- Jennifer Ehle wins the 1996 BAFTA award for Best Actress in a TV show for her performance as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, beating Helen Mirren, Geraldine James and Juliet Stevenson.
Jennifer Ehle, then 24, starred alongside Colin Firth in what is regarded by many as the definitive version of Pride & Prejudice.
The BAFTA ceremony took place on 23 April 1996 in London's Palladium Theatre. Jennifer Ehle's award is presented by Stephen Fry.
25 years later and she is still the unrivalled definitive Lizzie.
Everything about that adaptation was sublime.
Perfectly deserved BAFTA. Jennifer was and remains the best Elizabeth Bennet ever! Her performance is immaculate! Thank you, Jennifer, thank you so much!
jeingallaher absolutely true
She brought Pride and Prejudice to life. I've never watched a more enthralling and endearing Elizabeth Bennet ever again.
I like her version better than Keira. Although Keira's also splendid too. I guess Keira played a more dramatic & romantic Lizzy, while Jennifer played a relatable and witty Lizzy. I love them both .❤
She definitely is
She brought Elizabeth to life perfectly. Extremely well deserved.
It was an astonishing performance. She IS Lizzy. It was sweet of her to use her English accent when accepting the award.
She's adorable...so shy and modest...she practically ran off the stage.
Jennifer Car Lol, she did..I think she thought that she didn't deserve it. It's great that she's modest about it though.
@@cece4226 & Jennifer Car - Guys, she ran off the stage - literally - because she had difficulty _walking_ in that dress.
She deservd it..
But colin more qualified wth minimal acting..less scenes...lot to emote..and carry everything on his
Shoulders..
But as firth said..it was more difficult to play Lizzie😀😊
She has a truly lovely voice. Feminine, but also with an unusual power and gravitas. Perfect for Elizabeth.
She was and is teh best Elizabeth Bennet! She deserves more than this award for sure. I have watched every adaptation of Pride and prejudice and no one has brought it to life more than she did. Exceptional actress!!
Completely agree!
Absolutely 😀😊
My opinion is Keira Knightly
Keira is good, but Jennifer was perfection.
Well deserved award, nothing to say, but Colin Firth should have won the BAFTA too for leading actor in Pride&Prejudice, he was absolutely gorgeous and perfect as Mr. Darcy, as he has always been, in so many roles...
Tamarix well i'd say he did win in the end....the role launched him into superstar status and he's won many baftas/golden globes/oscars etc etc since and become one of the most respected and beloved actors in the world.
scamrasc Yes, indeed, but he has one Oscar and he should have won an Academy Award for A Single Man too... And he also deserved more recognition or awards for other very difficult roles (A Month in the Country, Tumbledown, Apartment Zero, Master of the Moor, Trauma, And When Did You Last See Your Father?, The Railway Man, Before I Go To Sleep etc...)
Tamarix
i know he has one oscar - i grouped it in with all the other things he's won too as a collective. tbh some of those projects were sub par. i've always found colin himself to supply a reliably strong performance but a lot of his movies have been some doozy stinkers, and some have been just plain boring or weak (like before i go to sleep for e.g. - strong cast, solid plot....but something still just lacking.). that's not a fault on him, but a fault on the other elements around him, like storytelling/writing/editing/pacing/direction/other performances etc etc, that if any one of or more are weak then it brings the whole thing down. the king's speech was a small little low budget indie film that got everything about it just perfect in the balance - and i think the whole cast just all upped their game as a unit too. everyone was phenomenal. i also think he should have won for a single man too. i'm not a fan of jeff bridges - i've never felt a genuine connection with his acting. it doesn't feel real to me. i feel like i'm watching jeff bridges acting, as opposed to how i feel like i watch colin firth cease being colin firth and *become* king george.....i'm not even sure that makes sense but it's the only way i can describe it....
+Tamarix I agree. His performance is just perfection. This eyes, his expression, way of moving, all just so incredibly convincing ! He's really THE mister Darcy :) . ah could watch it a hundred times !!
+aasigraa He was indeed very convincing in P&P. Actually, I think it's because he was really in love. He had a spark in his eyes that I haven't seen in any of his other films.
The best Elizabeth by far.
Agreed
Yes
And her last thanks was Colin Firth
Extremely well deserved. Her performance stood the test of time. I’m currently greatly enjoying Jennifer Ehle’s reading of Pride and Prejudice here on YT that she began at the start of the Pandemic. Another performance that’s balm to the soul.
The Definitive Elizabeth Bennett & Definitive Pride & Prejudice. My Favourite piece of Television.
She's incredible and she's the best Elizabeth Bennet ,she deserved it Bafta !
She deserved this award and at least a hundred more. She captured my favourite character from my favourite novel so perfectly! She will always be Miss Elizabeth Bennet =)
Congratulations, Jennifer Ehle! The best Elizabeth Bennet ever!
She is and forever will be the best Elizabeth Bennet.
Best version of P & P ever made. Can't be bettered.
I must’ve watched this movie 100 times and I never get sick of it. I’m a big Jane Austen fan and I often wish that she wrote more. Jennifer Ehle played Lizzie perfectly. I’m so happy she won this award. Congratulations Jennifer!!! 🥰😘🥰 love you 😘
I think she certainly would have written more had she lived longer. She died when she was in her early forties.
Jennifer will always be Elizabeth
I must have played Pride and Prejudice a dozen times now, and never tire of it. Jennifer Ehle performance was exceptional!...She brought the character of Elizabeth Bennet alive, a timeless performance!
like the way she called colin firth, full of love
i noticed that too. And he ended with a cheating wife... Go understand men!
They dated while filming P&P...too bad they didn’t stay together. I am sure she wouldn’t have cheated on him like that Italian wife he fell for.
I have just done watching their P&P and so glad to know Jennifer and Colin dated in real life after the filming of series ❤️ How bad they did not end up together.
Thank you for letting me watch Jennifer Ehle .. really deserved it
love her and all the cast Of P&P
In her modern hairstyle Jennifer Ehle still looks stunning
Love how her hair was coiffured n her empire- cut dresses made her into a real English rose.. aah her complexion n the way she tilts her head n lower her eyes shyly…so demure… a real lady of that period of time…..
Beautiful Elizabeth Bennet😍😍😍
Elif Hale p
I do declare she’s awesome! 💖
Haha! That's crazy how she has both a perfect English accent and an perfect American accent (check out her acceptance speech for the Tonys in 2007). I wish I could just switch back and forth. Too cool.
The British accent comes from her mother who is British and the American accent from her Dad who is American.
She thanked Colin Firth!!! yay!
I love her performance in P&P but it's such a shame that she never had the chance to delight us once more with another charming major role like her for Lizzy Bennet.
Javier E. B. I agree!! The real problem is the fact that all hoolywood can do is re-run old shows and do so very poorly. Nothing new. You dont get a kiss till the last 10 seconds in pride and prejudice. Try that in hollywood today? NOT!!!!!
Very sad
I don’t know what you’re on about. She has had many wonderful roles. The main difference with P & P was time. In a series you simply have more time. Jennifer Ehle has no interest whatsoever in fame, impressing anyone, or making a ton of money. She likes to do the work and she has. Onstage, in film, on TV, and she has reserved for herself a space in which to have a LIFE, which she knew was critical because of her wildly talented but wise mother. No shame at all. She does the profession credit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Ehle
She didn't want to capitalize on her fame and performance in Pride & Prejudice. She could have easily and risen to stardom, but she instead she shield away from it.
@@rossen8384 her mother is the gifted actress Rosemary Harris, who had success both in the UK and the US...so, she had no grand illusions or ambitions. Instead, she took roles that appealed to her: Zero Dark Thirty, The Ides of March and The King's Speech among them. During that time, she married and had a family.
In 2000, she won the Tony award for best actress, beating out her mom in the same category.

Mm
Competition at the home front..
Amazing knowledge.. U hv
I watched the series with my mother. I am so happy we both enjoyed it so mutch. She has past away in 2008. But this will always be such a beautiful memory. It was on tv last night on a remote channel in the Netherlands. I had some candles on and enjoyed every minute every minute of it. Excellent cast.
I used to put it on the dvd player inbour house for my own mother Nourah. She passed on in 2013. She really loved the serial.
Lately I've really fallen in love with it myself. I watched it again recently and watch many videos on here about it.
Wonderful story, acting and production.
@@richardtupin7543 ❤❤❤
Did she win any other awards for P&P? Because she definitely should have as the best portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet ever! As well as Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and actually the whole cast - they were fantastic.
She is just beautiful
She looks much more beautiful than in the film (series)
I love the character Lizzie Bennett. Jennifer Ehle is awesome!
She did wonderfully.
Greer Garson was a convincing Elizabeth, but none have been better than Jennifer.
Oh! Thank you, Jane Austin!
I love Jennifer Ehle!!
She's American-English (she was born in the US, but spent much of her child in both the US and England). Also, her mother was English, while her father was American. In fact, she was born in town that's about 45 minutes away from where I live.
Wow!! No wonder she can switch accents
Awww so lovely! And what a nice surprise to be fangirling over Jennifer Ehle and discover my darling Stephen Fry!
Well deserved- the best Elizabeth Bennet ever.
such a good actress.
"I have learned something very important today, and that is to try walking in your dress before you take it home." rotfl!
she so deserved that! love jennifer ehle. i wish she was more well known though:(
That's why I love the Brits: humour and class at its best.
She was originally supposed to be Caitlin Stark on Game of Thrones but turned it down because she had a young daughter.
Yeah that still annoys me. She would have been so much better than the actress they ended up with. Btw it's Catelyn.
What was her reasoning about the young daughter? Do you mean like a newborn baby? Or what?
Kenyan Bunnie I think the fact that she has a daughter, also a son, I think. And the fact that she’d would play in a series with particular content doesn’t sit right with her?
@@monmothma3358 The actress, Michelle Farley, was excellent in that role.
Ha, I watched Pride and Prejudice way back when it first came out, and until today I had no idea that was how you pronounced her surname.
Buffoon1980 Same!
That's exactly why I clicked on this video instead of all the others. And now we know!
LOL at her skipping off at the end
i hope colin firth gets his oscar..
the best p&p version ever!
Самая прекрасная ms.Bennet !
...Ms. Darcy🥰🥰🥰
thank you for putting this up! i love JE!
I didn't see G. James' performance but I did see all the others in that category that year. What a wealth of riches the British TV audiences had and usually have in their programming. I loved Ehle's performance as my fave literary heroine. Ehle and Elizabeth Garvie's approaches in their portrayal of Lizzy Bennet--for me at least--have the most depth and wit.
I think it's because she spent a lot of time being schooled in the UK as well and perhaps filming P&P for so long and dating Colin Firth and living there caused the accent to pop back. I lived in England for a month and I started to develop the accent myself...
The actress who played Caroline Bingley should have won supporting actress!
ELIZABETH 😍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌷💖
Stephen Fry and Colin Firth are the British gods.
Seen them all, the only Liz B to me!
THE FRY. Legend. Love Jennifer !
Jennifer is American. She went to school in england and worked there for several years before returning to th US
so beautiful!
Did anyone notice Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders and Ade Edmondson at 2:49?
She still spoke with an English accent then.
Clipstone Films She was raised partly in the UK and partly in the US
Agree with all the lovely comments about the wonderful Jennifer Ehle, but wasn't Stephen Fry brilliant?
The wig is indeed superb
Geraldine James KILLED IT! Amazing performance! But Jennifer... 😍😍😍 Best Elizabeth Bennet in history! And wait: she wore a wig? When doing P&P? OMG! 😯😯😯
she grew up in both the UK and USA so she switches her accent when it is suitable.
Stephen always makes something special from it :)
Заслуженная награда. Забавно, что фамилия Дженнифер по-русски звучит как предлог OR - Или. При переводе сериала "Гордость и предубеждение" её именуют "Эли".
The best version or P&P
I think she was about to cry when she pronounced "Colin Firth". She rushed off stage. Colin went there with Livia, whom he met around the time he split with Jennifer...
And they were seated next to each other
All of them are so great. A tough decision. I hope the right one.
(cont) Returning to the US. She adapted the British accent while in England and her American accent returned when she returned to the US.
@maryfares28 Depending on her audience. :) Having lived in both the United States and England, both accents are authentic for her. Look up her speech at the 2007 Tonys to hear her speaking in her American accent!
"you can watch me leave" she then ran way at the end lol.
haha i love her, very witty speach!
@frannywaggle Her dad is american, and she's lived here. But her mom is british, and she's lived there too.
Oh steven i love you...i clicked on this for jennifer Ehle..but steven stole the show..
She looked like Gillian Anderson here
just as i thought, she sounds just the same in p & p as in real life
Wow. You really know your BAFTA facts! Thanks! I should watch PS 4 again. :)
I thought Alison Steadman was the best in that whole show.
YES! I loved her role. She was so perfect.
I have seen her do interviews in an American accent. What is her natural speaking accent--English or American?
tubeyhamster it's actually difficult to say as she spent a lot of time in both places due to her mothers' own career obligations, but I suppose one could say, technically American as she was born in North Carolina, and add that her mother is British and her father is American born. But as far as I'm concerned she an honorary Brit :):):)
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She also studied at London Drama school and intentionally worked on acquiring the accent. Anyhow, she's very good in her role.
Jennifer, and Gillian Anderson, are truly bidialectal, they have two natural accents.
John Barrowman also has two dialects
Well des as she's done role perfectly
But firth too deservd it..for bringing out best in her.. Chemistry does matter... U see
Oh, i see! I'd been wondering about that. Cool!
Its the abfab ladies at 2:50 ... how nice.
She learned one must try to walk in the new gown before one decided to buy it or not......
All of those programs where so good I don't know how they could choose, Helen Mirren was one of the best actresses I've ever seen, when she played in Prime Suspect. Just stunning. And I really believe that Jennifer Eley only won because Pride and Prejudice as very popular.
No, she won because she was the best, and deserved it.
Geraldine James looks and sounds like Vanessa Redgrave.
Not bad for someone born in North Carolina.
2:57
yes is british.. but Her maternal grandmother was Romanian
Stephen Fry is so funny.
@toothbrush898 do bear in mind that this was 16 years ago!
American actress playing a British character winning a BAFTA.
Then today, you have British Actors/actresses playing American characters, winning Emmys (Daniel Lewis is an example) lol
Yes, she was born American, but her mother (Rosemary Harris) is British. Jennifer spent her childhood in both the US and UK.
You Brits know how to do this properly: funny host and short speech.
The remake wasnt even comparable to the original film.
This is the best version of Pride and Prejudice. Nothing else compares.
Ms Ehle now speaks with an american accent. Why do people do that? It's almost like a personality change.
If you Google her, she spent a lot of time in both the UK and USA due to her mum's career obligations. Her dad is also American. As such, she can switch between American and English accent quite easily. John Barrowman does the same with his American and Scottish accent.
This is so 1990s.
Which episode of Prime Suspect is that clip from? I can't believe I don't remember it lol! :)
I KNOW! I don't get it. And people's accents don't change that easily :P She's American, yes?
