Day in the life as a PT tech/aide

  • What a slow day in my life as a Physical therapist tech/aide (PT tech/aide). I have been working as one since March as I am going to go to school for occupational therapy. I thought this job would be an excellent way to get experience in the medical field. It was very informative working with patients and actually getting paid. I recommend anyone trying to get into the therapy world get a paid job. I had done a lot of volunteer work but that is mostly just learning. I worked with a private office that has around five locations where I could work in.
    Please comment with any questions you have about my future career and what I have done to add to my resume of going into grad school.

      That is very sweet! Good luck! You got this!! Don’t be afraid to talk to the clients. They love to talk to someone. Be confident but also don’t be afraid to ask your PT questions if you don’t know something

    Hello. I just wanted to ask: Do you need a PT aide license to be accepted for the job? I’m currently majoring in Kinesiology, chasing my bachelors, and I was thinking if I should enroll in such certification courses to get this kind of job before graduating uni.

    • @alyssamarie3874
      @alyssamarie3874  2 года назад +3

      No I didn’t need any certifications. Being just a tech/aide for this private company but at hospitals it might be different

      I just started working as a tech at 18. My favorite part is applying the e-stims! It’s so much fun and rewarding. The most tedious part would have to be clean up and spraying down everything cuz of Covid.

      @@lexismith8206 That is so wrong. Techs should be not using US or estim since they are not trained properly. only PTAs and PTs who actually go through a rigorous program and have to pass licensure exams should be doing those modalities.

    Hi Alyssa ! I too am pursuing becoming a PT Aide. I am in training as we speak. However, the large exercise data base to learn for the clinic is quite daunting. About a few hundred exercises to learn in a few weeks. How on earth did you go about learning the all the exercises efficiently/fast? Thanks !

    • @alyssamarie3874
      @alyssamarie3874  2 года назад +3

      Great question and yes there are a lot. Usually it’s the same exercises on multiple ppl if the injury was the same. Where I worked we used the same ones over and over on different patients and the same ones when they came back. Depending if it’s shoulder or hip there were specific exercises maybe like 6ish different ones they would do then the therapist would work on them. My therapists were really nice about if I didn’t know something they would explain it to me. Also each therapist has different ways of wording things too so just ask if you don’t know and hopefully they will be happy to help. Trust the more you do it; it will become muscle memory. Good luck!

    Is this pretty much all you do ? I just applied for the pt tech, i tried to do the pta but it was very difficult in school which i have my associates in psychology and working onn my bachelors. I heard they make you do more responsibilities then what the requirements by law tell you. Im in texas so it might be different where you are , but is there anything else you do that you didnt mention in the video ? Im super nervous i have customer service skills from retail of 2 years but i have no experience with pt at all but tell me

      Hey! That’s all I did at my place. I feel like every place is different. Most of the PT tech’s were students and we didn’t need any certifications. I worked at a privately owned company. They were pretty flexible and some PT’s made me do all the exercises with the patients that they provided but other PT’s wanted me to just help them with the exercises and they did most of it. But yeah cleaning the beds and equipment is a big part of it and laundry with LOTS of towels. Also, I did provide e-stem and the hot/cool packs. I think I was not allowed to provide the e-stems but as long as your careful and do it under supervision the first turns you do it then it should be ok. Want to be very careful to not electrocute someone. I don’t think there was much else I do besides if I closed I would clean bathrooms and vacuum. It definitely can be nerve racking but you got this!! It’s great experience though if you want to eventually go back to PTA school.

      That’s awesome!! Wish you the best of luck. I bet your going to do amazing. Just listen to your PT and you will learn a lot. I didn’t so much at my job but it depends on on your facility. I also think the longer you work the more they trust you to do different responsibilities.

    Hello, I just recently graduated as a PTA but the job market where I live is a little saturated. I am applying for PT tech jobs right now, can you give any tips about the interview process? What type of questions they might ask? I don't have any prior experience in this field only the experience I gain through PTA school.

    • @alyssamarie3874
      @alyssamarie3874  2 года назад +3

      Hey! So sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I thought I did respond and when I went to check it out it must have not sent. I am very sorry but I can’t help you much with this question because my interview was very relaxed and they just automatically hired me and want to know when I could work. That’s awesome and congratulations. Also I was just a tech so you would be doing way more than me. I would look up questions on the Internet but also be prepared to talk about your experiences working with patients or how did you deal with a difficult patient. You got this!! And even though you don’t have much experience in the field you can talk about another job you had if it dealt with communication and has that is relevant to being a pta and having good conversations with ppl.

    Do you need schooling to be a PT tech or is that just for PT assistant?

    • @alyssamarie3874
      @alyssamarie3874  2 года назад +1

      I was earning my bachelor's degree but no you do not need a physical therapy degree to be a tech. A tech and assistant or two different things as well. A PT assistant does need schooling to become one. Hope that helps
