  • Not everyone plays by the rules when it comes to public transport. So what happens when criminals are caught trying to avoid paying the same fares as everyone else?
For the first time in its history, London Underground has opened its doors to record the day-to-day life of its 16,500 staff who work across a network of 275 stations and 507 trains running on over 300 miles of track. Every year more than one billion people use The Tube that's 3 million journeys a day; commuters, holiday-makers, day-trippers, businessmen and women, students, overseas visitors.
This series goes behind the scenes to tell the story of some of the dedicated and colourful characters who work for LU, doing a difficult job under often challenging and stressful circumstances.

@@MegaArrighi I didn't measure whether it's a large or tiny chance that someone would be hit by a train, due to a duty to safeguard her, but even this "tiny" chance is too much. If she was only putting herself into danger and no one was assigned the duty of keeping her away from danger, I'd not care, as it's her own life. But, this is a society where one person's actions negatively affect the lives of others. If we want to be a society of order, we all have an obligation to cooperate. Those who have disorders that cause them to put themselves and or others into danger, or even generally be uncooperative, probably should be locked away where they won't have to worry about what they can't help, due to some kind of compulsion, instead of out here with those of us who get on well. In the evening i brought down from Golcar some rowdy young lads to town for their night out when we did the last bus to Golcar one of the lads paid just to Thornton lodge about a quarter way to Golcar. So i went upstairs to get rest of the money he owed which he stood up and dropped his pants and undies and said take thirty pence out of that. So i said to him i could not get half a pence out of it as there is nothing to look at. Everybody upstairs laughed at him i made him feel one inch tall. He paid the remainder of the fare and pulled his undies and trousers up. When everybody was getting of the bus they give me high fives. And said that was brilliant. I put him in his place.

If they think fare evasion is at 46 million quid....that 's the number they will use....no doubt it's well beyond that number, and very difficult to control. Worked in transit in Canada, fro 20 years same thing...the number given v the reality. Moving people, safely and on time is an amazing achievement. Transit workers take a lot of abuse, yet they will help anyone if the need arises...special breed indeed.

In Prague, Czech Republic, you have to pay only half of your fare evasion penalty (400 rather than 800 CZK) if you buy a 1 year coupon (for 3650 CZK = 10 CZK/day) with it, which is a really good approach London should try.
What Prague should try is imprisonemet for regular fare evadors, some people need to learn the hard way...

It's the same in most places; if you look for intrigue, you will surely find it . . .public transport is no different; violence and criminals wielding knives or even firearms will materialise, if you are not vigilant.
I encountered a couple of fare dodging police on a London Bus of all modes; and who demanded to know if I had a 'Freedom Pass', which I had used to board the bus.
They weren't showing any authorizing badges, so I wasn't showing mine.
That seemed to offend them, until they got a real dodger, which distracted them and they forgot about me.
I also happened to have a driving licence, senior citizen's card and as passport as 'photo I.D.' which was easily seen when extracting my 'Freedom Pass' from my wallet.
But, I may have looked 'a bit suspect' to them, despite my grey hair and advanced years. . .
It is however, the only 'run-in' I've ever had with fare evasion inspectors, even when I was not a pensioner.

Although a lot of that is because the drivers need to not leave people behind (kids/teenagers especially) in case they have no other way to get home.
That and the drivers dont want to be in a position where the passenger in question gets violent.
