They have reverse character development in Part 2, while Joel regains his humanity and grows softer Ellie grows colder and colder and nearly loses all her humanity but in the end we see she's not too far gone, there's some good left in her.

I loved the slow unravelling of David's character. Everything is expected as I played the games, but still as you said. I had to ask my partner "Does he have more on his plate?" To make it seem like I wasn't seeing things. The way he was so "kind" to Ellie and James was confused asf because he was likely involved in all the cannibal shenanigans. The way he said he had violent nature, was a teacher who taught kids Ellie's age, and then attempted to rape her. Clearly he's always been a villain and who knows how many times he's got away with disgusting acts.

Like - at the very end of this episode, we see Ellie and Joel leaning on each other, both struggling a little bit to walk. Joel because he's recovering from his wounds still, and Ellie because of what she just experienced. And when David really reveals who he is, with her in the cage - she gives a little, breathless 'oh' that indicates she understands his sick desires. I feel honored to know the story beforehand and get to see it come to life in a new way. I feel that I can really take in each moment, knowing why it matters. I loved seeing the video game Joel’s actor in episode 8. It just really meant a lot. The show already has nestled itself very very deeply within my heart.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how the last of us portrays violence and how the whole apocalypse is a symbol for the cycle of violence. But I really love the point you make about while Ellie is dangerous like David, she’s also protecting like joel. Something that she can grow into more with being the cure. A possibility of breaking the cycle of violence and protecting humanity.

My friend, you do an amazingly beautiful job with these video essays. David is run by ego and a god complex which is what happens when the wrong people are allowed to run things in a situation like this.

Aww man your video made me cry you beautifully highlighted everything I love about not just this episode but the whole show. I've loved every single episode and found the parallels between other characters to Joel and Ellie have been magnificent like how they bookended Bill and Franks episode. Seeing Ellie break down Joel's wall has been so emotionally satisfying and these two complex characters whom I adore are being played so perfectly by Pedro and Bella every facet of them is so interesting and moving to see. I loved when you mentioned the scene where David said he and Ellie were alike because I was screaming nope to David at my screen. Really really loved your vid and so glad to see people get and appreciate this incredible show for allt he detail and nuance they put into it.

An excellent review of an absolutely stunning series.
From the very first episode I was convinced that this story was destined to become legendary.
I had not been aware of the video game that this was taken from, but I am not surprised to discover that the game won many awards, including game of the year, and was considered to have one of the best stories ever written for any game.
It truly stands head and shoulders above any other shows in its genre.
The writing and acting is first class, but it is the theme of the show that really touches deep.
And that theme keeps showing us again and again that when the world falls apart around us, it is the relationships we build with others that help us to keep our humanity.

You know I don't mind the slow 'climb' (as you call it), but I mind a little bit about taking detours from the main story. I think there should be a way to introduce new depths to it while keeping the focus on Joel and/or Ellie. I mean, for example, Bill and Frank's story is told simply to give meaning to the letter left for Joel. But Bill and Frank's story in itself doesn't mean anything in terms of the actual story-- which is centered around Joel and Ellie.
In this regard I believe the show could've adapted closer to the game, have Joel and Ellie meet Bill and Frank, and structure that plot to end with the same message as the letter. Or, even, we could have a flashback of Bill and Frank from Joel's POV, where he occasionally came back to do business with them, that way we're provided with a more tangible value to Joel's relationship with the couple, through the letter.
