To me Shawn is one of the greatest of all time. She is powerful and extremely clean in her execution. Even if her bars routine isn't her strong point, there is barely any leg separation at all and she sticks her dismount which is one of the hardest dismounts ever. I really think she's unique. I have yet to see a gymnast that performs such difficult skills with the same amount of power and precision. Her knees never bend, her feet are always pointed and her form is just impeccable. Perfect combination of difficult elements and clean execution.
I like how when the gymnasts who aren’t as solid on bars have to do it. They put in components during the routine that don’t have a very high starting value, but then they do incredibly difficult dismounts IE Simone biles and Shawn Johnson among others.

Nastia just performed better that day and Shawn was underscored... But a little over scored when it comes to bars with bent arms and lack of handstand positions and with floor her leaps weren't 180 as one leg was usually short
I think Nastia was just in the zone that day, which would have made Shawn winning all the more difficult. But I also believe that Nelli Kim (head of FIG) really, really wanted Nastia to win over Shawn and everyone else, and did what she could to help sway things in Nastia's direction.
if they were in today’s quad, nastia wouldn’t even be considered an AA front runner. shawn’s gymnastics still hold up to this day and arguably is only second to simone

Actually Nastia got a 16.650 on UB in the AA. Actually, it was quite clear that by the last rotation, Nastia was going to win with a hit floor routine. Shawn wrote about how she sneaked peeks at the scores and calculated that she would need a huge score to beat Nastia. She literally went into her final routine knowing she couldn't win gold and went out there and did the best floor routine of her life.
Great they enjoyed being there. Hope that took the years of stressing to get there away. These gymnasts put in huge hours it nice to see they're alot of them that finish college with a good piece of change in the bank.

I don't know what the move is called where she swings from the higher bar and lands in a handstand position on the low bar, but that just looks impossible! And impressive how Shawn executed that. So much strength and skill.
To all the uninformed 12 year olds commenting, uneven bars is all about finishing your handstand positions on top of the bar, which Shawn did not do. Add to that her low difficulty and bent arms and you can justify her score

Very interesting if Shawn sticked around til 2012 with the skills she has in 2008 I think she would of gotten gold. This COP favored bars while the COP in the next quad favored power events such as Vault.
annagrace That was the problem with the scoring system that time. Uneven Bars was heavily rewarded in D score compared to the other events. All of the UB finalists had 7.0+ D scores with Nastia having 7.7 while it was almost impossible to reach 7 on the other apparatuses. So a good bar worker had a huge advantage. Thankfully the imbalance was fixed.
The only real mistake nastia made this entire competition was her step on uneven bars dismount. Shawn took a huge step on her vault, a step on her beam dismount, & only stuck one tumbling pass not to mention she had a pretty significant balance check on the beam. The gold belongs to Nastia. She was better when it mattered
Thats the sound before the begining of a floor routine so the gymnast can know when to start and no its not distracting because they are used to hearing it and you honestly dont hear anything when youre doing your routine youre too focused on what youre doing

Only in beam finals. In AA she made too many errors to be the best. Nastia executed flawlessly for four routines and proved herself the AA champion.

Had she been in this time period, it would have been quite the competition with her and Biles.
Mary Fiorentino biles is so above her with her skills.
