I'm 76, getting our Eddyline kayaks off the big van we tow our travel trailer with has been getting a bit dicey....just got a set of these from Rack Attack and it sure looks like my wife and I will be getting on the water more frequently this year. I'd sure hate to sell our boats just because it is getting too difficult to load them.
Recently bought two pair for our 2013 Chevy Tahoe. At 0:40, you show the upper cradle can be adjusted with the thumb screw. Apparently Thule has since added two bolts, same as the lower cradle. The installation instructions say to torque them down (before fitting to your kayak later!) but the later instructions weren't updated and say nothing about loosening the bolts. Next, I notice with a normal height vehicle (in this video) you are doing a rather deep squat to start the lift. I've found you can stand more upright and release one at a time if you lift each one slightly to keep from re-latching. Finally, on our Tahoe, our kayaks seemed to needlessly be centered over the edge of the roof. I've moved the upper cradle all the way up, and moved the lower cradle up to fit (takes some trial and error and measuring) so our kayaks now ride on the roof. It makes starting to lower a little more difficult, but seems much more stable on the roof rack. Great tip about tucking the strap tails into the cradle pockets. Thanks!
Wish the price was down a bit. If it came with the crossbars you needed i could see it and the key lock included. I mean really for that price you cant throw in a key lock system. Thule presi must be wanting another jet!
When I got my first fishing kayak, I didn't have a trailer and it was a 12ft kayak and I had a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, so I put the bike rack on the back of my car and readjusted the bike holding arms to slant downwards and threw a pad/blanket over the slanted arms. I also made a rectangle/square with PVC piping and added some Noodle type foam around one side of the PVC piping. I would slide one end of that pvc rectangle under the roof rack and let the end of the rectangle with the foam extend just past the end of my back hatch. I used this so when I slide my kayak up the "ramp" I made with the bike rack, the hull would slide on top of that foam so it wouldn't scratch my car. I worked really good. I think my yak was about 70lbs, now I have a Hobie PA 14 which is about 150lbs, so I got a small trailer but I am looking to buy an RV trailer, so I am thinking I may have to break out the bike rack again and load my yak on top of my 2022 Kia Sorento, which has a longer body style. Also, I use some lightweight straps that have a easy release using your thumb, they say don't use the rachet style straps, they can crack the hull. I run these straps through the car, I open the doors and around the kayak, that way I don't 100% rely on the roof racks. My Hobie cost too much to trust a $300 roof rack on a 5 hour trip. I hope this helps those looking for ideas. The bike rack version worked good, if you need a picture I could send you one, just hit me up.
Works really well! Nice thing about a boat that size, is the Hullavator will do all the heavy lifting. Most mirrors should tuck in so there shouldn't be any interference.
Thule recommend a minimum of 4" extension on the racks to avoid damaging the vehicle whilst loading/unloading. The racks on your video don't appear to extend out this recommended distance. Can you comment on this please. I'm looking to fit the Thule Aeroblade to accommodate the Hullavator to my vehicle. Is the 4" extension necessary?
You have to consider that in addition to the $630 of this equipment, you have to spend $300-$400 in of the the roof rack bars. You are actually talking of a $1,000 plus taxes, S&H and other fees. My SUV is too tall (78in) and my Kayak too heavy (85 lbs empty, probably 115 with the stuff I leave inside so I don't forget) to consider this. I opted for a $300 trailer from Cragslist.
I agree, excellent demo, thanks, Paul! FYI - here you say "898" but the video title is "989." In your other video demoing two racks on a Lexus, you say "989" but that video title says "898." Currently, I'm not seeing either number in the Hullavator Pro name on Thule's site. No biggie, thanks again!
In the 5+ years since Paul made this video the Hullavator much like Lebron James has changed numbers a few times but is still the same dominant player. Thule made a couple modifications to the Hullavator over the years as cars and bars got more complex. The functions are essentially the same for video purposes. Great ears and eyes though!
I am interested in purchasing the Hullavator. Can it be used to transport a Hobie Mirage Elcipse Peddlebaord. The peddleboard is kept in the bag while transporting for protection. Can it also be used to transport 1 or 2 paddleboards. I see the Yakima Showdown can transport both a Kayak or paddleboard, the only difference being the kayak saddles and the SUP saddles. I would prefer the Hullavator with the hydraulic lifts rather than the Showdown.

The Thule Hullavator requires the bars for the vehicle to have 4"-6" of overhang to work properly. If your vehicle has the required over hang for the bars the product will work with out an issue .
will this work with a 17 foot sea kayak, noticed when its ready to lift the kayak on the wing mirror of the car might stop a longer boat? is there a way of locking it off to avoid the wing mirror? if not then its not for me
The Kayak won't be a problem but, the Hullavator needs a certain amount of space to avoid smashing against the side doors. In the past when I noticed a mirror could be in the way of loading I boat, I just folded the Mirror in and it worked like a charm. Obviously that isn't something all vehicles have, but that would be my suggestions without a little more information.

Morning Connie, We do indeed have a roof rack for a Jeep with rain gutters. www.rackattack.com/fit/jeep/wrangler-jl-unlimited-hardtop-4dr/2020/ You may have to change the year but Thule makes a 300R tower system that would need 60inch bars for a Wrangler with Rain Gutters. Those bars should be long enough to transport a Hullavator without any issues. If you have more specific questions please feel free to reach out to our awesome support team. www.rackattack.com/contact-us/ Thanks for your question!
Your vehicle would need crossbars with a t-slot in them. This is going to be something like the Thule wing-bars or the Yakima jetstream. The Hullavator requires 4"-6" of overhang in order to work properly, so you might need to go with an oversize bar. It would be best to reach out to your local store for further guidance, find your local store at the link below: www.rackattack.com/stores/
I just installed the Thule Evo wing bars on a new 2023 CRV and my next step was to do the Hullavator . I have 3.75 inch overhang ..Do you think this will be OK? Can I offset it a half inch if needed?
Hello. The standard WingBar Evo fit for the 2023 Honda CRV with flush side rails is 50 inch bar length, we'd suggest 53 inch bars to provide the best side vehicle clearance for the Hullavator install. If attempting the install with 50 inch bars, it is possible to offset the bars to the Hullavator side to help with clearance. Thanks!
Hello. The maximum width for the Hullavator Pro is 36 inches, based on our finding, the Radisson canoe is 38 inches wide and so would not be a fit. Thanks for checking.
I just had this installed on the Thule VM1PZ-7855100-C crossbar system. The mechanic said that the rubber strip in the t-channel needed to be cut or removed completely. With this strip removed, there is a loud whistling upon traveling. If I cut them can they still be used if I remove the rack system?
Usually you can cut the chunk of strip out that your accessory covers and then fill it back up after. We can also order replacement strips to allow for extra pieces if you lose a chunk.
Hello. The Hullavator needs to be mounted to a roof rack that extends beyond the roofline 4-8 inches. This spacing is necessary to allow clearance for the lift-assist assembly to lower to the side of the vehicle. Check out guide for a suitable roof rack: www.rackattack.com/wizard/ Thanks!
A great video on a way to keep kayaking as we get older. Question: it seems that the 898 Hullavator sits higher on the silver Aero bar than the square bar, is that correct? (Though probably not worth buying the "Aero" bars if fitting these chunky kayak holders on a roof).
The lift assembly detaches from the load bar brackets quickly and the brackets slide off the AeroBlade bars quickly too. The best thing to do is remove the lift assembly between uses and remove the brackets when kayaking is out of season. That leaves you with a quiet, aerodynamic AeroBlade roof rack.
As long as you have enough of an overhang on each side of the crossbar there shouldn't be an issue with having 2 Hullavators on the vehicle will not be an issue. The Hullavator require 4"-6" of bar overhang in order to work properly
I have Hullavator ?2016. It was recommended I get the Thule Evo Clamp and Wingbar Evo bars. The bars only stick out about 2 inches on each side (53" bars for a 2015 Mazda 3 Sport). I do not think this is enough room for the hullavator to be away from the vehicle - haven't tried the roof rack on the car yet. Can I move the bars closer to the side the hullavator will be on? Thank you.
Hello. Yes, you can move the bars closer to the side of the Hullavator. In the instructions for the roof rack there is a measurement used for SquareBars, that measurement can be used in place of the scale numbers which are used to center the bars. Thanks!
Thanks so much for your quick reply. Was able to attach rack as per instructions to car. Had some one on car roof holding Hullavator and it works as Rack Attack said and does not hit side of car! We do have a problem tho. We don't have the 35 mm screws and square nuts needed to attach Hullavator to bars. Do you sell them separately? Thank you.

I'm planning on buying a xl predator minn Kota, without the console I believe it weights about 97 lbs with. Nothing in it, will this rack lift be able to handle the XL predator ?
The Hullavator is rated for kayaks up to 75 pounds maximum and the kayak's weight must be balanced between the two lift assemblies. For heavier kayaks there are other options from Rhino-Rack, the Nautic Kayak Lifter can handle a kayak up to 176 pounds, here's more information: ruclips.net/video/qYXMGYs02OM/видео.html
Hello, It's always best that the two lifting struts are weighted equally. On a steep slop the weight would shift downhill slightly, ideally, it's best to load on a level surface. Thanks!
I have a 13ft ocean kayak prowler and it is fab but weighs a bit. I also have a defender which is quite hight up so was looking for something to make my life easier :)
Yes looks great but was I wondering if the Hullavator would drop low enough down the side of my Defender as they are vey high and even higher with a roof rack. The height to the top of my defender is about 2.1336 mitres Do you know what the drop down measures on the side of a vehicle? I get it up on my land rover defender but one of these would make it a lot easier. :)
Hello. The site says it's not compatible with the Thule AeroBlade EDGE which is a flush ended roof rack style, the Hullavator requires a through bar type crossbar including the standard AeroBlade or the current WingBar EVO.
It is possible to install 53 inch Thule Wingbar Eco bars on the 2020+ Corolla, to accommodate two Hullavators, however, the weight of the two Hullavators combined is 90 pounds, this leave only 75 pounds for both kayaks, 37.5 pounds each. Pongo 120 weights 49 pounds each. Additionally, the Hullavator lowers 40 inches from the roof rack height, on a Corolla, this would bring down the kayaks very low on the side of the vehicle. Thanks!
Hello. The Hullavator must be installed onto Thule SquareBar crossbars or their slotted bars, but not their short, flush ended, EDGE bar styles. Here's the manual that details this information (sec. 1-6): www.thule.com/-/s/approved/std.lang.all/35/78/483578.pdf?rev=6.2 Thanks!
Great, we offer free shipping, no sales tax outside Texas, click here for complete details: www.rackoutfitters.com/thule-898-hullavator-lift-assist-kayak-carrier-for-square-and-aeroblade-bars/
The Hullavator Pro will support Kayaks up to 3g inches wide. The Gas load assist struts will only take off 40lbs of Kayak weight so some oomf may still be required.
Hello. Yes, it will require a minimum of 53 inch load bars and each Hullavator weights 45 pounds. Most Thule roof rack systems are rated to maximum of 165 pounds (165 - 90 = 75 / 2 = 37.5 pounds maximum per kayak). Confirm the fit using our guide here: www.rackattack.com/wizard/ Thanks!
Getting ready to order some new crossbars for a Mazda 2023 CX-5 with the flush Mount rails. Looking for the Thule Aero blade. I have a set of the hullavators . Curious if I should go with a 53” or 60” for better clearance when lowering. What are your thoughts ?
Hello. Most likely the 53 inch, the 60 inch may not allow for proper fit to the vehicle as the underbar track is limited an may not allow the feet the correct inward position.
There is only the one model of the Hullavator. In looking at your boat, it appears to not be a good candidate for this product. You might try the Rhino-Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter - www.rackoutfitters.com/rhino-rack-nkl-nautic-kayak-lifter/
Hi Johanna, the Hullavator gas struts lift 40 pounds of the kayak's weight. The maximum weight of the Kayak must be 75 pound or less. The weight of the kayak should be centered between the two lift assemblies to insure that each gas strut is lifting equal weight.
The international product manual for the 898 provides instructions to mount to Thule T-Track Bars (section 3): www.rackoutfitters.com/content/kayak-load-assist-rack-thule-hullavator-898.pdf
Well it looks like I may stand corrected. I should have said, Wing Bars with the T-Track system, which I have. It's quite annoying that the Hullavator is definately a good piece of kit yet everywhere I have looked (even on the UK Thule website), the advise here has been "Don't put them on Wing Bars. Only Pro Bars and Square bars are suitable" - Bugger :o((
Sounds like you got a really sweet deal on your SUV. If you're after a load assist carrier for a kayak but want to save some money, check out the Yakima ShowDown. www.rackoutfitters.com/yakima-showdown-load-assist-kayak-or-sup-carrier-set-of-2/
@@rackattack Hi, thank you for reply. That means 91cm? I have asked thule today and they said only 80cm hull can fit. I am so confused. I am looking at a kayak that is 88cm width, so it should fit? its called PEDAL PRO FISH - 2.5M FLAP-POWERED FISHING KAYAK, would you please confirm?
@@项籍-v9t Yes, 36 inches (91.44cm) is max width for the newest model 898. However, the shape of a hull can also be a factor so we'd recommend visiting one our store to test fit the kayak on our display Hullavator, this is the only way to confirm the fit with 100 percent certainty.
Comment Google translated from German to English: "Unfortunately, the Thule Hullavator is completely unsuitable for transporting kayaks, which are equivalent to a sea kayak. I bought it to transport a P&H Leo. The rear tension cord has no contact with the boat and cannot stabilize it. Safe transport is therefore not possible. The Thule dealer has recognized the defect and will take the carrier back. The Thule company, however, does not take on this topic and continues to stick to its "defect-free" product." Hello. We're not seeing anything specify as to why the P&H Leo will not work with the Hullavator, the weight is under 70 lbs at 66 lbs, the hull is a traditional shape. If the only issue is the rear strap tension, perhaps there is a solution. A kayak pad turned upside down to fill in the space may provide the necessary tension to safety secure the rear of the kayak: www.rackattack.com/kayak-racks/sportrack-replacement-foam-18-kayak-blocks/ Just a possible suggestion as no one rack can be a 100% solution for every kayak made and yet to be made. It will depend on the bars you have already. The Hullavator generally attaches to Thule cross bars with 4-8 inches of clearance from the tower to the end of the bar. If you are not sure which bars you have or what you may need it's always best to contact a store closest to you, they will be happy to help find what you need! www.rackattack.com/stores/ Thanks for your question, #DontBeRackless
That's because it's the best of the best! Thule sets these prices, but they have earned the right as they are the leader in racks. You pay a fair amount, but you get a great product. The Hullavator has helped many kayakers over the years who have issues getting their kayaks on the roof. Many people have sworn by this as it has made it so they can continue to do what they love, instead of giving up their favorite hobby.
+James Lester And your point is? First, it's a loading system. Second, if you can't get your kayak on your truck, doesn't matter how much the kayak cost, now does it? Mine are not less than the $400-600 cost of these loaders.
+Mary Ann Miller First read what I said. "It MIGHT very well cost more than your kayaks". I didn't say all kayaks or my kayaks. Sure, it's a loading system. There are many other types systems out there for far less money. I purchased a bed extender for my pick up. Cost $78. I can load 2 kayaks safely in 5 minutes. In my opinion, Thule products are way overpriced. Look for other alternatives.
I am under 5 feet tall and drive a Chevy Tahoe. I have to climb on top of my truck to load my boats. Disabilities are making that hard. What alternatives are out there? I have J cradles. When I first looked at this system it was over $1000.
You could always look at the Malone Telos system. J bars and lift is about $400. Another is a Reese Towpower for about $60. although I'm not sure if that would work for you.
I am 63 yrs. old and about 5'2". I love to kayak so I splurged and bought this system 3 yrs. ago so that I could get my kayak on the roof of my VW Tiquan. It is expensive but it works well and lets me get out on the water more.

Hi Paul, I have a 2005 Lexus rx330 with factory roof rack. What crossbars and mounts do I need to mount the hullavator?
Thanks!
@@rackattack thank you I installed a 53 inch and it was perfect
i have an oldtown sportsman 120pdl, its 90lbs with out the seat and pedal drive, would it be too heavy for this?
Hello. The maximum weight capacity for the Hullavator Pro is 75 pounds. Over this weight the gas struts become ineffective.
Hey! I have a 12’ Raddison canoe that weighs next to nothing. Maybe 35 pounds if that. Would it be possible to use this rack for it?
Hello. The maximum width for the Hullavator Pro is 36 inches, based on our finding, the Radisson canoe is 38 inches wide and so would not be a fit. Thanks for checking.
@@rackattack are you talking the max middle width is 36 inches?
@@rackattack I measured 37-1/2 is there any way I could get it to squeeze in?
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Will it work on factory installed roof racks??? I have a Sienna van.
Did I read wrong that it can only lift 40 lbs max? or 40 per? Not many lightweight adult kayaks 40lbs or less
Hello. The Hullavator is rated for kayaks up to 75 pounds the gas struts will lower the lifting weight by 40 pounds. Thanks!
Ok, cool, thanks very much for the promote reply.
how many feet apart does both bars need to be from each other to hold a 13 feet kayak ?
We have a Volvo XC90 (tall SUV) with crossbars. Can we fit 2 Hullavators to accommodate 2 kayaks?
Thank you.
@@AM-xx1wy Hello. Glad the fit worked. The fasteners are not available on our website, however, they may be available at one of our stores, check our store listing for a location near you: www.rackattack.com/stores/
How can I get this for a hoby 14 it weight at 125 pounds and I don't know what is the best leader assist rack
Curious whether issues arise if the vehicle is on an incline such as a boat ramp.
Hello, It's always best that the two lifting struts are weighted equally. On a steep slop the weight would shift downhill slightly, ideally, it's best to load on a level surface. Thanks!
Brilliant
Yes, a useful, innovative design. Thanks!
I have a 13ft ocean kayak prowler and it is fab but weighs a bit. I also have a defender which is quite hight up so was looking for something to make my life easier :)
This Thule Hullavator is approved for boats up to 75 pounds and lifts up to 40 pounds of the weight! A very helpful system
It will reduce the lift height from the rack by 40 inches.
It says in your website it isn't compatible with aero blade bar
Hello. The site says it's not compatible with the Thule AeroBlade EDGE which is a flush ended roof rack style, the Hullavator requires a through bar type crossbar including the standard AeroBlade or the current WingBar EVO.
Can you carry 2 kyacks on your small car(Toyota Corolla) pongo kyacks
It is possible to install 53 inch Thule Wingbar Eco bars on the 2020+ Corolla, to accommodate two Hullavators, however, the weight of the two Hullavators combined is 90 pounds, this leave only 75 pounds for both kayaks, 37.5 pounds each. Pongo 120 weights 49 pounds each. Additionally, the Hullavator lowers 40 inches from the roof rack height, on a Corolla, this would bring down the kayaks very low on the side of the vehicle. Thanks!
Best roof rack to buy for this? Money isn't an issue
Hello. This first depends on the vehicle, use our guide and select the Thule roof rack if offered: www.rackattack.com/wizard/
excellent video I want to get this setup.
what is the maximum weight you can carry with this rack
Hello. The maximum weight is 75 pounds, evenly distributed so that each gas strut is lifting an equal weight. Thanks!
Will the kayak carrier fit on any roof rails?
Hello. The Hullavator must be installed onto Thule SquareBar crossbars or their slotted bars, but not their short, flush ended, EDGE bar styles. Here's the manual that details this information (sec. 1-6):
www.thule.com/-/s/approved/std.lang.all/35/78/483578.pdf?rev=6.2 Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this product. We are looking for an easier way to load our yaks onto a tall SUV. :-)

the real question will it hold a hobie 360 kayak
at 135lbs
The Hullavator Pro will support Kayaks up to 3g inches wide. The Gas load assist struts will only take off 40lbs of Kayak weight so some oomf may still be required.
Can you buy 2 of these systems so you can put 2 kayaks on a car?
@@rackattack if I have 2 kayaks at 45lbs each, can you recommend Thule equipment that could support them and the hullavator?
@@peterd314 This recommendation must always start with the vehicle, use our guide to see what racks will work best for you: www.rackattack.com/wizard/
Does it come with only one ?
Hello. The Hullavator includes two lift units in order to lift and transport one kayak. Thanks!
is there a model that will lift the Pro-Angler 12 or 14?
There is only the one model of the Hullavator. In looking at your boat, it appears to not be a good candidate for this product. You might try the Rhino-Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter - www.rackoutfitters.com/rhino-rack-nkl-nautic-kayak-lifter/
Hi. I am having issues pushing the kayak up when strapped to the two holding arms. Cannot figure out how to make it easy.
Hi Johanna, the Hullavator gas struts lift 40 pounds of the kayak's weight. The maximum weight of the Kayak must be 75 pound or less. The weight of the kayak should be centered between the two lift assemblies to insure that each gas strut is lifting equal weight.
Apparently Thule advise us here in the UK that the Hullavator should not be used on Aero bars. . . .
Only Pro Bars and Square bars are suitable" - Bugger :o((
Brilliant! Just a quick English lesson. The words are width, length, height. There is no such word as heightth or heighth.
The total I spent for my 4x4 SUV was way cheaper than this setup. A decent kayak setup would cost more than my SUV.
Sounds like you got a really sweet deal on your SUV. If you're after a load assist carrier for a kayak but want to save some money, check out the Yakima ShowDown. www.rackoutfitters.com/yakima-showdown-load-assist-kayak-or-sup-carrier-set-of-2/
What’s the max width to hold a kayak?
Hello. Up to 36 inch wide hulls will fit the Hullavator Pro. Thanks!

The price its Just ridiculus thule abusé seriously
That's because it's the best of the best! Thule sets these prices, but they have earned the right as they are the leader in racks. You pay a fair amount, but you get a great product. The Hullavator has helped many kayakers over the years who have issues getting their kayaks on the roof. Many people have sworn by this as it has made it so they can continue to do what they love, instead of giving up their favorite hobby.
@@rackattack I prefer to buy a kayak trailer at this price
You can do the same thing with a $5.00 mat with a rubber bottom via the back of the trunk.... Just RUclips it....
The cost of this system might very cost more than your kayaks.
The saddles will dent heavier kayaks...do not buy!@!!
Hello. The Hullavator is rated for kayaks up to 75 pounds and when the kayak is loaded evenly on the cradles and straps are not overtightened the kayak should not deform....sorry to hear of this user's experience.
