Kate Winslet wins BAFTA for Sense & Sensibility

- Kate Winslet wins her first major award at the age of 20.
Her performance as Marianne Dashwood earned her the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award from BAFTA. The ceremony took place on 23 April 1996 at London's Palladium Theatre.
She is seen here accompanied by actor and writer Stephen Tredre, who would die tragically of bone cancer the following year.
I love how Emma and Kate were so supportive of each other. They need to work together again.

The beginning of both Winslet and the man she called a genius, Ang Lee's careers. Who in that room 18 years ago could have had predicted that these two would have had the enormous success and respect that they have now.

That was such a beautiful speech.
It's interesting to think that this is the same year that Kate Winslet started filming for 'Titanic'. She looks so much better now as she's gotten slightly older; apparently during filming of 'Sense & Sensibility', Emma Thompson strove to break Kate away from her eating disorder which left her skinny and anaemic, which you can really see in the film.

I dig that Mira Sorvino a month after her Oscar win and 3 months after her Golden Globe, still flew over to attend the BAFTAs. This was before it was held prior to the Oscars and prior to the internet being common to report BAFTA results to Americans. This shows how significant BAFTA really is as the UK Oscar equivalent. If the Oscars were considered solely tops, there would have been no need for her to attend. She's already the Oscar and Golden Globe winner before they even announced the winner.

No ! Because she was just started in Hamlet. She would go full red in 1997 for Titanic :)
@@orphicuranus the process of going deep red is not instant though, you need to build up to the right shade. She wore a wig in Hamlet.
