I grew up hunting, fishing, and trapping along the rails, and walking the rails to get to towns. Doing so was common out in the country when I was young. It's still pretty common today. I lived in a tiny farm town that had a grain elevator at the center. Freight trains stopped almost daily to pick up grain, or to offload other things the grain elevator needed. In the fall, when corn and soybeans were harvested, the grain elevator ran almost all night, and farmer brought wagons of grain pulled by tractors until two or three in the morning. The sound of these tractors, of the train whistles, and the idling freight train engines, was loud but beautiful, and never bothered my sleep, even though we lived just fifty yards from the grain elevator and the tracks. As kids, we'd talk to the engineers, brakemen, and caboose men for hours while the trains sat on the side track beside the elevator, waiting for the train cars to be loaded. As teens, the engineer would let us ride in the engine or caboose to the next town east or west. East was eighteen miles, and west was seven, or, if we wanted, to the next town after that, which was about nineteen miles. That was his limit for hitchhikers. We always had to walk back along the track to get home, but we were young, and it was an easy walk, and great fun. We seldom got to town, so we made a day of it.
WOW, 70 years of age! I would have guessed the early 50s, very impressive indeed! Congratulations Kenneth, may you live for many, many fine years tome come in the great outdoors, take care!
find this hard to believe Ken but in the early to mid seventies, a large portion of Orange county, ca., where I live, was corn fields, strawberry fields, orange trees, avocado trees and melons. The Union Pacific R.R. rad cris cross all around us. We use to still see real Hobos get off the trains and cook food in the groves. As a kid, I took can food to some, ate lunch with them right off a camp fire! We use to jump the trains all the time. One kid that jumped a train with me, was too scared to jump back off when the train built speed. I saw him disappear down the tracks. He showed up the next day, He rode all the way to the L.A. yard and police called his father. Great times as a kid. Enjoyed your video and the memories it brought back to me. Now days the fields and most of the tracks are all gone.
PHARRAOH Thanks for sharing your experience. Good memories. Times have changed...but hobos are still around. I've run into several live in the nearby forests.Take care, Ken
Actually, he took more than memories --- Mr. Kramm took other people's garbage. Shortsighted swine who use the outdoors as their personal amusement park, then trash it. We could live in something akin to paradise on earth if the world were full of respectful, generous spirits like Kenneth Kramms!
@@jackkennedy_1963 think about that being done on the scale of corporations and entire seas. That's what's going on. So sad, that not even an individual can stop littering.

i have to say you are one special person and i truly mean that. an inspiration to so many. i would be lucky to have the chance to share a fire with you and i hope i get to one day. this video is living proof that you just need to get out and have fun. no excuses needed. i bet that swim felt amazing. it was an honor to have the opportunity to work on that staff. gives me true joy. glad you like it.
Ken , your so pure in your love of nature , camping and hiking. Such a great inspiration . If I'm not hiking or camping . I'm reading something or watching a video about bushcraft. I feel such positive karma when watching your videos. You fill my and my wife's heart full of joy . Just to know that a person like you exists in this life time . Much of the bushcraft community feel the same way If he wants to go out and play camp that's fine . But actually claim to have a bushcraft channel. He never lost his ferro rod he just had no real skill in bushcraft. He's a phoney . A wonderful gift that was well deserved, Kenneth. What an interesting and enjoyable video. I would love to Hobo hike and camp. I made a hiking staff/defensive weapon from a length of bamboo. It would be better served to convert it to carry a bindle. On one end I can mount a Cold Steel knife with the hollow handle; the other hollow end of the staff stores a survival kit and a set of chopsticks. The chopsticks rattle loudly when I'm on a bear congested trail. The end is capped with an old Rx medicine bottle that is wrapped with 10 feet of duct tape. The handle part is wrapped with about 20 feet of 550 paracord and a loop for a hand hold when thrusting the spear forward. My backyard testing area is actually called 'Hobo Camp" that one of my friends jokingly named it. It's between two perfectly distanced trees for a hammock; a rope tied between the trees has a camo tarp set up. I constructed a fire pit to test my stoves...I test my gear before going on any adventure. Gear breakdown is a pet peeve of mine on the trail. Love your videos Kenneth, as they are a great source of learning and entertainiment.
Ken, I have watched and rewatched your video's almost from your beginning on RUclips. I love the historical perspectives, the educational information, and actually everything. You're an inspiration and a delight!

I always enjoy your videos. Both entertaining and informative. I wish at 42 that I was 1/2 as active in the outdoors as you are at 70. You are an inspiration to many people. My daughter and I are just starting our outdoor journey, and I use your videos as inspiration to get out there and enjoy the outdoors. Perhaps one day our paths will cross.
Eli Silverman Hi Eli. Thanks for watching and commenting. Your feedback means a great deal to me. You're absolutely being outdoors is a journey. Take one step at a time and enjoy. I do hope our patch cross. Often I meet folks on the trail who say, "don't I know you; aren't you the guy on RUclips.... Take care and be safe, Ken
wow very interesting way to enjoy nature ken...with this old style bindle.. very interesting setup it seems that u really enjoyed the bushcraft meetup in may,,. thanks for this demonstration greetings Harry
I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now and they are technically very good, but most of all I enjoy your love for nature. That last part of you picking up the trash from other campers and taking it out is great. Thanks for helping create a conscience of conservation and for taking us in your adventures. I would live to join you guys on next years spring meeting. Best Regards
They are a great group of guys... I wish I clda been there... Happy late bday my young buddy Ken... Thats one of the coolest walking sticks I ever seen!!!
Absolutely awesome, what's not to like about this video. This how many lives for many years. Thank you, sir, for taking us along for the walk, and a nice digital campfire chat. I'm subscribing.
Happy birthday! (somewhat belated) And awesome video as always. I didn't see anyone mention this, so I thought I'd add a little historical note that this was also how the Roman legions carried their kit. They had a 6' long pole called a furca for their bindle, and when they stopped for a moment they could rest the end on the ground to get the weight off their feet and lean on the staff without taking the bindle off their shoulders. Anyone who knows anything about Rome knows that they didn't do inefficient. The bindle worked for the legions for centuries. Pretty high recommendation!
***** Awesome. I was not aware of this history. Thank you for adding this note. As you say, nothing was done inefficiently by the Roman legions. Thumbs up my friend!
Beautifully assembled video Ken. You are always an inspiration my friend. I always leave your videos with a sense of peace and a longing to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Well done sir. Peace, Shane
Read a lot of Huck Fin as a kid and in one of the illustrations he had a bindle over his shoulder so it's become a symbol of travel/movement/freedom, never thought I'd see someone using one in my time though, great stuff!!!
evenin, Ken; This was a real treat 2 follow along on. That Birthday Staff sure has all & More than 1 needs. Very thoughtful of all who were involved with this. A Constant reminder on all your wonderful outings U share with us here, Friend. Happy Trails From The Maritimes In Canada ATB Terry God Bless
T.W. Milburn Thanks Terry. I always appreciate your comments. Being outdoors is wonderful and I'm glad that my videos inspire others. Take care, my friend. ATB Ken
congratulations on your birthday.Loved the staff. Thanks for another good vidio. Your vidios always make me a little happier and more knowlagble. thanks regards
It seems to me that you had pretty much the same items in your Bindle as you would in a backpack. I'm glad you brought this to our attention, Ken. I never thought of camping with a Bindle, but, when the weather cools a bit, I'll give it a try.
Great staff, congratulations. Actually, it is known where the term "Hobo" got started. It got started during the depression where men without homes, jobs or money rode the trains (now criss-crossing the country) without paying. These men sought a form of a "brotherhood of the rails", real or imagined. Men naturally gathered in camps near the rails and would greet each other with "Hello Brother", much like men do today with "Hey Man" or "Hey Bro". Slang being what it is, this was shortened to "Ho Bo" as sort of an in-thing. Soon the men themselves were being referred to as Hobos, and their camps were Hobo Camps, or in their parlance, "Jungles". It was a rough, dirty and dangerous life, but jobs were scarce. They sought work...sometimes.
I absolutely loved this Kenneth - yeah peace to you. I experienced peace throughout and although it was a tough life for the original hobo's and there was much hardship and violence I'm certain there were many that experienced bliss and beauty on the trail also. That staff was awesome. Take care. Mark
Thanks Mark. I agree that it was a tough life for the origional hobos and at the same time, there is bliss and beauty on the trail, as you say. The staff has a special place in my heart, and on occasion I take it hiking and remember goood times. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Peace, Ken
Great video Ken. I think this is the sort of video I like best - simple camping. Always a joy to watch. I keep telling Sandy beards are good, but I don't think he'll be allowed to keep his! Very best wishes, Noel
Thanks for reminding people to go for hobo walks on trails not rails. It's important to remind people to stay off the trains. 😜 I absolutely love your staff/hobo stick. I've thought of ditching the bulky backpack for something similar.
What a great video and a great bunch of friends for that great gift. Keep up the good work cant wait to watch more of your videos. Also subscribed. Thanks again.
Loved it!! That staff was a great proof of concept, and obviously a fantastic gift. I agree with Wiltshire Man re the lighter and it's purpose in the sanitary pack. As always some great ideas for many of us to try out. Loved the swim in the lake and the torch. Hobo can opener is a little bit messy. Having seen that, I would probably place something over my knees. E.g. Turn the big garbage bag inside out and use it as an apron. :-D Thanks for sharing. Cheers & atb
ShazBoo BookOwl Thanks for watching and commenting. This was the second time form me to use the hobo can opener. The first time, it wasn't messy; I just opened the lid. This time, I was surprised it took to open the lid, so I banged it on the corner of the brick... and it spend with a splash. I like your idea for an apron... Yes, that big garbage bad would have made a nice apron! ATB my friend. ....ken
Great video. I've seen bindles in cartoons when I was a kid and in Depression era photos and never knew it had a name. Always learn new things from your videos.
Kenneth thank you for showing such varied outdoors ideas. Every time I watch your video's, I both smile and learn something. You show innovation and a stewardship of the land. thank you!
Excelente, excelente Ken,disfruto mucho de sus videos, los veo varias veces para aprender mas.Me gustaría de ser posible un video en el cual nos enseñes a hacer varios nudos prácticos para amarre con el paracord. Saludos mi estimado amigo.
Ken , Happy Birthday my friend. I would have never guessed you are 70. Being out in nature is keeping you youthful. The lighter is for lighting a fire , right ? Do I win ? Awesome under water video Ken. I watch all these bushcraft videos on my flat screen TV , using a chromeCast and my cell phone or computer. Does anyone else do this ? Great video as usual my friend 👍 Peace
Bryan Resch Thanks Bryan. For me, nature is relaxing and rejuvenating .... perhaps its keeping me young. the lighter lights a fire (probably of the paper I used in the sanitary package)... You win my friend. Yes, people use many different devices to watch RUclipss. About 5% of the 6,000 views my channel receives every day come from people using TVs.... according to RUclips Analatits. ATB, Ken
It is a very nice video. I've never seen before open up an cane only with an stone like you do.Sorry about my bad enlish, its bin a long time i wrote or spoke english. Thanks for showing us this video.Very very nice.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated my friend. Don't worry about your english. The fact that you've watched and commented on a video that is not your native language means a great deal to me. Take care, ken
That is one of the most awesome gifts I've ever seen. Your videos (and you) inspire me, teach me and make me want to get outside as often as possible. If that was your intention then you SCORED! Do the leaves from the American Beauty berries ward of skeeters? Why did you not put the can of beans directly on the fire instead of messing up your cup? Is the bindle better than bear? I cannot imagine that it is.. Thank you .. I enjoyed this video very much.
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs

And the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew
And of whiskey, too
You can paddle all around 'em
In a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again,
As soon as you are in

Thanks!
you really deserve that staff mr sun shine its a joy to watch your channel
I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now and they are technically very good, but most of all I enjoy your love for nature. That last part of you picking up the trash from other campers and taking it out is great.
Thanks for helping create a conscience of conservation and for taking us in your adventures.
I would live to join you guys on next years spring meeting.
Best Regards
Alejandro A Your feedback means a great deal to me Alejandro. Thanks for watching my videos ad taking time to comment. Take care, Ken

+Will An Thanks ...ken
+Wasteland Seven I forgot all about that bit of info .
I could not understand anything you said, but I enjoyed every minute! Thank you Kenneth!
***** Smiling Annemieke. Be safe, my friend. ....ken

Greetings Ken, I love your simple style of camping... Please keep them rolling....
Elvin A Millan Thanks Elvin... Stay tuned, my friend ....ken

Paul Britton Hi Paul. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Much appreciated. Have a good week ahead. ATB, Ken
It seems to me that you had pretty much the same items in your Bindle as you would in a backpack. I'm glad you brought this to our attention, Ken. I never thought of camping with a Bindle, but, when the weather cools a bit, I'll give it a try.
Kevin S Thanks for watching and commenting Kevin!
Great video Ken. Love the simplicity yet you always seem to be comfortable.
Thank you professor Kramm. When I go to Texas to visit family I would love to meet you. Take care
Thanks Wayne...
I wish health and peace to your life my friend and give us great video. Love from Greece.
Peace, Ken
A pleasure to comment Ken. It was fabulous! Good to hear you take the staff out. These links are special.
Great video Ken. I think this is the sort of video I like best - simple camping. Always a joy to watch.
I keep telling Sandy beards are good, but I don't think he'll be allowed to keep his!
Very best wishes,
Noel
***** Thanks Noel!
Thanks for reminding people to go for hobo walks on trails not rails. It's important to remind people to stay off the trains. 😜
I absolutely love your staff/hobo stick. I've thought of ditching the bulky backpack for something similar.
What a great video and a great bunch of friends for that great gift. Keep up the good work cant wait to watch more of your videos. Also subscribed. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and subscribing Big Mike. Much appreciated. ...ken
Thanks for sharing.
ATB my friend. ....ken
Damn, 70 years old? Hope I'm in that good shape when I'm 50. Your (Ken's) condition is your best advertisement .

Great video as usual my friend 👍
Peace
I enjoyed this video very much.
... well deserved Kenneth, you have inspired a series of followers. An original:)
Switcher Thanks@!
Thanks for sharing... I look forward to doing this soon.
i really like your videos on camping and hiking, throw away the hobo can opener rock ,and get a p 38 can opener you can put on a car key chain
Great video Kenneth...and I found some beans in the pantry :)
Best darn hobo I've seen in a while. Thanks again, Ken. See ya in the next one..............................Ross
