Hi, can you possibly show an image example of a V5 document where the catergory such as N is shown. I recently viewed a Merc Convertible for sale which I had a prior paid for report showing the vehicle as Cat N, It also showed on Autotrader as Cat N. The vehicle has had 2 private plate changes over the previous 2 years and I was wondering if this could be used to hide the info on the V5. There is nothing on the v5, it is on the insurance data base, that is why you should do a car Data check before buying. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks so much for this video - now feeling a lot more happier about the situation and what could come to pass. I've just told my insurance about my car which has been involved in an incident and had minor damage. Felt like I was going to be sick when the insurers said it's a write off... It's the very start of the claim, but I suspect she'll be given a Cat D status, which would be the best out of a yuck situation. Good to know about the 3rd party and how it all works through their insurance. Many thanks!!
@@aaanton11 no, thank you for your video. Turns out, shes a class N (there's been a weird amalgamation of the classes and what insurers are allowed to class these as-wonder if this is to do with the repair laws?) so I got her back for £100 and don't need to notify DVLA. Excess will be recouped once insurers have played their blame game and I'll be up a bit of money for minimal repairs needed. Most importantly I'm keeping my car on the road for our 14th year together :)
@@JillyMacKenzie I badgered them, as it's my first motor since L plates/ my daily and I'm too emotionally attached to it. It's a Nissan Juke. 👍 Luckily for you the car that hit you had insurance. The guy who hit the wing on my C1 gave false details and left the country (never found out if he had a license or not). Didn't claim off my insurance and just had to pay myself. It was super cheap to repair.

Hi Anton, just came across your video, just wanted to ask, who decides what category your car falls into? I’m only asking as I have had a bump recently and insurer has wrote it off, but i have chosen to keep the car as only the headlamp needs replacing and the bumper needs some TLC, would this automatically fall under Cat N or D? Who decides this? Thanks
thanks for the vid, I'm looking at a Cat S, guy is selling privately on autotrader, conveniently left out all the info about Cat S, I'm going to have to ask him for the docs, and wonder if he will provide them, car has also not been taxed since April, so not sure how he's still driving it.
Hi Anton.. Thanks for your information and your video is very helpful. I have exactly same situation like you had. I’m on Cat D. . I like to keep my vehicle. As you said I don’t have to notify DVLA but once I written off what will happen to my insurance? Can I carry on having policy with same insurance company till whole year end or find a different insurance company? Please explain. I’m bit confused

They said we are coming tomorrow to pick it up. I said, you under valued my car and I’m not gonna hand over to you. Please advise. Thanks And another thing, should I inform DVLA immediately?
If you’re buying a Cat N or Cat D vehicle, do you have to notify the insurance provider when you come to insure it? Is that not needed in the same way you don’t need to send the V5 off
@@aaanton11 Cheers Anton, so just to double check, when I apply for insurance they should already have that information and so the initial quote will reflect that?
My car is a 2011 Hyundai i10. Another vehicle hit my front right wheel, bending it in slightly, and also damage to the wheel hood. The third party insurance has offered to take it in for evaluation of either repair or write off. If it’s a write off, can I still keep my car and get them to pay for my repairs or part of my repairs?
If they write off the car they pay you out the market value, you will then have the chance of offering them a lower amount to buy the car back but you will have to pay out to repair the damage, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Good afternoon, I want to buy a car at a copart auction, as I understand it, it is better to take a car with category N in order to successfully pass the MOT after repair. I saw that insurance companies increase the amount of insurance due to category N, is it really much more expensive? Maybe some stupid questions, I'm from Ukraine and don't know the local rules. And I also heard that insurance will also be more expensive for Ukrainian rights
Some of the cars that come through Co parts auctions have been written off by insurance companies but it is not registered on the database if you run a check on the numberplate it will give you more of an idea as to the history of the car and if it’s been registered written off Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I had a question in relation to this regarding insurance, as I think my parents got ripped off last year with what they got paid from the insurance after a rear end collision into their car, they told me they only got offered the value they had put on the insurance minus the excess...this did not sound right to me at the time. Surely they shouldn't be taking off 'your' excess when it is being paid out from the offenders insurance? I thought they had to offer enough to get a similar car of age/mileage or repair whichever was cheaper? Can you even insist you want the repair instead, seems very vague to me when looking into it.
Surprised if the crash bar hasn't been damaged as well as the rear panel you showed. Crash bars are readily available for these cars, cheaply so not the end of the world if it does need changing out. I'd whip the rear bumper cover off and take a look see.
Do you know that cat s car needs new Mot or not? I have situation similar as yours damage from roof. And it says need repair to roadworthy condition. Do you need process it or just leave it?
If it has a current mot don't worry, worth checking mot history for current status, as in this video ruclips.net/video/9acTyehwtsM/видео.html Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Would you buy the said car if you really liked it but it had obviously had some work done but the hpi is all good. Thx
Hi mate a woman crashed into the back of my car while I was in Asda. She gave details and I'm claiming through my insurance who'll then chase hers. If it's only superficial damage and a rear bumper replacement will this be recorded as anything like cat c/d/n/s or whatever as I don't want the car to be worth less when selling in the future or are little bumps like that not recorded on log book

@@aaanton11 Basically I found a car I've been looking for and it is very cheap, but cat S. Owner sent me pics of what it looked like after the accident - rear bumper missing, that's it. The exhaust pipe etc metal parts were all exposed. I'm considering to buy it but very anxious that there is something wrong with the car. Especially that current owner who bought it after the accident in December 2019 has only driven it for 800 miles since. The lady claims that she wants to switch to automatic as she is not getting on with the manual very well. She never mentioned the cat S etc thing until I've noticed it on the advert (was hard to see) and I did a full gold check online. I could send you the pics if you care enough to help?
@@aaanton11 Long story short I was hoping to find out from the video whether you would buy such cars yourself etc and what sort of risks or downsides are there e.g. what happens when you try to insure a cat S car? I am planning to ring my insurer on Monday to see what deal they can give me.
No the insurance is none the wiser, unless you write the car off then they will offer you less as the value is less, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
The premium might go up, but the insurance company had to be notified about the accident because of the other cars involved, so a claim is no different to a accident, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
The boot vents are really important they control the cabin pressure when you are driving, for instance if you block them up you would get a horrendous buffeting noise if you open the window slightly the pressure in the car would increase and have nowhere to go, giving you increased pressure in your ears you also need a flow of air through the car when you have your blowers on or the heater. and that is what the vents are there for, they have the flap to act as a one-way flow, so air can only escape the car and not enter through the rear vents making the flow directional from front to rear. I hope this helps Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
HELLLO @aaanton11, I have a question regarding car written off! A month ago a bought a car from private seller and v5 log book is clear nothing written off but when I check it online, it says CAT D, what is it . I am really confused and depressed .
it is law that if a car is sold, if it has been cat registered it must say so on the advert, there is nothing on the log book to see, you can only find out by doing a hpi check before you buy. but if you were not aware and still have a copy of the original listing you could ask for your money back, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
No. He told me it is HPI clear and shown V5 log book as well but when i checked online it says Cat D. If car is cat D , it should have written on log book isn’t it? How there is nothing written on log book? I am so confused. Thanks for your reply mate👍
It won’t make any difference to your insurance buying a cat. You don’t have to declare it. It should already be on their records. It won’t make a difference to your price. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
My Vectra was category n written off by my insurers , it was stationary and an idiot , drove into the back of me . I got a very good payout from the cars insurers ( axa) and I have continued to drive the car. I now want to sell the car . I would tell any buyer that it was a category n car. But to aid a sale thought I’d buy a vehicle check to show any buyer. I was astonished to find no mention it’s a cat n car. I had assumed that Axa , who apparently do notify the insurers anti fraud association of such events ) would notify the Dvla ( I’m going to check later today ) but if they don’t have to and I don’t have to then how on earth when buying a car do you know it’s a cat n write off unless the seller tells you ?
You are duty bound to notify the dvla, but there seems to be not much chasing up if this is not done. so there will be many written off cars out there with no record, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
It gets worse. Rang AXA this morning and due to “ a technical hitch “ they didnt tell MIAFTR and MIAFTR hence didn’t tell the DVLA. Should all be corrected by tomorrow. I have steam coming out of my head re this . My question to AXA what if I hadn’t disclosed something , when taking out any insurance with them , due to a technical hitch, remains unanswered .
@@aaanton11 what if I already taxed and insured the car and used it a bit can i still get my money back? What if he refused? Sorry for asking too many questions as this is our first time to buy a car. According to the seller he will fly out of the country for a couple of weeks. 😞
Just be careful though, don't become a victim like me, I purchased a category N Astra SRI 1.4Turbo Nav, a brilliant car thatw as involved in a similar back end impact, damaging the rear bumper, the car was repaired by the owner or whoever he sold it to, who then advertised it on Ebay clearly saying it was cat N car, I took a gamble as the price I paid for it just under £6grand, with 48K miles, drives like new, a week into purchase the clutch pedal went to floor, so rang Vauxhalls as they did have a dodgy clutch on many of them and had a recall on most diesel engine cars, mine was a petrol so they said mine was not under any recall, so this intermittent fault develops only in heavy slow moving traffic, then another week later the Electric power steering went,,took the car to Vauxhall Dealers, when they realised it was a cat N car, they simply did not want to know, not only that they would not want to trade it in either with a brand new car! So thanks Vauxhalls, and your franchise dealers, good bye I will think again before buying a Vauxhall brand. My insurance company were happy to insure it with no problems, and like I said these problems had nothing to do with the rear impact, there is no superficial damage to chassis as I have had independent garage check it out

So many young drivers tapped into me I let them off it's not a big deal. Also ext year your insurance will go up as you made a claim and you need to declare it. Best for renewal no claims no accidents no convictions = cheaper quote.
It was not a option, as the lady hit the fiesta that hit the 107, the fiesta was badly damaged, so the insurance had to be notified anyway, so claim or not the premium will go up, so should we be out of pocket for a non fault accident? I see where you are coming from but circumstances dictate the outcome. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 no, thank you for your video. Turns out, shes a class N (there's been a weird amalgamation of the classes and what insurers are allowed to class these as-wonder if this is to do with the repair laws?) so I got her back for £100 and don't need to notify DVLA. Excess will be recouped once insurers have played their blame game and I'll be up a bit of money for minimal repairs needed. Most importantly I'm keeping my car on the road for our 14th year together :)

Car now retailing for circa 1.2K even though she's 19 so I'm still quids in.
It's a Nissan Juke. 👍
Luckily for you the car that hit you had insurance. The guy who hit the wing on my C1 gave false details and left the country (never found out if he had a license or not). Didn't claim off my insurance and just had to pay myself. It was super cheap to repair.

Hi this vid was a big help :) my car got written off and its a cat N. I paid for the car back and my solictors have got me a hire car and said i would get money from the third party insurance who was at fault and that i could buy the car back and have some money to repair the car however i still have the hire car and have my car back from the garage but no money how long does it take the third party insurance to pay?

Hi Anton, just came across your video, just wanted to ask, who decides what category your car falls into? I’m only asking as I have had a bump recently and insurer has wrote it off, but i have chosen to keep the car as only the headlamp needs replacing and the bumper needs some TLC, would this automatically fall under Cat N or D? Who decides this? Thanks
Insurance decides, but most of the time if you buy back they dont cat the car at all only if they take it away,Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

As you said I don’t have to notify DVLA but once I written off what will happen to my insurance? Can I carry on having policy with same insurance company till whole year end or find a different insurance company? Please explain. I’m bit confused
If your insurance company pay you out on a right off you will need to take out another insurance policy to continue using the vehicle, if a third-party is insurance is paying out and your insurance is not affected your policy will still continue to run, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

If you’re buying a Cat N or Cat D vehicle, do you have to notify the insurance provider when you come to insure it?

It is vague, and the more you argue the point the more you will get, they always try and pay out the least amount Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
How much more would your insurance be if you tried to insurance a Cat N....??
No different, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Surprised if the crash bar hasn't been damaged as well as the rear panel you showed. Crash bars are readily available for these cars, cheaply so not the end of the world if it does need changing out. I'd whip the rear bumper cover off and take a look see.

Do you know that cat s car needs new Mot or not? I have situation similar as yours damage from roof. And it says need repair to roadworthy condition. Do you need process it or just leave it?

Hi mate a woman crashed into the back of my car while I was in Asda. She gave details and I'm claiming through my insurance who'll then chase hers. If it's only superficial damage and a rear bumper replacement will this be recorded as anything like cat c/d/n/s or whatever as I don't want the car to be worth less when selling in the future or are little bumps like that not recorded on log book
If the insurance rights it off it might be recorded,Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Hi. Just wanted to know your thoughts on this scheme ending and possible reasons as to why?
Also, if the whole point of the scheme was to prevent fraud etc (mismatching chassis & engine), then ending the scheme would be a green light for opportunists no?

Maybe from stolen parts?

Why in uk, we can't find proper car body fix like that in usa.
Not sure, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
So if I buy a Cat S car would my insurance be high?
no difference in price, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
What about the effect of a claim on your insurance premium?
The premium might go up, but the insurance company had to be notified about the accident because of the other cars involved, so a claim is no different to a accident, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
what is the point of the back boot vents?
The boot vents are really important they control the cabin pressure when you are driving, for instance if you block them up you would get a horrendous buffeting noise if you open the window slightly the pressure in the car would increase and have nowhere to go, giving you increased pressure in your ears
you also need a flow of air through the car when you have your blowers on or the heater.
and that is what the vents are there for, they have the flap to act as a one-way flow, so air can only escape the car and not enter through the rear vents making the flow directional from front to rear. I hope this helps Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

HELLLO @aaanton11,
I have a question regarding car written off!

Sorry guy I don’t understand probably??? If I buy cars have cat n or s ! As new drivers my insurance go expensive???
Bought a car the other day didn’t do a gold check which is my fault. Then i found out that it had a cat s write off. I don’t know what to do now
if it was not in the advert you can ask for your money back, is it is law to make the buyer aware. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Just be careful though, don't become a victim like me, I purchased a category N Astra SRI 1.4Turbo Nav, a brilliant car thatw as involved in a similar back end impact, damaging the rear bumper, the car was repaired by the owner or whoever he sold it to, who then advertised it on Ebay clearly saying it was cat N car, I took a gamble as the price I paid for it just under £6grand, with 48K miles, drives like new, a week into purchase the clutch pedal went to floor, so rang Vauxhalls as they did have a dodgy clutch on many of them and had a recall on most diesel engine cars, mine was a petrol so they said mine was not under any recall, so this intermittent fault develops only in heavy slow moving traffic,
then another week later the Electric power steering went,,took the car to Vauxhall Dealers, when they realised it was a cat N car, they simply did not want to know, not only that they would not want to trade it in either with a brand new car!

Honestly your car is an old car. You could have let the lady off she has lost a lot of money. You made money on someone's mistake.
