Finally a video with tips for brunettes!!
This was the most helpful video EVER! My brown hair had lifted very red/orange and I was desperate to change it before my engagement pictures. I only left mine in for 8 minutes but it worked great! The brass is all gone and my hair is a medium brown now!
Did you also use 7a? I'm having more like ginger tones in my hair, they're lighter than the hair shown in the video and idk if I should also use 7a
@@nq3526 I want to know the same!
I am SO excited to try this out. This is one of the better before and afters that I have seen and I am glad to read in the comments that another viewer tried it and they were just as pleased with the results!
I know it’s definitely more important what you like at the end of the day, but girl that warmer brighter tone looks amazing on you! A warm Demi on the roots would make it look so good.
A demi color usually appears to be a shade darker because it is deposit only. Also an Ash tone color usually looks a shade darker because it absorbs light rather than reflecting like a warm tone. Therefore the combination of a demi 7A (medium ash blonde) on her level 7 warm toned hair looks like a level 5A (lightest ash brown). For a lighter (dark ash blonde) shade result she could use 8A (light ash blonde). The activator lotion is only 6 Volume and so doesn't lighten, just deposit.
Thank you for all this info!!! So useful!!
Omg I just tried this on my hair and it worked perfectly! I have a light brown balayage that is now lightened quite a bit, the lightest piece of my hair is a golden blonde and I really wanted a medium brown colour and I’m so glad I tried the 7a! Your video was a god send! Warning to everyone out there your hair will be a little darker as shown in the video but if that’s what you are looking for this works great!
Maya Joshi yay!! I’m so glad !!!
Thanks for your reassurance. :)
Wow this worked even better than I hoped! I had my hair dyed at the salon a few months ago to match my natural colour (light brown) to try to grow it out but it has faded to an awful reddish brown and root regrowth (with a few sparkly greys). I followed your tutorial exactly and it is a rich medium brown. Not just a dull flat brown, there is definitely dimension. It's honestly very pretty and shiny and doesn't feel damaged. I'm blown away! The root regrowth is just blended in and most of the greys (I don't have many but they drive me crazy) are covered as well. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!
Jessica Kenny 🥳🥳🥳
Since everything is closed I decided to just do it! I am so glad I did! It worked perfectly and with no damage to my hair. Thanks :)
Jasmine L. Thompson yay!
Your hair is so shiny and love the results. Thx for sharing.
The second lighting you used was way better I wish you would’ve used the second lighting in your results as well. Good work! Keep it up.
Thank you!! I’m letting my natural brown hair grow and my highlights are ice blonde. I need to tone soon!
Thank you for sharing this with us. It's exactly what I was looking for! I will try it.
Veronica Gael you’re welcome!!
Thank you!! Very informative. Also both colors look amazing on you. Your hair reflects light very well regardless of the color 😍
You’re so cute! Looks so shiny and healthy and you’ve given us all the confidence to do our hair ourselves
So, what might be happening here is the "a" in 7a is toning the reddish color out of the hair. The low level developer (10 vol.) is causing little to no lift or deposit of color. She is basically changing the tone of her her not the level. Her hair may be appearing darker but it is the tone that makes it look that way.
4949GAL what if I use developer 30 vol??
@@TheGalaxy1x it would make it lighter.
i get what youre saying makes sence
Thank you it toned down to the perfect color!
thank you so much for this video! So so helpful. I purchased hair extensions that were SO WARM compared to my dark brown hair. I need to tone them and wanted to know a good color choice using wella. Xoxo
My hair is fading and doing the same thing ! I bought the same products from sally today thank you for the advice 😁
This hair color looks really nice. I'm gonna try to go back to a dark blond/mid brown from blonde. Probably I shouldn't choose an ash tone for this, but maybe in the future I will try this color.
Hi there! I followed your instructions and also bought it (although it's more expensive on Canadian site) and it turned out amazing! Loved the results! I would never had thought to buy 7A, so huge thank you!
Love your hair before and after 🥰
Okay so I tried this and I think I may have missed a few spots on my hair and it's looking uneven I had a light brown balayage how do I fix it 💀?
I haven’t the exact same hair colour as you but my roots are a lot more light and ashy. Will the toner make my hair to dark on the ends to match my roots?
Your hair is BEAUTIFUL!!!
thanks so much for this video! My hair gets light fast despite using blue shampoo so can’t wait to buy these products and give it a go !
Prerna C you’ll love it!
Hii it’s not Permanent right?
If my hair was slightly less faded and more porus on the ends which toner would I use? We have very similar hair and I’m tempted to try the 7a with a 6vol but am not 100%! someone help a gal out x
Thank you!! I have the same story with my hair.. I definitely want to try what you're doing!!
let me know how it goes!
ELA BOBAK after watching your video, I ran to Sally’s !! And guess what, I absolutely loved it!!! Seriously, thank you soo much!! Covered all my ginger ends . Also, it’s super cheap.... at the salon I would leave so much $$$
yayy!!! so happy you loved it!!! it saves me sooooo much $$$$!!
Can you use this to darken sun bleached hair? As my hair is all natural? ❤️
Your hair is beautiful!
LOVE THIS! One thing only is that I wish you would have filmed an after clip in the bathroom lighting to compare to the before in that lighting because you were right it was so different and I am sure in the bathroom lighting the after clip would be GORG - xoxox!!
I have a lot of hair and it’s also long should I use the entire bottle?
I thanked you before and I would like to do it again love this sooooo much. The only down side it’s Demi does well have a permanent color that’s the same as this??? Thank youuuu
Loved it ❤️👍🏼
Omg you have no idea how much this helps me!! I colored my hair a month ago a dark purple red that faded very quickly to a reddish that I hated so I tried going over it with a medium ash brown and it helped but didn’t cover all the red. I’m going to Sally’s tomorrow to pick these products up and get my hair back to it’s natural tone! Thank you so much if this works for me I think I’ll cry!! 😊
Laura C 😫👍🏻🥳🥳🥳 yay!!!
ELA BOBAK - Just finished my hair and omg I’m so happy with it!! Thank you soo much!!There’s a tiny tiny bit of red but you can barely see it I’m probably just being over critical. I had to go to 2 different Sally’s 3 times because I got the wrong color at first (no clue how I managed that 🤣) then when I went to exchange it they didn’t have the right color so I had to go a few towns over to another one 🤦🏻♀️ I picked up two boxes though so I’ll be good for a little bit! In about a month or two I’m gonna color with with a dark ash brown and hopefully that will cover it for the most part for good. Other than that I’m staying away from anything but my natural color! Thank you again! 😊
Laura C yay !!
Just wanted to thank you and also say to everyone who watched this video I tried exactly what she did and I got the exact results :) I had a lot more hair so I used a lot more if I could post before and after I would . But thank you for the video this helped a lot and exactly what I was looking for ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ricky Gonzales yay!! Glad it worked!
@@ELABOBAK did you go all the way up to your roots?
lisaroselouise yes!
ELA BOBAK thank youuuuuu!
my hair is warm reddish brown and i really want to tone it more ash, would it work?
hi, will this work for highlithed colored hair mine is bron with hihghlights that look orange as a penny coin? how long dos it last?
I love your results
So helpful👏
Would this work if I use blue shampoo
Awesome video! Straight to the point! Client terms not hairstylist terms lol
I have a black roots going to chocolate ombré. Do you think it will affect the black?
Any ideas in what would happen if I used a 20 volume instead?
How long do you let it sit before you rinse it out?
Beautiful hair color!
A1977ification thank u!
It still looks warm just darker to me?
When you tone your hair, how long do you leave it in for? because I have very warm hair. I’d like to tone it.
Ps where did you get the plastic measure cup? Last time I accidentally bought the small size developer and it was fine for one time but next time I am definitely buying the bigger size so I will have to measure it.
Which shampoo is good to keep it brown?
Thank you so much!
Gorgeous!!
I really like that colour. ..the both colours suite you hun..
Julie Insley thanks!!
Thank u for this!
Very beautiful colour
YOU ARE SO PRETTY!
Ashley Wyatt aw stop! Thank u!
What developer did you use?
I just did it and i love it
Lilyyy Cisneros yay!!
Loved your video! What if someone would have wanted to go darker? Would you recommend medium natural brown?
I’m not sure! :/ maybe keep it on longer ?
How long do you leave it on your hair? You didn't mention the processing time on hair.
Jessica R it was 20 min
Hello , I have another question, can I use just toner on my hair without developer? Does developer damaging the hair? Thank you
Rina Sunshine u need the developer for it to work. Toning does not damage my hair
Thank you so much for your help:)
What color do you use to initially dye your hair? The color of your hair is what I've been after for soooo long!
Cayla Tillotson the color is faded and is now this brassy brown. I haven’t died it since August of 2017!
I have semi permanent brown hair over some bleach but my natural hair is growing in and it’s very red/brown, will it affect the brown over the bleach?
no🤍
Hi I just saw this video and it's super helpful, but just have a question did you pick the color 7a because of your natural color?? I'm just trying to see what would be the best color for me to use!!
Diana Cano I was told to use that color from my hairdresser. :/
@@ELABOBAK Oh yes good point! I should ask mine too hehe!! Thanks for the reply!!❤️
Hi, thanks for your video, your hair looks great and I've been trying to grow out my color too. I'm a brunette also. I would like to ask you, how does the 'wella 7A 7/1 ash BLONDE' make your brunette hair darker? It doesn't make sense to me that a color with the word blonde in it can make a brunette darker. Hope you can advise. Thank you.
Lorna OBrien I have no idea but it works!
@@ELABOBAK But what made you use a blonde shade instead of a brown?
@@jusssayin480 a demi color usually appears to be a shade darker because it is deposit only. Demi’s come out super dark, I use wella dark natural blonde and my hair comes out medium brown, I’ve also tried light brown which is the next shade up and my hair comes out really dark brown
GORGEOUS!!!! What vol is the developer?
thank you! 10!
Try the manic panic in blue voodoo is a very small amount of blue dye and lot of white conditioner
this will cancel orange tones in hair temporarily
This too
The only way it last longer is with a permanent dye
Your hair is gorgeous
Sophia Gurley aw thank you!!
U do keratine treatment for U hair
I think it looks pretty before you toned it it’s a nice autumn colour 💖
Ela, how did you do your hair before with the reddish highlights? That's what my daughter wants. Thanks :) You have beautiful hair :)
Tracey S it was just faded from dying it!
@@ELABOBAK do you mean lightening it?
Which brand and clor/ tone you used. My hair is very similar...please help
Ankita Patel all info is in my blog post and description!
That's the hair color I want
Question. Please help.
In your description it says ‘Toner’, but the Sally’s Web site says ‘Demi Permanent Hair Color.’
I thought Hair Color and Toner were two very different things? Please help
A Waltz it still is toner. Not sure why!
Demi permanent hair dye deposits color on the surface of the hair. Demi permanent colors use a low level developer, unlike a semi permanent which doesn’t. The A in 7a is for ash, and ash tones will tone the brassy orange colour in her hair, that’s why demi pennant colors can be used to tone the hair. It is Demi permanent so it’s not a long term solution, the deposited color does wash out eventually.
I love this but I can’t find it in my Sally’s. Can you share what type of developer
Info in description and blog post
I’m planning to do this to my hair here in the next 30 minutes so hopefully I can find answer, but after apply it your hair, wait 20 minutes and wash it with shampoo and conditioner?
I wash my hair before it since u have to tone it when it’s wet!
That’s answer made no scene😳
That*
@@ELABOBAK you don’t have to tone it when it’s wet…
Thank you beautiful this is exactly what I needed down to the shade. :)
Hannah Truesdale I’m glad!!
Does it have to be semi permanent or can I use permanent hair dye?
Toning Is semi permament
Your hair is beautiful before and after. I died my hair from blonde to an ashy brown but went a bit green/grey/purple in places, especially in sunshine, so I covered in a chocolate brown which has red in it. I'd love to get it to your end result or possibly a little lighter. Do you have any suggestions, please?
Sorry this is the only tip I have! I’m not a hair stylist :(
Thank you for this video! but the links for the toner and developer are no longer working, could you include those details or respond with them! I would so appreciate it! thank you :)

Rina Sunshine you’re welcome!
How long do you leave it in for?
Kimberly Denise 20 min
The original color you had before you dyed it, did you use the medium ash blonde?
Analaura G the original color was just faded from dark brown
ELA BOBAK I love that color! Do you know how you can achieve that color? My hair is currently dark brown. Also thank you for answering!
Analaura G maybe something more brown red? I’m not sure :( thanks for watching !!:)
Looks good
I don’t get how a color like ash blonde would make your hair look darker. I just got highlights and I’m not a fan. They are yellow! I wanted like a warm chestnut highlight and I want to fix it myself. Not sure what to get.
J A Idk why either but it works !
Plucking hair from your head is not a good idea even if it seems tempting. You always chance damaging the follicles and it never growing back again. You will want your hair, even the gray hair, as you age.
Your hair looks great! May I ask how does a level 7 darken your hair? Im so afraid of using an ash and turning green but I hate the intense brassy warmth that is showing through.
I’m not sure :/
@@ELABOBAK Well it looks gorgeous! SO well done for figuring it out!!! Please wish me luck not going green again 🤢
Another commenter @sugrmag3 explained it well: A demi color usually appears to be a shade darker because it is deposit only.
Also an ash color will never turn your brassy hair green - that would only happen if you had like light blonde hair and were going darker without filling with a red first.
@@striketochill thats exactly what it was you are correct. I had brassy blonde but it wasn't even I guess and some sections must not have been brassy so it turned the brassy parts nice and then sections were greenish and others purple-ish. i have zero experience and it was during the pandemic when everyone was closed so I went for it and failed. Thank you for your help and input this was definitely very insightful!
Can you tell me what level your roots are? And did it lighten or darken your roots?
Stacy Nedroscik it should not affect your natural color if it id dark like hers. Maybe it will look a tad ashy or neutral but demi color does not lift hair color (lighten it). It only deposits.
I want to tone my own hair. How does med ash blonde make your hair dark? I have dark hair and my highlights are too light.
Yeah i was wonderimg that too...
A demi color usually appears to be a shade darker because it is deposit only. Also an Ash tone color usually looks a shade darker because it absorbs light rather than reflecting like a warm tone. For a lighter (dark ash blonde) shade result she could use 8A (light ash blonde).
@@sugrmag3 hi idk if you’ll seeee this but you seem to know what you’re talking about! so I have extremely light pink hair (I just did a strand test with wella 5A/246 toner) and it’s looking less ashy than I hoped - should I mix in the cool violet or should I pair with a more chocolate brown?? I am cool toned light skin, light features TIA :))
@@melissarenee7565 hi, I just saw your comment. If you’re a ‘light pink’ initially, that indicates that you have previously lifted your original color to a pale blonde color, ie: yellow or pale yellow, and then applied a pink color to that result. Whether it faded from a brighter pink or was applied as a light pink, it doesn’t alter that the hair underneath the color is devoid of the original pigment molecules that were lifted by the lightening (bleaching) process. You don’t state what you used to get the pink, whether a Demi-permanent or ‘semi’ permanent ie: direct dye. Either will eventually fade to a pastel shade.
Wella 5A isn’t a Toner, it’s a Permanent (or Semi-Permanent) Tint, ie: Dye. It has a Green base. This with the Red base of the pink shade previously applied will cancel each other out so to speak, as they are opposing each other on the color wheel, leaving a Neutral tone. Be careful going down more than 2 shades once lightened as this is how you can end up with a green or other strange color result. You first need to Fill the hair (put back in the pigment color removed in the initial lightening), and then put the desired shade on the hair, or possibly a shade lighter. Without knowing what is in the hair it’s not possible to responsibly suggest what to use next other than a good protein deep conditioning treatment followed by a good moisturizing deep treatment to restore and repair the hair and assist with the high porosity. This will help achieve a uniform color result. Without more details about what was used, I can’t suggest what you might want to use. You haven’t stated what you prefer it to end up as other than more ash. Ash is a tone like warm or golden. It doesn’t suggest a color (blonde, brunette...) or level (dk blonde ie: level 6/7, lt brown ie: 4/5, etc.).
@@sugrmag3 I already did it like a week ago probs but it turned out great adding some balayage tmr thanks though ! the pink was previous from splat (literally the worst) and punky colour depositing shampoo
How often do you tone your hair? And for how long do you keep the toner on your hair??
Valerie Strokachenko I do it when I have something that I want it to look good for haha. I really need to do it soon just for fall since it got pretty light this summer. But since it only stays for a couple weeks I like to do it before a trip or event or something. Glad you are going to try it !
And I keep it on my hair for about 20 minutes
I have the same problem when growing out my natural color! Do you put the color on your natural hair color too? Or just the dyed parts?? I don’t want to color my natural hair, so does this wash off your natural hair color in the end too?
i color my natural hair too- it still feels very natural afterwards and fades away anyway and leaves it to how it was in the beginning.
Awesome! Thanks so much! Your video was so helpful!
im glad!
What volume developer did you use? So helpful thanks a lot for the video
Linked in description
@@ELABOBAK the link is to 20 volume and it seemed like a little too much, was it 20? Did you get growth in a different tone so you need to always dye it?
Guys don’t do 20 mins if you don’t want it as darker I went to for 7 mins it’s already a dark brown soo I recommend doing 5 mins lol
Did you use the same colour as here? Medium ash blonde?
Hey which volume of developer did you use?
Developer linked in description
@@ELABOBAK u didn't use developer used a lotion. I've never tried that. I usually do a volume 10 . G ood to know
Are you trying to grow out your natural colour?
I have two inches of my real brown hair but the rest is dyed brown which has now gone reddish and brassy.
Does this touch your natural hair?
Amber Leah yes I put the toner on my natural hair and it doesn’t ruin it or anything. The toner fades in 1-2 weeks for me and my hair is back to how it was
ELA BOBAK thanks very much :)
Hi Amber, I am in the exact same hair situation as you. If you tried this method did it work for you ?
@@MultiFluffys Hi Lucia, I havent tried it because my hairdresser said any colour can leave a stain on the hair, they recommended just dying it without touching the roots/ natural hair. I ended up dying it all again, but I am going to try this method when I need to.
What number developer? 20 or 30 vol???
Not sure bc I used the activation lotion linked
The discontinued this on sally 😢
Is this the same hair color you used before? Because I LOVE the tone of your hair it faded to and I’m trying to get that instead of my blonde highlights lol
Renee Wilson yes!
Did it cover your grays?
i actually forgot to check if it did!
You need 20 vol developer and ideally permanent dye to cover gray hairs. You can also use Demi colors but they will fade eventually and reveal the gray. 10 vol isn’t strong enough for gray coverage, and the developer she used is actually just a 6 vol I believe (even though she said it was 10).
Was your hair damp before you applied the toner?
No I forgot
@@ELABOBAK But it seemed to turn out okay. Did it make it any dryer? Reason I'm asking is because my hair is very dry... Thanks for responding. Happy Valentine's Day.
@@kytown4248 it turned out fine!
Wow!!!!
