    You don't need to paranthesize "junk" in the title of the video, it's redundant with the word "MasterLock". In fact, it may even be a double negative.

    • @VideoDotCam

      thechosendude They should rename themselves to Novice Lock

    • @sarowie
      @sarowie 7 лет назад +8

      The double negative in shakespears time was used to "double" the negativity of a statement, not do undo the first negative like now a days. This is a funny artefact that sometimes still shows up in the english language. This can make for some fun statements, where the intention is clear as day but the wording isn´t.

    My shop purchased this lock for a trailer, I picked it with a toothpick in less than 15 seconds. I could wrap the hitch in rope and it would take longer for thieves to unwrap the rope than to open this lock!

      I bought a love lock for 1 euro. I did not expect much, but I put the tension wrench in to count the pins.... open - zero pins. Sure it is cheap creap, but the poor guy cutting of those locks from bridges, does not know how creap they are and wastes his time.

    I really fail to understand why a company like Master Lock, with decades and decades of experience would spend so much time, effort, and money to design such a nice looking, reasonably well thought out device, then skimp on the actual lock to the extent that it can be opened with a cheap letter opener.
    That failure of logic is totally beyond my understanding. :(

    • @Tom_Losh
      @Tom_Losh 7 лет назад +5

      Even something a simple as this, with a GOOD lock of one's choice, would be better than any I've see with a built-in lock: www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e07195-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&sfb=1

      Tom Losh It's because it's about sales and marketing. something thats heavy and shiny looks to most people like a good lock. then they have to keep costs down so they skimp on the locking mechanism that you cant see. its about how many units they can sell not about making thr best lock.

      Tom Losh....The accounts, especially the CFO, most likely had their say in the design. I can just hear the accountants now...you spent way to much money on the design, engineering and manufacturing, just use the lock cylinder from the line we discontinued....

    • @AToolWithTools
      @AToolWithTools 7 лет назад +2

      Mochyeassc2 Absolutely. The names that people who are in-the-know know and trust usually have a higher price point because they're willing to put the money into materials and design (they'll get it back from the end user), and because their name carries actual weight. May not be a name everyone immediately recognizes, but it's easy to get recognition by plastering TV with ads and cutting deals left and right to have your brand on the shelves of many common stores. You won't find an Abus at a Family Dollar but I'm sure you can find a Master.
      People want security but they start getting nervous about the price tag of proven security. These cost-cutter companies offer an alternative: security theater. It's less about actual deterrence to attack and more about peace of mind, which people end up buying into because it's a lot cheaper.
      Master Lock is pretty much the mall security of locks. Sure, they can and do provide basic service (again, security theater and some basic powers to detain criminals etc.) but for the big important stuff you'll need a police officer (or a Bowley or whatever in this case).

    Good job Master Lock, honest products as always.
    I find one of the more fun things about lockpicking is finding silly exploits like that. The other day I was demonstrating to some buddies at work that a piddly little TSA 007 lock could be opened with practically anything.

    Hey Bill! I had an experience in the Military with a pretty large MasterLock. The shackle was fairly long (about 6 inches from tip to the lock entrance. I always wondered if a little tension on the shackle with a twisting motion would break it free and sure enough I was able to hold the receiver in my hands and just twist the lock open without a key! I told the person in charge of the space and they put extra chains around the lock. I just shook my head and sighed to myself.

    Again, this stuff isn't there to stop a lockpick. It is just on a trailer to stop someone from being able to back up, hook up, and drive away. It is designed as a inconvenience and that is it. As I pointed out in your last post about trailer locks. IF they want your trailer, all they have to do is undo TWO BOLTS that hold the hitch receiver to the tongue and put their own on. With hand tools, all of 120 seconds worth of time max.

      Give me a flathead screwdriver and I'll drive away with that trailer in under 20 sec! It takes more time to hook it up to the car/truck than opening that lock.

    • @KaiserFrazer67

      Someone above suggested removing the wheels if it's parked on your property. A little inconvenient, but as I'd stated in my reply... how many thieves carry spare trailer tires and lug nuts with them? Plus if you leave the wheel-less trailer low enough, they'd have to jack it up to get their wheels on. All of that takes time which the thief doesn't have.

Hey: it´s a cooperation.

      Mads Voigt Hingelberg so black list certian bidding codes in the computer that cuts the keys and it should not be hard to eliminate any patterns without a single high or angle low cut 4 pins gives 65,536 different key biddings 8 of them are 4 of the same bidding if you put a statement to eliminate any that 2 or more pins were within 1 or 2 of each other... you would at worst remove another couple hundred combos... keys with shitty bidding should not be on the market...

    These things are especially frustrating because we know they can do so much better. They just don't give a toss, for whatever reason. All this thing needed to be a perfectly acceptable device was a non-stupid bitting and a couple security pins. If you have to wail away with a hammer on it to induce failure, well, it works. If someone can do so to your trailer undetected, they could have altered it otherwise to take possession of it undetected as well -say have a welding rig in the truck and just weld another hitch to the thing, or put together a haywire abortion from chain and U-bolts that'll get them to whatever covered place they intend on taking the stolen trailer too and taking the lock off at their leisure, with proper tools.
    What I'm saying is, that something like a trailer that is fundamentally mobile is really hard to secure by just messing with the point it attaches to the truck with. For mid-level securing of a trailer I'd pair a good hitch lock (say, one of these with non-stupid bitting) with a Denver Boot. If you want to be real serious, I'd build a pad-eye into the parking surface and proceed with normal heavy-duty lock and chain.

It's a good start, just replace the lock and then let's see how it does. I really hope you'll do this for us. We need a good how to on making yourself a good hitch lock. And ur the man for the job bill!! Anyone agree? Let's get this done.

    To lock my trailers, I use a lead ball, with a bolt and lock-tite red on the threads. Using a wrench, I wrench the ball into the lead ball in the receiver, it spreads the lead ball open, and the locktite when it drys is damn near impossible to open.. To get it off, I use an 12v impact gun

    Instead of a lock, I use Bulldog adjustable hitches and remove the hitch from the trailer leaving the plate which is useless for towing. This is nice when you have more trailers than hitches since the mounting plates are inexpensive. Most trailer owners don't know how easy a locked trailer is to tow away using chains. Thieves do know but the lazy sort will go after another trailer. If you park a trailer unguarded, an electric impact gun makes it easy to remove the wheels. Trailers that can't roll raise the bar to theft MUCH higher than a hitch lock or no hitch at all.
    I used to repo vehicles and someone with a tow truck can roll away with any trailer unless its wheels are missing. (If they have a rollback they can snatch most trailers anyway, even without axles!

    • @KaiserFrazer67

      Never though of that. I have both a utility trailer and small boat with trailer which I have to leave outside due to not having enough space in my building. Seems at first impractical, but how many thieves carry spare trailer tires and lug nuts with them? Makes sense.

  • @fridgebeer6897
    @fridgebeer6897 7 лет назад

    My best method to lock a trailer is to drill a hole near the opening just large enough for a shackle on a GOOD pancake lock to fit through and lock it that way. Or use a GOOD lock on the detention to secure the ball in. Either way they would have to destroy the hitch to get the trailer. Even better is to get a swivel hitch (one that unlocks and hinges to the side to store it and wrap it with a good heavy chain and a good lock that goes through the side pin hole to protect the shackle.

    That lock is so reflective you can see your face in it. Not sure if you care or not but from what I've seen you don't want people knowing what you look like for legal reasons but that's just me. Great video by the way

      Yes but I believe it was over a joke video he did opening Master Locks in ridiculous fake ways, e.g. scaring them, squirting ketchup etc. They claimed he was fraudulently misrepresenting their product.

      it wasn't an honest product review it was a joke video where he showed master locks popping open because they got intimidated when he moved a better branded lock near it and other similar jokes. I think he pretended to piss on the lock at the end and it opened.

    Could you not do those maneuvers with just about any similar lock? Is this one worse than any of those? which similar lock do you endorse? Because now I feel the need to get a new hitch lock.

    I half joked about one-pass rake picking this...facepalmed and laughed pretty good when I saw it happen. I feel like master lock is a joke company like "who could make this well designed marshmallow-cored lock company not go bankrupt as a bet" type deal.

    We actually use a lot of these locks where I work the older ones we had have more aggressive biting the newer ones we got a few weeks ago are actually all keyed the same and is the same key as yours so I tried and picked it in a few seconds using the end of a cut off wire tie. JUNK . But I went to master locks web site and if you look on the side of the box the full model number is 377ka for keyed alike on their website they also have a 377dat which is cheaper but for a little more money you can get a more aggressive bitting so if your going to get one of the pieces of junk get the 377dat not the 377ka we are actually going to order all our new one matching the key to one of our older ones that had the most aggressive biting . Thanks for your videos

      Shadow_of_STLKR Check out Bill's page:
      lock-lab.com/where-to-buy-stuff
      If you are in North America the one I would recommend is Sparrows (first link on Bill's page). Superb quality, fast delivery, good prices, nothing to complain about really, just ordered some picks from them and they are awesome. Prices are in Canadian dollars, so if you are in the US it's even cheaper with our piss poor exchange rate right now.
      Have fun!

    If you want a good trailer lock, just get a piece of 3-4" 1/2" thick wall tubing, slide it over the tongue. Have a hole drilled through the side of the tubing at the place where you buy it so you can run a piece of peweg chain through the top of the tube then through either a handle on the side of the tongue or a shackle you weld in that spot and back out the bottom. Then lock that chain with a quality lock. They won't be cutting that.

    This could be a good lock if you replace the core with an actual good lock. Body's pretty nice, worth trying to repurpose it.

    I am totally blown away that Master have not yet sacked the incompetent fools that continue designing these ridiculously simple to open and bypass locks. It's not the occasional Master series either, you seem to show us Bill that it's just about EVERY Master have ever released! Even their professional range are a joke!

    • @KaiserFrazer67
      @KaiserFrazer67 2 года назад

      The only Master locks which even come close to being worth buying are their newer anti-shim combination locks, and even those can still be "bypassed" with a crowbar and sledgehammer, as LockPickingLawyer has shown us (not much in that department has changed through the years). However, for the price, they are rather difficult to beat in a non-destructive manner; and might be OK for use on lockers ONLY if you know that the majority of the people in that neighborhood's facility (factory, gym, whatever) are relatively honest.

    That is ridiculous. Instead of pouring money into packaging and lawyers threatning with lawsuits, all Master Lock needs to do is only make decent bidings and add one measly spool spin to each lock. It won't make the lock perfect, but at least it will make a lock. That would make a nice primary school project :-)
