That also occurred to me. Why just a pain reliever when poor Sherpa obviously has an infection. That may be why he's listless....his body is fighting the infection.

I think as long as his bloodwork shows his liver enzymes aren't too high, it's best to bite the bullet and remove the tooth. The vet stuff bone powder up into the root canal, as it goes back quite far, so that it doesn't collapse and make his snout look crooked.
Anyhoo, the infection can affect heart health and even go to his brain. So honestly, you really don't have much choice, Jamie. We'll all be praying for both of you. 🙏💜

Dear Jamie, Our dear Trixie received her wings on Friday. She was a full 16 years old. She had her last dental and extraction two years ago and even with one elevated liver enzyme level, recovered very well. I highly recommend getting Sherpa's teeth cleaned, and all bad teeth pulled. He will only benefit from removing any bad teeth now for his comfort in the next years. Please if you can get it done soon. The poison of bad teeth affects his entire body including his heart. You do him no favours leaving it, and may only end up regretting the delay.

Right. The extraction will usually help. Had it done for my 14 yr old lab. 7 teeth, two months ago. Now fine. But the infection would have killed him. So the vet proceeded. His mouth looked like Sherpa's photo prior. My vet us his usual one. And us also dental certified. Not cheap, but worth for my loyal dog. Called Jack.

Sorry for your loss Carol 😢 my old greyhound girl has has 13 teeth removed and greyhounds are not good on anaesthesia but she was so much better without her teeth and she handled her operations well. Love and hugs to you ❤

Those of us who have followed Sherpa for years love him. The tooth looks rotten and I wonder if he needs a root canal. We all know this is very hard on you Jamie. Many hugs to both you and Sherpa.
Sometimes a bad tooth just has to go, if possible. An abscess or infection can cause a lot of pain, but can also spread that infection. Always sending love and prayers for Sherpa and Jamie. 😻😁😻
Maybe that tooth is why Sherpa hasn't been eating his meals fully?

Here we see again the absolutely great bond between the two, Jamie clearly senses that his buddy is missing something and that he isn't doing well.
I hope that the medicine will help him and that he will quickly become the bright fluffy boy we know.
The first step has been taken and with Dad's surprise kiss attack he's certainly feeling a little better.
The fact that he finished the bowl is also a good sign.

Please remove the tooth. My American Eskimo died suddenly from infected teeth when the infection got in his bloodstream. There is literally nothing you can do after that happens and they are gone within hours.
I think that tooth needs to cone out, as soon as possible. if it's getting infected again, the infection is causing havoc on his body. love you both.
We all forgot to keep checking on Sherpa's tooth during this time. It should have been a high alert when he started to eat less.

It’s so hard not to be able to hear him bark or howl. He looks so down in the dumps and his poor tiny tail, reminds me of Phil’s tiny tail in “life with Malamutes”. Fingers crossed that the pain killer helps and getting his tooth sorted out should hopefully brighten him up a bit.

Wet food rules
I think dry kibble by itself it damaging to the teeth and gums, no matter the age of the dog. I feel dumb that if took many years for me to figure this out. So today, my dogs always have their kibble soaked a bit in water, then I add about 1/4C of goat milk, as it's full of probiotics and very healthy for their gut flora. I also use a dental additive to their water called Advanced Plaque and Tartar Dental Fresh. I tried them all, and I find that this brand is the best for keeping their teeth the whitest, their gums healthiest, and keeps their breath with no smell. It tastes horrible but apparently dogs can't tell the difference.
Yep. Wet food is probably much easier for Sherpa. I think you got a big clue from how he cleaned his bowl!

Jamie, I have walked where you are with Australia border Collie mix. Ask the vet, some of the arthritis meds will cause depression, limit appetite, and some of what you are seeing. We changed his meds until we got the right mix. It made his last days much happier. I am sorry you are going through this. Hang in there, remember they are worth it.

Found out from my nephews that my brother just started chemotherapy (he has Stage 4 terminal prostate cancer as well as leukemia and bone cancer) and his voice ended up being just like Sherpa after the first round. He's a long road ahead of him, just like our Sherpa. My brother has been fighting cancer for a couple of years now, and the fact he's still kicking and raising a fit has me hoping for a great recovery, or at least a longer life than what many can hope for with such a diagnosis. I will keep Sherpa close to my heart in my prayers alongside my brother as I send you all of the healing energy I can. Have a relaxing and happy Father's Day Jamie!

Jamie, dental infection can and does kill. The tooth MUST COME OUT, I’ve bowed to this necessity with two OLD dogs, and they went on well for years afterward. Find a good canine dentist NOW! and get it done. All good hopes and wishes for you both.❤

@@ar50000yes. Some are dual or even multi certified. My dog's extraction surgery saved his life. He's 14. Had to soften food. But he's full force again.
@@ar50000 - he did. However, they decided to use antibiotics and pain relief for a period of time, due to the liver issue (as I understand it). But sometimes one must take a deep breath, say a prayer, and remove the root cause. I have developed septicemia twice myself due to what are called silent abscesses. Sherpa’s dental abscess is known, but as noted, sometimes you have to do the scariest thing for results. I’ve followed these lovely videos for years, and want the best for both of them.

Seeing Sherpa go crazy for the wet food warmed my heart. Our senior dogs adored wet food as well, and it also made it easier to give them their meds. He's still a puppy at heart, can barely make sound anymore but is still living his best life. What a good boy. Here's hoping he'll stick around for another long while.

Happy Father’s Day to the best doggo dad ever.
In my experience, dogs and cats prefer wet food, (but should always have access to dry and wet) especially as they get older as they need the water content. Please consider wet food from now on as his key meal, natures menu is meant to be excellent, and hopefully that will help his appetite too...if he will eat more, just give it to him! We can't have our sherps wasting away. Um seems like the tooth will need to come out, at least then you know it's not the problem. Please give Sherpa extra kisses from us all, he really is so precious.
We soak our greyhounds dry food and mix it with low protein wet food and our Rosie is missing 13 teeth but she has no problems eating it. Greyhounds also don't ever drink enough so at least through the soaked food they are getting extra water.
Get that tooth out! Its for his own good. Please, he will be so much better. You're in my prayers Sherpy. 😘

Never seen him refuse a treat - hard or soft. Part of your sausage rolls. He usually empties his bowl...or that one time you showed us that he didn't at first but he came back.
Someone posted about their aging cat on Threads that he's having to sit with the kitty during meals so that he'll eat. The Vet says the cat's okay as long as he keeps eating and keeps his strength up.
Compare that to Sherpa. ❤
Hope sherpa and Sarah spoiling you on fathers day ,I know having sherpa by your side and improving would mean more to you than a billion pounds

I miss our girl. It does my heart good to see Sherpa. He’s an old man but he’s not done! I think that tooth needs a yank. They can sedate him and pull it much faster than a root canal. They can even reverse the meds to wake him up quicker. Love and prayers to both of you! God Bless😇

I had to get a molar pulled last year, it was so bad they put me on antibiotics and pain killers. So I can’t even begin to imagine how Sherpa is feeling with that tooth.

Poor Sheeps, been so long since I’ve heard him talk. I too myself just spent 3K on my dog to get 8 teeth removed and she’s 12. Her back molars were cracked because of a bone she was given. She couldn’t eat hard kibble without shedding tears so I had to soften her food before I bit the bullet to take her to the vet to get her teeth removed.

As an old lady cancer survivor with teeth issues - lymphoma and chemo screws up one's bone and teeth building abilities - i can heartily agree that soft food is definitely the best. I have to cut everything up into oxo cube sizes and forget hard and crunchy grub. With such an ouchie tooth I bet Sherpa will really enjoy wet food for the time being. Good notion Jamie.👍😊💖 🐾

OK mate, you are caught between a rock and a hard place. i think you know the tooth has to come out, if it doesn't he is just gunna get worse, BUT, the surgery carries quite a risk, with his age, his i think it is liver(?), and this is bloody scary. These decisions are so damn hard to make, the what ifs really plague us. But here is the thing, you can only make it with the information available to you, the guidance of multiple vets, and most of all trust your gut. Whatever you decide, you only have Sherpa's best interest, his comfort and happiness at heart. It's agonising, but you have such great quality of Vets available to you, and quite obviously you leave NO stone unturned. You inspire so many to be better fur parents, you have set the bar Very high, thanks for the inspiration!
Jamie if it helps i had a tooth infection and they rushed me in to emergency room for an extraction as they said it could swell my airway. Worried for you and master Sherpa xx
