Inside the Extreme World of Body Suspension

- "It's not self harm".
Body suspension is the act of sticking hooks through the skin and hanging from them. Those who practice it, describe it as a natural ecstasy, a visceral and calming experience. The intention is not to cause hurt, they say, but to find a meaningful connection to the body.
While this ancient practice began as a way for religious penance, people who do it today seek something different entirely.
For Brut, filmmaker Léo Hamelin takes us into the extreme world of body suspension through the journey of a person trying it for the first time.

Is it addicting? I mean - can you get hooked?
best
I would never do this for myself, but I understand why some people would like this, that desire to challenge the human limits of the body and mind, try something radical, and come out feeling victorious and stronger. Same reason why people do dead lifts, and that is way too normalised than this.
Yea like I'm sure gymnastics is just as risky and there are other risky activities like being escape artist
I think the consequences of this one isnt the most dire it's just unusual / kinda painful maybe
This is not a deadlift
This is dead body lift
I don’t know if anything has ever scared me this badly. This video is absolutely horrifying to me
EXACTLY I can’t understand it at all
Then dont comment or you get stuff like this more recommended
Because the person who does this has some heavy psychical problems and this is their way to handle those problems..
Same thing as with people addicted to drugs, alcohol or whatever
hanging from a FRESH thick piercing? That must hurt SOOOOOO BAD
*Somehow I find this both utterly interesting and disturbing.*
To me this looks like it has something to do with self harm, at least to a part. Am I wrong about this? Could someone link me a vid that talks about this part with a few sources. Thanks!
I didn’t realize the history in suspension. That was interesting to leave. I’m glad that they had a great experience and that smile was so genuine. 🙏🏻 Best Be with You
Glad you enjoyed it!
Seems like the people of India have done everything imaginable. Sleeping in their own feces, etc.
Imagine sitting back and desiring to have hooks through your body. These people are not normal.
First sane comment. All those comments about ‘spirituality’ and whatever. This is just self harm. Only people with mental health issues want this. They should seek out mental help instead of doing this.
Agreed
@@sarahtonin256💯
It's not hurting you and you don't have to watch. To them, this IS the healing process. You can't act like you're concerned for these people when you're the kind of person who makes these people feel worse. Did you think bullying people was the solution to mental health? Get a grip
Self harm is not natural ecstasy, self harm is a sign of many psychiatric issues that need help and attention!
Normalizing self-harm is surely a new tendency in this generation covered by the term freedom and open-mindedness instead of lack of education
Connecting the past action to normalize present actions surely doesn't add any value; you might as well normalize all types of torture done in the past
If anyone you know suffers from the same problem, seek medical help as there are many solutions for such conditions
Brut you surely need to include suck advice instead of advising people to visit "hygienic centers" that provide such self-induced torture
👌well said !
Could not have said it better rasha
I’ve had both of my hips replaced and I recovered without pain killers. I think I’ve had my fill and enough of a connection with pain for the rest of my life
This all reminds me of the movie Hellraiser.... not differentiating pain from pleasure and all...
Pain is pleasure.
Ever punch someone in the face? It hurts your hand but you don't notice it in the moment. I get what your saying but it should be noted that suffering can be pleasant, that's why some people love physical exercise.
haha yeh that thought came in my head as well, these are the types of people I'd give the lament configuration to.
This was very nice to see. I have been curious about suspension for a while now but never witnessed the whole process. Juuuust gotta get over the tall and heavy part 😅
Wait what?!? She feels connected to herself when in pain? 👀🥴 ? Not judging but I sense some deeper pains. How is this any different from ‘cutting’ . People who cut are usually told to seek help, i don’t think anyone in their right mind would do a documentary showing the ‘good’ of cutting. So I’m not sure why this is promoted. To each his own I guess. I really wonder what people really get from getting high, instead of getting to the foundation of their problems. Much better to spend your energy getting to the root of problems , rather than getting high here and there.
This isn't the same at all. Most self harm behavior is hidden and shameful (I know bc I done it and studied it) this is a practice done with, witnessed and documented by others.
You don't have to judge how other people handle their bodies just because it makes you uncomfortable.
Different cultures and religions actually use pain tu connect with themselves and the universe.... So it's not that weird, it's a real old practice... Maybe use Google you know it's free 🤦🏽♀️
@@lotuslane5049 no no the hook thing is fine. But the saying she likes pain thing is at least mildly concerning
@@kittenmimi5326 I don’t think is “liking it”, i guess that the major part of her life was reign by pain so this kind of activities is a form of making it normal instead of torture.
Yep this girl definitely has some serious trauma unfortunately hanging from hooks is not going to permanently heal her internal pain only God can do that.
All I thought when you were on tippy toes swaying with closed eyes was Peter Pan. It was beautiful and I have happy tears.
Wow these comments here are... something. First of all: Thanks for showing the suspension process and the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist. They where very insightful - also the guy who did the practice seemed so nice and genuine, i really enjoyed watching. I did my first suspension last summer and i find it really sad that people are so judgemental about this. I had my fair share of self-harming behavior in my past and suspension is not one of them. It was a deeply healing experience which showed me that i can shift what i think, what i believe and the reality of things quite a lot. It felt like a glitch in the matrix being held in the air by two tiny hooks. It makes no logical sense and it's really hard to describe If you don't go through the process yourself. My inner workings what i can and can't do changed so much after this experience. I'm deeply greatful for that. Maybe - just maybe - we should rather try to emphatize with each others realities and experiences not as something threathening or bad bc society tells us so and rather embrace healing in different ways instead of calling each other "sick" for doing stuff we not fully able to understand. That's my view on that.
P.S. I've been in therapy for 3 years - so maybe don't pull the "go to therapy" card on me lol ;)
As I've said below, this IS her therapy.
@@newhorizonsforfifty2833 i'm not sure what you mean. would you mind to elaborate?
As I’ve heard it
Body art and bdsm
Pain can be therapeutic depending on the reason as to why it is sought after
But is not a replacement for therapy
@@amberharmsen2497 well i never said that its a replacement for therapy but i believe that not every trauma can be healed by talk therapy, cbt etc. Bodywork is therapy as well, the western world is just very judgy regarding old (spiritiual) practices that had been used and are still used as therapy. i think its more important to hear each other out instead of instantly judging what we might not fully understand. In the words of C.G. Jung "Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge."
whatever it's still self-harm, i hope you're doing better though
This is still popular! I learned about this in the early 2000's.
Can fat people do it? Serious question.
I know your comment is old. But yes, they can. It only requires more weight supports in the equipment and more hooks placed.
Is there a weight limit for the person to safely suspend? For us guys that are on the bigger side.
Well if you’re Tess Holliday, the roof will either cave in or your skin will be torn off
I think this is super cool!! so basically its sending out those endorphins cuz ur body is being physically pushed, then connect that to your brain and voila 😍 love it.
Interesting way of relieving stress. Would like to try indeed...
But why tho?
this entire video is glorifying self harm by creating an illusion of “spiritual healing”
Not everyones journey or experience reflects yours or the way society conditions us to think.
@@Sanajoon_metals but she does harm herself
if you do this just for spiritual reasons then i could understand but in this video it’s literally just glorifying self harm
how is it glorifying self harm? is sky diving glorifying self harm? sure body suspension can be dangerous but lots of things are
@@carmesan_cheez she literally was saying how she cuts herself and does blood play? I use to self harm personally and it’s obvious this is just an excuse to harm herself and her partner is enabling her. I hope she gets therapy she seems like a nice person, but this isn’t it.
@@pianolover8910 this isn’t self harm - this is a traditional practice that’s been used for a long time. would piercing or acupuncture be considered self harm?
this might sound like a stupid question but can fat people do this? like if someone was overweight can they still do it? everything i've see. abojt body suspension it's been a thin person hanging, just curious
who’s here because of Miguel? lol
If you're self-harming you should seek professional help. Don't rationalize this urge through extreme behaviors like these.
This is not self harm. Self harm has a certain mentality behind it, and this is not it. Sadly, a lot of people who do this may have self harmed before, but because they have before isn’t the reason why they are doing this. They just happen to be more used to pain. I’ve self harmed before, and I want to do this, but not because of the urges that self harm has. Self harm feels different. It’s almost involuntary, because it’s like impulses that are super hard to control. They’re uncomfortable but at the same time it’s almost something your mind forces you to do, which happens when you feel suicidal. Impulses are regular. But with this? This is a different mindset. In fact, it’s better to feel healthy when you do this activity, as not doing well can make the experience not what it is supposed to be for people. The point of this is to provide peace, and benefits. Of which, self harm has none. Think of this like a piercing, just more unbelievable and more unusual. A piercing is painful, but you feel great after getting it because you did it, and because now your changed forever with a beautiful new piercing. Just like this- except this is even better, and can actually change your mindfulness for up to months afterwards. It’s more a of a ritual than anything else. It is in no way self harm, and that’s coming from a person who knows self harm. It’s simply not the same. I wish the video hadn’t talked about moss’s self harm because I can see why you would associate them two then. Really, it’s not related. It may seem so, but it is not
There are some relations. The adrenaline rush is one. But there are important differences. This here is way closer to sports, when you push the limits, when you get adrenaline...
@@ElSings Sebastian probably never even came back to read your comment. He was just another one-and-done drive-by keyboard warrior.
Risky sports is not self harm
I could say the same of any physical sport. Hell look at boxing/fighting.
this is such a beautiful and educational video. i had no idea this was a thing and i’m so glad i learnt about it! thank you!
I thought wtf until I seen this video and it was explained more, I can see now why people do it
This is traumatising
Now how does the skin not rip off ?
The skin is strong
I have seen during a suspension meeting, one guy ganging from one hook, carrying two girls. Some 200+ kilograms. One hook in the back, which was severely deformed after. The skin did not rip.
That's how strong skin is.
@@Lightningchase1973 The misconception is that your whole skin is being pierced, but it's actually just a few layers in.
@@newhorizonsforfifty2833 I suspended 11 times, from classical hooks, but also from permanent surface piercings. All of those are pierced through the complete skin, the tunnel is passing through connective and fatty tissue. Piercing shallow would rip. So ots exactly vice versa.
@@Lightningchase1973 I've heard that the only part that hurts is the piercings? Not the hanging part. I've had my gf pull my back skin up as high as possible, while laying down. It was the most relaxing thing I've ever felt. I can only imagine hanging and hanging that no gravity feeling.
Also I love the bird skull weights super cool
Love body suspension! It's one thing that I would like to try!
Find God
Here after seeing Miguel get his back pierced😯
Why would you do that to your body?
Adrenalin, pushing the limits... Finally, in the air the feeling of flying.
Because my body is mine and I can. Because there is no other feeling like it in the world.
So interesting.
Waylay Jake it's your shirt, love love
Pinhead is enjoying this.
Maybe money would be better spent on a psychiatrist.
Mental health is a thing guys 🥴
I still think even if you have clean tools and all you can get an infection or pus or whatever. I don’t think it’s a good idea to do it to a body from a physical point of view
Wasn’t this a saw trap? Lmfao
it was! the titty wasn't strong enough lol
No
It’s a type of art. Personally, me?? Nah, I don’t feel the need to
I feel the same about full body tattooes.
My mother used to do this for fun and shows
I’m open minded and I’m trying to understand but why can’t people spend their time trying to remove pollution, save animals or feed the hungry why tf do we have to put hooks in our body to “feel something” I don’t know.
I'm with you Rachel
@@jessejohnson3138 if that is so important to you then stop yapping about other people and just go do it yourself go vegan or go volunteer idk

Yeah, well wait till one of them ends up with an autoimmune disorder for whatever reason.
Then that pain is nothing enjoyable. Live it 24-7 with no reprieve.
I guarantee in there is any truth to this they should be begging for someone to forgive them for such foolishness.
There is not appreciation at the close of it. It's sad someone would choose to accept pain voluntarily.
I would give anything for a day with no pain. Crazy.
So cool, so beautiful. I want to do this so bad 🖤

I wonder what purpose it serves. I read once that it is also a form of sexual perversion. Can anyone tell me? If people find it a pleasurable perspective, from a Freudian experience, It could have something to do with deeply embedded guilt, trauma or so, like people with NPD and psychopaths derive pleasure out of making the lives of others a living hell.
Mabey for some people, but i think its unlikley. For most, i think it's about pushing the limits of the human body, and testing yourself and your own mental strength. You could say the same about bondage during sex. Sure, for some it might be perverted and what not, but for most its about bonding with yourself and your partner.
*These People Are LITERALLY STUCK ON STUPID!! SELF HARM IS NOT ALRIGHT!!!*

When somebody harms an animal, all people are shocked, but when a human harms human, its ok, and sooo nice? How bad is that? Jesus tels us to love God, and ourselfes, and that is not love at all. Its satanic, the devil twists all around. And many of those poor indians have surely wished, they hadnßt to do such idiotic, pain causing rituals. We should be glad, if we dont live in such aggressive and pagan tribes. Jesus says, blessed are those, who are gentle, thats not gentle at all. Down with pain, down with satan, down with self harming rituals, nobody needs. Everyone should treat himself like a baby, and no loving dad and mam would do this to his child. God bless those, who are on the wrong way.
Because animals cant consent.
