perhaps I am mistaken, but when you tightened the rear , I would have gone a bit tighter and removed the slack that you left again, you are the person with knowledge and experience and I have almost neither I hope someday you'll find the time to respond ty Jeff

Once you tighten the tie downs, you will need to fasten down the excess slack or it will slap against your car in the wind all the way to your kayak destination which is super annoying.

Are the rear, felt lined brackets also T-slot like the fronts?
