  • People love Flight Simulators and with the help of addons and hardware, it can become VERY realistic. However, are the costs of flight simulation getting too much? With so many products available, which ones are essential and which ones are just bonus candy if you can afford them? In this video we take a look at the real costs of flight simulation if you want to go down the route of purchasing a lot of the essential (& some non-essential) addons.

    I keep Navigraph as my only monthly cost. I could afford more but until the AI costs come down, I'm not interested. I never let the WOW factor control my wallet. I don't buy airport scenery if it's an airport I may fly into on very rare occasions. Cost versus use. I do have REX, GSX, PACX, a few airports, along with the A320 hardware. I come from a place of enjoying my experiences considering what MSFS was like in the early 80's. This edition, without a single addon, is shear heaven for anyone who started off with MSFS 1.0. To this day, I'm still amazed at the evolution every time I load the sim.

    • @TruBluLew23
      @TruBluLew23 День назад

      This is me. Navigraph is my only monthly cost. I use BeyondATC but only use the Premium Voices for ATC. And the only airports I buy, like you, are ones that I'll frequent a lot such as CYYZ, KJFK, and KLAS. It's easy to inflate your costs with MSFS but you just have to be reasonable about it.

    Another way to look at this hobby is how much valuable time it consumes (if your doing 'flight’s as closely as possible to real world procedures). Even a ‘short hop’ was pushing towards two hours out of my day, time that I could have spent being more productive, working out, getting things done around the house rather than sat at a computer.
    I’ve been into flight sim around 27 years, during which times have changed. A lot! We now live in a digital world where flight sim has become amazing, but at the same time there are just so many other aviation formats to indulge in.
    Amazing aviation RUclips channels, aviation podcasts, aviation e-magazines, simple flying app, the Aviation Herald website, the list goes on. Recently I’ve reminded myself that I am an aviation enthusiast, and NOT a flight sim enthusiast (which it was really starting to feel like).
    I’ve recently swapped my time at my SIM for time actually visiting LHR or Blackbush which I live near to, going to the gym, doing some housework or ‘to do list’ items with an aviation podcast on the headphones. And downtime for me now is catching up on the immersive variety of aviation on RUclips. Life now feels a bit more healthier and productive. I was starting to feel quiet guilty about the time I was spending on flight sim. I think the better it’s become, the more addictive it’s become. Just my thoughts.
    Right now I’m not regretting my time away from the sim. On reflection it’s actually made me question how I managed to write off so many hours of my life, essentially just sat at a computer (an no I wouldn’t be sitting there during the cruse phase of flight).
    That said flight sim has been a blast, it’s taught me plenty and enlightened my aviation knowledge along the way. But I’ll not be purchasing any more subscriptions, scenery or hardware, nor will I be upgrading my pc for any other gaming pc in the future.
    I don’t like to think what I’ve spent on flight sim over the years, but I can’t think of too many hobbies that come without any costs attached.
    Anyone want to purchase any hardware? 😂

  • @UKVSteve
    @UKVSteve 17 дней назад +8

    I have a fair chunk tied up in it, but nothing compared to how much I've spent on cars, drones, model aircraft and photography equipment over the years. On a £ per hour basis, flight simulation is very cheap and very satisfying whatever the weather. Well worth it.

    I think it’s worth mentioning Gavin that a lot of the hardware that you’ve purchased will hopefully last you several years, but I take your point in general. I guess I only fly 2 to 3 times a week on average, in the summer it can less as I’m mostly outside when the weather’s good. If you live in the UK right now I’m not sure if summer’s even started yet 😐. I personally will not go down the subscription route, my only must have subscription is Navigraph which is worth £9 per month.

  • @DanielDuhon
    @DanielDuhon 6 дней назад +1

    You can definitely get away with the free version of volanta to save some money. The joy of a hobby is it does not need to be purchased all at once. I’ve spent $1,000’s total on flight simulator, but over the course of 12 years, that puts into perspective that it builds over time. Especially with things like hardware that only have to be purchased once (not including upgrades).

    If I were to add up my simulator career of 20 years, I’ve probably spent at least $5k across sims, hardware, and add ons. Over half of that costs is just the computers.
    I will say though, when going through pilot training, it helped me get farther ahead and spent far less time in the aircraft, meaning not spending hundreds on the aircraft and instructor so I say the cost was valuable. I’ve got probably 5,000 hours or more of total sim time since FS2000.

    Very much a casual simmer here. I bought the base MSFS package, and for add-ons, off the top of my head, I've got the Just Flight Hawk T1 and the ATR72. I also bought FSRealistic and BeyondATC. I did buy the Thrustmaster T16000 + throttle + rudder pedals for about £200-250 (I can't remember). So, in all, I think I've spent about £350 to £400-ish. No monthly subscriptions - I have always been against getting them if not absolutely needed as it's easy to lose track of what you're paying for.
    I may look into replacing my HOTAS at some point. Particularly the throttle, as it isn't very good. And may look into getting a head-tracker too, although I currently fly GA and military jets in VR rather than flat screen, and I can get away without head tracking for airliners.

    It's getting crazy. And the addons makers relying on Simbrief are getting really bad. In FS2024 it should be mandatory that all FMCs of third party aircraft can trade info with the simulator.
    And the addon makers will tell you that you don't need a Navigraph sub but you do because third party addons won't talk to the AIRAC Cycle in the sim which does get updated.

  • @n35ql
    @n35ql 17 дней назад +1

    Simming always have been one of the expensive hobbies. One has to prioritise their needs.
    A mid range hotas is enogh and results in the same joy as quadrants, panels and yokes.
    Some 3rd party planes are must have, but the majority is not needed. If you are an airbus guy you don't need boeing or other boeing style aircrafts like maddog or crj and vica versa. If one likes more the small above small GAs they don't need expensive airliners.
    If you don't plan on a major upcoming expense you can buy a plane. I think 50 euros once every 2 or 3 months is not that big of a deal and after a while you will have one aircraft from each category. That should be enough, however i agree there are some must have's for their emotional or hisotrycal value.
    If you visit an airport only once or twice in your life you don't need payware scenery for that. If you don't really use atc you don't need atc softwares.
    About the hardwares (again) I think most of us started with mid range setups or low end ones, i mean both PCs and peripherals and upgraded over the course of time. I started msfs2020 with a t. flight hotas 4 and now I have honeycomb yoke and quadrant with pedals, 2 logitech panels and vkb hotas for dcs. I got one thing every year and so it was not that much of a financial stress.
    About navigraph. I have a subscription, but used to search for charts because they are free to get and legal to get for the safety of the aviation. Major airports have them on their website, those charts are easy to find, the smaller unpopular ones are a bit harder, although you can always send them an email to send you the charts. They will and have a great conversation about them. I had several random email exchanges with airport representative at the other side of the world, and were amazed that I wanted the docs only for simming.
    Weather apps, well I remember where I came from, in first half of 2020 I used to fly in fsx with the lowest settings, so I don't have the urge to upgrade to seasons or better weather, i read somewhere that rex has a very bad/ugly tranistion on the border of two diffetent weather states so I was never too keen to get it.
    About gsx and other softwares like that. It is nice to have walking passengers, but it only adds little to the immersion in my opinion. We spend the majority of time in the virtual cockpit so what does it matter if there ara passengers walking inside the jetway or not.
    So conclusion: You do not need everything just what you need, and if you know you won't need them in the upcoming months, you can cancel the subscription based addons.
    I can also understand we are not different and each to their own taste, so what I don't reqiure some other people might want in their sims, but remember, most of got where we are hardware and software wise one step at a time and purchased things over a period of years not at once.
    This was my two cents regarding the topic, thank you for reading it, have a great one.

    Currency conversion is the killer for Australia. One year subscription for Say Intentions $500. Not bloody liikely. X-54 throttle/joystick $300. Rudder pedals $120. A couple of scenery packs $30 each. Navigraph at $20 per month - nope. Three aircraft at $50 to $70 a piece. On the wish list is Bravo Throttle Quadrant - $450. Logitech autopilot cost $150 from memory. USB hub to connect the hardware $100. Beyond ATC is a temptation but it depends on how good MSFS 2024 is $60 for the default voices. Anything subscription is absolutely off the table. I no longer watch the RUclips presenters who give the weekly updates because it's mostly about payware scenery and aircraft which are pretty much off the table. How many aircraft can you fly at one time after all. I have the C-182 for VFR, the ATR 42/72 for regional turbo prob and the 737 for airline. Lots of freeware that is rarely used and i wouldn't miss if it disappeared. I also see zero purpose in airports where I can go inside the terminal building. I play to fly, not tour the airport. I have freeware such as We Love VFR and an astronomy dome collection. I have freeware airports that I never fly into and a bunch that I do use that are local.

    Yes, the hobby is expensive. I estimate I have $2,000 - $2,500 USD tied up in MSFS. Of course, this total does not take into account that same amount (perhaps even more) that I spent for FSX/P3D add-ons during the time I used those products. Keeping in mind that a lot of scenery purchased for FSX (eg FSDreamTeam stuff) was available for P3D at no extra cost. But that old stuff is just collecting virtual dust as I no longer use P3D and never will go backwards.
    In some respects, MSFS has caused some developers to release products much cheaper than what we paid for them in P3D. For example, the Fenix A320 in my opinion is just as good as it stands today than what we had from FlightSimLabs in P3D. The FSL A320 was $149.95 compared to the Fenix.
    But for all the adults in the room, the price of everything is going up and up and up. There seems to be no limit.

    I think it’s getting out of hand but some of these addons could be fix with game devs building sims with must have features such as GSX and more accurate airport scenery.

    My hardware (besides computer): Airbus Captains Pack, Winwing FCU1, Tobii Eye Tracker - 559€. Software: Fenix A320: 59€, BeyondATC: 36€. Subscriptions: Navigraph: 100€. Total: 654€ + 8.30€/month. So I guess... Thanks for also making me feel bad 😂 I think the only thing I regret is the Tobii, for some reason I can't adaot to it. @Easyjetsimpilot how about a video with your Tobii settings?

    I keep costs to a minimum. i only have 5 payware airports an the FENIX along with GSX. But i am going to purchase a year of Navigraph I think total cost £155. I have a £30 logitek pro 3D joystick, saitek throttle quadrant and thrustmaster cheap rudder pedals (not the pendulum ones). thats all you need to enjoy the Airbus in MSFS

    I don't like to think how much I have spent on flights sim over the years what with FSX, several P3D versions, xplane and MSFS. I have two joysticks, two yokes, three throttle quadrants and a pair of rudder pedals. Oh don't forget the autopilot and a frightening amount of scenery, tools and aircraft. I could have saved money by getting a real world PPL. Is there a flight simmers anonymous group out there?

    Depending on your "needs" the computer itself should be added to the cost. While my mid spec PC is good enough to fly MSFS, it'd be awfully nice to have a 4090 and the latest CPU and all the RAM and SSDs so I can see all my expensive add-on scenery at a high framerate.

    Oh, and quite frankly just so everybody knows in the marketplace where most people buy their aircraft. They are substantially cheaper than what they used to be. So I would say that 2020 has been actually cheaper to run then FSX or FS9. That’s why I’m saying I don’t know how long you’ve been slimming, but it doesn’t sound like you’ve been slimming too long to understand that or to understand how all that has actually gotten cheaper still expensive but it’s gotten cheaper.

    While one could certainly spend a small fortune on addons, it is completely unnecessary. I have not spent a dime on addons for the simulator, but my money has gone for hardware. I have built 2 gaming computers exclusively for flight sim. I fly in VR and have upgraded my headset several times so I now own 3. I bought a YAW VR Motion simulator chair and a Velocity One Flight Yoke. In total I have invested more than $15,000 CAD on the hobby. I couldn't afford it, but I'm glad I have it! I can't wait for MSFS 2024 in November - I'll dedicate one of my setups to each sim.

    Pop out panel manager
    Tobii eye tracker
    Rudder pedals
    12 total stream decks
    Custom flight panel profiles for stream decks
    All in all, for just software Im in about $4000. Custom aircraft is $1400. My custom built sim in total is around $10k.
    In all fairness, I am 51, own a couple businesses, and have no other significant hobbies. I fly 5-7 flights per week. So for me it is worth it and I would do it again. Yes, its a lot of money, but acceptable to me under my circumstances

    It's the AI stuff that brought this question up. Whilst the other stuff is obviously an expense, most of it is buy/subscribe - then use. The AI stuff is expensive as it's new, and there's new stuff coming every 5 minutes.
    Really, it's no different from any other hobby. You have to do it within your means, and marry it up against how important it is to you. For me, it's my main leisure so I havea lot of stuff, but get loads of enjoyment out of it. I go out with the Mrs about 4 times a year due to work and family constraints.

    I don’t know how long you’ve been flight semi but it’s been expensive for a very long time. I have thousands of dollars wrapped up in my flight Sim. I was going through a divorce at one time and I had to keep my computer off-line and put away during the process of the divorce because I always jokingly stated that if my ex-wife knew how much money I had in the flight Sam she would want my computer and she would fight for that in the divorce. So I don’t know why you say, is it getting too expensive? It has been too expensive and it’s only gonna get worse.
