      I first boarded her in 1964, there was no place on the ship that you couldn't go at that time, except all the way to the top, I've never been there......but I'd climb that ladder to get there,...if they would let me.

    I was raised in Houston but moved to work in the offshore oilfields. I drove from Louisiana many weekends working on the Texas as a volunteer some years ago. At the time there were about 35 volunteers and 11 state employees working on her. The work never ends because 46 people, not all at once working making repairs is like 46 ants eating an elephant. The first time I replaced the wood deck, I was shocked that it was 4x4s attached by welded studs and nuts. I worked on the 40mm guns to get them to turn freely for the kids to play gunner. I brought my kids and their kids to the Texas for day trips and soon will bring my great grandkids. I have pictures of the decks when they were concrete, but that was taken out and wood put back down years ago. When the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor was filmed on the Texas, they made shell molds for the 5" guns and placed the new shells next to the guns. I took the molds and made about 40 more shells for the Magazine room below deck. In my 70s now I can't work like I used too, but sure miss the Texas.

It is awesome to see her finally getting the attention she has needed for so long and I sincerely hope that her future maintenance is not so long delayed. @@AJeepADroneAndAnOldMan Wow! A much larger work package than I thought. If Gulf Copper takes as much care with her interior as they have the exterior hull she is going to be good for at least another 30 years, though I hope it won't take that long before she sees another refit. Time and salt water are a deadly combination for steel ships.
      I knew she was due to be placed back in the water shortly and there would be additional work at the yard, but I thought she'd be plugged into her new home before the end of summer 2024.

I have been doing this on the battleship Texas for about five years now, the battleship Texas means a lot to me and my family. Even though I have issues with the battleship Texas foundation from time to time those are issues with the foundation itself. Certainly not the battleship or the volunteers. The foundation seems to be a gathering of politically motivated individuals who make decisions with no concern for the general public, i.e. those who pay for everything they’re doing with their tax dollars. If you have time join us on one of my live streams every Monday night 6:30 PM central standard time, we talk about the battleship, Texas, World War II, and just general conversation. BB35 The USS Texas, being the oldest US and only early dreadnought (pre WW1) battleship to survive has always made her my top choice of museum ships. The Texas was on the cutting edge during her early years with being the first battleship ever to have 14" main guns, the first U.S. warship with fire control guns, the first U.S. battleship to launch an aircraft, have anti-aircraft guns and radar. Then you add in her serving from 1914 to 1948, thus being the only surviving ship to serve in both WW1 & WW2. Plus, her WW2 battle record has her providing her 10 x 14" fire support in both theaters of operations while being in many of the most famous battles. When I think of her long colorful history, that no other battleship (or any warship) can match, I just get full of pride.

      The deck, and the inside are actually the next steps. Within just a few weeks, she’ll be coming out of dry dock, but staying at the shipyard for a minimum of one year while the wooden deck is removed, and the steel deck underneath is repaired and then a new wooden deck put on, once that is done the deck guns will be put back in place. During this time work on the inside will also be getting done.

    Two things I'd like to see...first, a live 360 camera from either in and or on top of the crow's nest so folks would have an idea of how far you can actually see from the lookout point. Second, since access would be impossible for visitors without massive liability.... a video of the crow's nest (to include the climb up) showing how it functioned and hopefully some original pics of her being manned. Perhaps this could be around a 15-30 minute video with drone shots from the outside as well.

Unlike modern ships that have defensive weapons in World War II those did not exist. Ships had to be ready to take a hit, the thick armor, modern ships rely on defensive weapons like the CIWS system to defend themselves. Modern ships cannot take a hit like the old ones. Their armor is simply too thin if not, totally nonexistent.

    • @AJeepADroneAndAnOldMan
      @AJeepADroneAndAnOldMan  10 месяцев назад +1

      No, the engines will never run again, it’s in agreement with the US Navy. The agreement says the engines can never be started and steam and or compressed air cannot be entered into the system. The engines without the ship are registered with the national historical archives as an historical item their selves. As far as I know, it’s the only set of engines above water of that kind. They are maintained to keep them from rusting, but at the present they are unable to run, and it would cost millions upon millions of dollars to make them run. Since she is going nowhere under her own power, it would be a waste of money. Even if the Navy would allow it.

Unfortunately, we live in a very hostile world with very hostile people and to our misfortune they sometimes gain power. It's at times like those that make machines like this necessary. That’s a very odd conversation. They were both removed and put on display in 1948 when the ship arrived at San Jacinto. One went missing about 20 or 30 years ago. You might ask, how a screw that goes missing, that’s what everybody was asking and nobody knows you’re certainly not going to back up with a pick up truck and take that thing unless you want to smash your pick up truck. So one is simply missing. The other was put on the deck for display for about 20 years and then removed and put in storage. That one has been refurbished and is offsite now where they have the deck guns being refurbished. I assume their intention is to put it on display once is moved to Pier 21. Their current estimate on that happening is late 2025 or early 2026.

  • @fw1421

    Why didn’t they straighten out the rudder? It would make towing her to her new berth a lot easier!

    • @AJeepADroneAndAnOldMan
      @AJeepADroneAndAnOldMan  10 месяцев назад +2

      Her new birth is about a quarter mile away straight across the ship channel so the Rutter will not be an issue. But the reason they did not fix it is because it would’ve cost about $4 million and since she cannot propel herself, she really has no use for a rudder. Right now the Rutter is seized at a 14° starboard return which is the last turn she made going into San Jacinto. The wheel was not straightened to straighten the rudder so it’s kind of cool that the Rutter represents the last turn she ever made on her own.
