K I changed the title slightly since apparently too many people lack the ability to comparatively reason with subjective perspective on "value". The whiners have won this battle, but don't get used to it.... my salty rage only grows. *evil laugh*
It costs a fortune yes, but other laptops that have 120hz panels and 1060s sell for way more than this thing, not to mention the fact that it's a really high quality product and extremely thin, but of course the pc building community can't comprehend this value for money in terms of gaming laptops. "muh dur why would you get a gaming laptop when you can build a gaming desktop"
Axiomatic I see where you're coming from... but it also DOESNT make it NOT a fortune because someone else says it's a lot of money. Perspective and relevance is everything. I feel this audience is willing to let $1500 desktop slide and call it a great middle ground budget (because I'm asked for build lists with that budget every day) but when it comes to laptops they are more willing to wave their hands and scream that this amount is insanity. It's a double standard
I currently use a light gaming laptop as my only computer. The thing is, a good laptop will still be a decent laptop 4 years from now, so I'd say that getting a high-performance laptop is less of a waste than people think (so long as the physical hardware lasts). I'm still using a Lenovo Y500 that I bought off ebay 3 years ago, and it's still going strong.
True. I acutally just built-up and old optiplex with an i7, and even though it's *9 years old*, it's still pretty good for general use after tossing a 750 ti in it.
Well, I has an i7 870 CPU, so I think I know where the bottleneck will be. Also, I wanted to keep costs low, and because of BIOS/UEFI incompatibilities, I had to use an older card. I initially tried an RX 460, but it didn't work with a "legacy" bios, hence why I needed to go for the more compatible 750.
Well, TBH, I don't think most people are spending much more than $1,000 on a laptop. A very small set of people would actually need something much more powerful than this.
LazerLord10 1k for a laptop with similar power is very rare my friend. especially ones with this build quality. there is a laptop by dell that's around a grand but the colors on it are horrid. pay an extra 500 bucks and you get an amazing laptop with great build quality and power
I have a gaming laptop and a gaming desktop. I bought my gaming laptop because I deployed twice, and wanted to have something to do in my downtime that wasn't just browsing facebook. My gaming laptop served me well, and still goes strong to this day. As soon as I got back from my second deployment, I built myself a nice gaming PC which I am currently using. I think gaming laptops will always have a market with College kids, and deployed soldiers. They are obviously a bit more expensive than building a PC yourself, even when you add in the PC peripherals you need, but they are very convenient to have if you're on the move a lot. I don't understand why they get so much hate... And their value has become better and better as the components inside continue to get better. If you can afford it, then go for it.
Pretty Henry I got this laptop 2 months ago , buy the 120hz panel if u like playing games cause is awesome , performance is very good and u can find a great deal on Amazon if u search for Excaliburpc with bag and everything for 1800USD
I'd argue $1,500 is not a fortune for you if you're in the market to buy a gaming machine or parts of any kind, mainly because you're already spending money on superfluous things like PC gaming. Can you not afford it at the moment? Maybe, but you don't need it, either. And just because you can't afford it at the moment doesn't mean it costs a "fortune."
ChairmanMaus A 20k car is a fortune for someone who is used to 5k dollar cars. We're talking about prices relative to the average product, not necessarily the overall amount because we can say the same thing about literally anything else. A very expensive item exists, but you can get one for less which will obviously be seen as a fortune, it doesn't matter much what it offers because at the end we're just looking at the price for people who dont have bank.
@Calabi-Yau Manifold Look, you're on a tech youtube channel that features gaming-focused products listed with US prices. If you're interested in buying anything featured on this channel, you have disposable income that you don't mind blowing on a seriously unnecessary hobby (all things considered). If you're in the market for a gaming laptop, you should also expect to blow a bare minimum of $800 on a setup with a 1050 or 1050ti. And if you're willing to blow $800 on a gaming laptop, then $1,500 is most certainly NOT a fortune for you. Especially since the $1,500 model provides you with much better performance/$. If you aren't in the market for a gaming laptop or feel you could never afford this product, then maybe $1,500 is a fortune to you. But then why are you coming on this channel and complaining about the price when all Jay was doing was reviewing the product? That's what I don't get. Please explain.
ChairmanMaus I really don't mind to elaborate how ignorant and narrow-minded that statement was. Maybe you're able to check your flawed logic yourself, though.
This is a very reasonable price for a laptop this size with the specs. Now Apple's notebooks are good for office use, perhaps some video editing work, but is a potato at gaming. If someone is going to pay 2.5k on those for those particular use cases, then I don't see the problem with paying 1.5k for a general use laptop. As always amazing video Jay! Keep them coming!
Max! I Would love to know how you feel the heat of the laptop in your personal experience. Because i`m looking for a gaming laptop but im really thinking and looking for the best option.
I picked one of these up for $1200 on a newegg special about 2 months ago. It's a badass laptop for its ridiculously slim chassis. If you repaste it the CPU will NEVER go above 73*c and if you run ThrottleStop with a 165mV undervolt, the CPU will stay a nice 56*c without fans running and 69*c running prime95. Doing this will also remove the TDP wall that it'll run into when it's allowed to run at its rated voltage. I also overclocked the GPU by 225mhz core and 400mhz memory. The GPU never goes above 76*c and doesn't throttle. The built in DAC/AMP is also really impressive and drives my DT1770 Pro's nicely. All in all it really is a badass laptop and totally worth the money even at the higher $1600 street price. And yes, $1600 IS cheap/affordable, I agree with JZ on this and I'm a college student! If you can't swing that kind of money then you really need to stop spending money on frivolous crap and get your budget on point. No excuses people!
mangoKush12 Because of portability. This isn't a 10lb monster, it's a 5lb slim and versatile work station that can also be used to game on. I use this for solidworks and other engineering programs at school because our labs suck ass for hardware. Also, show me a build that can beat this thing in benchmarks that also has a nice keyboard, beautiful case, 100% adobe RGB display at 1080p 120hz w/ 5ms response, and a nice built in shielded DAC/AMP in the SABRE line from ESS. I bet you can't do it, I tried to when I was looking at laptops. A lot of people overlook all the aspects that go into a laptop, they're not just a computer to look at porn so you can beat your dick, it's an "all-in-one" that allows for portability and performance when and where you need it. Mind you, I'm speaking only on well built laptops such as this one or other intelligently engineered laptops that don't weight 15lbs or run on an integrated gpu.
VetteTTV12 " show me a build that can beat this thing" I spent < $1000 on my build including the monitor. I have a 24" asus 1080p 144hz 1ms monitor w/ Intel i5 3.2ghz, gtx 1070 gpu, 8gb ddr4 ram, SSD. safe to say my build shits all over the laptop for a cheaper price
Don D 2hr 30min before I repasted and undervolted, now I'm seeing about 3hr 30min. This is with 50% screen brightness and using Wi-Fi with multiple tabs open. Never tried to use it for anything else off the mains since I'm generally always by an outlet when using solidworks.
Bruh everyone saying this isn't cheap it is super cheap did you guys not listen to the specs find me or jayz2cents a laptop with a 1060 i7 7600hq and a 5ms 1080p 120mhz screen it's a steal you would probably pay almost the same price for a PC and a monitor also gaming laptops aren't supposed to be cheap they have to make the powerful cards stay cooled and make them tiny so I think this laptop is amazing for the price
some one i'm all for gaming laptop, but the proccessor is not the same, it's closer to the better i5 desktop cpu's than to the i7s. it should be noted that mobility is a big issue here and i can very well price mobility at about 400$ making this areally good deal.
Whoa! The stuff you did with the curtains and stuff really did the job. The sound on this video is miles ahead of the previous office-shot content. Great work Jay!
Absolutely love the new studio! The quality of your videos is definitely on the up (Not that they were ever really bad). Keep it up. Also, can't wait to see more studio updates. loving that series.
JayzTwoCents srsly do you know the value of 2000 dollar ? only like 5 laptops exist that are over 5000 dollar. If you gonna put not a fortune title put under 1000 dollar laptops. not a hater just a disappointed subscriber....
JayzTwoCents I completely agree with you. People who are saying "not a fortune" sarcastically aren't the ones this is marketed for. For a college student, especially an engineering student who needs a laptop with decent horsepower, $1500 for a laptop that can do everything you need AND game is a much better investment than a laptop for class and a desktop for gaming. And I'm saying this as someone who bought both instead of just one. There's a market for laptops and a market for desktops, and one does not "replace" the other. You can't pack up your desktop, monitor, and kb&m after every class/meeting. and for someone who will only have this as their computer, $1500 isn't a bad price. especially for MSI who puts out great quality. laptops will always be more expensive because they're very proprietary and a lot of design/engineering is involved. So stop giving Jay shit for a very good review because it isn't marketed towards you. not everyone can have a full desktop and a laptop for classes or work. This is a great compromise.
I have owned this specific laptop since November. It is an excellent travel machine and was very helpful in my 4 months of constant travel and moving around. Once I got settled I built a new machine primarily due to the heat generated. I would constantly get temps over 90 on GPU while gaming. Good for light use and travel, but not an everyday machine. Power brick is annoying but they all are.
Guys you miss the point.. i have that laptop and i can say it's a beast for the money you give. Obviously there are a little bit cheaper versions than MSI, e.g Asus has a similar laptop but haven't seen one with 120Hz screen. Now people will say "but you can build a better pc with that money", well yeah but can you pick up that pc in the plane on your lap, can you travel with it every day ? No you can't, that's why there are gaming laptops and this one is pretty good for the price. I was suprised that Jayz's MSI didn't go over 80C as mine does pretty often when gaming
Lubo Chavdarov any regrets over buying the laptop? I'm very tempted. How is it with prolonged use and are the fans too noisy when using office applications or web browsing to use in a public area without being obnoxious? If you could answer these it would really help me make up my mind. The price doesn't bother me, I've saved up more than enough money for it, but I want to able to use it at college, instead of having to buy another laptop further down the line for college work.
+Richard Round Hi, first of all for me it's a great pc as a whole because it will last me a couple of years. Fans aren't noisy if you don't game, if u put the fans at auto speed for browsing and using light softwares it isn't noisy at all. For gaming there's no way being quiet as you know. It handles all softwares and games like a champ. I am usually using it for 3d applications and some gaming now and again. There's a couple of problems you can encounter: the left hinge of my laptop broke and i will be replacing it using my guaranty, next is the sound which is not perfect and in some laptops you can hear crackling noise sometimes. If you want to learn more from other people you can type in google "msi gs73vr thread" and the first search should be a: "The official MSI GS73VR Owner's lounge" where you can find more opinions from people who have the same laptop. Good luck :)
Lubo Chavdarov Hey, i had a question. Is it okay to have your ac adapter plugged in your msi gaming laptop all time? cuz, i play games most of time and i need to have it plugged in for better performance, but i am worried that it will kill the battery life faster.
Hi Snach. You don't have to worry about it being plugged in all the time. There's a feature in modern batteries that allows the battery to not charge itself to 100% because that will worn it out. If you hover your mouse over the battery icon on the taskbar you will probably see a phrase ''plugged in, not charging'' thus meaning that you are using your battery and MSI will let the battery charge level vary. Not sure if I explained it very well but you can read this guy's response - www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2439202/msi-gs60-plug-fully-charged.html . Also don't forget to calibrate your battery every 3 months from the dragon centre :)
Acer's Predator 17 with the 6700HQ and 1060 6GB is only $1199 at Microcenter and $1350ish on Amazon. The "slimmer" profile of this one, loud fans, and extremely marginal CPU spec bump does NOT warrant tacking on $200+ to the price of a laptop in direct competition with the Predator 17.
Abraham i got the acer pred g9, it's thicker and bulky, but fck that, it's amazing, build quality is great imo, sounds way quieter than this MSI, you can oc display to 100hz from 75stock...portable, but uncomfortably portable :D temps after 5hours of gaming of high demanding titles: max 80° cpu, max 70° gpu. if you don't get this temps, replace it immediately, RMA or repaste(got to dismantle laptop); hope this helps.
Ayy Lmao. Completely overkill for 5-10% slower 1060 laptop setup. But no, it's a 75HZ panel overclockable to 100Hz, i believe. Even if it were 75HZ flat, it would be perfect for the 1060 6GB. High refresh rate panels at 1080p are cheap. Lets not pretend it's a high cost feature anymore. Not at 1080p.
Selling point is portability; slimmer isn't necessarily just for style. All metal chassis as well, so build quality is a lot better than the predator. Sure, cooling may take a hit, but this is for people who prioritize portability over cooling. Target market being the traveling gamer. I wouldn't carry around a Predator 17 in my backpack if I was going on a road trip. Much rather get kicked in the back by Ryu. Probably less painful.
Weirdo You still can't promote something as "not expensive" and then proceed to say it's $1500+. Besides, since when was a Predator 17 heavy? I bet perceivably they weigh around the same and that was just a funny exaggeration.
I have a slightly earlier laptop, the GS60 Ghost Pro. It has a 4710HQ CPU and GTX 970M GPU. That laptop is a beast and I love it. Sure it has some fan whine and it's a fingerprint magnet, but it also has amazing portable power. It also helps that the thing looks fantastic and draws all kinds of compliments (which makes me happy but also makes me worried it's about to be stolen).
Tony Hamilton *NEED them for travel I ride my motorcycle to a friends house 25 miles away and i carry a thin monitor, a mouse and keybaord and a small itx build in a backpack!! Laptops are for people that dont know how small desktops can be, or they need a thin skinny ass package to fit under their clothes in their luggage
ShadowOfDeath24 No, I'm fully aware how small itx systems can be. I'd rather have a complete package with no access wires or need to carry multiple things. That just seems completely ridiculous to me. Also, people that "travel" aren't going 25 miles to a Lan party at their friends house. You have a far less than common use case than many people that *actually* travel.
ShadowOfDeath24 and than theres power, I travel public transportation a lot, I can't really take all of that on my backpack. the mobility really is worth it for me
Small ITX PC's can be a bitch to build. Not only that, but you're still dealing with a bunch of wires that are inconvenient and annoying as hell. Speaking of wires, with a laptop you can do stuff unplugged. I don't recommend gaming unplugged, but if you need to do stuff like web browsing or working on documents or something, then it's perfect. Now you can't exactly conveniently use a small ITX build for replying to an email at an airport, can you?
I hate people who say how this is still expensive. this laptop is one of the best I've seen yet and its only around 1500 bucks. don't expect a laptop to be 50 bucks and it has a 1080 ti and 144 hz monitor. if your so poor to buy a laptop that's 1500 bucks then just don't buy it. don't bitch about the price if its so low already.
No one has sense enough to expect such hardware inside even a 600.00 laptop. but 1500 bucks and how much it costs to put the hardware it has inside and load an OEm copy of Windows in it for 1500.00. That is still too high. This is 2017, not 2010.
tpcs Guitarocker493 Dude, for 1,500$ you get a i7, GTX 1060, 16GB DDR4, a 256 M.2 SSD, 1TB HD and a 120Hz 1080p monitor, and all of this compacted into a thin laptop. "Compact" and "Powerful" are two words hard to say thogether.
NovaTastic I could easily say a car costs 1 mil but the one for 300k "doesn't cost a fortune" same comparison just like your argument the 300k car won't have all the bells and whistles compared to the 1 mil car your delusional
Ninwing the msi has a 1060, an i7, better keyboard, better screen for sure, better thinness. Need i continue? This msi is on equal ground with the dell. If youre on a budget the 1050ti makes the dell much better for u obviously
I'm glad more and more companies are going with more premium material for their devices. Metal bodies on devices just feel so much better than the plastic counterparts.
I've had this laptop for about 8 months....love it!! Use it for school 75% of the time. Gaming when I travel. Turn brightness to low. Turn off Bluetooth. Don't open web browser (shouldn't be roaming the internet during lectures). Laptop lasts 8-9 hours.
Titan the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 gaming series or something, I plan on getting it during the summer when I can actually get a job. The base model is pretty good but the second one gets a 1050ti which I would get if it came with a 1tb HDD like the first one. Acer has the VX15 which seems to also be similar to the second model of the Inspiron
Sager has a 15.6 inch laptop with a GTX 1070, which I was actually able to overclock by 200 MHz. It is $1,700 for the base model and is only about 1.25 inches thick. Working great for me for the past 5 months.
SchaussTheHouse that's not even the point. Relatively it's still up there with other laptops that are called expensive. The actually good model costs more than the highest end razer.
@JayzTwoCents This was a laptop that I am going to purchase in a month and I'm so glad to see someone I could trust my wallet to review it. You've set aside all my worries of this sff thin gaming little beast Thanks! For the great vid.
I had a gs73vr 6 stealth pro edition and gave it to ma sister after i got pc, man it was and still a beast! Used to play all games on it, and 120 fps monitor was insane for its era and price, nostalgia 😊😊😊😊
I have the one with 512 nvme and 2tb hdd, first real gaming laptop I have owned and I couldn't be happier. I thought the power was finally close enough to its desktop counter parts, and it really is.
thoth111 A fucking stone brick with a ram stick, a ssd and a mouse duct taped to the side is a better value than a MAC...and surprisingly more capable!!!
Tyler M Comparing mid range hardware in a laptop to other laptops that are over $5k.. "It doesn't cost a fortune" Well then, I bet the Nizmo 370Z he has doesn't cost a fortune either since there's supercars out there that cost over a million..
It's true. As sports cars go, the 370Z actually is pretty cheap. And I mean actual sports cars, not some stupid kid with a front wheel drive Honda and a fart can exhaust who thinks its a sports car.
Try to put an RX480/580 in a thin body like that and it will burn a hole in your laptop. Yes on the desktop side of thing the RX580 is definitely a better a buy, but Pascal efficiency is soooo good for laptop.
Then why is there no laptop with RX480/580? Because it's fucking power hungry, it draw more power than a GTX1080, plus you don't have the advantage of big cooler in a laptop, the poor thing would literally explode in a thin body like that. ApplePi ... I really doubt that, the only reason the RX580 is beating the 1060 is because of the couple hundred Mhz It gained over RX480, if you underclock it, you just lost any advantage. Also considering it draw atleast 50% more power than a 1060, I don't see it running cooler either. Maybe stock cooler vs custom cooler... but that's not fair lol.
i own the previous year model of this laptop with the 6700hq instead and its great and i ended up getting it for around 1300 with a free headset. Really happy with it so far and i can imagine this one is just as good.
People underrate laptops so much. The amount of engineering that goes into the production of a laptop is astonishing. People rage on and on about specs and performance when in reality some people appreciate portability as well! Great video Jay!
"doesn't cost a fortune" "Oh ok finally a good laptop for $700-800 that's powerful! Let me just get my debit card ready" "I'm sorry sir it seems your card has been rejected due to.. let's see... um, it says here 'insufficient funds" "What"
Got an Alienware 15 R3 w/ a 6700HQ and 1060 for $780 at microcenter. That store is a godsend. Seeing how similar specs as this laptop in the video go for $1500, I got a steal
Jacob Asmuth some people just need to sort out their priority. Don't even bother expecting a great gaming experience on a portable device if you can't afford that price. How about finding a decent job first?
"Fortune" is relative to other products in the same category. So no a 1500$ laptop with a lighter construction, 120hz panel, hardware specs of a 1300$ bulky laptop doesn't cost a fortune
Compared to my $7000 PC, $1500 is pretty much nothing. That kind of tech in a slim laptop? You're getting some pretty good value out of that. I'd pay $1500 for it if I wanted some portability. Now, Razer/Alienware pricing is a different story, stay away from those manufacturers. That's terrible price/performance. Pretty sure everyone knows that anyway.
Can you please explain how a lighter razer laptop has bad price/price performance, its essentially an ultrabook and has higher end specs. Alienware also fixed their shit with the 13" laptop
Got the MSI GE72 6QD Apache Pro (i7 6700hq w/ the 960M 2GB) and it's been a nice laptop for the time I've been owning it. Always enjoyed MSI's quality, I've used them for a good number of parts and builds in the past for desktops and never had any issues.
Fortune is relatively speaking. Not a fortune doesn't necessarily mean cheap. This isn't cheap; that's for sure, but it's not a fortune. Gaming laptops of this class can go up to $3000. That is with a GTX 1060, full metal body, lightweight construction and RGB keyboard. Products like the Razer Blade 14 is an example of a laptop of this class reaching up to 3000. THAT'S a fortune. This laptop, however, costs almost half of that, with a substantially bigger screen despite being about the same weight and the same specs. My rent costs $22500 every four months. That's a fortune, right? Even when there are houses going for $100000 a month?
And I've never said that you said that it was relative to you. You said that it was relative, and I was pointing out that it could also be relative to you. I was referring to ("Fortune is relatively speaking") your first line.
Honestly being a college student and wanting to do more video edit I love this, and it really doesn't cost a fortune, it's a huge investment still but a Macbook would ruin me like 2-3grand, and considering this is a full metal construction? I love that. I've always loved the metal construction for the macbook, good shit Jayz I think I know where my FA refund is going next semester, well this or the EVGA equivalent
I love my MSi. It has been a solid performer for three years now and it kicks ass with my HTC Vive. I use a cooling base with mine and keep the ventilation ports clean. Awesome machine that has traveled all over the world with me.
I am talking about the "hate" not the appearance or portability ! I hate laptops as much as i hate consoles < this might clear things up :D Ellie Goulding burn let these two things burn.
In Moldova $2000 is annual salary of Prezident Igor Dodon (also vote most handsome man north of Moldova River). Is largest fortune in Moldova! Jay why you not rekognize this? Therefore is unafford by me. Therefore is fortune! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Gah I can’t wait for mine to come in I’ve been saving for quite a while to get a good laptop and i have been looking at this one for a while and this video solidified my purchase jay, thanks!!!
Just bought the updated version of this with an Intel i7 8750H CPU, GTX1070 MaxQ 16 GB of DDR4 ram, 256 GB SSD and 2 TB of hard disk space. Cost me over $2500 and many people tell me that I could have got a much better desktop system but as I spend over 5 months a year working away from home I simply couldn't do any gaming if I didn't have an easy transportable Gaming laptop. I bought it to replace a 5 year old MSI GS70 Stealth pro on which the keyboard has started to fail and the fan has an almost constant rattle. I still haven't picked it up yet and looking forward to get my hands on it.
The beautiful thing about Laptops, it is much easier to find open-box, lightly used, and refurbished models. Really cuts down on the price. You can sometimes get a laptop refurbished for less than a desktop with the same specs. I remember I was off to college, I got a laptop with a 460 and i7 in it for 800 dollars. The MSRP was 1,300.
I got this one since one year (exactly the same but with the i7 6th generation ) and it's Perfect for everything ! It not heavy, it's powerfull, it's a thin laptop and it's easy To carry it to friends appartment in a backpack on a cycle or motobike. I realy love it. My big déception is the horrible sound and the heat. It can be very warm. A extern cooling system is needed for long hours of gaming. By the way. .. Nice video !! 😉
Will you ever cover budget laptops? Maybe more geared toward light gaming but more mainstream office workstation duties? Maybe even special ones that are a bit more ideal for traveling?
I'm only purchasing one for college, my dad agreed that desktop is much cheaper and better but I'm going to need something portable. This laptop is sick and I'm going to buy this one maybe.
I agree with you. I bought an Alienware 15R4 at the start of the year. It's a beast of a Laptop for the size of it compared to old Alienware laptops. That MSI has the extract same components in it.
The formfactor and clean look is really nice, worth some fingerprints imo and people complaining over the price, its reasonable for the product you're getting. Oh and would love to see some videos about chassies, which you prefer etc. Overall great video Jay keep it up.
I have the gs63vr and it suprised me with how good it runs games. I play the witcher 3 on ultra settings and have no problem with it. Also a great laptop to run CAD
I agree! It definitely sparkles to a specific market. But being able to bring your computer everywhere is nessesary for audio professionals and creatives on the go, so it's awesome seeing this kind of thing being pushed forward. Btw, you forgot to mention the built in gold plated 192kh DAC on this or I/O. We are definitely spooled this generation, the baseline GPU even in mobile form can wipe the floor with what ever you throw at it. We really don't need to frame snob do we ?
Just bought the Alienware AW15R3 and I'm very happy with it, very similar specs and price. This MSI was a close competitor. At the end of the day, I preferred the build quality and extra battery life of the Alienware over the MSI. The trade off is extra weight (almost 8 lbs). Both are very good machines
May I suggest you to add benchmarks for the laptops as you do for GPUs? That would be a nice addition, as, in the end, they're meant to game. Of course CPU and RAM are going to vary, but, as a laptop can't be upgraded much, I think it's a fair comparison
I owned a G63VR for a week before returning it. DPC latency on this was absolutely insane, couldn't even watch a RUclips video while browsing, it stuttered nonstop. Well, the killer NIC was causing gigantic hardpage faults, it doesn't matter the fact that you can replace it, it's still ridiculous buying something like this and having to replace a component for it to become usable.
I agree that seems like a pretty good price for that laptop. This generation of gaming laptops is the first to be worth it in my opinion. I took the plunge on an Alienware 15 r3 with an i7-6700hq, 1070, and 120hz 1080p panel and I have been very satisfied. It has been a nice supplement to my gaming desktop.
I'm glad you finally reviewed this!! The MSI stealth series have been on my watch list for quite a while :) Based on specs and reviews, it's my personal favorite for the slim profile class. Great review!
I've got the 15" GS63VR and I actually prefer using it to my GTX 1070 desktop. I have a lapdesk that I can use to game very comfortably on the couch or in bed and since it's so light and thin it's incredibly easy to take with me.
HELP! I bought ASUS GL502VS with a gtx 1070 in it. The problem is that it gets too hot. CPU usually at 99 (sometimes 100) degree c and gpu at 90. I think both my gpu and cpu are thermal throttling and I cant find a way to solve the problem. I tried using my friend's Cooler Master Notepal X2 Laptop Cooling Pad but the results were the same. I think the problem is as the cooling pad cools my hardware, the hardware works faster since its not thermal throttling idk. Can anyone help me with the situation? Please?
Xpertgamingtech Well if its overheating the only thing you really can do is get a laptop cooler. My only question is the room temperature really high in the room when it over heating? That can effect the laptop temperature. You could contact ASUS support team and tell them it keeps getting to hot, and see what they have to say.
You didn't overclock anything right? If everything is stock and its overheating a lot, its there fault. Hopefully they actually help you and don't just say, "Are laptop run warm, you could go get a cooler".
I have an MSI gt73vr as my only computer. It was about double the cost of this gs73vr. I need a computer that I can lug between work and home and still has enough horsepower to play games and run photoshop, premier, etc. without choking. It is also very convenient to be able to move my computer from room to room of my house without any hassle. Don't get me wrong, I still love the added performance of a well built desktop, but could only afford to get the one computer that would meet all my needs. When money permits, I'll build a nice desktop system, but I doubt I'll stop using my laptop for a lot of things at home.
I agree with jay here. 1500 for this lap top isn't bad. When you add up those parts plus the cost of a monitor with those specs you run about the same. I remember when 1500 got you a lap top that was a 750 pc when compared by specs.
I agree that this seems like a good laptop and a good price for a gaming laptop. This laptop runs around $1550 at Amazon / Newegg currently. I would love to see what you thought could be bought as a desktop gaming rig with the same $1550 budget... and benchmark the two against each other. I think it would make for an interesting video.
This community really is the definition of first world problems
Axiomatic I see where you're coming from... but it also DOESNT make it NOT a fortune because someone else says it's a lot of money. Perspective and relevance is everything. I feel this audience is willing to let $1500 desktop slide and call it a great middle ground budget (because I'm asked for build lists with that budget every day) but when it comes to laptops they are more willing to wave their hands and scream that this amount is insanity. It's a double standard
JayzTwoCents i fuckin hate u
hahaha
I currently use a light gaming laptop as my only computer. The thing is, a good laptop will still be a decent laptop 4 years from now, so I'd say that getting a high-performance laptop is less of a waste than people think (so long as the physical hardware lasts). I'm still using a Lenovo Y500 that I bought off ebay 3 years ago, and it's still going strong.
LazerLord10 That goes for desktops as well.
True. I acutally just built-up and old optiplex with an i7, and even though it's *9 years old*, it's still pretty good for general use after tossing a 750 ti in it.
LazerLord10 Toss in a 1050ti even better!
LazerLord10 I see, the legendary 750 ti seems to get the job done lol.
BTW, it still costs ~$1,500.
LazerLord10 1500 bucks is amazing for a 120 hz 1060 6GB laptop. and remember that most laptops are 2500 bucks plus.
LazerLord10 $2200 to $2500 in Canada.
You need to look up the definition of most, my dude.
Impressed by how thin it is for a 17" laptop with those specs, not bad! Audio also sounds better since you added the curtains :)
Imagine AMD Cpu's in laptops, don't you think that would make the price a little lower?
TBH, I can't wait to see a mobile variant of Ryzen.
same
No they would overheat and explode
we wont know till they come out
Cairo Murphy Ded meme
1.4k for a gaming laptop is near nothin'
not saying i'd would buy it, but jay is right -most decent gaming laptops are easily 2k+
Okay the apex pro was here years ago haha
*940M cries in corner*
540M cries on opposite corner...
Karras Bastomi I love my 540m. I can get a whopping 3fps on Witcher 3 on low settings!
Karras Bastomi Fuck I would of killed myself.
Karras Bastomi
lol I went straight from a 540m to a 1070. literally 10+ times the frames
Intel HD cries outside
I need to buy a new laptop. It's been 5 years. I'm tempted Jay.
The spectre of missed frags whispers behind you:
"Buiiiild a desssskkktoopppp, wooooooooo~~~~~~"
"by the way I'm a ghoooooooost~~~~"
'Buy a cheap laptop and use steam in home streaming wooooooooo'
boldCactus let me just take my desktop to class
Russell Morton yea u can buy a 200$ google laptop lol, just stream the game from steam.
Pretty Henry I got this laptop 2 months ago , buy the 120hz panel if u like playing games cause is awesome , performance is very good and u can find a great deal on Amazon if u search for Excaliburpc with bag and everything for 1800USD
My definition of "Fortune" is slightly different then yours...
Angus1MacGyver By all means, please do elaborate.
Keep them coming!
not really think the MSI 17.3" GL72M Gaming Notebook is better specs and way lower priced, and i'm gittin it ha.
I have the gs73VR with a gtx 1070 and it’s a beast.
VetteTTV12 why even get a gaming laptop?? u could build a badass PC with much better hardware for $1200
mangoKush12 Because of portability.
How's the battery?
VetteTTV12 " show me a build that can beat this thing"
I spent < $1000 on my build including the monitor.
Then to support my claim I built a pc with the same specs has the laptop with a monitor pcpartpicker.com/list/
Here's the pc pcpartpicker.com/list/j8Tfcc
some one you built my exact pc..
You should of went with windows 10 home tbh
some one i'm all for gaming laptop, but the proccessor is not the same, it's closer to the better i5 desktop cpu's than to the i7s. it should be noted that mobility is a big issue here and i can very well price mobility at about 400$ making this areally good deal.
Whoa! The stuff you did with the curtains and stuff really did the job. The sound on this video is miles ahead of the previous office-shot content. Great work Jay!
Got to the fan sound bit in the video.
Heard a really loud fan.
Was like "HOLY SHIT THAT'S LOUD".
it was my own laptop......
this thing broke like crazy. I went through 4 keyboards, 2 sets of hinges and one screen. Absurd.
it costs 1.4k are you sure
Daniel Combs I guess why? 0.895k
☮Sike cheap man i wanna buy 3. For 1400 i can get a car lol that is a lot more fun then a laptop lol
☮Sike you realize that is what a MacBook costs right?? this is a great value laptop.
☮Sike still better than a MacBook
AaroS Hello finish guy order it from germany to finland it costs here around 1.600€
Absolutely love the new studio! The quality of your videos is definitely on the up (Not that they were ever really bad). Keep it up. Also, can't wait to see more studio updates. loving that series.
By far the best tech youtuber. Never hiding his emotions. I love this guy.. Fan for life.
Godless Old Gamer infinitely better than Austin and Luke
Gin Crose Alcalar Yes!
I still have to put this on my Things I Can't Afford List...
Lots of people losing their minds over the "doesn't cost a fortune" but today, you can literally buy $5000-$9000 laptops. I stand by my statement.
thats a very good price for what your getting in this laptop
JayzTwoCents srsly do you know the value of 2000 dollar ? only like 5 laptops exist that are over 5000 dollar. If you gonna put not a fortune title put under 1000 dollar laptops. not a hater just a disappointed subscriber....
agreed
You can also buy a car for $2,000,000, but that doesn't mean a $500,000 car doesn't cost a fortune :/
This seems like a good value for people that need to do production work on the go, but also want to play some modern games at the same time.
JAY THERE IS A GUY SPYING ON YOU! TURN AROUND!!!!!!!!!!
I FOUND THE BLACK GUY
Bro relax I got a GT 640 MLE no GTX a GT!
What the hell is he doing with view finder? What about the LCD display?
OMG WERE
I have owned this specific laptop since November.
Thank you for the reply. It was really helpful. It put some of my worries to rest.
Been subscribed for a couple of years now and the quality of your videos are so much more professional. Keep it up, the quality is amazing!
Does the predator 17 have a 120hz panel though? That's some expensive information you chose to leave out while comparing the laptops
I used to want a laptop. It'll be cheaper to upgrade a desktop. Gaming laptops are for gamers who love to travel, in my opinion.
Laptops in general are for people that need to travel.
Tony Hamilton
*NEED them for travel
I ride my motorcycle to a friends house 25 miles away and i carry a thin monitor, a mouse and keybaord and a small itx build in a backpack!!
I just got a GE63VR with 32RAM, 256SSD, 1TB HDD and GTX1070. Its awesome and super fast with everything it does.
Sadly, It's still 3k here in australia
This the same laptop? www.ple.com.au/Products/627035/MSI-GS73VR-7RF-240AU-Stealth-Pro-173-i7-Windows-10-Gaming-Notebook
Sure is
Wow $1500 my arse :/.Nah I knew it would be more here but I didn't think it would literally be nearly twice as much holy fuck....
Doesn't dell have a laptop for 800 with a gtx 1050
Titan ti
Titan the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 gaming series or something, I plan on getting it during the summer when I can actually get a job. The base model is pretty good but the second one gets a 1050ti which I would get if it came with a 1tb HDD like the first one. Acer has the VX15 which seems to also be similar to the second model of the Inspiron
Sager has a 15.6 inch laptop with a GTX 1070, which I was actually able to overclock by 200 MHz. It is $1,700 for the base model and is only about 1.25 inches thick. Working great for me for the past 5 months.
"Doesn't cost a fortune" $1,497.99 on amazon for the 15" model..
Game Maker Yeah that's still more than I'm willing for a decent laptop.
You're poor, it's ok
i just want a laptop that is at least on the lvl with the ps4 and x bone
SchaussTheHouse that's not even the point. Relatively it's still up there with other laptops that are called expensive. The actually good model costs more than the highest end razer.

@JayzTwoCents This was a laptop that I am going to purchase in a month and I'm so glad to see someone I could trust my wallet to review it. You've set aside all my worries of this sff thin gaming little beast Thanks! For the great vid.
Lets get right into the noose
I had a gs73vr 6 stealth pro edition and gave it to ma sister after i got pc, man it was and still a beast! Used to play all games on it, and 120 fps monitor was insane for its era and price, nostalgia 😊😊😊😊
Can it run Minecraft?
As we all know, Minecraft is the most demanding game on the market and I am sure that a GTX 1060 will not be able to run it below 200fps... lol
I have the one with 512 nvme and 2tb hdd, first real gaming laptop I have owned and I couldn't be happier. I thought the power was finally close enough to its desktop counter parts, and it really is.
Cheap!?...Okay JayzTwoMil
Never said cheap
thoth111 anything is a better bargain than Apple.
thoth111
A fucking stone brick with a ram stick, a ssd and a mouse duct taped to the side is a better value than a MAC...and surprisingly more capable!!!
Tyler M
Comparing mid range hardware in a laptop to other laptops that are over $5k.. "It doesn't cost a fortune" Well then, I bet the Nizmo 370Z he has doesn't cost a fortune either since there's supercars out there that cost over a million..
It's true. As sports cars go, the 370Z actually is pretty cheap. And I mean actual sports cars, not some stupid kid with a front wheel drive Honda and a fart can exhaust who thinks its a sports car.
wow jays videos are getting really good.
Try to put an RX480/580 in a thin body like that and it will burn a hole in your laptop.
Yes on the desktop side of thing the RX580 is definitely a better a buy, but Pascal efficiency is soooo good for laptop.
Benoit Levesque
You'd be suprised at how cooler and how more efficient AMD GPUs become at lower voltage with marginely lower clockspeeds.
ApplePi un der clo cked
i own the previous year model of this laptop with the 6700hq instead and its great and i ended up getting it for around 1300 with a free headset. Really happy with it so far and i can imagine this one is just as good.
If you think this laptop is alot of money, the monitor I bought costs 1,100$
Jom You cared him, because you replied

People underrate laptops so much. The amount of engineering that goes into the production of a laptop is astonishing. People rage on and on about specs and performance when in reality some people appreciate portability as well!
Great video Jay!
"doesn't cost a fortune"
"Oh ok finally a good laptop for $700-800 that's powerful! Let me just get my debit card ready"
"I'm sorry sir it seems your card has been rejected due to.. let's see... um, it says here 'insufficient funds"
"What"
mruybkye buy a dell inspiron xd
you see the way how my saving account and my debit card work is
mruybkye only 400 more, just save
Jay I play on the last gen of this laptop with a 960m and I love it. sure now the graphics are not even medium anymore but MSI does damn well!
I have an MSI Ghost Pro with the GTX 970M. It has amazing performance.
when did they redefine the meaning of "fortune".
Got an Alienware 15 R3 w/ a 6700HQ and 1060 for $780 at microcenter. That store is a godsend. Seeing how similar specs as this laptop in the video go for $1500, I got a steal
I came here to say bs
Lonely Hacker be safe?

Bologna Sandwich?
This is your first video watched by me. And bro you doesn't suck. You explain very class with better background music.
its 1500 fucking dollars thats a fortune.
Jacob Asmuth some people just need to sort out their priority.
Don't even bother expecting a great gaming experience on a portable device if you can't afford that price.
How about finding a decent job first?
Jacob Asmuth I mean I make around 60k a year but 2k is still to rich for my blood maybe it's cuz I already got a 1080ti and this model only has a 1060
"Fortune" is relative to other products in the same category.
Always enjoyed MSI's quality, I've used them for a good number of parts and builds in the past for desktops and never had any issues.
just because its a good value doesnt mean it "doesnt cost a fortune"
Weirdo "but it's not a fortune" *to you*. You said so yourself that it's all relative.
Relative *to other products of the same class in the market*. I never said it was relative to me.
And I've never said that you said that it was relative to you. You said that it was relative, and I was pointing out that it could also be relative to you. I was referring to ("Fortune is relatively speaking") your first line.
Err. Did you read your own comment? "Weirdo "But it's not a fortune" *to you*".
"You can build a pc for sooo much less!!!
just stop
I agree but you are losing the point: PORTABILITY

I love my MSi. It has been a solid performer for three years now and it kicks ass with my HTC Vive. I use a cooling base with mine and keep the ventilation ports clean. Awesome machine that has traveled all over the world with me.
Laptop to a PC gamer is pretty much A CONSOLE to a PC gamer.
DIY Tech with a screen, and mods, and customization, and portability, oh wait that's a pc
Laptop user is not console peasant, atleast it's just portable mini PC
I am talking about the "hate" not the appearance or portability ! I hate laptops as much as i hate consoles < this might clear things up :D Ellie Goulding burn let these two things burn.
Why the hate? I know newest laptops are expensive af but they are some like dell inspiron that are amazing for the price, i have one :p
DIY Tech You need to give laptop a shot. It's not as bad as console like you think
I like how the content is improving
In Moldova $2000 is annual salary of Prezident Igor Dodon (also vote most handsome man north of Moldova River). Is largest fortune in Moldova! Jay why you not rekognize this? Therefore is unafford by me. Therefore is fortune!
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
"handsome " ???!!! ARE YOU FUCKING SURE???!!!
OMG , I search his face , there's nothing handsome about that
Thank you for posting this. I appreciate it. This is something I've been wanting to see for a little while.
Spoiler *It costs a fortune.
Gah I can’t wait for mine to come in I’ve been saving for quite a while to get a good laptop and i have been looking at this one for a while and this video solidified my purchase jay, thanks!!!
"It doesn't cost a fortune"!But it costs more than $1.5K
For what it is, it's a pretty good price.
Sir Apollo compared to Apple or alienware its still a great deal
Just bought the updated version of this with an Intel i7 8750H CPU, GTX1070 MaxQ 16 GB of DDR4 ram, 256 GB SSD and 2 TB of hard disk space. Cost me over $2500 and many people tell me that I could have got a much better desktop system but as I spend over 5 months a year working away from home I simply couldn't do any gaming if I didn't have an easy transportable Gaming laptop. I bought it to replace a 5 year old MSI GS70 Stealth pro on which the keyboard has started to fail and the fan has an almost constant rattle. I still haven't picked it up yet and looking forward to get my hands on it.
blah blah blah is just another laptop, who cares, it's overpriced piece of junk.
Jack Moore lol salty he cant afford it
The beautiful thing about Laptops, it is much easier to find open-box, lightly used, and refurbished models. Really cuts down on the price. You can sometimes get a laptop refurbished for less than a desktop with the same specs. I remember I was off to college, I got a laptop with a 460 and i7 in it for 800 dollars. The MSRP was 1,300.
First
Congrats, You're Indeed First!
so close. 7th viewer
This laptop is just perfect. Not bulky at all ☺️
Jay, your videos are getting better and more professional. Keep it up, man!
I have a full tempered glass desktop. A gaming laptop is nearly a must if I want to go game while being away from home for an extended period of time.
Here where I live, the blasted thing cost around 2500 USD with the exact same spec. Bloody hell.
I got a GL502. About $1500 but it came with a 1070 and NVMe. Don't know why reviewers skip over these laptops, but mine's been pretty good.
"I need a new laptop."
"Hey Idiot! You know you can build a way more powerful desktop for the same price?"
"But I need a new laptop."
people can buy what the fuck they want lol
i am on the move a lot so i need a powerful laptop
I personally have the GS63vr, if you have any questions let me know and ill try to help
this is my current laptop for work and play, got it 2 yrs ago still fast and works great! i think this is the cheapest 4k screen at that time
I loved mine, until the hinge broke away from the lid. The build quality is a joke
Can back this up- I used the first iteration last year and just gave it to a Veteran. Played Xbox PlayAnywhere flawlessly and video Editing 🔥🔥
You could contact ASUS support team and tell them it keeps getting to hot, and see what they have to say.
yeehti thanks for the reply. No the room temperature is not that high and yeah i guess i could contact the support team
You didn't overclock anything right? If everything is stock and its overheating a lot, its there fault. Hopefully they actually help you and don't just say, "Are laptop run warm, you could go get a cooler".
yeehti No i did not overckock anything
Xpertgamingtech Look into under-volting using Throttlestop. Google for tutorials.
Been looking for a good gaming laptop at this price range. This is a consideration
3:00 Nice background you have :D
dat rwb 993 at 3:00 tho. sb got great taste in cars
That music at 3m is perfect.
When money permits, I'll build a nice desktop system, but I doubt I'll stop using my laptop for a lot of things at home.
better than my desktop it seems, if not on par. i will definitely be saving up for this laptop :D
