*This unit works like a charm. Keeps my rv 21 x 41 very **Fastly.Cool** . I recommend to anyone that wants to keep a rv cold without having to turn on the main a/c.*
Great idea on the window vent! Reminds me of my trucking days when they had the stalls to park in [at the truck stops] to utilize full hookup amenities, including Netflix, local and cable tv, to leave your truck engine turned off! Great video, Troy, and thanks for sharing!
THIS is exactly how I'm going to use and operate my aircon. Typically we only need AC for about four days a year when it gets stupid hot and super humid.
I got one of those portable ac units..vented it out the side of the van.condensate going down through floor.. it's supposed to be 8000 btu.but it really don't cool to well.
Thanks, you were a great help. We are working toward a simple build, too. We live in Central Florida and an A/C is top of our list! But, did not want to cut the van. Is the 5500 btu large enough for a full blown Florida 95 degree summer day? Also, what do you do with the water that drains from the unit? Thanks for your video. Tomm in Lakeland
that's a cool idea (pun intended) I like the exhaust window design. I used to live in Jacksonville years ago, I remember the temps. Now stationed in NJ.
They work well but are power hungry units which would be difficult to power from a 12 vdc system and inverter alone. A large battery bank for a 1/2 the night is likely needed.
I'm thinking bout running one off a 3000 watt inverter on my semi...I believe the semi has at least 6 batteries...I wonder how fast it'll run batteries down
That's a really nice idea thanks for sharing this with us. What source of power are you using for the ac unit I am planning doing the same thing on my van thanks..
Thank you so much for this video. Is there any condensation that we should worry about? If so, then how did you deal with it? We bought a rooftop AC but have decided not to use it after seeing your video.
Curious, does the exhaust hose transfer heat to the inside? I had purchased one of these last year for my 5th Wheel. The exhaust heat was unbearable! Returned it!
Thanks for this very practical and common sense video. I'm also planning to get a Promaster 2500 without rooftop AC (a Winnebago Solis), and wanted to ask a couple questions. 1. Just curious about the water drip for condensation accumulation - is that something you have to attach a drip line? 2. Also wondering where you got the plastic exhaust attachment for the wooden piece in the window? Thanks again!
The unit does not drip. I don’t know how it does but it works. I don’t use a drip line. The unit came with an adapter for the window of a house I took the oval piece out of the adapter it just snaps in or out of the window adapter. I made the wood piece for the window in the van.
Check out my other videos and please subscribe if you haven’t already. We have a simple build and love our van. We are heading out for some social distancing next week. I will post some new videos soon.
Thanks for such an informative and well done video! And you did such a nice job of the window adapter - maybe a little rubber gasketing on the bottom edge to help seal? QUESTION: Do you need any ventilation to bring in outside air to replace the air being exhausted by the AC itself?
Yes I am going to add a gasket but even without the gasket it works pretty good. There are two factory vents behind the wheel well that let in plenty of air. Also if you have a roof vent you can crack it a little. Thanks for you commenting and watching my video please check out some of my other videos.
Thanks Stan the Van. I forgot about those vents - I'm glad you mentioned them and I'll make sure they're not blocked. And I do have a Maxxair Fan, so manually opening that just a bit is a great idea of yours. I just went to Lowes and bought a HiSense AC. I got the next size up (10,000 BTU) since my Promaster is in the early stages of being insulated. I did a quick test run in the parking lot and it seems to work fine running off my 2K inverter with 250 Amp Hours worth of batteries, but I plan to run exclusively from shore power. Thanks again for such a helpful video!
I use a piece of cardboard to make a template then just traced the design on the plywood and cut it with a jig saw. Then I used the air duct piece to trace the home needed to attach the air duct. Pretty simple. Sorry I don’t have a video of me making the adaptor.
Pretty nice job, but probably won't work for me. Tried it in a trailer bedroom but the noise of the air over the ridges in the accordion hose was a bit much for me. Go figure; spent a month by a buddy in Jamaica, Queens NY, sleeping in his living room maybe 15-20 feet from passing elevated subway trains. 🙄
Thanks for sharing!!! I have a good bit of experience with campers but am now looking for a solution while working on the road. I'm going to convert a minivan. Comfort is key. Stealth is also important for tricky situations. Do you (or anyone else) know of reason that I shouldn't find a good spot to run the exhaust through the floor - assuming I can find a good place on the undercarriage. I've been all over the internet. Everything goes out the windows or out the side/back. ...all kinds of solutions. Why not just through the floor?
Envisia did you try this? Did it work? We tried a couple different options with window units and stand-alone units but we always tried to go through a lower exhaust hole and it never worked. I think the exhaust has to be higher than the intake... not sure. Let us know what you found! Planning on trying a stand-alone AC unit and a 2k watt inverter/generator this weekend.
We just installed ours into the van, temporarily. Ours seems to be short cycling. 10 mins no compressor 3 mins compressor blowing cold air. Does yours do this?
Same for me, and it is pulling 1700watt when (I believe) it is supposed to not pull more than 950, it might be damaged, I'm taking mine back to Lowe's and getting a new one
Ok I set it up just like you have and it is working pretty good now. Not short cycling. I was trying to reduce it down to 3inch instead of 5 inch and go down through the air holes behind the wheel hub into the bumper. If anyone is thinking of doing this... Maybe I can save you time and money... It doesn't work. I was trying to find a way to permanently/semi-permently install it without drilling new holes. I even added a vent fan with a faster speed than the AC so in theory, I could reduce the reverse turbulence of ducting down... this failed too. All in good testing and fun, but all said and done we just are venting it through the driver's window now. Best of luck!
It will run off my 2000 watt inverter but I need more than the 200 amp hour battery setup to run it through the night. Still working on adding batteries.
So you don't have any problems keeping it cook when it's really hot outside? Is the 5500 btu enough or would you go with a more powerful AC if you could do it again? I have a 6000 btu one that I want to run on a 2000watt inverted generator (about as much power the generator can power). So your happy with 5500 BTUs for cooling the van??

Thank you
I found you while looking for a air conditioner for my new to me van!
Thank you for sharing! ~Tracey~👍
It works out for you thank you for watching the video.
I did the same in my van. I used a larger dryer vent for the outside hole. Works well for the few times I need it.
Thanks the feedback.

So far no problem with condensations the AC has a small tank and have only ever had to empty it once.
where can I buy that base that goes on the window to put the tube
Do you notice problmes with negative pressure, i.e., hot air being pulled in?
No problems. The van has those air valves behind the wheel wells. I made sure the were not covered when I put in the walls

@@TroyDStanley good point. It seems the smaller you can go, the easier it is to travel.
One last thing, where do you store your gas powered generator?
In the basement under the bed. It is the size of a small suitcase. The brand is Champion 2200. It is very quite and will run all day on 1gal of gas.
