As a former Veterinary Technologist, you are doing the best for Sherpa. I am sure he will make it though because he is a strong dog and want to spend a lot more time in HIS garden.

Prayers for you and Sherpa. I had a Husky/Chow that lived to be almost fifteen, we adopted him at 2 1/2 years old. He developed a fatty tumor right next to his privates at 11 years old, looked like an utter, caused all kinds of problems, and I had to roll the dice on him getting surgery to remove it. He was fine after that, but at around 14 years old, he developed old-age diabetes. I had to give him insulin injections twice a day, tons of vet visits, had to put an antibacterial additive to his water, and eventually I had to build him ramps to get in the car and build an elevator for him to get down to the yard to do his business. It's a labor of love when they reach old age.

I raised Huskies for 25 years.
After listening to your description of Sherpa's condition, I would say, based on my experiences, that you have made the right decision in getting specialists to anesthetize and extract his tooth. Things can only improve once the tooth is removed.
Getting that tooth out is most important.
I have had a number of senior dogs, with medical conditions that required surgery.
I have heard the warnings of many good vets concerning a dog's ability to return to consciousness after the procedure.
In my experience, we often vastly underestimate a dog's ability to survive.
In Sherpa's case, his chances are enhanced by having an anesthesiologist, with their supplemental tools, attending to him.
I, like his many fans, am pulling for his speedy recovery.
Hang in there.
I, and thousands of people around the world, will be praying for Sherpa's successful operation and speedy recovery. This will hopefully give you comfort.
On the day of his operation, don’t think about us! You concentrate on Sherpa and take care of yourself too! We can wait a day or however long you need to take. We will all still be here praying for you both 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️

Years ago we inherited a very eldely dog when my Grandma died. The vet said 'I know she's old, she needs a big operation but I think she deserves a chance'. After it she came home bandaged from stem to stern, my mother went into the garden leaving her semi conscious on her rug, and turned round to see her standing behind her, bit wobbly, but tail wagging, and she lived for another 3 years ('til about 17),
Yeah, that's what my vet said... and I got the call no one wants to get. My boy had just turned 12.
I do hope that the outcome is different for Sherpa.

A bad tooth can make you feel awful. You have given Sherpa the best life he could ever have. I know by experience how much you can love a dog. He has loved you too. Dogs are family. Some people don't understand that. It is their loss.❤️🐾

That tooth was definitely the issue it needs to be extracted,sherpa will feel so much better and he'll be back to his normal loveable self,I'M GLAD that they will be scanning him to ❤❤❤😊😊😊

I've already been praying for Sherpa the moment I could see that Sherpa needed prayers, several months ago. But tonight I saw the post under my comment to pray for Sherpa by Saint Roch ( the Patron Saint of dogs). Roch is pronounced "Rock". However, I have always prayed to Saint Francis of Assisi who is also a Saint for animals. For now I will pray to both of them for a fast recovery for Sherpa.
Hopefully, I can make you less nervous? I adored a Pug I had for, get this 20yrs. Marvin had 5 teeth pulled at age 15yrs. Being so small, they had 5 Vets during the Surgery. He loved me so much? He made it & gave me 5 more amazing years to love him. Sherpa has the deepest connection with you I have ever seen. He will fight for you Jamie. I know we're all Praying for you both. We all want the best for you both, I believe they stay feeling your love. You'll be right there if he needs you. I pray for your peace that day. That's the gift you can give back to him. As the owner of an old dog with health problems I understand how worried you are. I will keep everything that is crossable crossed for you both for his operation. I know it is difficult because you obviously love him so much (what’s not to love) dogs are often more robust than we give them credit for. Just focus on how great it will be to know that his tooth will no longer give him pain and he will be more like his old self again. Hugs to both of you ❤️
We love our pets Jamie, and having any kind of surgery is scary. But this will be the best thing for Sherpa. I know when my cat Bob had all his teeth out he felt sooo much better afterwards.
