Hi there, I made the bakuteh and tastes so RICH! Thank you for the recipe and tips. One thing I noted though was it had quite bitter flavour to it, I'm guessing it's because of the herbs? Is there a way to reduce the bitterness or perhaps mask it? Thanks!
You are most welcome, Supitcha :D You know, we have so many more recipes that are exclusively on our platform. Why not come by to check us out? :D www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/
Long time (viewer) first time (commenting) Grace, I love you so so very much, seeing you taste the broth and then the meat convinced me I shall be preparing this dish. You are gorgeous, charming and such a pleasure to watch through your RUclips years. Stay awesome! ❤️
I always cook bak kut teh with my previous , previous emplyer but I was using the Prima Bak kut teh in a box, but this time I want to try from sctatch. :) Thanks!
Opps..sorry for not adding the information on the website. So, it's best to let it cool to room temperature and then refrigerate. Cooked food should not be left out for too long. :) Just updated the site with all the details on refrigerating. www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/bak-kut-teh~rkJWp0EUQ
Hi dear, love your channel💕 is there any difference cooking BKT in cast iron or pressure cooker? If pressure cooker it will be done in 20mins instead of 4 hours and also using gas the soup alwiz recede!
Thanks for the support :D Yes there is. Personally, I find stews work best in a cast iron dutch oven compared to pressure cooker. Pressure cooker is great if you don't have much time. However, the distribution of heat in a cast iron dutch oven is way better and that helps with the flavour immensely. Also the broth doesn't really reduce so much when cooked in a cast iron dutch oven especially if it is of good quality with a heavy lid. That locks and stores all the goodness within the pot. I've written about it in the tips to get tender meat. Maybe you can check it out ;) www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/bak-kut-teh
Nyonya Cooking Thanks so much for your tips! I have the same staub cast iron 24cm that you’re using in this video. Will try out soon and chicken rice too😉 Your cooking is so inspiring pls keep it up🙌🙌🙌💕👩🍳
Nyonya Cooking sure when I cook the dish😋 just noticed you were using de longines kettle the same color which I’m using too!🙌🙌 can you pls do a video on roast pork belly “siu yuk” ? 😍😍😍
Any chance I could get an explanation why the meat isn't seared in this process? Since searing would add deeper flavour to the soup through deglazing and better color on the pork
Bak kut teh is a broth based dish which focuses on the Chinese herbs. Also, when making Chinese soups, the meat isn't normally seared but simply simmered for many hours. That gives the deep flavours which are well known in Chinese soups. Hope that explains :)
I have a package of Chinese Herbal Soup Mix and most of the other spices! Looks like all I need to buy is the pork, enoki mushrooms and tofu skins and puffs.
Sure! Or the most popular version is Chik Kut Teh which is made out of chicken. I wrote about it on the website along with other tips which you might find useful :) www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/bak-kut-teh
You can check the list here. If you can find a Chinese grocer, you should be able to find all the herbs used in this video. www.nyonyacooking.com/recipes/bak-kut-teh Hope this helps!
Lol, as a non Chinese speaker (and reader), I am flattered :D It took a lotttt of work to research and recognize the characters printed on the packaging of these ingredients.
Nyonya Cooking thankyou so much for showing us how its made. it's midnight in China and I can't sleep after seeing this video, so delicious! must try it myself tomorrow.
While many claimed to have eaten bak kut teh without any issues, I would suggest to avoid it as the herbs are said to be "heaty" for the body. You can always check with the Chinese medicinal hall for more information.
