Hi...I am a 70 year old woman who has wanted to learn woodwork since I was a child watching my daddy in his shop. He would let me use the chisel (with him standing right by me and after some stern words about what and not what to do). I loved it so much. But, as it sometimes happens, life got in the way and I never pursued the craft. Oh how I have regretted not learning all there is to know. When he passed away rather tragically in 1997, my brother got his lathe and promptly sold it. Not his fault...he didn’t know I wanted it. I love watching your videos and keep saying to myself, “Self, you could make that!” Maybe it’s not too late🙂
There are wood turning clubs around the US and many other countries that can help you start. I learned at one in Kansas City. Look for one close to you.
You do not wear gloves while working with a lathe. They can become caught and you are not strong enough to prevent your hand from wrapping around the spindle. Gloves or long sleeves or long hair are bad juju...
Excellent vid close up shots are fantastic, they make the vid very interezting and attention holding. Lovely colour of tthe wood. Plus no annoying intrusive background music, great vid ty
Usually I edit the videos at 2x speed, or they will be too long, but this one was short enough to leave at normal speed, and I wanted to test that, since some people complained about the speed.
Hmmm... People will complain about everything. I mean, even when cutting clips properly, watching at normal speed is pretty boring. I use to speed up my videos way too much but I've started slowing them down more.
Until I read the comments below, I thought the metal part was the working end. I made something very similar (although not a nice-looking) by inserting an old drill bit in a wooden handle, leaving the straight shank. The purpose was for burnishing hand scrapers after raising a burr.
It's an old model they used in factories back in the day, pretty common in my country, in Eastern Europe. The blade is good quality HSS, made by Pilana.
Pawel Sawicki These were for a friend, I'm tempted to use some leather in my projects in the future, but now I want to focus mostly on making tools. And the things I need to do around the house, like the chicken coop, if we decide to keep the chickens. But mostly tools.
Nu, au fost facute pt un amic. Ma tenteaza sa ma apuc si de leatherworking, dar probabil prin toamna, acum o sa profit de vremea frumoasa sa fac proiecte mai mari pe afara.
james leal He used mineral oil. Just a protectant, not really a finish. Burnishers work through friction, so you don't want to completely seal off the grain.
Sal, din cate mi-am dat seama, esti fie roman, fie moldovean, insa ai multe scule de provenienta americana. Locuiesti pe meleaguri romanesti sau nord americane?

Hope 1 year later you started back up
It is never too late!
Get started!

I’ve never thought to sand the inside coves like that. It’s so simple and so smart though. I am DEFINITELY going to be using that trick in the future.
Absolutely amazing. Your golden hands must be protected with gloves. Great thanks from Vietnam.

dude, your "failure" is just another awesome project int he making :)

Thank you!
I just wish it was sped up a bit more :)

There are options in youtube to speed up playback, as a viewer.
Loved it when you thumped the end off.
This is strangely satisfying
Nice and much more beautiful than purchased ones. 👍
Great use of scraps!!! May need to make one of these for myself! 😁🌲
Look watching you work with the wood turning lathe. The tools turned out awesome.

Strangely riveting to watch. I think I might have found my next big hobby 👍
Cool
10:06 that flick though
Great job!!
Master of masters!
Awesome
Beautiful! Thanks! 😊 👍🏼 G
Great video mate.👍
Nice work
This reminds me of gateway at school! Such a shame that only the middle schools have them, it'd be fun to do it in high school too
amazing
What solution are you using at 5:40 and 9:35 ?
Very good video. I would probably take off the bracelet while at the lathe. If it can go bad it will.
And the ring
Really nice. What is the liquid you put on the burnishers and then sanded more?
Are You Gonna Show How They’re Used? Nice Video By The Way.
I don't have any vegetable tanned leather at the moment. I'm not a leatherworker, these were made for a friend.
The Small Workshop Oh Gotcha. Thanks For Responding!
It's like a honey dipper...
what chuck are you using? Does your collet fit in it also? Thanks and enjoy your videos!
Keep that work !!
Love ur vids ❤❤
SUPER,BROTHER💪👍👍👍
what is the metal cutting saw called that you used in the 1:00 mark? (it's not a normal hacksaw and i kinda need one like the one you used)
It's an old model they used in factories back in the day, pretty common in my country, in Eastern Europe. The blade is good quality HSS, made by Pilana.
Muy buen trabajo me encanta ok
Beautiful work the second tool for the drill..👏 What wood is used?? Thank you..
Verry cool Video! :-)
Sorry I'm A Day Late Work Work Work, Nevertheless Amazing Work As Always! 👍👍👍
Thank you Alonzo!
What type of wood are you using........
The link to my Tool, does not work for me, but he Patron link does ?
I was wondering what model # Jet lathe you are using ?
Good
I thought you might show them in action. I had to look up what they are. Why did you put it in the drill at the end?
What are they?
I think you rub the edge of a leather strip in the wooden grooves to make the leather smooth
Ken: That is right
They 'burnish' the edges of the leather project to give a smooth, professional appearance. Nice video, btw. Thanks for sharing!
What's the shiny clear stuff you put on the turned one? It looks great
Mineral oil from ikea.
The Small Workshop thank you!!!!
what kind of chuck is that on the lathe?
Awesome. Leather projects coming down the line?

these are great projects, but you dont say what wood and what oil?????????
what are the measurements on your both of your burnishers.... distance between the valleys
Молодец!
It’s never too deep.
Hey, they look great! What wood was that?
The one with the metal rod is sapele mahogany. The classic one was "mystery wood", my first thought is that it was chestnut.
What are these tools used for? Can you show in video.
They are for polishing the edge of leather, like for knife sheaths and stuff. There are plenty of videos out there, just search for leather burnisher.
What type of wood do you use
How wood you fit........
Когда так и не понял , что он сделал , но сделал бесспорно круто
по русски это называется - сликер.
Still waiting for the plane restoration.......
But... but... how do they work?!
Rub leather in grooves. Google leather burnisher.
Salut.
Yeah let’s make tools we all have metal lathes.
What is that finish you put on that handle you turned?
Not really a finish, just mineral oil to protect the wood.
Ok, thanks... looks pretty awsome.
Alguien que hablé español y me diga que es lo que le pone a la madera para que quede así?
رضا زي فيهم ولي يحبه كيكه😂😉
Where your videos?
Wtf do you do with those?
Burnish the ends of leather, which basically smooths it down and makes it shiny
What’s the goo you used to finish?
So many goo’s so little time.

yes, I am.
You could make this video 40% shorter with better editing. But it is a nice video, anyway...
Nice work
