- Tom Selleck won an Emmy for his portrayal of Thomas Magnum, a charming private detective who lives in Hawaii on the estate of an absentee millionaire. Though a bit of a rascal, Magnum investigates his cases with skill, deftly moving about an island that is luxurious, exotic, and sometimes dangerous. Successfully blending doses of action, mystery, irreverent comedy, and poignant drama, this series became one of the biggest hits in television history and afforded Selleck and his characterization iconic status.

Speaking of the reboot Magnum Pi, it was announced the show will be cancelled after this season due to the Covid pandemic and the Writer’s strike that is happening right now, 6/2023… too bad, but the writing was getting bland and not appealing anymore, even with the intimate relationship Thomas and Julia were having… that may have been the death kneel of the show.

The usage of gun in the original is alarming. But, it is understandable. It's the 80's. Nowadays people won't tolerate such behaviour.

I watched every episode as a kid. Show was the jam!! BTW... love how he lays her on the ground behind the Ferrari gently, but then forgets all about her as he peels out and spits dirt. LMAO

I met Tom and John early 1980's right outside of the gate entrance to the right of "Robins Nest. Tom was very quiet and John was very nice. Both signed our Crew Caps. They were filming "Foiled Again". We hung out for a couple days of filming and also met some of the Film Crew, very nice people. Blaine went and got us Magnum PI Crew Caps, and Invited us to hang out with some of the crew after filming, to meet up for a couple drinks at a local spot in Honolulu. Was a fun time I won't ever forget. 😁

....unlike the current Magnum PI/reboot....Selleck's "Magnum" took his lumps and bruises. Wasn't an untouchable Jason Bourne type (even Jason Bourne wasn't untouchable...in his fight scenes)...
Current (@ NBC) iteration seems closer to *Moonlighting* - and even Bruce (wish him well) was not untouchable !

I don't think the Magnum PI we're watching today in 2023 even compares tot hat. :)) The writing is ridiculous....they forgot about "the lads" in I thinkt he 2nd season, forgot about TC's Island Hopper business...heh....and they made "Juiliette Higgins " his partner...the show is calld MAGNUM PI. :) The original was MILES apart better....they had many "firsts" too in prime time TV e.g. first show to use a Ferrari, for the main charater to look into the camera and grin...heh...Sellect is 6'4....the main character can't be the short one in the case hehe...as on the current version...
What made the OG Magnum Pi was Tom Selleck wanted his character, Thomas Sullivan Magnum to be a man who made mistakes and wasn’t perfect, as a hero the producers wanted him to be ‘James Bond-like’ and to win all the girls every time… glad Selleck got what he wanted, as he had Magnum be more relatable to us, a Man who can get hurt, but be not a total wimp.

A note to whoever is publishing these clips...These titles make it very difficult to follow which episode the clips are from. This issue will compound as season 2, 3 and onward are added. A notation of the episode title and season/order would be really useful for anyone not very familiar with the show (to the extent of being able to guess from the thumbnail).
Really nice to have high quality clips up, but full episodes would really be fantastic. Finding DVD releases of the different seasons is quite difficult in some cases. It's an iconic show, and after 40 years, it would be great to have them widely available for people to look back on, and for new fans to discover. Thanks so much.
