,
      Whereas a Checkside Kick (sometimes called a banana kick by the illiterate) is much more off the outer portion of the boot.
      In either case a spin is imparted on the ball to cause it to bend in its flight path.

    The Aussie in him probably kicked in (no pun intended) and he kicked the ball on instinct. In Australian football that’s one of the main ways the ball is driven down field, and that’s a part of the reason why so many Australians come to the US to play in the NFL as punters and kickers.
