    A passing comment that your eloquence, paired with your structuring of the excellent material you present, make for exceptional content. While it appears to currently fall algorithmically into the broad "martial arts" category, you weave in profound depth of thought I don't tend to see elsewhere. Thank you.

    Thank you for your thoughts. I had expected more of an analyses with more attention to the original sources, though you did refer to them. But that might also be because I think your videos have quite a fast pace. I prefer them a bit slower ;).
    I do agree a lot with the content of what you said and I would like to end with a quote that you probably know: "The society that separates its warriors from its scholars has its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards".

    I agree that one of the biggest problems in western society today is people's lack of moral ethics: unfortunately the more excessive pleasures are in a society, the weaker it makes society and people, and harder for people to abstain from vice.
    A lot of fighters in the UFC lack discipline and can't even control their own lives, they have no business being in the Octagon.
    That's why I typically have much more respect for non-western fighters the most, like Khabib Normagomedov because he comes from a more rigid and disciplined way of life, and that shows in his fighting. Glad he taught McGregor that Irish foul mouth a lesson.

      I mean the most undisciplined ufc fighter is more disciplined than 99% of people to be fair.

    Theseus and Cadmus are two of my favorite figures from Greek mythology, hope to see a video from you on Cadmus in the future. Pelopidas has become a physical role model for me, as he was known for his athleticism.
    I wasn't area that Theseus played a role in founding Pankration nor Plato being a wrestling.
    Excellent presentation on the subject.

    If I'm like modern kids I would take offense by you showing Shaolin at the same time mentioning useless martial arts, but I know my style is useful. But I also know there's plenty of people that don't know how to use it and lie and bring shame over us traditional Wushu practitioners.
    Thanks for the good video and your channel is very interesting and your narration is good.
    Thanks

    • @AMOPankration

      I'm arguing the opposite, that these traditional martial arts are not useless, even if they aren't as effective in combat sports competitions they still have intrinsic value. Thanks for the kind words.

    • @B..B.
      @B..B. Год назад +2

      @@AMOPankration I see that in the full video. But the first moment caught my guard low hehe, and I remembered that people nowadays take offense without listening the full of it. But is not a lie that there's plenty of people bringing a bad image to traditional styles by not understanding them and not teaching it right. Your work until not by what I've seen is amazing and I'm in a similar path to find the most effective form of my art.
      Mad respect to you and hope for your success.

    When you put examples of martial arts constructed as cults, you put some video clips of George Dillman. I find interesting that this guy, before becomming some kind of no touch KO guru, was a genuine martial artist. He was a genuine karate master who, while not being the best fighter in the world, won some competitions... then, in stead of raising another generation of fighters, he became older and fatter, and I think he still wanted to be the center of adulation be beiing the best and that is in my opinion why a genuine practitionner became a fake martial artist surrounding himself by his clique of cultists.
    By the way, was there in ancient Greece a connection between martial arts and dancing ? In ethnographical studies, it's common to see dance as a medium to commemorate a hero, or to have some kind of blend of theatrics and dance to commemorate a battle. Also, in the middle age, knights where required to know good manners, be eleguant and to know how to dance (also those kind of dances showed the appartenance of one as a member of the elite by knowing dances that are not in the repertoire of the common folk). Do you know of, if there was, a connection between dance and martial arts in the classical or hellenistic periods ?

    • @AMOPankration
      @AMOPankration  2 года назад +3

      Indeed there is a connection, and it is stated in the passage of Plato's Laws that I display in the video. Book 7 page 795-796. Link in the description.

    I love what you do man, this is absolutely remarkable!
    Could you do a video on the panhellenic games, and especially the Olympics one day? I reckon there's a few historical documents and videos on the subject that aren't always accurate and I guess they even share false ideas sometimes.
    I think the subject is truly fascinating though!

    So why should scholars learn to fight? I'm interested in your answer. I myself am majoring in physics and astrophysics at college so I consider myself a scholar. I've also recently started doing fencing thanks to a friend that got me into it (we actually started with Kendo). I really like the spiritual connections Kendo has with the martial art combat.
