  • my last video about last of us was very well received which has been a blast, but I'm excited to keep working on more video essays. Episode 6 was once again a blast to watch. Totally engaging from start to finish. When I finished watching it I was nervous people wouldn't like the slow pacing of the first half of the episode, so I thought I'd focus on why I loved it so much

Agree, this is a more gritty and realistic version, and I love how they humanised Joel by showing him as an old man with PTSD and panic attacks, not a superhuman killing machine.
Despite all this, (spoilers for those who haven’t played the game), I hope the scene in which he rescues Ellie from the fireflies has tons of action (that is, lots of people to fight), to show how Joel, despite having a meagre chance of survival against the fireflies, is ready to risk his life so that he doesn’t fail Ellie again.

@@kaushiksarkar6290 I can appreciate the acting but they VERY jarringly changed the features of what the main characters were supposed to look like. If you played the game in 2013 and dubbed it your favorite series of all time, it can be hard to get a grip on the changes they've made. I'm not saying the show is bad by any measure, but when it's fresh to a completely new viewer it's much easier to grab onto because you have nothing to compare it with, you've fallen in love with it differently. Getting used to change is hard, give people some slack, a lot of us just want to see our favorite series memorialized in the best way possible/highlight and revisit what we fell in love with.

The subtly is one of the best things about the show. I suffer from generalised anxiety disorder & PTSD due to seeing a family member die. And the writers have portrayed it so well. Joel's panic attacks, nightmares, his moments of freezing, difficulty having close relationships and especially his monologue to Tommy. His struggle with unhealthy stoicism is on point too. Its so good to see it portrayed in a realistic way.

This episode was peak, it centered around family. And for the first time in the series, we see what's been inside Joel's head the entire time, he's afraid of losing her again. Ellie's becoming a daughter figure to him . And after they head to the university, we see how close Joel and Ellie are now . A montage of them travelling and having fun, reminds us of a Father and child moment. The two are alone, but they have each other. And that's the beauty of this episode

    • @lucas.p.f

Episode 6 changed their relationship in a way that they now chose each other, instead of it just being a "mission". They stated that they want to be together and that they like each other and care for each other. This is why we see Ellie touching Joel for the first time after they leave that place, when she lays her head onto his back. This is now choice, not obligation.

People often forget, that The Last of Us is not like The Walking Dead, the show is not about a typical zombie shows, it's about a man who lost his daughter, and that loss turns into a wound, but then he met this little girl who is special to the story, and bound with her, and that bound healed that wound. People often complaining that the episode don't had a lot of action or infected

    • @mydogeatspuke

TWD isn't about zombies either. Not that the infected are zombies. It's about people and their trauma and pain and struggles too. You can't have watched TWD if you genuinely believe there are no similarities between that and this.

@@Ashley-km4qi I mean that's not true though. There are loads of episodes of TWD that have little to no action in them and instead focus solely on the people. TLOU is going to be 9 episodes long too, it's hardly a relevant comparison to a multi season show that ran for what, a decade?

    • @catradorasprmanager7728

@@mydogeatspuke it does include those elements but it's mostly action. I love the characters in twd but I can't name a single relationship in that show that is as deep and complex as joel and ellie's. twd is about people in a zombie apocalypse. tlou is a story about a damaged man and a girl who just happen to be in a world filled with infected and other dangerous things. both games are about these characters even when one of those characters is dead. the whole second game is about ellie avenging joel, it's not about the outbreak or anything else. if twd was solely about rick and carl or mainly focused on one specific relationship it would be like tlou but the only similarity they really share is the apocalyptic setting.

    • @mydogeatspuke

The game isn't even close to the show when it comes to delving into the characters, a lot of the tone of the interactions is totally different which gives it a completely different feeling, the second game is only about Ellie's revenge if you're one of those saddos who refused to play the (longer) second half, and it also is a game not a show, which btw is full of action so doesn't even meet your weird bar of entry, aaaaaand TWD is a decade of lots of episodes in long, numerous seasons. Hundreds of hours of content. TLOU is 9, 10 hours at best. And just off the top of my head, the early time in the prison was all about relationships, hardly any action at all. It's so painful and REAL to watch Joel slowly begin to lose some of that physical and emotional strength that has kept him alive for 20 punishing years. The slowing down of reflexes. The slow progressive mild but dangerous hearing loss. The panic beginning to make him feel a helplessness he's never felt before. All these things could have been corrected or avoided in the OLD world where healthcare was possible and life was easier. Now, in this NEW world, with Ellie becoming more of a daughter to him than he ever wanted to admit, and the fear of something happening to her, this natural aging process has practically crippled him emotionally...and the end of this episode with his serious injury....THIS SERIES IS KILLING ME!

There's this feeling of closeness between my experience of the show coming from the game and the story itself. I started the show hoping that this would give justice to the game and hoping to love it, but i felt deep inside this need to reject it, to keep expectations low and be ready for the moment when it would "let me down". Also i felt this guilt in the idea of loving the adaptation because it felt a bit like betraying the original. And then, episode by episode, i found myself caring in a way that goes above the simple "make this right not for me but for those who don't play videogames" and in this episode i gave up, lowered my defenses and surrended to the fact that i love this like i love the original game and there's nothing wrong, like there's nothing wrong with Joel loving another daughter although its so hard to accept. Yesterday night i cried watching episode 6 and felt like i felt the first time that i've played the game, and i'm so grateful for that.

I feel like this is a good place to discuss something I noticed about life.
I spent a year surrounded by women and very few men when I joined a volunteer program. During this year I couldn’t help but notice that women communicate differently with each other than they do with men. In fact men and women have there own form of communication. I couldn’t put my finger on what was different until more recently: men use silence to convey things, women only use silence to differentiate between words and maybe thoughts, maybe. For men silence is part of the conversation, for women it is the antithesis of a conversation. Obviously there are exceptions, but listen the next time you see two people of the same gender talk to each other, I think you’ll start to notice what I mean.
This connects to the video because I feel the subtlety that helps tell these stories is a masculine way of telling stories. Not that women can’t tell good stories or even use subtlety, but they are using a more masculine form of story telling. If you look at stories that are told by women they don’t seem to have as much subtlety and don’t use it the same way. Not that they use it in a bad way but it achieves a different effect.

U are Deep, good analysis indeed, ‘the Roller-cost starts with a slow climb ‘ become your best quotation, keep the deep thoughts of this marvelous serie, I am never crazy for Zombi Apocalypse, but I surely make an exception for The Last of Us, so happy that they choose Bella Ramsey for the role of Ellie, she is definitely a Natural talented actress, instead of focusing solely on her look, and Pedro Pascal is his best role yet although in Narcos and GOT he also exceed his performance, God these series are so important for me and taught me so much about life and human existence 👍🏻

I honestly bawled my eyes out over this episode.
It felt so ...almost peaceful in contrast to what happened so far. So all the emotional unpacking, not just between Ellie and Joel, but also Tommy and him, all those human connections, those feelings of love, fearing that love, failing to say what one actually means, hurting each other in the process even though that wasn't at all what you intended, and then still trying your best to let them know you care!
That all got to me so much! The vulnerability, the raw human emotion.
I feel sorry for those brick people who cannot fathom the beauty and the horror of truly caring for someone. At the end, relationships are all we'll have left.
Thank you soooo much for this video!!!

I've resisted Bella as Ellie I didn't want to like her ; she looked so different.
However, I've watched the first 6 and those scenes at the end where she's telling him to get up that she " can't do it without him" have finally won me over.
    She's fantastic.

I never had the chance to play the game but I always knew I would love the story in it. I never wanted to watch playthroughs so I would watch the TV show unbiased (tho I already was because I adore Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey).
I love being emotionally destroyed by a beautiful story. :D

these videos are so hilariously heavy handed, from the hamfisted narrative delivery to the rupi kaur-esque spacing of words on the subtitles, to the slam poetry style pacing. jesus man, it’s like satire.

haha I think that's fair. I was aware of the fact that I'm definitely leaning into this style of creation. It does lend itself to mellow dramatics and is a bit heavy handed if you're not engaged or enjoying the presentation. However I do believe it's resonating a lot with others. To each their own

One thing that i've been telling all my friends that are watching this series without ever seeing anything from the game is that The Last of Us is a relathionship story. Not a zombie story, action, or whatever the fuck. TLOU is about the people we see every episode and how they're dealing with the things that sadly comes up. I honestly think that they're doing an amazing job in this adaptation bc we can finally enter the brilliant universe of characters and emotions that, in the game, are just some dialogs in the gameplay (and i love this tbh is so cool walking with ellie and she just starts talking abt whatever the fuck she wants meanwhile joel is fucking run out of bottles to distract a clicker). I loved the way joel is panicking and suffering to accept this relationship with ellie, hes so so scared and doesnt want to fail her just like he thinks he failed Sarah and that he'll fail Tess. It's so much heartbreaking to see Joel telling her she's not his daughter. All of it, its so well done.
Btw, its the second time i'm watching your content and i loved the way you capture the little things that i struggle to tell my friends because i think its just some fangirl opinion, but i'm glad its not, we just apreciate the details. (sorry my english, its not first language)

I am not sure what cinematography is, but if you mean beautiful landscapes and poignant images like them riding the horse with the sun shimmering around them as they slowing ride into the distance; I totally agree. You can feel something building while they enjoy their quiet tranquil ride through the countryside.

This show requires the viewer to have an understanding for well-written literature, an understanding and appreciation for the art of *subtlety,* *patience,* and ability to latch onto the little things and then view them all collectively in retrospect. So, in order to appreciate this show and not turn into one of the haters, you've got to *analyze* and *dissect* each moment. This is not a show that holds your hand and explains everything to you in black and white for you to appreciate; this is a show that requires observation, analyzation, and an ability to interpret the most discrete actions and words.

I don't understand the people who complain about it being slow. You appreciate the climax when it is slowly drip feeded through these open, character-bonding episodes.
